In a move that no one in the media expected, Utah hired USF AD Harlan to take over in Salt Lake City. Utah Prez Watkins: "Mark has a breadth of experience in athletics and in fundraising, an open and collaborative leadership style and a track record of success that will enable him to lead our athletics department to greater heights." Harlan: "President Watkins has a clear vision for the University of Utah and recognizes that athletics can play a role in the university’s upward trajectory. I am grateful to her for the tremendous opportunity and her confidence in me and I cannot wait to get started." Harlan heads back west after recently signing a contract extension with the Bulls that paid him $525K annually. Ventura Partners assisted with the search for the Utes. (link, link, link)
Harlan's announced hire came on the same day Utah said goodbye to 31-year boss Hill, who rode a Utes-branded bus away from the Huntsman Center (hopefully straight to the beach). Simple words from Hill, "Thank you. Love you guys." Good photo series here. (link)
A $36.5M distribution, on average, for each Big 12 member as the league hit an all-time high of $364.87M in revenue. Projected to be the third-most among 'Power 5' programs, though Commish Bowlsby says he's not counting. After adding in third tier rights deals, each department should be above $40M. West Virginia Prez & Big 12 board chair Gee: "I wouldn't call it vindication. I think it shows as a league we made some very wise decisions. The most important thing I want to emphasize as a university president is the fact that other presidents feel equally strongly as I do about the success of the conference and where we are now. I think several years ago there was speculation that some of us were not as happy as others. I think we have a very happy group of presidents. And I think we have a very happy group of coaches and we're very competitive." Twenty-five percent of Baylor's payout will continue to be held in escrow (~$9M). (link, link, link)
SEC Meetings:
+ Graduate transfers will now be able to move about within the league, which Sports Illustrated's Staples says will benefit Alabama FB, even though HC Saban was against the rule. Outgoing Ole Miss FB student-athlete Jefferson will still have to obtain a hardship waiver from the league to attend & play at Florida next season as there was no change on free undergraduate movement, even when the previous program is facing a post-season ban. (link)
+ This one is pretty simple: "High school recruits with past incidents of serious misconduct are now barred from the SEC." (link)
+ No decision on loosening restrictions around public alcohol sales at games as SI's Dellenger says Kentucky & Georgia are most against such a change with LSU being at the other end as a proponent. (link)
+ Georgia Prez Morehead elected to the league's Executive Committee. (link)
Arizona AD Heeke: "The future is very, very bright for Arizona athletics. I think all of our programs are poised to do great things going forward. I am really bullish about Arizona athletics and I think we are in a good position." Part of Heeke's comments to the media about the state of his portfolio. Heeke also says FB renovations will be ready for kick-off against BYU, as well as, "The (football) practice will be done late in the fall, November-ish, so we are excited about that." (link); Arizona continues to overhaul its Title IX policies & staff, which will include the hire of a new Title IX coordinator, two new victim support positions, another role that will help students navigate the process, installing deputy coordinators "at appropriate locations" around campuses & a slew of new protocol changes. More info on the new on-campus FB stadium for South Alabama as Prez Waldrop calls it, "A win for the whole community." Waldrop points to $15M to $20M worth of public funding for the venue that's projected to run $72M. City of Mobile Communications Director Talbot adds, "Negotiations between the City and USA are ongoing and we are optimistic that they will be successful. The project represents a generational opportunity for the City and USA, creating a world-class amenity to be enjoyed by students and citizens alike." (link); Meanwhile, Vanderbilt leaders continue to discuss how to spruce up the Commodores FB digs. AD Williams: "I don’t think you would see us ever tearing the stadium down and building from new. So if the (reality) is that we will remain in that stadium, (the question) will be: How do you renovate that stadium? [...] At some point in time, it will be unavoidable that we’ll have to make a decision long-term, and I would say that decision is probably two to three years away." (link)
Yahoo's trio of Forde, Thamel & Wetzel shed a bit of light on the latest MBB-FBI development with a new superseding indictment for former Auburn AC Person & clothier Michel. The charges now levied have been narrowed & Dentons partner Hill adds one perspective, "It doesn’t happen every day. But good lawyers, as the case develops, try to move their case in the direction the facts and law takes them. This is what you’d expect with good lawyering on both sides of the case." Another, unnamed, attorney saw the move differently, "It’s highly unusual in a federal case to alter legal theories months after initial charges were filed. Basically, what they’re doing is arresting first and investigating later." A third lawyer opinion believe the case "took a step backward." (link)
Former ESPN MBB analyst & new scheduling guru Adams pens on his SMART scheduling movement, points back to his initial 90-minute presentation to Conference USA membership last spring as the launch point for the new schedule flexibility recently announced by the league. Adams says he's also been consulting with the Sun Belt & Horizon, also thinks there's opportunities in WBB. Of note, "High performing companies set policy based on the highest common denominator not the lowest common denominator. The reality is lesser performing teams don’t draw-period. Also, our goals are to improve our seed and earn more bids not to make everyone happy with participation trophies." Lots more. (link); Count The Big Lead's Lisk as a contrarian on the new scheduling policies of C-USA & the WCC, "Using the RPI Wizard at RPI Forecast, Middle Tennessee’s RPI would have gone from 33 to 30, and St. Mary’s (by dropping their two opponents) would have gone from 40 to 35. Would that have been enough to get either in? [...] The biggest factor for the Committee has been quality wins. Maybe these marginal changes will push more conference members up, but the results aren’t going to change as long as the mentality that good wins matter (without accounting for number of opportunities/venue)." (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
The Women's College World Series is in full swing (four games today) & former Event Director & Oklahoma administrator Hynes returned to OKC for the first time in two years to take in the action. Hynes recalls moving the WCWS from Sunnyvale, CA back in 1990 & the first year the entire attendance was 8,500. Did Hynes ever envision the event getting this big? "I really could not envision that. Probably the first five years, we just had really little, short bleachers out there. Probably like what's in center field. It just all of a sudden started growing. I'm tickled to death that it's gotten to this point." Hynes is also credited with hiring Sooners HC Gasso & OU WBB HC Coale. Not too shabby. (link)

Two MBB National Championships in three years will help raise some money & at Villanova the total for an initial $600M 'For the Greater Great: The Villanova Campaign to Ignite Change' is now up to $759M, 18 months earlier than the push was expected to last. 77,500 total donors, $50M as the largest single gift, 10 commitments of $10M or more, 123 of the $1M+ variety, 10 new centers of study as a byproduct, the naming of two colleges, 40 new or renovated academic or athletic facilities, doubling of the university endowment to $700M. (link)
The Spokesman-Review's Grippi asks an excellent question, "Just why would anyone want to deal with the problems college athletic directors face with these days?" Grippi reviews the financial challenges at Washington State, as well as the turmoil at Idaho, "Sure, the money is good. But the pressure from above, below and from the sides is greater than it’s ever been. Decisions made years ago that seemed reasonable at the time – for example, if WSU hadn’t spent the money it did, where would the athletic department be today? – can bite years later. It’s just not a 'settle down and enjoy a long career in one place' sort of job." (link); The Spokesman-Review's Blanchette takes stock of WSU's plans to balance its budget, wonders how the Cougars will be making concessions on some expense items to help turn the tide & not simply count on increased revenues. Blanchette: "As the new guy, Chun can only come up with a plan and try to make it work. But his future calls – on rollover contracts and raises and staff proliferation and facilities – need to reflect sanity and not just world-class sloganeering." More. (link)
espnW's Junod goes deep in recounting time he spent with Auburn Softball during the 2017 season, before then-HC Myers & the rest of the AU staff departed after the '17 campaign. Lots of interesting stuff here, tough to narrow down into a simple clip, but here's an example, "Some of the players had obtained evidence that they indeed had seen something they thought they'd seen, and now some were crying. They were passing phones back and forth and clapping their hands over their mouths in shock or bursting into angry and heartbroken tears when they saw what was on the screen. But what was on the screen? What could be on the screen? I had not a clue; I ascribed what I was witnessing to the incendiary power of gossip in close quarters. Then I settled down to watch Auburn play Florida in softball. […] I didn't understand when Coach gathered his players together and marched them back to the bus as one. I didn't understand when, even as her teammates climbed onto the bus, the player I'd identified either as an enigma or an outcast remained far apart from them, furiously using her phone. I didn't understand even when, on the plane back home, Coach went up and down the aisle, forbidding his players from using their phones and going on social media. I didn't understand until three days later, when Corey Myers resigned because, as he explained in a statement, 'it became clear to me that my relationship with my family needs to be my top priority right now.'" Lots, lots more. (link)
Former Tennessee Chancellor Davenport could exit the university entirely next week if the Board of Trustees approves a $1.33M settlement on Tuesday. UT Prez DiPietro: "I believe it is important for us to reach this agreement to allow everyone to move forward." Also of note, former VC for Communications Robinson, who was previously a Senior Assoc. AD for the Vols, is not involved in any settlement talks as his departure was amicable. (link); UNC Asheville leadership select Arthur Vining Davis Foundations Prez Cable as its next Chancellor. Cable previously helped lead at Virginia & Davidson. (link)
More Personnel: The Detroit Free Press reports that the Detroit Pistons have expressed interest in Michigan MBB HC Beilein. (link); Furman alum Davidson returns to his alma mater as the new Men's Golf HC. (link); Another alum-to-coach move, this time Villanova tabs former softball student-athlete Orchard returns as HC of the Wildcats. (link); San Jose State Women's Golf HC Dormann will retire. (link)
Tax docs from Syracuse show former AD Gross earned $1M+ in 2016 despite exiting half way through the year. Base pay pegged at $261K, with an additional $699K for "other reportable compensation," though there's no clarity on exactly what that means. In 2015 Gross was paid $846K, of which $605K was base & $125K was performance incentives. (link); Orange FB HC Babers earned $2.4M in his first year at the helm of SU's program. MBB HC Boeheim was at $2.7M, WBB HC Hillsman at $829K & former top MBB AC Hopkins at $611K. (link)
Kansas' 247Sports outlet continues its profiles on potential KU AD candidates, this time it's Arkansas State boss Mohajir. Red Wolves beat writer Kubena: "He seems very comfortable at Arkansas State. It’s also a place that he has personal ties to and he’s been comfortable there, but he’s also had to replace coaches who go back to colleges they were affiliated with. It’s something that happens throughout sports. You can find all sorts of examples of it. It’s something he won’t comment and hasn’t commented on and really just leaves you to speculate. It’s one of those things that seems like it makes sense, but he’s not going to say anything about it." Kubena goes on to note Mohajir's fundraising prowess & the overall energy he brings to the job, "[He's] kind of one of those people that value the janitor and whoever else and kind of gives everybody that energy and it passes along through the athletic department. The sports information directors feel it. The players feel it. They all surround it." (link)
Sports TV scheduling expert Sarzyniak goes 'Inside Baseball' on the first three weeks of FB match-ups on TV, notes 10 Big 12 match-ups that look to have been "member retained games," most notably being Tulsa at Texas & Army West Point at Oklahoma. In the Big Ten, "Using Rutgers at Ohio St. for an early way to clear OSU's BTN intraconference game commitment was a good idea. If the Tulane game on 9/22 ends up being the Buckeyes 2nd BTN game, they wouldn't be required to appear on the network for the rest of the season." Lots more important minutia that only readers of this email & Sarzyniak would be interested in. Isn't the web great?! (link)
Notre Dame is making good use of a partnership with students from the Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics Department as a bevy of data is gathered on Fighting Irish student-athletes & analyzed to determine a range of needs & solutions for optimal performance. Track student-athlete Rohrer: "It’s like the Campus Crossroads project, with the new buildings being attached to the stadium; the University is trying to branch out and bring everyone together—the sports and the academics—to merge that gap." Lots more in what looks like an ideal cross-campus collaboration. (link)
Also Noticed: The 2020-22 MAAC Basketball Tourneys will be held at Atlantic City's Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall. Commish Ensor: "Atlantic City stepped up in a big way. When we came down here, they made a huge presentation. You could see the enthusiasm for the event. We want that passion." The tournament will move to a Tuesday-Sunday format. (link); Liberty earned the Big South's Sasser Cup all-sports title for the third straight year. (link); Van Wagner Sports & Entertainment and Jersey Mike's announce the title sponsorship of the 2018 Jersey Mike's Jamaica Classic. Eight teams compete from November 16-18 in the newest MTE tourney. (link); UIC unveils the Basketball Excellence Fund. (link); ESPN gambling expert Purdum reports the state of Mississippi could adopt a gaming commission by June 21, which would allow betting to be legal by Football season. Correction: Earlier in the week we noted a piece that took stock of all FBS programs that sent teams to the MBB Tourney, a FB bowl game & the NCAA Baseball post-season. San Diego State was left out of our review & is one of the 16 notable brands on the list. (link) powered by Turnkey Search
