Good morning,

We have hot water heating! This week marks a major milestone for the Sustainable Infrastructure Project as 13 buildings that have been converted from steam heating to hot water heating now have hot water service.

We celebrate this achievement with the entire Oberlin community. Thanks to everyone on campus that took special precautions navigating construction and endured the inconveniences of this big work. You have helped to advance our campus toward our goal of carbon neutrality.

This year 13 buildings were upgraded and 25,000 linear feet of new heating and cooling pipe was installed. Buildings that are fully converted to the new system are expected to be 30 percent more efficient. Additionally, these buildings will have local controls for greater occupancy comfort, expanded fiber networks, expanded fire protection capabilities, and upgraded mechanical and electrical systems.

Over the next three years, we will expand the new heating and cooling system throughout campus. You can learn more about the project on the project website. We will be continuing to wrap up minor construction closeout activities through November. Wayfinding and parking maps will be updated as needed in the coming months.

This milestone allows us to take a break from the intense construction throughout south campus until we begin phase two next summer at which time weekly emails will resume.
