Happy National Bike Month, Georgia!

Beautiful weather, great places to ride, and dedicated advocates statewide working to make Georgia a bike friendly state - there's nowhere we'd rather be to celebrate National Bike Month.

Speaking of, there's so many ways to celebrate! Check with your local advocacy organization to find out about National Bike to Work Week/Day activities near you, and be sure you join the third annual National Bike Challenge. We're hoping to see 750 Georgians participate in the Challenge this year, to have fun, to motivate each other to ride more often, and to show the nation that Georgia Bikes! :)

Read on to see what's been happening to improve and promote bicycling in Georgia. Enjoy this peerless southern springtime, and have a great ride!
We are a nonprofit organization promoting bicycling and improving bicycling conditions in Georgia.

Bike friendly car parking?

You're riding through the downtown business district when out from behind an oversize truck a diagonally parked car blindly reverses right into your path. We've all had these narrow misses and have quietly cursed the person who invented head-first diagonal parking. Luckily, there's a simple fix that preserves parking spaces, protects children from traffic, and makes downtown streets safer for people on bikes.

Got tags?

Georgia's "Share the Road" specialty car tags directly support statewide bicycle advocacy. Indeed, most of Georgia Bikes' operating budget comes from tag revenue. If you like what we're about and what we do, please choose a "Share the Road" tag when you renew or purchase new car tags. Not into specialty tags? No problem! You can send a direct, tax-deductible contribution here.
Thanks for your support!
As usual, Atlanta Streets Alive was a huge success, drawing tens of thousands of people into the streets of West End Atlanta to dance, walk, run, bike, and play in the streets. Watch this incredible aerial footage of the event.
The next ASA is May 18th, 2-6 pm on Peachtree St!

Bring on the Challenge!

It's FUN. It's FREE. It starts May 1st (but you can join any time thru Sep).
It's the National Bike Challenge!
Join or start a team, log your rides (all rides are welcome: roadie, MTB, commuter, casual), engage in some friendly competition, and maybe just win some pretty sweet prizes.

Everything you need to know about biking & walking in the US

Our friends at the Alliance for Biking & Walking have just released their second Benchmarking Report, a massive study of walking and bicycling in all 50 states, 52 of the most populous cities, and 17 midsized cities.
The good news: Thanks to policies like Complete Streets, Georgia is taking important steps to improve bicycling and walking conditions.
The bad news: GA ranks at the bottom for the number of people who get recommended minimum physical activity...and we're almost dead last for the percentage of our citizens who walk or bike to work.
Help us work with state officials to implement safe, Complete Streets sooner than later. We've got a long way to go.

Trails lead to a prosperous GA

April 11-12, 150 trails advocates and builders from across GA gathered in Athens for the first statewide trails conference in fifteen years. We proudly served on the planning committee for this immensely successful and valuable event.
Check out our Trail Summit recap on the blog.

GA Bikes goes to TX

In late March, our Exec Director Brent traveled to Fort Worth for the Texas Trails & Active Transportation conference, where he presented on our work to educate planners, engineers, and law enforcement for improved bicycle safety and access in GA. After the conference, he joined his colleagues from other southern statewide advocacy groups to share and learn best practices for increasing bike friendly conditions in the South. Check out his dispatch from Texas here.
