Just three days into the groundbreaking trial, Ploetz v. NCAA got settled yesterday. NCAA Chief Legal Officer Remy: "The settlement gives all parties the opportunity to resolve the case outside of a lengthy trial. The NCAA does not admit liability as part of the settlement. We will continue to defend the Association vigorously in all jurisdictions where similar unwarranted individual cases are pursued. It is our hope that other plaintiffs’ lawyers recognize that this is one settlement in one case." Sports Illustrated legal expert McCann: "Ploetz v. NCAA was the first ever CTE and football case to go to trial. A settlement means we remain without a court decision on the merits of the legal arguments--and legal defenses--in football concussion litigation." (link, link)
The Fresno Bee's Warszawski says the there's no coincidence that the now high-profile legal standoff between Fresno State & former AD Bartko is occurring as the Bulldogs are conducting interviews for its open AD chair. Warszawski's view, "I'm thinking the university had better respond, because the context and subtext of Bartko's claim is pretty damning. If unchallenged, it will be accepted as truth in the court of public opinion. Bartko was a popular figure in the community, remains so in some circles, and the last thing Fresno State needs at present is another reason for fans and boosters to go 'Hmm, hold up a minute' before buying football tickets or donating to the scholarship fund." Bartko's full 13-page claim form, as well as his settlement agreement with the university, are within the piece. New info including Bartko walking into Prez Castro's office for what he believed to be a regular one-on-one meeting, only to be given five minutes to decide whether to resign or be fired. In a memo from the NBA office to all organizations there's mention of possible eligibility rules changes for the league as early as 2021 "related to player development and the corruption investigation in college basketball." The one-and-done rule is not mentioned specifically, but here's more context from the memo, "As we approach the NBA Draft on June 21 and the increase in trade activity that often accompanies it, please be reminded of this ongoing review and the possibility that the eligibility rules could change (between 2021 and 2024)." (link)
How does newish Houston AD Pezman plan to keep up from a financial standpoint for the Cougars when some donors remember 20 years ago when UH was in the same league as financial giants Texas & Texas A&M? Pezman: "That sort of thing is in everyone’s thoughts. There are natural rivalries that people have in their minds that involve institutions that we compare ourselves to. It’s still very prevalent. It doesn’t feel generational. It’s a mindset I see in current and former students." Notable donor & Houston Rockets owner Fertitta would like to see Houston's budget reach the $70M range (~$57M in 2017), believes the solution is simply to win in all sports, "We are not satisfied with eight wins in football or with 20 basketball wins. […] If you can average 40,000 for football instead of 31,000 and 7,000 for basketball instead of 3,000, you’d be surprised at what you can bring in. I’ve seen it with the Rockets. Louisiana AD Maggard camps with the Lafayette Daily Advertiser to discuss his first year leading the Ragin' Cajuns. Thinks his biggest accomplishment in his first 14 months was nailing down an organizational structure, with approximately 10 new staff members, including Deputy AD for External Yantko, Asst. AD for Communications/Digital Strategy Crawford and Dir. of Marketing Whelan. Still a handful of staff hires to be made, but pleased with the coaching changes thus far. Calls the change with softball HCs a "situation we had to deal with." Maggard acknowledges that getting the department to optimal operational efficiency was the most time-consuming aspect of the job thus far. Still thinks there is room for improvement on his oft-stated goal of transparency. As for year two? "That’s the one thing that excites me every day when I get up and come to work. So have we made positive strides? Yes. But we have more to do."  (link)
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) top administrator Pruitt again linked to college sports tickets & more questions about how he wields influence. This time it's tickets to the Rose Bowl between Oklahoma & Georgia earlier this year that he purchased five days before kick at a face value of $175 each, thanks to OU regent Stone "who runs Saxum, a large marketing firm with energy industry clients that have included the American Petroleum Institute and G.E. Oil and Gas." Similar tickets on secondary markets were "as much as seven times more expensive." (link)
In the aftermath of recent sexual assault & harassment claims involving student-athletes in College Station, Texas A&M Prez Young says the university will review its sexual misconduct policies & procedures. Young: "To that end, I have ordered comprehensive reviews to be conducted — one by an independent third-party; the other by an internal task force — that will test every step of our processes for safety, support, sensitivity, timeliness and fairness to all involved that meets the highest standards." Part of the effort includes "the Dean of Student Life has contacted people who publicly self-identified to offer them confidential help." (link)
Bizarre story out of UNC Wilmington indicates Baseball Pitching Coach Williams may have been released from his duties earlier in the month due to his role promoting a dildo as a motivational tool. Guest speaker Cain, who calls himself "the foremost authority on Mental Performance," had also worked with other Seahawks teams, introduced the idea & object back in 2017. Looks like there may have been earlier efforts to jettison Williams, which were met with considerable pushback from the program's student-athletes & even included the possibility of not wearing UNCW jerseys in a game against NC State back in April. No additional comments from anyone at the university beyond wishing Williams well in his future endeavors. (link)

With things getting underway in Omaha today, the state of the game around the nation is described as "at a place of equilibrium" by D1Baseball's Fitt with pitchers & hitters having a balanced impact on outcomes, unlike past seasons that were heavily tilted one way or another. Committee chair & South Carolina AD Tanner believes continued focus on time of play is crucial. Florida HC O'Sullivan points to some leagues using ear pieces for catchers to communicate pitch calling as also allowing a virtually unlimited number of coaching visits to the mound using the catcher as the proxy. There's also some talk about the MLB Draft moving to the Thursday before Supers, as to not interfere with the narrative of Regional play, like we unfortunately saw a few weeks ago. (linklink)

Kentucky AD Barnhart announces the hire of new Executive Assoc. AD for Student-Athlete Experience Cummins & the build-out of a Student-Athlete Experience department. Barnhart: "We owe it to our student-athletes to be innovative in the way we support their growth and we will continue to invest in them, which is exactly what we are doing by placing a renewed emphasis on their experience." Cummins, a 20-year Army veteran & Apache helicopter pilot, had been consulting UK for a number of years, "This is a shared responsibility that spans not only our athletics department, but also our campus and our community. I have witnessed firsthand the university’s commitment to this endeavor, and I am excited to join an amazing team." Also of note, longtime Assoc. Arizona State AD Anderson: "It's very difficult to walk it back. No matter what the coach says, the boosters, the alums, anybody on campus who is not in your camp, they're just saying, 'Uh, huh, you don't want to be here. Why am I gonna go the extra mile? How do I believe that you're not going to be in that same conversation next year?'" Dodd centers on Tennessee's recent FB HC search & all the names involved as an unnamed 'Power 5' AD comments, "Agents aren't doing anything clients don't want." Additional perspective, this one from Nebraska AD Moos, "My personal theory is that I need to know about [coaches' job interests]… I would be upset if I wasn't aware. You get some egg on your face. The Athletic's Olson says Oklahoma State FB HC Gundy "doesn't deserve" public comments by Pokes AD Holder on the recruiting output of Gundy & his staff. Olson: "What Holder offered are complaints without solutions. Actually, what he thinks he offered is motivation. But asking Gundy to do 'a little bit more recruiting' demonstrates a lack of appreciation for the difficulty of recruiting to that program and in that state. [...] Holder does not have to be impressed by how Gundy does it, but he’d be wise to respect it." (link); The Dallas Morning News' Carlton calls the situation, "valid, but unnecessary." Carlton: "If you're Holder, it's OK to wonder what Gundy could do with top 15 recruiting classes on a regular basis. But it might be more productive to pass along that observation, you know, privately." (link)
Like any national championship pursuit, there's a number of interesting stories for the College World Series, but maybe none more so than how Mississippi State, under interim HC Henderson & with AD Cohen conducting a national search for a new skipper, got things together after early season drama & advanced to Omaha. According to the NCAA, it's the first time a squad with an interim boss has made it to the CWS. Every player & staff member signed a white board with the words Honesty, Integrity, Competitive, Men Not Boys soon after the exit of former HC Cannizaro, which still sits prominently in MSU's locker room. Liberty AD McCaw Q&As on the coming move to the Atlantic Sun for his Flames portfolio, "Certainly the recruiting markets are very attractive; for us to be able to get into Florida and those Bible Belt states should really help our recruiting a great deal. We like the television markets. They have four of the top 30 national markets with New York, Atlanta, Nashville and Orlando, and eight top-80 markets. It’s great exposure and brand building for the university. That’s very much a positive. In a number of sports, they are a multi-bid league. So there just won’t be the automatic qualifier from the postseason championship. There will be multiple bids. We saw that in baseball this year, softball perennially we expected that to be the case, volleyball they have a chance to do that, and it’s certainly a very highly competitive basketball conference." Expects to meet with ESPN over the summer to talk more about the league's deal & how to best leverage LU broadcasts, points to possible travel efficiencies & says there was no talk of delaying the ASUN move. (link)
As far as revenue goes, things are looking up for Louisville FB, but the Cards expect a 13% drop in MBB for the upcoming fiscal year. A decline in last season's ticket sales and the upcoming home schedule are part of the picture. Under first-year HC Mack, ticket sales are estimated to generate $13.1M and total revenue for the program looks to be $25.6M for FY19. FB expects a 10% increase in revenue, with a projected $16.4M from ticket sales (up from $13.8M last year) thanks to an extra home game and 6K additional seats in Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. The $2.75M paycheck for the season opener in Orlando against Alabama helps offset the projected 9% dip in annual seat donations, as well. The athletic department has budgeted almost $9.2M in contingency funds for FY19. (link)
Facilities: The financial performance of the newly named Canvas Stadium at Colorado State exceeded expectations, despite missing the mark on parking projections. Deputy AD Cottingham: "The one thing, in hindsight, our parking missed a little bit. The irony is because the mass transit did so well. That's sort of air in the balloon." That surplus, coupled with the still-secret construction cost surplus will be unveiled in due time. CSU Prez Frank: "We're not going to spike the ball after one year of the model working. But for the model to work as well as it did and to have exceeded expectations and parameters in so many places, I can't imagine a better first start to that. Now we just have to keep that going and sustain that and not lose our focus on it." (link); North Carolina A&T's Aggie Stadium will be renamed BB&T Stadium under a 15-year deal that includes $1.5M to be used towards renovations of the facility. The Idaho Statesman profiles Boise State Baseball HC Van Tol, who is charged with returning the Broncos to the college baseball scene in 2020. CWS participant Texas Tech could be one of the opening weekend opponents as Van Tol works on scheduling for that first season. To date he is the only staff member - though he hopes to hire an assistant once the current season is complete - there are 13 players committed to join in 2018 or 2019, he will hold open tryouts on campus and he has an eye on a handful of Division I transfers. AD Apsey: "That says a lot about a guy that can recruit to a place that doesn’t have a team yet. He can talk about the dream, the culture he wants to create. He doesn’t just want to start a program, he wants it to be a good one. To me, that’s impressive and it justifies the reason he’s our head coach." Van Tol: "The interest has been overwhelming, in a good way, from people interested in coming here to play or coach. We’re getting into crunch time with all that, so those things are starting to come together, you’re seeing the program really moving ahead." Blue turf for the Baseball field? More. (link)
This headline from the Detroit Free Press pretty much says it all: "2 Michigan State trustees, more lawmakers say Engler should step down." They are referring, of course, to MSU Interim Prez Engler in the wake of the news that Engler suggested a high-profile victim of former Spartans Dr. Nassar was likely getting kickbacks from trial attorneys involved in lawsuits against the school. Trustee Mosallam: ""It has become abundantly clear to me that this crisis will not truly settle until John Engler steps down as interim president. Unfortunately, and with great regret, John Engler’s tenure as interim president has continued the bleeding rather than stem it. I no longer believe that John Engler’s presence on this campus will allow Michigan State University to move forward. We need leadership that sets a tone of empathy and compassion towards our courageous survivors, and re-embraces them as important members of our Spartan community. John Engler simply can no longer do that. And for these reasons, John Engler should step down immediately as this university's interim president." "The third referee will have the final decision to confirm or reverse the original ruling or determine if the review was inconclusive. The third referee will sit at the scorer’s table with direct and easy access to the challenge review system monitor. The NCAA Women’s Volleyball Rules Committee wants to see if the addition of a third referee speeds up the review process and removes any perception of the second referee’s inability to overturn crew calls."
