College Football Playoff Executive Director Hancock on potential expansion, "I don't see it. The four-team format is extremely popular. […] People didn't like the BCS. People really like the College Football Playoff. It's way different." Formula for G5 access? "Play a good schedule, win your games, and you'll be in the discussion. Look at Houston, two, three years ago. They had it all tee'd up and stumbled ... but they found the formula. Look at what Boise State did back in the day. There's a way." Conference USA Commish MacLeod: "I need to have a lot more discussions to get to a different number. If I said six or eight, what are the parameters? Is there a guarantee that one of our teams is in? Or does that just give it a better shot? It's hard to even answer the question without a lot more extended conversation and analyzing all of the data points we have." (link)
USC AD Swann reportedly denied permission to the New York Jets & Arizona Cardinals to talk with new Trojans FB OC & former Texas Tech HC Kingsbury about the pair's open HC gigs. Pro Football Talk says Kingsbury is thinking about resigning in order to have the conversations & would have to pay "a very low buyout." Specifically, "Kingsbury [...] may simply pay the buyout, walk away, and see what happens with any NFL head-coaching or offensive coordinator opportunities." (link)
USA Today's Schroeder writes on the Pac-12's positioning, believes more elite-level FB winning, a "solution pretty simple and yet at the same time, very difficult" can cure all. Schroeder runs through the narrative surrounding the conference of late, closes with, "As college football gets set to crown its national champion on Monday night, conversation about the Pac-12 isn’t just negative. It’s almost nonexistent." (link)
A top-five matchup between Clarkson and Northeastern ended in a 3-3 tie in the opening game of the Friendship Series in Belfast. It was the first NCAA Women's Hockey game played outside of North America. (link); UNLV's hockey team has aspirations to jump to the DI ranks, but finances are the biggest hurdle. AD Reed-Francois: "I’m a hockey fan and completely caught Golden Knights fever this past year. My son and I have attended several UNLV club hockey games, and having worked with our program, I know what an exemplary job they are doing. However, in the next few years, our focus has to be on providing resources for our current programs first so they consistently compete for conference championships." Newly hired West Virginia FB HC Brown went to centercourt of Troy's MBB game yesterday to address the crowd and thank them for their support of his FB program the past four years. "From my family and I, I thank you, thank you so much, God bless and Go Troy." Classy move. (link); Brown's new deal at WVU is for six years, $19.05M. (link)
An "understanding" has been reached between Youngstown State and FB HC Pelini and "both sides expect the relationship to continue" according to AD Strollo. Pelini's current four-year contract expires next month and Strollo indicates the new deal will be finalized in February. The Penguins went 4-7 this season. Pelini is 27-22 overall at YSU. (link)
Florida State Interim AD Coburn defends the hiring of former Baylor/FAU/Houston AC Briles, "Kendal’s experience and background have been thoroughly vetted by the university, including substantive discussions with administrators at Baylor, FAU and Houston. Not only did those results reveal him to be a strong candidate, but he received outstanding personal and professional recommendations from each university. We share Coach Taggart’s belief that he will be an outstanding addition to his coaching staff." Taggart has declined interview requests on the decision, but here is his clip from the news release on the hire: "I’m excited about the addition of Kendal to our staff. He brings play-calling experience and familiarity with the type of scheme and tempo we will run, which is similar to the offenses he has coordinated. His ability to recruit, manage an offensive staff, develop quarterbacks and make in-game adjustments will be beneficial to us as we evolve in our offense." (link)
If you haven't cut the cord yet, will this force your hand? How about fans? Reports indicate that Comcast, Dish and AT&T/DirecTV plan to raise rates again this year to account for lost subscribers. In Q3 last year, the "TV industry saw its largest ever rate of decline, with subscribers shrinking by 3.7 percent." Comcast prices will jump anywhere from $1-2 per month for specific channels, while DirecTV will hike regional sports networks by $1.00-1.90 and video packages up to $8. Dish's video packages could rise $3-5. "A Comcast spokeswoman said the changes were necessary because of rising broadcast television and sports programming costs, 'which are the largest drivers of price increases.'" (link)
St. John's is pushing for more MBB games to be played at Madison Square Garden as part of new AD Cragg's push to "raise his school's profile." Specifically, Cragg wants two significant non-conference games and all Big East home contests at the storied venue. Cragg on his discussions with MSG Marquee Events EVP Fisher: "We both want a good partnership, that’s the response [we’ve gotten from them]. That’s our goal and that’s been our goal from the beginning. Joel and I know what a good partnership looks like. We’ve had a lot of discussions. We’re still in talks about what it could look like. We’re going to keep pursuing that and come up with some sort of an agreement." (link)
To play MBB games at the 9,700-seat, city-owned Municipal Auditorium cost UMKC $250K annually. That pricepoint, along with a better fan-to-seat ratio, are some of the reasons the 'Roos prefer playing their games at the on-campus Swinney Recreation Center. With just 1,500 permanent seats, sophomore student-athlete McKissic notes that yesterday's game against Chicago State "felt like a more packed-in vibe" with the 894 fans in the stands. All WAC home games will be played at Swinney this season, where new signage and branding, a Courtside Club and valet parking is available. (link)
Also Noticed: Condolences to the Cal family as redshirt sophomore FB student-athlete Turner has passed away. Turner was hospitalized on December 30 after a "medical emergency" near his home in Southern California. (link); Iowa State paid Drake $300K for the Dec. 1 FB game in Ames. (link); During the month of January, American will offer two free tickets to home athletic events for federal government workers. (link); The NFL and Amazon have partnered to "debut a standalone voice-enabled app" through Alexa. "A Rookie's Guide to the NFL" is intended to "educate fans and guide them through the entire 2019 NFL Playoffs until a Super Bowl champion is crowned." (link); 30-second ad spots for Super Bowl LII on CBS are selling for $5M+. No 60-second ads have been sold. (link)
"How to stop wasting your life watching TV and do something worthwhile with your downtime." Author and time management coach Saunders dives into this answer for Fast Company. 1) Quit something (i.e. Facebook, a recurring meeting, a committee, etc); 2) Limit something (i.e., check email 3x day instead of whenever you hear the notification sound); 3) Pause something ("stopping for a moment to assert your ability to do the non-urgent reduces the sense that everything has to happen at a frenetic pace." 4) Delegate something (this saves at least 4-5 hours per week); and, 5) Add something (start putting the activity "you never have time for" first in your schedule). (link)
