Oberlin College and Conservatory continues our march toward carbon neutrality as we near completion of work in the Wilder Bowl and move activity to South Campus, where our team is preparing to accelerate work in the South Campus. Included in this work will be the closure of some City of Oberlin streets, the first of which is expected to occur at the end of next week. Scheduled to begin on Friday, July 23rd, West College Street will be closed just west of the intersection with North Professor Street to enable installation of the hot water and chilled water pipes to South Campus. This closure is expected to last between five to seven days.

In early August, North Professor Street will be closed between West College Street and Elm Street, enabling the installation of hot water and chilled water pipes to serve the Conservatory Central, Robertson, First United Methodist Church, and Conservatory Bibbins. This closure is also expected to last between five to seven days. Traffic and pedestrian detour signage will be posted in the area to help with wayfinding.

Hardscape and landscape restoration will also continue in the Wilder Bowl. Trenches that have completed pipe installation are being filled in and will be restored to previous condition. Sidewalks and other hard surface features are getting restored as trenches are filled, with final seeding and tree plantings occurring in the fall when conditions are better for growth. While construction continues on South Campus, we are also progressing our design and planning for next year’s work. Over the next few weeks, our construction team will be conducting field investigation of underground utilities on North Campus. This investigation, otherwise known as “potholing” involves isolated digging of small holes to locate exact depth and location of other underground utilities. Once utilities are identified and recorded, the holes are filled and ground is restored. This work is expected to last for a few weeks.

As always, please be aware that heavy equipment is active and on campus throughout the day. Safety is our highest priority, and we ask for your help to ensure everyone is paying attention and alert while walking through campus. In addition, we want to remind people to allow some extra time to navigate the impacted areas of campus, particularly those buildings in and around Wilder Bowl.

To assist with navigating activity, the team updates the wayfinding map each Friday, by 5:00 PM. The link for this map can be found on the SIP Activity Updates page.

Week of July 18th
Road Closures
  • West College Street will be closed just west of the intersection with North Professor Street. This work is scheduled to begin on Friday, July 23rd and expected to last between five to seven days.
Signage and Fencing
  • Pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicle wayfinding signage installation and modification will continue to support the work as it progresses.
Site Prep and Staging
  • Project materials will continue arriving on campus (pipe, materials, etc.) and will be installed in their final location or stored in the designated staging areas.
Abatement
  • Some minor abatement work is planned in several of the South campus buildings.
Building Conversions and Improvements
  • Building modernization activities are continuing in South Hall, Baldwin, Harvey Kade Price, Conservatory Warner Central, Robertson, Bibbins, and Conservatory Library. Work has also started in First United Methodist Church, Lewis House, Lewis Center, Lord-Saunders, Allencroft, Harkness Hall, and Fairchild House.
Distribution Pipe Installation and Plant Conversion
  • We will continue to install pipe in the Wilder Bowl and restore the Bowl to its previous condition. Work in and around the Rice-King parking lot will continue. At the end of this week, we will also be installing pipe across College Street. This street closure is expected to start July 23rd and proceed for approximately five to seven days.
    • In preparation for this work, the construction team will begin prefabricating pipe and trench boxes on the south side of College Street, just east of Harkness House.
  • Work continues in the Central Services Building to prepare for the new carbon-free heating and cooling system.
Week of July 25th

Parking (View Parking Map)
To accommodate staging and contractor parking for SIP and for Mudd renovation, changes to and alternative accommodations for faculty and staff are expected for the following lots:
  • The Service Building East lot is unavailable until October 1.
  • Contractors will utilize marked parking spots in the Gray Gables parking lot through the duration of the project. There will be approximately 25 parking spaces available for staff and they will be marked accordingly.
  • To minimize construction traffic and support efficient construction activities, the Rice/King lot closure will be extended until mid-August. The designated handicapped parking spots will be temporarily relocated to the Finney/Cox lot and displaced faculty and staff can find alternative parking spots in the Mudd parking lot. A path from the Mudd lot to Rice and King will be maintained during this work.
As a reminder, Campus Safety has relaxed parking sticker lot designations for the summer in support of the SIP.

Also, please note all impacted faculty and staff are not limited to the designated alternative accommodations outlined here should another lot on campus better suit their schedule and campus pathway. 

Lastly, temporary bike racks have been installed at the eastern entrance of Mudd Library to replace the bike racks that have been temporarily removed from the north east corner of the building.

Other Work on Campus
Beyond the Sustainable Infrastructure Program, some other work activities on campus will have an impact on pedestrian and bike traffic. The CELA project, also known as Mudd Engaged Liberal Arts, continues. This project involves a renovation of Mudd center basement into new office space and concrete repair in the lower courtyard on the eastern exterior of the building, including the installation of an ADA ramp for the lower courtyard. Concrete is currently being removed from the plaza, and this concrete work will continue through the end of July. In support of this work, the sidewalk heading in the southwest direction from Mudd Library will be designated for equipment through the end of July, and wayfinding signs will identify pathways for pedestrians and bikers to follow.
