The Monthly Newsletter

Hi everyone,

As we close out another year, we're grateful for all your participation and support! Join us this month to take part in Japanese year-end traditions like mochitsuki, or just to say hello and hang out at our holiday party.

Today is #GivingTuesday, and we hope you'll consider supporting one of Japantown's many nonprofits, such as Kimochi or Nichi Bei. These valuable organizations depend on donations in order to serve and connect the community we love.

We look forward to seeing you in 2022!

Mochitsuki Workshops

Join Nakayoshi in volunteering at the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California (the Center)’s annual Mochitsuki Workshops!

Mochitsuki is a Japanese New Year's tradition of pounding cooked rice into mochi. The Center is running workshops where attendees learn how mochi is made under the direction of retired owner of the former Yamada Seika manju and mochi shop, Mr. George Yamada, and take home some freshly pounded mochi.

The Center needs volunteers to assist in the kitchen helping prepare the steamed rice as well as help shape the mochi after it is pounded.

If you're interested in volunteering, please take note of the following:
  • Proof of full vaccination is required in order to volunteer.
  • Masks are mandatory while indoors.
  • All workshop attendees will also be required to follow the same safety protocols.
  • Come dressed in comfortable clothing that you don't mind getting a little messy.
Sign up for a morning (9:30 AM - 2:45 PM) or afternoon (2:15 PM - 6:45 PM) shift, and be sure to list "Nakayoshi" under Organization so we know you're coming!

JETAANC Bounenkai Year-End Virtual Event

Join JETAANC for their year-end virtual event! Instead of meeting in person, we will separately grab bentos at your local Japanese restaurant of choice and meet safely and virtually from the comfort of our homes while we hear from Professor Michael Dylan Foster. Following that, we will have a nijikai where we will play a game, have a chance to win a prize, and just have more time to chat and share JET stories! For more info and to RSVP, go to Eventbrite.

For events from the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California (JCCCNC), see their calendar.
