IRS Phone Scams Persist

Phone scams are atop the IRS list of "Dirty Dozen" tax scams this year because it has been a persistent and pervasive problem for taxpayers for many months. Individuals continue to receive phone calls from criminals purporting to be IRS representatives, and Urish Popeck has first hand awareness of multiple instances of attempted scams occurring in the past several months.

Because of this, the IRS recently issued an additional alert reinforcing its prior warnings in 2014. Know that the IRS will never call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill. If you receive such a call hang up and then report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) at 800-366-4484 or through the US Treasury website.
