Joyful Living Services' Newsletter

September 2013
Happy Fall
Dear Customers, Clients, and Colleagues,

Our newsletter goes all over the world thanks to the power of the internet.  People who have never had the priviledge of studying health are now able to contact us about courses in health and nutrition and iridology.  It's such a pleasure to work with each and every one of you.

Fall is in the air.  Here in California we have gone from temperatures of 106 to the high 70's in just a few months.  From wearing shorts and swimsuits to wearing long pants and sweatshirts.  We are at 2,100 feet above sea level here up in the foothills of California.  It's beautiful here and we have some extreme temperatures in the winter and in the summer.  We normally experience snow in the winter and get a chance to make snowmen for a few days before the snow melts away.  We are only an hour and a half away from Lake Tahoe and three hours away from the ocean.  To me this is the perfect place to live up in the pines and oaks and still able to grow a very healthy garden and fruit orchard.

This is the view off our back deck.  It makes a perfect environment for bears, racoons, foxes, and coyotes.  For those of you who have been following our story about the 300 pound bear that attacked our chickens last month, now you know where he came from.  If you want to learn more from us than what you receive in this monthly newsletter please connect with us on facebook.  We share a lot of various types of health related ideas on facebook that we don't have room to share in this newsletter.

Now that the kids are back in school we can focus on creating new courses and increasing our knowledge.  We hope you will choose to study health and nutrition and iridology with us through the rest of 2013 and into 2014.

We are happy to let you know that you can reach us via e-mail at iridology@netzero.net, by phone at 530-878-1119 or 800-704-9800, and on facebook, linkedin, and twitter,.  If you are not connected to us through facebook, linkedin, or twitter, please connect because we share a lot of information on those sites that we cannot possibly share in our monthly newsletters.

Understanding the Importance of Renewable Energy

Green energy is energy that is produced so that it has less of an impact on the environment than traditional energy sources, such as the energy produced by the burning of fossil fuels. Creating energy by burning fossil fuels often has negative unwanted side effects, such as millions of tons of air pollutants spewed into the atmosphere by electric plants. Types of energies that people are generally referring to when using the term “Green Energy” are describing energy produced by wind, solar, hydro and geothermal processes.

Green energy is basically derived from renewable energy sources which produce much less of a pollution impact on our environment both in obtaining the energy source, and in using the energy source. The long term benefit to the environment has to be taken into consideration when considering why renewable energy is so important. Renewable energy sources will help to reduce the dependency on non-renewable supplies, such as fossil fuels, and this will help produce sustainable energy options for generations to come.

I am doing my part to replace my negative impact on the environment  with a clean alternative, grow clean energy production, create new jobs here at home in the United States, and develop greater American energy independence. In doing so it is also providing me with additional income.  I am looking for people who would be interested in additional income and want to help preserve the environment for future generations. Fall Wellness 2013

Last night I noticed I was tempted to add a blanket to my bed; despite the fact the thermostat still read 72 degrees as it did all summer. I also noticed that the air was crisp and cooler the past few days when I let my dog Wiley out in the morning. When watering my plants, I noticed their leaves were just starting to dry up and change color. The seasons are once again changing and the shift is evident everywhere.

Our bodies are also changing to make ready for the cooler months ahead. The ebb and flow of the seasons affects us, moving in and out like the tides of the ocean. As the seasons change you need to take time and focus on your body and how it is feeling. If your suddenly feeling much colder despite only a minimal change in temperature this could indicate that your hypothalamus or thyroid gland is having a hard time adjusting to the temperature changes. The hypothalamus is the first gland to sense the change in temperature. The cooler temperatures bring in a lot of airborne viruses and bacteria seeking a warm moist home in your sinus and lungs. This activity is termed "wind" in Chinese medicine. An invasion of wind would indicate that a pathogen has entered into the body. Perhaps this is where the idea of wearing hats and scarves to protect from getting a cold from the wind came from.  To protect your body from invading wind, the hypothalamus gland causes your sinus to secrete more fluid in response to the change in weather. Often this response is overactive (due to an undernourished glandular system), in which case, you will suddenly find you are clearing your throat a lot due to the excess drainage. You may also wake up with plugged ears, feel dizzy a lot, or develop a mild cough from the excess fluid dripping into the throat and ear canals overnight.  The herb Burdock Root (#140-2) nutritionally supports the hypothalamus gland and helps to stop this excessive drainage. Most people find taking 2 burdock morning and evening will support the hypothalamus and clear up these symptoms. Red Clover Blend liquid (#3420-9) is a good source of burdock for children. This formula also helps clear mucus from the lungs and sinus.

Since the Fall season is also the time that many people suffer from hay fever, another formula to consider is Sinus Support (#1250-3). This formula targets allergies, as it helps to shrink swollen inflamed sinus passages. The formula contains burdock which helps to stop sinus drainage related to the sudden change in temperatures. Other herbs in the formula act as an expectorant and a decongestant and help fight infection. These properties make Sinus Support a good formula for fall time allergies.

Getting back to our focus on the temperature changes, the thyroid gland must also make adjustments to your body temperature during cold months. If your thyroid gland is under active it may not keep up very well with sudden temperature drops. This may cause weight gain, sluggish energy and an inability to stay warm as the colder weather arrives. The herbal formula Thyroid Activator (#1224-0) provides plants which are high in iodine and other nutrients to nourish the thyroid. If you have noticed these symptoms with the change of weather try giving your thyroid a nutrient feast by taking 3 capsules 3 times daily through one bottle. This will help to quickly feed and perk up the thyroid. You can continue the formula at a lower dose for a couple months if you feel your body needs it.

One way to test at home to see if the thyroid has gotten sluggish is to do the Barnes Basal temperature test.  This is a simple method for testing thyroid function. Take an old-fashioned thermometer (not a digital thermometer) and shake down the thermometer the night before, leave it at your beside. When you wake up place the thermometer under your arm for ten minutes, don't get up or move around. Normal body temperature ranges for this test are between 97.8 and 98.2 degrees Fahrenheit. A reading below 97.8 may indicate an under active thyroid.  Take your temperature a few days in a row for accuracy. If you are menstruating, do not take your temperature on the first day of your cycle.

If your thyroid is consistently low you may want to have a doctor check your thyroid levels with a blood test.  Should your doctor confirm that the Thyroid is sluggish, consider feeding your thyroid nutritionally for a couple months before starting thyroid hormone. Often nutritional support can help the thyroid to re-activate again. In addition, evaluate your stress levels. When you are under high stress the hypothalamus will cause the pituitary to produce less thyroid stimulating hormone, thus producing decreased thyroid activity. I suggest taking 2-3 Nutri-Calm (#1640-2) daily if you are under high stress. The B-vitamins in the formula will support your response to stress as well as your thyroid function.

I want to point out that the hypothalamus gland plays a role in turning on thyroid activity.  The hypothalamus signals the body to release thyroid stimulating hormone, so if this gland is sluggish (re-read the second paragraph above) then your thyroid may appear sluggish as well. This is why it is so important to listen and pay attention to the symptoms your body is telling you.

Another symptom that the hypothalamus gland is sluggish would be an increase in appetite. People find themselves opening the refrigerator to look for food, but have no idea what they are looking for.  This happens because the body is craving nutrients to support the glandular function but is unable to find the right food to meet this need. A sluggish thyroid may also increase appetite by increasing cravings for carbohydrates. This may be in part because of the fatigue created by the low thyroid, as carbohydrates tend to give us an energy lift.

Since people find themselves reaching for more carbohydrates and sugary foods at this time of year, it is a good time to evaluate whether you are having trouble with blood sugar balancing. One symptom associated with this is to wake up in the morning with a feeling of grit or sand in the eyes or dry eyes. I see this symptom more at this time of year because people are reaching for the carbs and sugar late at night due to feeling fatigued all day. This creates an insulin surge in the night which affects your body's fluids, making them sticky or drying out. You wake up and there may be grit in the eyes, or dry sticky phlegm in your throat or mouth.

To help correct the sugar imbalance it may take more than just avoiding carbs or sugars before bed.  These symptoms indicate something called insulin resistance, which relates to your bodies inability to process sugar and get it into the cells. I’d recommend adding Sugar Reg (#927-1) to your nutritional program for a couple months while you work on improving your diet.

If the dryness is very severe I'd also add 1 Chinese HY-C TCM (#1006-1) daily as well. This formula is specific to dryness in the body, something the Chinese call a lack of Yin (or holding) energy in the body. 15 years ago a gentleman walked into our herb shop and told me that he has had no saliva in his mouth for 5 years. He had been evaluated by a panel of 12 doctors and they could not solve his problem. I recognized that he had a pattern of lack of yin energy in his body, and a loss of electrolytes from excessive sweating while jogging. Sodium is an electrolyte which helps to hold water in tissues. He bought the Chinese HY-C and some Alfalfa to provide electrolytes, a week later he came back into my store ecstatic that he was now making saliva again.

The body is an amazing thing, we forget that it is capable of healing itself and we forget it has a language to speak to us when it is out of balance. The change of seasons is an excellent time to reflect, plan and evaluate your goals for both your life direction and our health.  Because so many of us don't take the time to stop and reflect on our lives and direction we often move into a new season to find we are spun out of balance. So relax your breathing, take some deep breaths, and take a moment to contemplate how you can make changes to improve your health and life direction this fall season.
Blessings,
