Two weeks looks to be the timeline Gonzaga is working off of to make a decision on a potential move to the Mountain West. Zags AD Roth: "We're going to be closing on a window that is going to be making it difficult. I think we're into that crunch period for sure if we're going to try to get it done for the fall of 2018. At the same time, we're not going to rush the decision because of timing. [...] This isn't a no-brainer decision for us by any stretch."'s Dodd does some math on how much more the MWC's media deals could push to the Bulldogs & figures its in the neighborhood of $375K. However, Roth points to the benefit of stronger league play that would allow MBB to not have to be so aggressive it its non-conference slate. GU is using College Sports Solutions' Schemmel to work through the process. More from Roth: "Craig (Thompson) has done a lot of work recently trying to nail some things down. The finalists pool for Augustana's (DII) AD opening has a decidedly DI flavor as three of the four administrators still in the mix are Michigan State Asst. AD of Development Morton, Northern Iowa Deputy AD for External Operations Schofield & Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Deputy AD Whipple. The fourth leader on the list is St. Mary's (MN) (DIII) AD Fennern. Arizona rolls out new renderings for facility projects at Arizona Stadium, the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center, Hillenbrand Softball Stadium, the Indoor Sports Center & the McKale Center locker rooms. All five are part of the $66M upgrade plans Wildcats AD Heeke got approved last September. Of note, "While some athletics departments spend lavishly on overdone facilities, our goal is to provide student-athletes with the amenities they need to maximize their potential, while remaining fiscally responsible in the process. […] Strategically, we have been forward thinking in order to make significant down payments, while borrowing at historically low interest rates, which has allowed us to complete projects in a timely fashion." Lots more pictures & descriptions. UT Chattanooga now has a financial plan in place to add & renovate 70,000 square feet of space to McKenzie Arena that will include a new sports medicine space, classrooms & meeting rooms, as well as a new FB locker room & coaches offices. A handful of key donors have advanced the project with their commitments as Mocs AD Wharton notes, "A facility of this stature will impact our entire athletics program. Not only does it give new areas for our football and athletic training programs, it frees up additional space we currently use every day in McKenzie Arena. It is exciting to know that the vision of this asset to our University is becoming a reality." (link)

Crimson Tide AD Byrne, simply, "I’ll say that we are exploring some home-and-homes." (link); North Dakota will continue bidding to host regionals in the NCAA Men's Hockey Tournament & UND's inclusion is not a factor, per Asst. AD for Operations Martinson, "Absolutely not. The parity in this sport is huge, so there's always a possibility that UND won't be there. But the culture that Brad Berry and the UND program has is to win a national championship. We have to take that same mindset as administrators and say, 'Hey, we're going to do everything we can. We want to plan for UND to be there under that culture.' But either way, we're happy to do something like this to provide an event to fans in the region, knowing that we're going to do a good job." (link)

CBS Sports Chairman McManus on Kentucky MBB's loss in the Sweet 16: "From a television standpoint, you really root for the big teams. Last night’s Kentucky outcome was not good for us and not good for TBS at all. Kentucky being the blue bloods that they are, and having the television draw that they have, that really hurt us. Kansas State winning — I have nothing against Kansas State as a school or a team — but that really hurt us. [...] And that was a game Kentucky should’ve won. All they gotta do is hit a few free throws at the end of the game and they win that game — that really hurt us." McManus also indicated Loyola Chicago's run certainly helps in the large Chicago market, points to the reality of starting & ending games late to optimize ratings. (link)
Miami (FL) rolled out its new Hurricane Club membership structure in response to the federal tax code changes that went into place this year. Two types: Season Tickets & Student Impact Donations, the latter of which will "elevate your member experience and maximize support provided to UM student-athletes." Different tiers & benefits start at the $50, $250, $750, $1,500, $3,000 & $5,000 marks. Montana Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Gee comments on getting added to the DI Council, "I feel really confident in my ability to look through proposals, get the feedback from all of the administrators within the conference and get into that room and have those discussions and vote appropriately." Gee will join the group a couple of months early to take over the spot vacated by Eastern Washington-to-North Dakota AD Chaves, before starting a full three-year term. (link)
We don't have designated get-back coaches in college basketball yet, but maybe we will some day soon as keeping HCs in their designated boxes is a constant struggle that can lead to technical fouls as the New York Times' Tracy reviews the box. Kansas State HC Weber: "My thing is, if you yell at the refs, you should get a technical. […] If we’re coaching our guys, that’s what we’re paid to do." HCs nationwide believe they should get the benefit of the doubt on coaching student-athletes, which is why NCAA secretary-rules editor Hyland says the coaches box was expanded this year. Retired high-profile official Hightower on what he would commonly tell violators, plus some context, "You don’t want to make me do something I don’t want to do. Ninety percent of the time, I would say, the coaches are just so caught up in the moment, coaching their kids. It’s an emotional sport." (link)

Georgia Associate Equipment Manager Purvis has been arrested and charged with four felonies and a misdemeanor. The three felonies are for illegal eavesdropping/surveillance after a hidden camera was discovered in a shower in Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall, which is home to the FB team's locker room, training facility and weight room. UGA spokesman Felton: "As soon as it learned of the incident, the Athletic Association notified the University of Georgia Police Department, who began their investigation. The University took immediate action, and the employee was terminated early in the investigation. Based on the findings of the police investigation, no student-athletes were victims in this incident." (link)
Western Kentucky MBB is in the NIT Final Four after victories against Boston College, USC and Oklahoma State, giving the Hilltoppers a 5-2 record this season against squads in the top-seven MBB leagues. The last two games, and Tuesday's upcoming title with Utah, have been aired on the ESPN family of networks, bringing WKU significant brand exposure. HC Stansbury: "This is something for Western Kentucky. The amount of publicity we’ve gotten and are continuing to get, there’s no money value on that right now. Going to New York right now, being the only (men’s) team in the state of Kentucky still playing, how much effect does that have on students making decisions on where they’re going to college? Believe it or not, it has a lot of impact, because they see Western Kentucky can be as good as anybody in the country right here at home. It’s impactful for everybody: Fans, future students, our players and our team." With a decline in enrollment and $15M university budget shortfall - $1M of which is being slashed from athletics - this exposure is crucial. AD Stewart: "A successful athletics program and, in this instance, a successful team like our men’s basketball program, is in a unique position that can help a university. It’s no secret the biggest challenge our university has right now is our declining enrollment. A successful athletics program will actually help enrollment grow." New Mexico State netted $265,038 for FB's appearance in the Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl in December. AD Moccia: "I never imagined that north of $250,000 would be possible. The Sun Belt gives you an opportunity to break even with ticket sales. But when you have geography work in your favor and a team that people want to see, you can have a windfall. Geography and our success was the recipe that turned it into a lucrative endeavor." Bowl revenues totaled $609,122, with $283K from the Sun Belt, $150K for travel and half of all ticket sales, which totaled $164,582. Expenses were $344,084, including $200K+ for travel, $73K for per diem, housing and feeding members of the FB team, $23.5K for gear, $38K for bonuses. (link)
Jonesboro businessman and Arkansas State donor Fowler says the Red Wolves Foundation and an athletic department official provided misleading intel on the bidding process for a FB stadium project. ASU System Prez Welch apologized for the situation, but Fowler, whose family has contributed millions to the school, says he is done: "Not anymore, not after this. That is the opinion of the family." NFL Commish Goddell chats with the Wall Street Journal on key topics surrounding his league, starting with, "The stability of our league has never been stronger and firmer. That doesn’t mean we’re not realistic about the challenges. We have them." One league owner on the possibility of profiting from legalized sports gambling, "Why would we let other people have all the benefit of something we’re creating?" Goddell's view, "We have to be prepared for any alternative." Goddell also says the league is not focused on changing any rules around players standing for the national anthem.
