Executive search firms have assisted in 36.7% of MBB HC hirings the past nine years, according to AthleticDirectorU's Boettger, who notes that 'Power 6' conferences are nearly twice as likely to tap search firms when hiring a new HC. Specifically, since 2010, 59% of 'Power 6' openings were filled with the help of a search firm, compared to just 31.6% of non-'Power 6' openings. 'Power 6' schools that have used search firms since 2010 have recorded an average HC tenure winning percentage of .525 versus a .519 clip for those who did not use a search firm. Among non-'Power 6', those who used a search firm recorded an average HC tenure winning percentage of .495, while those who didn't recorded an average winning percentage of .462. Overall, search-firm assisted hires have resulted in an average HC winning percentage of .504, compared to .469 for those who didn't. Lots more. (link)
UCF AD White expands on his position the Knights should have been included in this year's College Football Playoff, saying he hopes the selection committee has "heard our message," adding: "We think there's a 'Power 6' in college football. Our wins against Memphis and USF were not credited enough. Those teams were not ranked as high as they should've been. I think those games were harder than our game against Auburn, so I think our whole conference is underrated." White also notes UCF's position in Orlando as typical of other American schools, with "really young universities in great recruiting bases with huge student populations and massive alumni bases. That's the story of our conference."  Regarding the hiring of FB HC Heupel, White says last year's OC of the year at Missouri is of a similar offensive mind to former HC Frost, which has proven to be a "great fit" with players, adding: "He's got this great mix of confidence and humility." (link)
Seattle U. AD Fink recaps a solid competitive year for the Redhawks, "Athletics is contagious. Winning is contagious." Fink also reflects on her MBB search & hire last year, calls it the hardest part of her tenure so far, but notes the energy & enthusiasm around new HC Hayford, revels in Men's Soccer's win over Washington in the NCAA Tournament, says of the rivalry between the two brands, "It's good for Seattle having good, successful programs. We're going to keep at it. We're going to keep coming at them and I think that rivalry will keep growing." (link)
Florida State Softball student-athlete Warren, who last week was named Most Outstanding Player of the College World Series, has penned a "Dear Softball" letter, thanking the game for the "countless memories" and "friends and family you have brought into my life." She adds: "You have allowed me to travel the world and see things I could have never imagined seeing and do things I could have never imagined doing. You have given me the opportunity to grow your game and inspire so many young girls around the world. I will forever be in debt to you for the opportunities you have given me." Orlando Sentinel columnist Bianchi points to the letter and asks: "Now, to the many critics of the NCAA’s model of amateurism, let me ask you this: Does this sound like an exploited student-athlete?" Full letter and commentary from Bianchi. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
As Disney and Comcast prepare for a likely bidding war for large piece of 21st Century Fox, the prize of the acquisition may not be some of the massive IP franchises, such as X-Men or The Simpsons. Instead, the India media conglomerate Star India may prove to be the most coveted jewel as both American companies, neither of whom have a major presence on the subcontinent, plan to challenge Netflix in the streaming space while attempting to grow in emerging markets. With 60 channels in nine languages, Star India reaches 700 million customers per month, owns broadcasting rights for popular cricket tournaments and owns a stake in a Bollywood production company; however, Star India's most alluring selling point is perhaps Hotstar, a mobile-first streaming service with over 150 million monthly active viewers. Disney last year reached a $52.4B all-stock deal with 21st century Fox. Comcast has said it is in the "advanced stages" of an all-cash deal rival bid. (link)

Murray State Prez Davies has approved contract extensions for AD Ward, MBB HC McMahon and Women's Golf HC/SWA Milkman. Contracts for Ward and McMahon will run through 2022 while Milkman's contract will run through 2021. Davies: "These are three key positions within the department of Athletics and we are fortunate to have skilled and dedicated individuals serving the university. Athletics plays an important role in achieving the university’s mission and impacting our overall recruitment efforts. And it’s because of the leadership of Director Ward and head coaches McMahon and Milkman that our athletics program continues to excel both academically and athletically." (link)
Missouri AD Sterk says a lot of progress was made in year two of his tenure in Columbia, points primarily to an enhanced student-athlete experience. Thinks its possible to again sell-out of MBB season tickets with the return of key letter winners, non-committal on the return of a hoops matchup with Kansas, credits his marketing & ticketing teams for excelling on the WBB front, notes the SEC is still reviewing game management procedures in response to the situation with South Carolina, hopes the academic fraud probe is complete by the time the fall semester rolls around. More in this long interview. (link); Missouri is also looking into options for building an XC track in Columbia, according to AD Sterk, who says he is working with city officials to build a course that "will the hold high school championships, the SEC and maybe a national in the future. ... It is something that I think would put Mizzou on the map." (link)
Kansas's 247 Sports outlet gets input on the potential AD candidacy of Oklahoma Senior Assoc. AD for External Operations Mossman from its sister site covering the Sooners. FB facility expansion & success of the OU Softball program are two notable highlights for Mossman. There's also variables of being from Kansas, understanding the Big 12, close connections to local & national media & the growth of OU's in-house SoonerVision push. Does he have an interest? "Obviously as you know there’s a lot of moving parts in these kind of situations, and it’s entirely possible he hadn’t had contact. But you know it’s one of those things that can move really fast. I believe that he certainly is interested in the position. It’s obviously a major step for him if he’s offered the job and something that again he’s completely qualified for." (link)
Attorney Gipson has filed an open records lawsuit against Oklahoma's OU Foundation following the foundation's denial last week of a request regarding the University North Park arena and entertainment district proposal. In its denial, the foundation wrote that it is independent of the university and not a public body; therefore, it is not subject to open its internal records for public consumption. Gipson, who filed the request on behalf of 70 residents, responded: "When you read our petition and see the attachments, you’ll see that [the foundation] freely [takes] assets -- uses both university employees and university property -- to further the university foundation. They are really, for most purposes, one and the same." (link)
More Personnel: Former Arizona Women's Tennis AC Stotland returns to Tucson as HC after six years at Fresno State in the same role. (link); University of Alabama System Chancellor Hayes will step down at the end of July after just two years on the job to focus on developing behavioral health resources for students on the system's trio of campuses. (link); Alaska Anchorage goes with University of Wisconsin Colleges Chancellor Sandeen to fill the same role in The City of Lights and Flowers. (link)
November of 2020 is the target date for completion of Arizona State's new 5K-seat venue for Hockey & a cohort of Olympic sports. Sun Devils AD Anderson on potential conference affiliations for Hockey, "We are keeping it completely open because as the stature of our program and the commitment we've made becomes very clear to folks in the hockey world, we've got a lot of folks advocating for us, even coveting us to be members of their conference. Right now, we're a free agent and we like it that way because we're building up pretty good leverage." Also, on the impact to Athletics of all the university's construction in Tempe, "If you move us, you improve us. When you evict us, you'd better be ready to improve our situation. Michael Crow has bought into that. So we either have to get evicted sooner or we have to come up with the lion's share of the start-up costs in terms of our philanthropy." (link)
A former Sacred Heart student will spend a year in jail for fabricating a rape report against two former Pioneer FB student-athletes. According to an affidavit, "She admitted that she made up the allegation of sexual assault against (the football players) because it was the first thing that came to mind and she didn’t want to lose (another male student) as a friend and potential boyfriend. She stated that she believed when (the other male student) heard the allegation it would make him angry and sympathetic to her." Sacred Heart Communications Director Noack says no student-athletes were stripped of their scholarships as part of the developments, though their counsel indicates one of the student-athletes "lost a year of NCAA eligibility." (link)
Mississippi is well down the road to allowing full sports gambling, but what about neighboring Alabama? Former Democratic Governor Siegelman: "I think there’s been a change in attitude, a slight change in attitude, maybe an unwitting change in attitude. I don’t think the evangelicals would organize and execute a plan to defeat sports betting with the same passion and enthusiasm that they mustered in 1999." Key Southern Baptist Convention leader Moore: "I’m not concerned that evangelicals are changing their position on gambling, as much as I’m concerned that there’s often a kind of fatalism that assumes that gambling is going to be part of every economy." So, all in all, sports gambling seems more than possible in another notable Bible Belt state. (link)
The Iran Men's Soccer national team and Nike no longer have a deal because of U.S. sanctions against the country. Statement from the Swoosh: "The sanctions mean that, as a U.S. company, we cannot provide shoes to players in the Iran national team at this time." (link); Tennis great Federer splits with Nike for the first time in his career. Goes instead with Japanese clothes manufacturer Uniqlo in a $30M/year deal. (link)
Also Noticed: Vanderbilt Baseball HC Corbin on last night's epic game three Super Regionals match-up with Mississippi State: "They can play in professional baseball but they won’t play in games like this unless they make the [MLB] World Series... They won’t get this again, this won’t happen again. You go off and play professional baseball, you think that’s something special, not like this." (link); The Athletic's Anderson will continue writing books, but has officially joined Alabama Governor hopeful Maddox as his speechwriter. Someone leaving The Athletic seems like a first. (link); Former Arizona Track & Field AC Carter, who was sentenced to five years in prison last month after being found guilty of domestic violence and assault charges against a former Wildcat student-athlete, has already been disciplined in prison three times in the past two weeks for disobeying verbal or written orders. 20-first gender consulting firm leader Wittenberg-Cox in defense of her "extreme moderation" work style in an age where leaders work more than ever & measuring inputs & outputs to the fullest degree are en vogue. "I do everything with the deliberate intent of finding a balance between two extremes — doing nothing and doing too much. I want to do a reasonable job at the different parts of my life and a stellar job at the balance between all of them." Wittenberg-Cox's four pillars of balance: 1) Brain (knowledge, relevance, professional expertise, lifelong learning); 2) Love (relationships, family, community, care); 3) Change (openness to self-question, networks, transition skills); and, 4) Choice (financial flexibility, savings, earning power). What are your guiding principles & life pillars? What ratio of time did you spend on each the last seven years & how what balance would you like for the next seven? (link)
