North Dakota's choice is Eastern Washington AD Chaves, who will head east to Grand Forks after 10-plus years leading the Eagles. UND Prez Kennedy: "I am excited about the impact Bill Chaves’ leadership will have on an already excellent Athletics program here at UND. […] We were pleased with the selection of the four candidates, which made it a challenging decision. We received excellent input from the forums, from those who attended interview sessions, and from the search committee members. All of the candidates fared well, but in the end Bill was a notch ahead of the other candidates." Chaves calls it a "tremendous opportunity," says he's "deeply honored," confident he can help to "continue UND’s tradition of academic and athletic excellence." (link)
Eastern Washington Prez Cullinan comments on Chaves' coming departure, "I will be working with Bill Chaves immediately to implement a transition plan as the university begins the process of finding a new athletic director. Details on that plan, including interim leadership and a time table, will be made public when details are finalized within the next several days. Eastern will greatly miss Bill Chaves, who has created a lasting legacy for this university. I wish him excellent continued success." (link); One of the challenges Cullinan may face during her search is the university-wide $5.8M budget deficit & a request for all departments to shave off some spending. Fundraising initiatives are in the works as the university consulted with Phoenix Philanthropy Group to help turn the knob. EWU still has an opening in its 2018 FB schedule & a guarantee game away from home could help to generate dollars. The Spokesman-Review's Allen notes how the financial crunch in Cheney comes at a time when other Big Sky peers, like Montana, are opening new athletics facilities. (link)
UC Santa Barbara MBB played at Hawaii late last night & were startled early yesterday with reports a missile was headed to the islands. Assoc. AD for Communications Mahoney: "We were either huddled in the bathroom, in the stairwells or out in the halls. The warning said to stay away from the windows. It was bizarre. […] When we got to the lobby, we were figuring out where to go when it soon became apparent it was a mistake. There were no sirens and the hotel staff was in contact with the authorities. Not long after that we received another alert that said the first one was false. I think most of the guys felt worse for the natives working in the hotel. Some of them were really, really disturbed and very emotional." (link)
With his FB HC hire squared away, Nebraska AD Moos has dived into meeting every member of his department & understanding some of the key inner dynamics for the Huskers. "My practice is not to come in and break the furniture. It’s to get a feel for things and how the organizational chart was before I got here. And then either tweak or do a major overhaul to be the most efficient we can be." Moos has tabbed three unnamed senior leaders to help evaluate the overall personnel team, says he's starting to get more of a "feel" for where MBB stands as many in the media have pointed to HC Miles teetering on the edge. Moos says he does not subscribe to the notion that a FB school can't also be solid in hoops & is impressed with how Executive Assoc. Interesting read from the Denver Post on how airlines are fully tuning-in to social media in an attempt to properly navigate the PR & customer communication functions of issues big & small. Customer service firm Conversocial measured how rapidly carriers responded to social mentions during a four-day span with JetBlue, Virgin & Alaska topping the list as the quickest. American engaged with the highest percentage of mentions (32.5%), while Air Canada was at the other end of the spectrum (10.3%). No correlation offered in the study on how social media response times or methods impacted customer satisfaction. (link)

After spending nine years as AD at Southern Illinois, New Mexico State boss Moccia returned to his alma mater back in 2015 & the Las Cruces Sun-News' Groves says the Aggies are now "flying high." FB's success is a key piece of the story, as is the continued momentum for MBB & a balanced budget for three-straight years. Moccia says "an unbelievable outpouring of humanity" has been the most impressive outcome of FB's first push to the post-season in 57 years, plans to have ticket renewals in the mail by the end of this week that include some $10 to $15 price increases. Indicates MBB tix sales are trending above expectations & that there's been little talk on extending his contract that currently runs through December of next year. Keith Jackson, undoubtedly one of the best broadcasters of all time, passed away yesterday at the ripe young age of 89. Disney boss Iger: "For generations of fans, Keith Jackson was college football. When you heard his voice, you knew it was a big game. Keith was a true gentleman and a memorable presence. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Turi Ann, and his family." USC AD Swann: "Keith covered games I played in and we worked together at ABC Sports for decades. Every step of the way, he shared his knowledge and his friendship. Not just the voice, but the spirit of college football. With Idaho transitioning to FCS, the Vandals' rivalry with Eastern Washington is set to get louder as less than 100 miles separate the two campuses & gridiron matchups are on the horizon. Last night featured a hoops doubleheader between the two with Idaho taking the Men's contest & EWU winning on the Women's side, both amid a heightened fan turnout. The Spokesman-Review's Grippi: "If last night’s basketball games tell us anything, they tell us this is where the Vandals and the Eagles belong." (link)

HC Notes: As of mid-day yesterday, Navy AD Gladchuk said he was still trying to separate fact & fiction on reports Midshipmen FB HC Niumatalolo had interviewed at Arizona last week. Gladchuk was scheduled to meet with Niumatalolo last night. (link); With former Nebraska FB HC Riley back in the fold at Oregon State, the Beavers are only paying Riley $50K to serve as Asst. HC, which won't do much to mitigate the $6.63M the Huskers still owe Riley. The math works out to $165K per month from UNL. Recently finished a thick manual all his coaching staff are required to read on how he views leadership & coaching styles. Prez of Baseball Operations Kenney: "We have a big passion for controlling our own destiny. It’s sort of like conversations in the real estate market. We like controlling our own destiny. Florida Representative Olszewski sent a letter to Big 12 Commish Bowlsby on Wednesday asking the league boss to keep UCF and USF "at the top of mind" for any possible future expansion of the league. A former staffer in the USF athletic department, Olszewski went with the potential TV revenue approach, "I think because of the business analytics of college football, it would be extremely logical for the Big 12 to look at who can give them the most television revenue. And getting USF and UCF with the media markets they represent in Florida would be a wonderful fit. That’s a whole lot of eyeballs that are gonna be watching college football games." Olszewski goes on to say he thinks what happens to the league in 2025, which is the year Bowlsby's contract and the Big 12 media rights expire, has a lot to do with the directions Texas and Oklahoma choose to go. One of Freet's communications to Varady: "We have a full-time marketing and communication teams, while RFI does not. New Carolina Hurricanes owner Dundon says he's already talked to NHL Commish Bettman about the possibility of hosting an outdoor contest at NC State's Carter-Finley Stadium, indicates it's "not out of the question." The rebuild of Dudy Noble Stadium at Mississippi State is on schedule to be ready for 2018 season play as Phase B has been impacted by cold temperatures, but all signs still point to the facility being in shape to host a first pitch on March 6th. Phase C will continue during the season & Phase D will kick into high gear to finish the project after the '18 campaign. Bulldogs HC Cannizaro: "I really think the new Dudy Noble Field is going to be nicer than half of the older big league ballparks." (link)
