Whether it's Kyle Brennan or someone else, The Salt Lake Tribune's Falk writes on the challenges ahead for a new AD at Utah. 1) Another Rice-Eccles Stadium expansion & other capital projects, the former of which outgoing boss Hill calls "the biggest, the most important project and the most expensive project we’re going to do in the next 20 years." 2) The Pac-12 Networks & overall TV deals (Hill: "That has got to be solved. As a league, we’re starting to slip behind in finances. … Unfortunately, from my standpoint, I don’t see it changing much until the contract is up.") 3) Head injuries in FB. 4) Additional compensation for student-athletes (Hill: "From my standpoint, the colleges have to get together with the different pro leagues and make a viable minor league, where kids who don’t want to be in college can play and get paid.") 5) Can Utah be elite? (Hill: "It's a big challenge. I'm hoping there won't be complacency in the university.") 6) Prepare for high-profile HC changes. 7) The future of the BYU rivalry. (link)
New Mexico Prez Stokes, who has been on the job for all of six-plus weeks so far, comments further on the athletic department's fiscal issues, "Realizing just how important it was to deal with this, I stepped in and have done quite a few things in working with the athletic director. I don’t see this athletics issue as defining my presidency. What I see is the opportunity to demonstrate what I hope is the definition of my presidency, which is about process, that process matters, that transparency matters, that we do things with integrity and we demonstrate that." Also of note from Albuquerque is the coming exit of university EVP/CFO/COO Harris, who had a big hand in athletics, as Stokes is looking at potentially splitting the role apart & hiring more than one leader to assume Harris' hefty portfolio. (link)
Tennessee AD Fulmer during yesterday's FB spring game, "This family atmosphere is very important to our people. I know these people. This job has not been hard because — it’s challenging, certainly — I know where bones are buried. I know the good guys, the bad guys. All those kinds of things." Interestingly, Fulmer also says the Vols department had been "wondering in the desert" in the recent past, plus on his enjoyment of the AD chair, "It’s been a lot of fun, to be honest with you." (link)
No one seems to quite know the future of notable former AD Hart in his role as Special Athletic Adviser to the Chancellor back at ECU, but university Chancellor Staton lauded Hart's leadership at Friday's Board of Trustees meeting. Staton on Hart, "Dave has been tasked with providing strategic and operational guidance... and I believe his extraordinary experience combined with his knowledge of ECU will be uniquely helpful in the search for the best leadership of our programs in the coming years." The search Staton was referring to is the hire of new MBB HC Dooley, to which Hart notes, "I told him it would be a privilege to return to a place that is extraordinarily special. You have every reason to be excited about this top-shelf coach. If you knew what the top basketball coaches in the nation have to say about Coach Dooley, you would be even more excited." (link)
UCF unveiled a '2017 National Champions' addition to Spectrum Stadium during yesterday's spring game, plus Knights student-athletes were awarded some shiny rings for their accomplishments last season that also note the natty. UCF AD White: "We wanted to take a broad brush on what’s the best way to honor our past and hopefully build for the future. We’re going to win our fair share of championships here moving forward." (link - article, link - video of unveiling)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
For those of you tired of waiting in long security lines at major airports, there's an interesting experiment going on in Everett, Washington as a private company is developing a terminal to service short-leg & regional trips to help customers avoid the busy SeaTac International. Alaska, Southwest & United have already agreed to fly in & out of Paine Field in Everett & if the strategy goes to plan, we could see more privatization of airports that could offer a better customer experience for travelers. Privatization of airports in Europe is already standard fare (no pun intended) & the Airports Council International "estimates U.S. airports will need to implement $100 billion of infrastructure works by 2021 to accommodate passenger and cargo volume growth." (link)

Old Dominion has reportedly asked state government to allow for a $10M increase in construction costs to the $55M upgrade to Foreman Field. No student fees would factor into the additional monies with $15M in private fundraising added to $50M in financing to cover the $65M price tag. So far there's no indication from the state senate or house that the measure won't be approved. ODU SVP for Finance & Administration DuBois: "Over the past several years as the economy has picked up, the construction industry has gotten very tight. As a result, costs have been escalating significantly each year." (link)
Remember the game operations security review the SEC asked South Carolina to undertake as a byproduct of the issues between its WBB leadership & those in the Missouri camp? Gamecocks AD Tanner: "We’ve been having conversations with the SEC office. They have set a date to come to campus in early May, and they’ve asked us for some information on our basketball game protocol that we’re providing. So a date has been set and the review is going to be done in early May." Also, still no word on mediation of the defamation lawsuit between USC WBB HC Staley & Tigers AD Sterk. (link)
Maybe I missed the original announcement (unlikely, but possible), as it looks like Learfield has setup shop at Evansville with a new Purple Aces Sports Properties that begins with the announcement of a multi-station radio network. Per the Courier & Press, the relationship includes "everything from concessions and ticket sales to branding, licensing and trademark consulting, digital and social platform expertise, campus-wide business and sponsorship development." (link)
What's in the water at Austin Peay? Both FB & MBB followed similar trajectories during their recent campaigns from lowly pre-season expectations by peers to Coach of the Year awards to bright futures. The Leaf-Chronicle's Pouncy takes a comparative look at the two programs, noting the major role freshmen student-athletes played in competitive success & both finishing in the Top 3 of OVC standings after FB was voted to finish nine out of nine & MBB 11 out of 12 in the pre-season polls. More Personnel: La Salle AD Bradshaw hires Quinnipiac AHC MacGillivray as the new WBB HC for the Explorers. (link); Alaska Anchorage Interim AD McDiffett turns to former Bentley AC Curley as his new Men's Hockey HC. Curley was most recently the HC for EC Salzburg II, a junior squad in Austria. (link); UTRGV AD King will make a new WBB HC hire as Vaqueros boss Tidwell exits for the Chief of Staff role on the new Texas Tech staff. (link); One college baseball outlet reports longtime & highly-successful Rice HC Graham will step down at the end of the year. D1Baseball's Rogers tweets, "Spent about 45 minutes after today’s game talking to @RiceBaseball coach Wayne Graham. I’ll have a column on the Owls and his situation in the next few days. Obviously, Coach Graham is well aware of the situation surrounding his job security." (link, link)
Boston U. generated a strong $1.29M on Giving Day a week ago. The haul easily tops the previous department record of $1.02M from 2017. Terriers AD Marrochello: "The continued support that Terrier Nation demonstrates regularly, and particularly on Giving Day each year, is nothing short of inspirational and humbling. [...] To not only reach the $1 million mark again but exceed it by over 25 percent demonstrates the collective commitment of the Athletics community to continually enhance the first-class experience we offer our student-athletes." (link)
Arkansas Online continues its push to, well I'm not quite sure what the paper is trying to achieve, but there's further notes on coordination between Arkansas athletics & the Razorback Foundation that includes the cross-interviewing of job candidates & the general operation of the two entities. There's additional email threads between leadership on both sides on a variety of issues that frankly seem pretty run of the mill. Ultimately, it's the Razorback Foundation's ability to block open records requests as a private firm that has the paper all twisted up. (link)
Illinois Baseball sits in the top tier of the Big Ten's standings at 24-10 (9-3) as the Illini fight for another post-season berth just a few short years after its stellar 50-10 (21-1) campaign in 2015, a year in which UI hosted an NCAA Regional. However, HC Hartleb says he's still not sure when upgrades to his facilities will take place to help his program keep pace, "I don't know where we are in the process. For long-term success and to be able to continue to elevate the program and play at the national level on a regular basis, it's something I feel like we need to get accomplished somehow. I don't know how that takes place or what it's going to take. There's a number of things we've discussed, but as far as anything finalized or on the table — if there's anything — I don't know right now." Senior Assoc. AD for Capital Projects & Facilities Stillwell: "They put together a lot of good ideas and things we're considering. Those ideas are still active, and we're looking at possibilities for things to advance baseball and certainly keep them up with our other facilities." More. (link)
Social n Sport blogger & New York Yankees Senior Manager of Digital & Social Strategy Smith points to execution by the Philadelphia 76ers as a prime example of how to handle a playoff push. Smith: "On social, the campaign has come to life seamlessly. The launch was led with a strong hype video, and from there, the design elements and messaging have been carried throughout (even with sponsored content). All of the design work great example of what it looks like to refresh and elevate your messaging + graphics package when you’re on the big stage. And, how to keep it consistent yet fresh during a campaign." (link); Georgia FB's Twitter account was suspended yesterday morning & remains so as of 8:20a EST. (link)
Also Noticed: Memphis MBB student-athlete Sameh Azab has been diagnosed with leukemia lymphoma. Prayers to the Tigers' junior. (link); An interesting post-game comment from new Tennessee FB HC Pruitt after yesterday's spring game, "Our fans today were like our football team. Some were here and doing great, some weren’t here for legitimate reasons, and some should have been here and weren’t. That sounds just like our team." (link); Check out new digital FB yard markers that were used at Nebraska's spring game. (link)
