D1.jobs: New opportunity below at Stanford. Post your openings here.
Ohio State: Buckeyes AD Smith might be on vacation, but he's still plenty accessible for the investigative team looking into the situation surrounding FB HC Meyer. The Columbus Dispatch's Rabinowitz notes how Smith is in the spotlight, gets comment from Indiana professor & sports law expert Grow on Smith's contract, "There are definitely several provisions in here that could trip him up. The big question is: What did he do with that information once he became aware of it? [...] If I’m his defense attorney, I’m saying, ‘Well, if the police decided they’re not pressing charges, then they are the ones who determine whether the law has been violated.' And if the police don’t think it’s been violated, then he hasn’t messed up there. There was no legal violation so there’s nothing to report." (link, link); The mothers for both former FB AC Zach Smith & claimant Courtney Smith question Courtney's claims, says she mentioned multiple times taking down her then-husband & others connected to the OSU program. (link); Zach Smith has yet to be contacted by the independent investigative unit, per his counsel. (link); Notable Ohio State blog Eleven Warriors on how the FB staff is pushing forward in preparation for the upcoming season. (link); The Ringer's Titus, who is also a former OSU MBB student-athlete, "Once an independent investigation delivers its results later this month, the university will face a choice about whether to fire its head football coach. The decision will speak volumes—about both college sports and the school’s priorities at large." More. (link)
Hoops Changes: NCAA VP for MBB Gavitt clarifies communication with the NBA & USA Basketball, "We've been communicating very, very, very regularly -- and effectively -- with them. We could've done a little better job of communicating [Wednesday's] news with them. I'll just leave it at that." Gavitt continues by noting the importance of having the entities involved & their commitment to the youth game. (link); Saint Joseph's Martelli: "To me, it's changing from the 35-second shot clock to the 30-second clock. There's still a game, still recruiting, still NCAA bylaws to follow. [...] One man's opinion, they stopped short. They did not incorporate open gyms. They weren't ready to approve that yet." (link); Kentucky's Calipari: "Until the NBA changes, there’s nothing here. I don’t even know why we’re discussing it. It can’t happen until ’22 (when the NCAA has said it could amend its age limit) right now. Any of the things they’re talking about can’t change. […] There were some things out there that were not accurate. USA Basketball, their CEO Jim Tooley is here, and they don’t want to be the only one who decides who gets an agent. That’s not what they do. The only one to do camps? They said well, hell, why would that be shifted to them? So there’s a lot of stuff they’ve got to talk through. The thing where they stay in the draft -- the NBA has to agree to that too, now. To go back to the school. And what if the school doesn’t have a scholarship. What happens? Does he go back and transfer? Does he have to sit out then? There’s things that have to be talked through, and thank God we have three years to do it." (link); Yahoo's Eisenberg starts a thread with, "Maybe someone has an idea of how the NCAA's overhauled recruiting calendar will impact high school basketball next June, but definitely not the coaches and state federation officials I've exchanged texts and emails with today. They're in the dark." (link); USA Today's Wolken's headline, "The NCAA is great at big headlines, but the reality of college hoops reform is harder." (link); The Athletic's O'Neil, "NCAA’s swift action is a sign it knows it must change and a step (albeit small) in the right direction." (link); Former Compliance staffer Infante digs into the weeds for The Athletic, "For a long time, it looked like the NCAA was going to muddle along by rearranging the deck chairs on the normal enforcement process and dispensing with it in favor of an ad-hoc one when the situation called for it. The NCAA didn’t create a perfect system, but it did create an enforcement program that looks much more informed by the real world." (link)
ECU Chancellor Staton has asked the UNC Board of Governors to hire a third party to conduct a financial audit of the Pirates financial standing. Staton points to a $3M deficit that some have linked to the transition to the AAC. Staton: "A lot of it has to do with athletics and two 3-9 football seasons in particular. It’s very frustrating for me to be in a situation where I have to defend those kinds of things. [...] We’re trying to do Division I athletics at a very high level. Dave Hart summed it up as succinctly as anyone has: 'Our expectations for success are not matched by our financial resources.' There it is in a nutshell. So, we’ve got to raise more and we’ve got to invest more. We’ve got to win because, as you know, that is certainly a part of revenue generation as a part of athletics. We’ve got a lot of things we have to do, but at the end of the day, all of this could really have been plotted out, and should have been seen in some cases, once the decision was made to leave Conference USA and join the American Athletic Conference." More as Staton also says Hart knows the challenges best. Could that be a precursor to who becomes the next ECU AD? (link)
Wake Forest MBB AC Jones arrested in connection to punching a Florida man who was visiting New York City & later passed away in the hospital. From the New York Post: "The medical examiner hasn’t revealed whether Jones’ punch led to Szabo’s death." Wake says it's aware of the situation & is gathering information. (link)
Colorado State Prez Frank wants to use excess revenue from the Rams' new on-campus FB stadium to cover a $1.125M deficit for athletics that AD Parker says is a result of "unexpected expenses incurred to pay coaches in the men’s basketball and football programs." Basically, it's $250K of the remaining $750K buyout of former MBB HC Eustachy, $425K to hire new MBB HC Medved from Drake, $150K raise for FB HC Bobo & the impact of five new FB ACs. Frank needs approval from the board, otherwise the excess goes into a reserve account. Second link here is a bunch more details on CSU's FY18 results, which included an increase in self-generated revenues from $15.7M in 16-17 to $24M in the most recent fiscal year. (link, link)
Interesting times for Idaho as the Vandals head back to the Big Sky for FB, but do so at the moment without clarity on the future of on leave AD Spear, an outgoing Prez & a massive hoops facility project on the horizon. Exiting Prez Staben says FB season ticket sales are up, as are athletics donations, "We’re on a really good trajectory at this university. How do we keep our forward momentum going? I am the president. It’s up to me to leave this university in the best position possible. I’m going to work hard to do that. Hopefully everybody at the university feels the same way." The next chance to learn more about Spear's standing could come on the 15th of this month. Spokane Sports Commission boss Sawyer wants his market to become a bigger player within the Big Sky, believes Idaho & Eastern Washington can become major rivals on the gridiron. More. (link)
Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner indicates the Pac-12 reached a settlement with Entertainment Management Group, the firm who reportedly helped strike a deal between the league & AT&T in 2012-13. Back in mid-April plaintiff attorneys asked to dismiss the case. In its original filing, EMG was pushing for 8% commission on the deal that could be worth up to $90M over five years. Wilner: "Even a settlement in the mid-seven figures (approximately one percent of annual revenue) would be favorable to a trial that could result in the curtain being pulled back on business affairs that it assuredly does not want made public." (link)
Inside Higher Ed's Seltzer follows-up on the fundraising drama at Vanderbilt reported last week by The Tennessean. VU's Director of Issues Management Lewis on the relocation of the National Commodore Club as a byproduct of structural reporting changes, "Any suggestion to the contrary is false. Vanderbilt remains committed to the success of its athletics program and its student athletes. The university is focused on providing student athletes with an elite education, the opportunity to participate in a top-notch conference, and the mentoring and support for success on and off the field. That is the university’s top priority in line with its academic and research mission." However, Duke professor Clotfelter, who has written quite a bit on the interworkings of college athletics comments, "They’re doing something different. I’d sit up and pay attention, because this really and truly looks like something about a university’s priorities." (link)

UTRGV in the headlines as its FB feasibility study finally hits the light. Vaqueros AD King also penned for AthleticDirectorU on his approach to leadership & staff development, "One of our guiding principles is to win the workplace in order to win the marketplace. You win by cultivating the right culture, leadership, expectations, beliefs, mindset, relationships and habits before you ever show up to work. Culture comes to life from the top down, but can only be achieved by empowering, challenging and developing one’s staff. As Jack Welch once said, 'Before you become a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you assume a leadership role, success is all about growing others.' There is perhaps no single aspect of my job in which I take greater pride. […] We would be naive to think that, as the school with the second lowest budget in our conference, we should do things exactly as everyone else. In fact, we must work harder, plan and execute better, and think more audaciously than our peers. Long-term success is for leaders who communicate, collaborate and connect intentionally; not leaders for whom people have to work, but leaders for whom people want to work." More. (link)
UTRVG Deputy AD/COO Volpe chats with 1.Question, echoes some of King's thoughts on the creation of the department's strategic plan, "It was critically important that we as the executive staff were included in the strategic planning process; it created buy-in. And since we have buy-in, it helps with the implementation. […] Since we had say so in the words and thoughts included in the strategic plan, when we hold each other and the units we oversee accountable, we are actually speaking the words that we wrote. […] What inclusive leadership has done for us is create ownership, which leads to accountability." Fifteen-minute listen. (link)
Boston College AD Jarmond recruits Texas Asst. AD for Leadership Giving Ellison Stewart to The Heights as his new Senior Assoc. AD/Director of Development for Athletics. Jarmond points to Ellison Stewart's "distinguished fundraising background at both Texas and Michigan." BC VP for Development McDermott: "Her energy will be a great addition to our Advancement efforts, and the insights she's gained from having worked in some of the country's leading Athletics programs will be invaluable. I'm very much looking forward to working with Wesley as she and her team build on recent fundraising momentum for Athletics and work with our alumni, parents, and friends to garner even greater levels of support for BC's student-athletes." (link)
Former Penn State Gymnastics HC Thompson has filed a suit against PSU on the grounds of defamation, false light & breach of contract after he was dismissed back in February of 2017 on reports of creating a hostile program environment. Thompson is seeking $100K, plus the balance of his $128K annual salary that was due to run through June of this year. Of note in the filing, "The statements as published by Penn State were made with actual malice and/or with disregard for the truth and made no effort to preserve or protect the reputation of Coach Thompson." (link)
'Director of Player Personnel' used to just be a role & title seen in the NFL, but recently it's taken hold in college FB & 247's Wiltfong takes a look alongside the inaugural Personnel Symposium that went down in Nashville this week. Long hours of cutting up tape, prepping film & obsessing over the details look to be prerequisites for the gig. Georgia's Malchow: "It’s taken a long time for people to realize the impact it can have on a program. Examples places like Florida and Alabama set, it allowed us to build this profession." 180 participants from 60 different schools attended the event. (link)
More Personnel: Morgan State AD Scott named to the FCS AD Association Executive Committee. (link); Louisiana Tech welcomes Pacific Assoc. AD for Development Lynn to the same role in Ruston. (link); Kansas State extends FB HC Snyder through the 2022 season. $3.45M this season, with $300K bumps each of the next two seasons, $3M buyout, $580K in max annual bonus, $50K in annual business expenses, no automatic rollover and KSU will pay for an annual physical exam at any medical facility of Snyder's choosing. (link, link); Kansas FB HC Beaty excited to have newly hired Sr. Assoc. AD for Football Administration Vollmar on board, said he wanted to hire him as a consultant a few years back, expects him to help "remove the roadblocks" facing the program. (link); Texas A&M Women's Soccer HC Guerrieri gets a three-year extension. (link); Retiring William & Mary FB HC Laycock offers advice to his yet-to-be-named successor: "The first thing they’ll have to understand is you can’t take a template from some place and plop it down here. You’ve got to understand the fit (and) the type of players. And once you get the players, you’ve got to understand the demands on them so far as the academic part." (link); La Salle AD Bradshaw selects Southern California's Huntington Beach club coach Hyham as the next Water Polo HC for the Men's and Women's programs. (link); Minnesota has hired Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates for $200K to help find a successor for outgoing Prez Kaler. (link); Louisville Prez Bendapudi lauded for her first few months on the job, including a recent leadership retreat where she brought together academic deans and AD Tyra, among other university leaders. (link)
Who doesn't like a good book club? Troy FB HC Brown implemented his version back in 2015 & it includes everyone in the Trojans department who touches the program, not just the FB staff. Brown: "It’s a way to engage our whole group and help them grow but also create an alignment which is critical. So, we reinforce what our culture is, and we create buy-in across our entire staff, not just among our position coaches and GAs. It was also really about getting that whole group together." John Gordon's The Energy Bus, Legacy by James Kerr & Lencioni's The Five Dysfunctions of a Team have all been on the list. Brown divvies out chapters to different groups & presentations have ranged from PowerPoints to acting sessions. Lots more. (link)

Yahoo's Thamel continues his preseason look at FB coaches around the nation, surveyed 15 ADs on the future of Florida Atlantic HC Kiffin. 11 said they wouldn't hire Kiffin, two said "yes" & two were undecided. One response, "Can he get a job? Sure. He’s a world-class play caller, knows the game and can recruit. Do I think we’re at a moment in time with off-field issues and the FBI probe that people are less apt to take that risk? Yes." Another view, "I do think he’s rehabilitated his image, so to speak, and is an attractive candidate should he have a great year this year and keep his nose clean." Thamel also ranks 'Group of 5' HCs "on the rise." Top 5: Memphis' Norvell, Toledo's Candle, Boise's Harsin, Kiffin & Troy HC Brown. (link); Thamel also goes in top ACs who are ready for an HC opportunity. Top 5: Clemson co-OC Elliott, Ohio State OC Day, Wisconsin DC Leonhard, Ohio State DC Schiano & Miami (FL) DC Diaz. (link)
Facilities: Texas gets the go ahead from the Board of Regents for its $175M expansion to Royal-Memorial. New Mexico Attorney General Balderas points to the court system to resolve the open meetings violations he says the University of New Mexico committed if push comes to shove. Balderas: "I’m calling on the University of New Mexico to increase transparency and accountability, but most importantly to reconsider their entire evaluation process … and methodology as well as redo their meeting agenda and action that they wish to take. This means that they must not only provide the accurate information, but I want them to improve their process of evaluation and their process by which they involve the community members and the student population that they’re impacting." No official comment from UNM yet. (link); Season FB tickets for the Lobos are down by roughly 1,200 year-over-year at the moment. (link)
LSU FB HC Orgeron just learned that Tigers student-athlete Taylor was involved in a January 8th burglary back in his hometown of Cumming, Georgia & has suspended Taylor indefinitely until the situation is reviewed. The lag time for Orgeron is an example of a challenge every athletic department faces in vetting prospective & even current student-athletes at times. NOLA.com's Higgins: "For anyone who insists a college coach should know a player's complete background before signing him, it's an impossible task short of a professional security check which schools (even the ones with huge athletic budgets) say they can't afford. All a college coach can do is question everyone who has an almost-daily relationship with prospective signees. There's hope that high school coaches will always provide honest assessments touting their seniors, but it isn't always the case." (link)
A new court filing in the Baylor saga alleges the university knew about a "serial sexual assault assailant" in 2011, but did nothing about the situation only to see the individual in question (former FB student-athlete Elliott) rape another BU student in 2012. Plaintiff attorney Dunnam indicates he's ready to subpoena 30-50 more people next week "including administrators and regents, and believes additional unreleased documents with more evidence supporting his claims will be revealed." The university calls the allegations of suppressing the documents related to Elliott "false and completely absurd." (link)
