Outgoing Sun Belt Commish Benson reiterates that he has had zero conversation with his peers on possible expansion to the College Football Playoff. However, "We’ve always been looking for greater access and anyone who asks if we prefer an eight-team playoff, I said if it creates greater access for the Sun Belt Conference, of course I would have to support that. But we also know that that decision isn’t going to be made by the five non-guaranteed conferences. That decision is going to be in the hands of the Power 5 conferences and rightfully so." A bit more, "The system has benefited and the system has accommodated the Sun Belt and the other conferences. Obviously UCF has brought greater attention to whether they deserve a chance at one of those four [seminal] spots." (link)
Dave Hart is the "gift that keeps on giving" at ECU, per Bonesville's Friedlander. Navigating the Pirates through most of 2018, aiding in the hire of new AD Gilbert & securing the cash to minimize the department's debt are all key Hart contributions during his second stint in Greenville. Friedlander on the Hart-Gilbert combo, "In many cases, it might be uncomfortable for the new man in charge to have an older, more accomplished 'consultant' around looking over his shoulder. Not here. […] The two men are friends who like each other personally and respect each other professionally. Their partnership and the trust they have in one another promises to create a formidable leadership team." (link)
Winthrop AD Halpin has been named to the NCAA Division I Council, effective immediately. His term runs through July, at which point he will be eligible for a four-year appointment. Halpin: "It's truly an honor to be selected to represent the Big South Conference. I look forward to serving with members that I have long respected, and together we will advance the mission of the NCAA while keeping the student-athlete experience front and center." (link)
Georgetown AD Reed & Executive Director of the Hoyas' Cooper Athletics Leadership Program Ozery cover some good ground on prioritizing student-athlete development for AthleticDirectorU. Reed: "We don't talk about bigger, faster, stronger to win a game. We talk about life through sport....gaining the competitive edge in life through sport. […] At our place, it's about shared governance. It isn't about me running the athletics department. It's about partnering with our coaches, partnering with our staff, and partnering with our SAAC to make decisions as it relates to our athletics program." Ozery: "Transition periods are very significant for Student-Athlete Development. So focusing on these point in their experience is very important. […] We really have to understand that coaches are doing a whole lot more than just coaching Xs & Os." (link)
The CFP has commissioned notable 3D pop artist Fazzino to create some limited edition pieces for the events fifth anniversary. Executive Director Hancock: "His iconic pop art will dazzle fans of college football and our great event." (link); As an example, here's Fazzino's piece from the 2018 Major League Baseball All-Star Game. (link)

247 Sports' unofficial 2018 college football attendance report: Michigan topped the list with 110,736 average for seven home games. The rest: Penn State (105,485/7), Ohio State (101,947/7), Alabama (101,561/7), LSU (100,819/7), Texas A&M (99,844/7), Texas (97,712/6), Tennessee (93,022/7), Georgia (92,746/7), and Nebraska (89,034/7). Interestingly, Tennessee's 90.7% capacity was the lowest among the top-10, while Michigan's 102.9% was the highest. (link)
Michigan State gets the green light to expand its Skandalaris Football Center to the tune of $6.7M to add more office space, "refresh existing amenities" & upgrade technology around the building. A bit more, "...new graphics, finishes and digital displays, transforming the Hall of History into 'a beacon at night' with new monitors on the east and south walls." (link)
Really interesting WSJ piece with Purdue Prez Daniels on the state of the university, his leadership style & higher ed as a product. This is a really good one, "I’ll speak to an audience of businesspeople and say: Here’s the racket that you should have gone into. You’re selling something, a college diploma, that’s deemed a necessity. And you have total pricing power. When you raise your prices, you not only don’t lose customers, you may actually attract new ones." Innovation has been a staple of Daniels' five-year run in West Lafayette as he hasn't raised tuition, was the first to invite Amazon to do a brick & mortar on campus, introduced an Income Share Agreement as a student loan option, purchased & revamped an on-line education brand, plus more. On the latter, "...there are 35 to 40 million Americans by most counts who started college and didn’t finish." (link)
Navalent co-founder Carucci for HBR: "When A Leader Is Causing Conflict, Start By Asking Why." Carucci's three ways for making sure you're addressing the right problem with a challenging leader the right way: 1) Manage your assumptions and judgments; 2) Look past symptoms to contradictions; and 3) Have a broad repertoire of solutions. Conclusion: "Mislabeling behavior or a person as beyond help is one way we fail leaders. If you don’t look for contradictions, get to the root cause, and have a range of solutions, you could unwittingly limit someone’s growth or, even worse, derail their career." (link)
San Jose State AD Tuite raps with 1.Question's Brown on making collaborative decisions. Notable takeaways: "It's important as an administrator that your staff feels comfortable disagreeing with you. […] We hear leaders often say they don't want a lot of 'yes' people working with them. But when someone does disagree with them, the leader doesn't handle it well. […] I always ask my staff, 'If you were the athletics director, what would you do?' […] I doubt that there is a successful Division I athletics director that doesn't have a strong senior leadership team." 15-minute convo. (link)
The Herald's McCormick points to Winthrop MBB's matchup with Hiwassee (NCCAA) yesterday as a "symptom of a much bigger problem in college hoops." That problem? Per Eagles AD Halpin, "...you get in this back and forth of how do I make a competitive schedule, and how do I not schedule myself (HC Kelsey) out of a job if I’m not careful." McCormick points to P5s playing P5s in non-conference, buy games & expanding P5 league slates as an overall picture at why some low-majors have to schedule non-DIs. East Tennessee State HC Forbes continues to advocate for a consortium of notable low-majors to play each other annually. Big South Commish Kallander: "I tell the coaches, if you think you’re contending for a conference championship, you should build up your schedule. If you’re gonna win the league and go before the selection committee, they’re gonna say, 'who did you play, who did you beat?'" More. (link)
Nevada will discontinue its rifle program after this season & add Men's Cross Country, which will participate in the Mountain West beginning in the fall of 2019. AD Knuth: "These are not easy decisions, and we’ve gone to great lengths to examine, identify and chart the best course of action for Nevada athletics. Our department is forever thankful for the service and dedication of Fred Harvey, our rifle coach of 23 years and a longtime University employee, as well as the many distinguished student-athletes who competed for our rifle program over the years." The scholarships for all current rifle student-athletes will be honored. (link)
Also Noticed: Jackson State and Bethune-Cookman will face off in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge in Atlanta next FB season. (link); Kent State used 16 micro campaigns in a crowdfunding effort to surpass a $100K goal and raise $150K from 1,100 different gifts. Baseball led all sports with a $40K haul. (link); USC Men's Volleyball student-athlete Lewis is using his platform to be an advocate for his sport and his LGBT community. (link); Implications in the college space? "A Green Bay Packers fan will not be able to wear his team garb on the Chicago Bears' sidelines Sunday while participating in the NFL team's pregame fan program after an Illinois federal judge kicked his bid to block a rule prohibiting non-Bears gear at the event." (link); FIU FB student-athlete Phillips arrested on domestic violence charges and will not make the trip to the Bahamas Bowl. The alleged incident took place in June. (link)
