Former Penn MBB HC and current Boston Celtics AC Allen has reportedly been identified as "Coach 2" in an indictment that alleges Allen took bribes from Florida-based businessman Esformes to help the latter's son gain admission to Penn. While not charged with a crime, Allen is accused of accepting over $74K in cash and benefits from Esformes, who was initially charged two years ago with crimes ranging from health care fraud to money laundering. An attorney for Esformes argues the charges mischaracterize the relationship between Esformes and Allen, saying Esformes hired Allen when Esformes' son was a sophomore in high school to help improve his game, "as many parents do when their kids show athletic promise." Esformes' son did enroll at Penn, and the attorney notes that he has maintained a 3.57 GPA and was recently named to the dean's list, though he has not played for the Quakers. Neither Penn nor the Celtics have commented on the indictment. (link)
More than 100 former Ohio State students have now accused former physician Strauss of sexual misconduct, according to OSU, whose independent investigators have reached out to 115,000 alumni and plan to contact 147,000 more. Prez Drake: "We are grateful to those who have come forward and remain deeply concerned for anyone who may have been affected by Dr. Strauss’ actions. We remain steadfastly committed to uncovering the truth." Student-athletes from 14 varsity sports have come forward with allegations. (link)
Former Baylor and current Liberty AD McCaw's deposition concerning a Title IX lawsuit against Baylor has been released, and in the 400-page document, McCaw asserts that former BU Board of Regents Chair Willis instructed him to circumvent the Title IX coordinator and conduct his own inquiry into a report of sexual assault. In addition, McCaw charges former BU Police Chief Doak with reprimanding officers who looked into sexual assaults "because Baylor did not want them showing up in their records and did not want information that would discourage families from sending their children to the university." Board Chair Allison has called McCaw's assertions "allegations," adding: "And while they're serious allegations, I haven't seen the facts behind it." Full deposition. (link); Baylor's official response states that "despite the numerous, factually baseless assertions in Mr. McCaw's deposition, one fact remains -- that several incidents of sexual and interpersonal violence involving student-athletes were reported during his tenure as athletics director. It was the Baylor Board of Regents that stepped up and took action." The response goes on to express confidence in the changes to the campus culture, including those in leadership, pursuant to recommendations in the Pepper Hamilton report. Full response. (link)
During an appearance on MSU Today, freshly minted Michigan State AD Beekman says FB and MBB, "our two marquee, revenue-producing programs," are performing at high levels, while several of the other 23 programs are "on the cusp of greatness." He adds: "One of our priorities is to work closely with all of our Olympic sports and make sure that they have every opportunity to succeed as well." Beekman also identifies the facilities "arms race" and the future of TV revenue as two of the biggest challenges facing all of college athletics, especially as they're inextricably linked to one another. "When we build a building, much like if you buy a house, we bond it in a way that's analogous to a mortgage. We plan on making payments for upwards of 30 years. I think for the next five or 10 years, the model is fairly stable. But what will TV revenue be like 30 years from now when we're making that last payment?" Another area where the two challenges intersect is filling Spartan Stadium to its 70K capacity on FB gamedays. Even when MSU does sell out, Beekman observes that rivals such as Penn State, Ohio State and Michigan have 30K more seats in their respective stadiums, putting MSU at a $20-40M disadvantage annually. "Thinking about our revenue modeling and how we can be a little smarter, a little more efficient, use our money a little more wisely, and make sure we don't make mistakes - all of those are things that we're spending a lot of time on." More from Beekman. (link)
More from ACC Commish Swofford & the Daily Press' Teel from the past week's media junket. Swofford complimentary of how quickly Louisville made a move on the Papa John's controversy (Virginia Tech/IMG College will review its relationship with the pizza brand) & though he's not an overall fan of hiring ADs from outside college athletics, Cards boss Tyra gets high marks, "He’s excellent on his feet. He’s a superb communicator and, from everything I can tell, has been very well accepted internally at the university and in the athletic program. Great leaders are great leaders, and I think he’s had enough similar opportunities and experiences, coupled with his playing experience as a college athlete, to really connect it all and make it work in a collegiate athletic department. … Vince has come in at the conference level and re-established credibility very quickly." Swofford also mentions some credibility U of L has lost with the latest sagas & the importance of reestablishing the brand for themselves & the league. (link); Uno mas from Swofford, this one on the state of FB, "I love the game, always have, and want it to continue to be healthy as it generally has been. But I also want to see the game improved and made better and safer. I want it to continue to be a game that young kids want to play. The very nature of it is going to have some risks. … I don’t think you can eliminate all of the risks, but I think we should be eliminating every bit that we possibly can without undermining the soul of the game." (link)
As the NCAA looks into hosting its own youth basketball camps that former Secretary of State Rice thinks should help students develop basketball as well as "academic and life skills, health and collegiate eligibility," Washington Post reporters Stubbs and Hobson observe that shoe companies, as well as youth players themselves, may prove implacable. Former Cal and San Jose State staffer Borman, who now is now team director for the Nike-sponsored NY Renaissance, calls the NCAA's potential foray into youth basketball camps a "media stunt," adding: "It's a PR move by the NCAA. It's a joke." Joe Johnson Hawks coach Howard agrees, adding: "Unless the NCAA is going to pay for their travel and give these kids gear from Nike, Adidas and Under Armour, kids are still going to play in these leagues." Meanwhile, USA Basketball Chair Dempsey, who served on the Rice Commission, insists the NCAA does not want to take over grassroots basketball. "What we're looking for is a more inclusive environment in the summer, with the three big stakeholders - the NCAA, the NBA and USA Basketball - all having a bigger voice." Camp operator Trigonis sums up the prevailing sentiment among grassroots stakeholders, asserting that NCAA and its member schools "are taking millions from show companies; they let them into the college sports business; and now they want to corral them. Maybe they should just give the money back." (link)
Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner asks if conference commissioners & other officials should have a role in hiring HCs & FB staffers at member institutions, points to SEC boss Sankey squashing the idea of former Ole Miss boss Freeze joining another league staff this year. Arizona AD Heeke: "I think it’s worthy of robust conversation. Hiring an employee at the university level must be under the purview of the university, but I hope the conference office could be used as a source of information and consultation. It can play a role." Former Utah boss Hill: "We know who the coaches are that have the potential to cause you trouble. We can’t look at each other and say, wink-wink, 'He’s found the lord; he won’t cause us any problems.' We need to make sure the coaches are fully vetted." Wilner wonders if hiring a specialist at the league level, who would interface with ADs on HC hires & HCs on AC selections, would be beneficial, "Be proactive. Be creative. Because unless players get compensated for their services and skills, the corruption isn't going away." (link)
Auburn Prez Leath provides some perspective on his hire of Tigers AD Greene on an Auburn Undercover podcast, "We put everything on the table and said let's go out and find the the best person for Auburn at this time in our history. So, we got a group of people together - former athletes like Jason Dufner or Kim Evans a coach there put a group together at the start of this comprehensive search - but all along the way I kept hearing from people in the sports world who whispered in my ear, 'There's a relatively young lad up in Buffalo. Notre Dame guy that you really ought to take a look at.' Eventually he rose up through the ranks. And first time I met him. I thought this is an impressive individual, smart. He's engaging, he's destined to be a great." A bit more in the podcast. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Italian Serie A soccer club SSC Napoli has become the first club in the world to launch its own store on Amazon, allowing fans to purchase gear directly through the team website or through Amazon, which Morgan Stanley says will become the U.S. apparel industry's leader in 2018, having gained 1.5% of the market share over the past year. Forbes writer Ozanian notes that Napoli is likely just the start of such deals for Amazon. In April, the online giant purchased exclusive rights in the United Kingdom to the U.S. Open tennis tournament while also extending its Thursday Night Football deal with the NFL for $65M per year, a $15M annual increase over the previous deal. Globally, though, soccer seems to be Amazon's focus, with the company having purchased streaming rights to 20 English Premier League matches, starting in 2019, with a long eye toward Spain's La Liga. Ozanian: "Apparel or viewing content, it's all about getting customers to Amazon Prime. And it's working." (link)

Kentucky State (DII) has named Kansas Assoc. AD for Student Life Thomas as its next AD. KSU Prez Brown calls the hire "historic," noting that it appears to be the "first time that any of the nation's historically black colleges and universities has recruited an athletic director from one of the Power 5 conferences." SIAC Commish Moore hopes that Thomas' hiring will "move the needle with respect to gender inclusion. For her part, Thomas, who has held compliance and administrative positions at North Carolina Central, San Jose State, Howard and Saint Paul's College, says she is "humbled and honored" to serve as KSU's AD. "President Brown is the right president for me. He has a vision. He's intentional. He doesn't believe in excuses." (link)
Recommended rule changes for the 2019 Baseball season: The use of two 20-second play clocks to improve pace (starts when the pitcher steps on the dirt), allowing HCs two video challenges per game where technology allows, no more third-to-first pickoff moves, no more having to throw the four wide pitches needed for an intentional walk, no more than six defensive conferences on the mound per game, a few more. What can be challenged? Fair/foul, ground rule double/home run, catch/no catch, spectator interference, scoring plays that include a collision. In the last two innings: Force outs or tag plays at any base, hit by pitch, interference to break up a double play, couple other small items. NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel must approve, meets next on August 15. (link)
DI SAAC met a week ago on the new season of competition model with a specific focus on recruiting communications & official visits, the Transfer Working Group's progress & educational groups. SAAC Chair & former UMKC MBB student-athlete Knight: "What has come out of the Transfer Working Group has really benefited the student-athlete, which was our focus." The group points to thoroughly educating peers on the new transfer rules & gambling developments over the 2018-19 campaign. Next meeting set for October. (link)
The Athletic's Olson examines why Kansas' FB scholarship deficit makes it the most difficult coaching job in the 'Power 5.' Jayhawks HC Beaty, who inherited just 38 scholarship players when he took over in 2015, says in dealing with the lack of scholarships, his staff may be the most "creative staff in the history of the game," adding: "I've gotta laugh because if I don't, I'll cry." Olson attributes the deficit to former HC Weis, "his botched blueprint and a long list of complicating factors," including players leaving voluntarily, dismissals and a combined 27 junior college players who entered the program in 2012 and 2013. Simple math has kept the Jayhawks, who hope to dress 70 scholarship players this season, from rebuilding its roster. NCAA rules allow just 25 players to be added per recruiting class, and when you factor in attrition, Olson observes: "You need a lot more than 25 a year to begin closing the gap" from 38 to 85. One remedy to the problem has been the practice of blueshirting, whereby players pay for their housing and tuition in the summer and are put on scholarship on the first day of school; however, blueshirt players cannot take official campus visits prior to enrolling or their status as a recruited player will be triggered and they will count toward the 25. In addition, coaches cannot have in-person visits with the players, nor can the players sign LOIs. Obviously, this is a less than ideal way to build rebuild a program, but as AD Long puts it: "It's time to break the cycle. It's not gonna be easy." Lots more. (link)

Are you ready to be the boss? A survey from leadership advisory firm Egon Zehnder found that 68% of CEOs, in hindsight, were not fully prepared for their role, 50% said "driving culture change was more difficult than they'd anticipated," 48% struggled to find time for themselves and 47% found developing a senior leadership team more challenging than expected. EZ's co-leaders of the CEO Practice Najipoor-Schutte and Patton suggest ways organizations can address these "CEO development gaps" in this HBR piece: 1) Emphasize constant personal growth as the pathway to success; 2) Boards should be more proactive in management; and 3) Internal and external hires should be better integrated. Of note, "internally selected CEOs expressed more concerns than externally selected ones about their ability to adjust to the new role and build a group of supporters." (link)

Ole Miss was in front of the NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee this past Wednesday & Rebels AD Bjork says, "We were prepared. We left everything on the table, and that’s all we can do." Both Bjork & FB HC Luke expect a final decision sometime this Fall. Bjork also notes recent reporting of level 3 violations that included "a group of fans improperly contacting recruits through Twitter" described as "direct and deliberate" contact, does not believe those will have any bearing on the appeal. (link)
The Oregon State FB recruiting materials that ended up in the mailbox of a Hawaii student-athlete results in a secondary violation. Directly: "The NCAA's punishment bars Oregon State from recruiting the unnamed player in question should he elect to transfer." Beavers Assoc. AD for Communications Fenk: "We admit and understand that what we did was an unintentional violation. The punishment fits. We didn't try to do anything covert. It was an honest mistake that we took responsibility for." (link)
Miami (OH) lands a seven-figure gift to endow the Cross Country HC chair. Former Redhawks Cross Country student-athlete Cunningham & his wife made the gift. Cunningham, who is a retired Marine Corps Lt. Colonel, "Miami just kind of rescued me. After you get to a certain age, you realize there are certain institutions and organizations in your life that made you the way you are. Sometimes you are fortunate enough that you find them at pivotal moments in your life, and certainly Miami was a major one for me." Miami AD Sayler says endowing HC positions is "a significant priority for us moving forward." (link)
If some pro teams are worried about how much their players are Fortnite-ing, should you be about your student-athletes? Washington Capitals third-round draft pick Sutter: "There’s definitely some guys around the league, some even on my [junior] team, that are pretty bad for it. It takes away from their sleeping and keeps them up late. . . . It’s starting to become a pretty big issue." An NBA agent: "It’s not something the teams will come to you about. A coach or GM won’t say [anything], but trainers do. Teams with really young players complained all year about guys not sleeping. It used to be chalked up to them partying and all that, but now it’s because of them playing video games all night." A bit more. (link)
Trend to watch: Real-time t-shirt company BreakingT is making waves with its quick design turnaround meant to contextually capture the momentum of a defining moment and, of course, drive revenue. BreakingT was setup at the Major League Baseball Home Run Derby & All-Star Game earlier in the week & here's how company Prez Mottram explained his firm's value proposition, "Something big is probably going to happen. We’re going to have our designer working on one of these tables. So let’s say Bryce Harper hits one off the scoreboard; we could start designing that right away and potentially have it for sale before the Home Run Derby is over. We would have the design mocked up on the shirt, we could take online orders at the booth, and you’d get it two days from now." Mottram says he & his leadership team are learning a ton about real-time t-shirt sales in a partnership with the Washington Nationals, hopes to expand to other teams. Surely this is coming to college athletics. Very cool. (link)
