ICEC Spring / Summer 2021 Newsletter

There’s still time to stroll down Third Street in downtown Geneva to see our latest projects . . . (now through mid-June).

The Geneva Chamber of Commerce window storyboards (May through mid-June)
Located at 8 S Third Street, The Geneva Chamber of Commerce is featuring window posters highlighting ICEC and what we do, as well as Geneva’s partner city, Croissy-sur-Seine.  Learn more about us!
1893 Plate exhibit at the Geneva History Museum (May thru mid-June)

“I left to Chicago on boat . . .”

ICEC thanks the Geneva History Museum, just across and down the street, for displaying the lovely French plate collection from the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition held in Chicago. The Expo was in celebration of the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival to the New World in 1492. The plates were sold in a pavilion gift shop at the Fair and later purchased at an auction in France. They were a gift to the museum by a 2008 visiting French delegation of Geneva’s partner city, Croissy-sur-Seine, France.

The plates tell the story of the amusing misadventures of a French tourist travelling to Chicago.   The exhibit will be displayed in the museum window through mid-June.

Les Chaises de l’Amitié/Friendship Chairs contest

Last fall, with the blessing of Graham’s Chocolates and the indispensable support of GHS Art Teacher, Megan Kelly, ICEC held an Adirondack chair painting design contest for Geneva High School’s National Art Honor Society (NAHS) students.   We entitled the contest:   Les Chaises de l’Amitié / Friendship Chairs.  There were two themes for two chairs.   One to depict ICEC’s mission and one to depict Geneva’s partner city in France, Croissy-sur-Seine.

ICEC theme:
The double chair winning design is a combination of two submissions.
Lydia Kelly (a junior) – the world
Molly Carlson (a senior) - the hands
This represents international friendship, hands outstretched in friendship
reaching out around the globe.

Croissy theme:
The single chair design winner was Maddelena Baggio (a junior)
Her design is of the 13 century Chapel of St. Léonard in Croissy.

During the Winter, the students worked on their projects at home (pandemic style!)  The completed chairs were transported to Graham’s for the unveiling on May 5 and a photo op.   In attendance were members of the ICEC Board, joined by Bonnie Pechous, Gen. Mgr. Graham’s, GHS Art Teacher, Megan Kelly, and students, Maddelena Baggio and Lydia Kelly.
and Now for Something new . . . WEBINARS!
Naturally, the pandemic changed everything this past year and a half.  So with no delegations to/from Croissy or in-person events, we got creative with virtual events!

Our very first webinar* was a presentation by our friends in Croissy, who shared the history and celebrations surrounding the French Bastille Day, July 14.

Later in December, Geneva’s very own Larry Johnson gave us a tour* of his sculpture gallery.  Next, in April, Croissy invited ICEC members to “Arts et Chiffon” highlighting the recreation of authentic clothing and wooden leisure boats used on the Seine River during the Impressionist period.

If you missed these presentations*, find the link at icecgeneva.org and enjoy!

The next webinar is in the works.  Stay tuned!
