Cal State-Northridge has officially named UC Irvine AD Izzi to the same position, effective at the end of July. Prez Harrison: "CSUN athletics is a powerful vehicle for engagement -- with our students, with our more than 350,000 alumni and with our community. I warmly welcome Michael to CSUN and eagerly anticipate his leadership for our athletic programs. He has a proven track record of building a culture where student-athletes realize their full potential in the classroom and in competition." During his tenure at UCI, the Anteaters have finished in the top five of NACDA's DI-AAA standings in eight of the last 12 years, with 44 programs finishing their respective seasons ranked in the top 25. Izzi: "There is a great deal of momentum across Matador athletics. With the strong vision of President Harrison and the support of the entire Matador community, we will be competing for league titles year in and year out. I thank UC Irvine for the past decade and look forward to being a Matador and creating a legacy of success at CSUN." DHR International assisted with the search. (link)
UMKC has announced a shakeup within its athletic department that will result in AD Wilson becoming senior director for student support services in the chancellor's office. Deputy AD/SWA Gurney will take over as AD on an interim basis. Wilson has been at UMKC for 30 years, serving as AD since 2013. (link)
Oklahoma looks back at the 20-year tenure of AD Castiglione, whose time at OU has been marked by unprecedented success for the Sooners, including 37 NCAA team championships, 88 conference championships and nine consecutive top 25 finishes in the Director's Cup. Meanwhile, Sooner student-athletes have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.13 under Castiglione's watch, the best in school history. Asked what traits make Castiglione such a successful AD, former FB HC Stoops pointed to having a vision, setting expectations and communicating it all effectively. "There's also having the ultimate support of his coaches. Joe truly has always been very loyal and outgoing in every way to support and help each and every sport, for sure." Longtime Softball HC Gasso agreed, also lauding Castiglione's ability as a listener. "Not just, 'OK, I hear you. Now get out of my office.' It's someone who can really hear what you're saying and do the best they can to help you with your struggles. Listening, understanding and working with coaches together." Castiglione himself notes that "the primary keys to our ultimate success will always revolve around the collective commitment of ALL people who support our vision of creating a world-class destination and experience for student-athletes, while upholding the mission and values that drive our decisions. We know we're part of a program that is bigger than any one person. We constantly work together for the greater good of The University of Oklahoma." (link)
Louisville AD Tyra's role as a donor and fan played a role in his ability to retain Baseball HC McDonnell and WBB Walz amid increasing national demand. "[McDonnell] I met when he first got here, literally. [Walz] I met when he first got here. ... I didn't have to come in and tell them a story. They already knew the story. ... They know I give a damn." Meanwhile, in the months that MBB HC Mack has been on board, Tyra has been impressed by how easily he's made the transition, remarking that "he came into a program that had a stain on it. He's not let them hold him back. He's jumped in." Mack's lack of ego, Tyra adds, has gone a long way toward endearing him to fans, especially when it comes to accessibility. "I almost feel bad that we ask a lot of him because he's new. There is a big request for his time. So if it's a reception with donors, he is there. There has hardly been a thing unless his schedule is just prohibitive. he's really accommodated us in many ways." Moving forward, Tyra plans to focus on the fan experience while staying competitive with facilities. Combining the two ideas, Tyra envisions a baseball experience that caters to both families and adults, with a "beer garden terrace" and other amenities to make the atmosphere more fun. "I take from my old days of playing (baseball for Kentucky at) Mississippi State and LSU. Tailgating around the fence was a lot of fun. How they modernized that and brought it to the college game, we can do the same." (link)
B1G ADs have asked the NCAA FB Oversight Committee to develop a national injury reporting system in light of the recent SCOTUS decision that allows states to legalize sports gambling. Establishing such a system, they posit, is critical to protecting the integrity of the sport. Ohio State AD Smith: "We have to be more transparent. In football, we're going to kill this [idea of] gamesmanship around injuries. We don't know if we want to report as many days as the NFL, but clearly on Mondays if somebody is injured from Saturday and you know they're not going to play the following Saturday because they broke their leg, why not just say that?" National opinion on the disclosure of injuries is as varied as those who are asked. Some favor full disclosure while others, including Washington State FB HC Leach, submit: "Whatever weaknesses or vulnerabilities that we have as a team, I can't possibly fathom why I would have any interest in revealing that to my opponent." UCLA AD Guerrero adds: "All the coaches won't like it. That's OK. But if everyone does it? Yeah." (link)
USA Today columnist Myerberg examines the increasing frequency with which QBs are transferring between FB programs, pointing out that Kentucky, Michigan, Washington, LSU and Tennessee, just to name a few, will either start or possibly start transfers at QB this season. Alabama HC Saban: "I think the culture has changed a little bit. There was a time when it was sacrilegious to leave your team, to transfer." Myerberg also observes that the trend has had a waterfall effect, landing the "career back-up" on the endangered list. "Once a roster staple, senior quarterbacks who begin their careers on scholarship and stay with the same program through four years of eligibility without ascending to the starting role are now the sport’s rarest breed." Across FBS, there are only seven quarterbacks who fit the above criteria, according to Myerberg, who adds that just two -- Cal's Forrest and TCU's Muehlstein -- play in a Power 5 conference. Auburn HC Malzahn sums it up like this: "There’s only one quarterback can play and they all want to play. And I just think that after a while (with) some of these guys, reality hits that the only way they’re going to play is if a guy gets hurt." (link)
Texas A&M officials have disputed claims made by former students on ESPN's Outside the Lines last week that softball and baseball coaches were made aware of sexual assault allegations. In a statement, Softball HC Evans and Baseball HC Childress assert: "The ESPN interview was the first time that either of us were aware of this allegation. If either one of us were told by a student of such a crime -- then or now -- we absolutely would have acted immediately. We are cooperating fully as the University takes a closer look at this, as both of us place the utmost emphasis on the safety of our student athletes." School officials this week also met with a group of current and former students who have reported being sexually assaulted. TAMU President Young: "The Chancellor, Provost and I along with other campus leaders listened carefully as individuals bravely shared their experiences. We are deeply grateful for their input. We will not comment on any individual case or publicly share details of that private discussion, but I want to sincerely thank them for their testimonies and willingness to share with us directly. I reiterate our commitment to addressing concerns brought forth." (link, link)

Minnesota AD Coyle pens to the Golden Golphers fanbase on the recent Learfield Directors' Cup results, "Placing 19th puts Gopher Athletics in the top seven percent of the country. Please take a moment and consider that once more - when it comes to broad-based success, Minnesota and Gopher student-athletes are among the top seven percent of all Division I athletics departments in the country. That's an incredibly impressive feat that shows the strength and depth of our department. […] When it comes to broad-based results across the entirety of our athletics department, there are few schools in the Big Ten or around the country that can compete with Minnesota." (link)
Clemson continues to be in headlines, this time for its approach to student-athlete mental health & the "Tigers Together" initiative aim at training faculty & staff about suicide warning signs & prevention. CU Assoc. AD for Student-Athlete Services & Performance Honnen: "We're going to have all of our coaches trained to understand more of those warning signs. What do you do? What's the referral process? How do you have that conversation? We feel like that's going to be key for our coaches to break that stigma from their end to say, 'Hey, you talked to me about this, let's get you someone (to help). This is how we have this conversation, this is who I can refer you to.'" Tigers AD Radakovich: "It's incredibly important now for all student athletes. It has grown because the need has grown." (link)
Tailgate Guys on the board once again as Michigan joins the fold. Venerable Ferry Field will serve as the hosting grounds for FB gamedays with premium space for groups from five to 1,000. Tailgate Guys CEO Duffey: "Michigan Athletics did not take the process in establishing this partnership lightly, nor did we at Tailgate Guys. The Big House is the biggest and best in college football, and the Michigan fans deserve the best. That's exactly what we deliver to our guests: the best. Can't wait to get this one started!" (link)
Active duty military members, veterans & their families will have access to UCLA home sporting events at half-off ticket prices starting next competition season. The move builds on the annual Veterans & Armed Forces FB game where complementary tix are in play. Baseball admission & parking will continue to be free for military. Bruins AD Guerrero: "Southern California is home to such a large military community, and this is one small way for us to show our gratitude and appreciation for the sacrifices they have made, and continue to make, on our behalf." (link)
Administrative Moves: Texas goes with Interim VP for Diversity and Community Engagement Moore in the permanent role. As you likely know, Moore is a lead voice on diversity challenges in college athletics. (link); UW Milwaukee AD Braun hires USF Asst. AD for Marketing Schemm as the new Senior Assoc. AD for External Relations for the Panthers. (link); More on UAB's cost cutting measures, which included eliminating 12 athletic department positions. Most notably was former Softball HC Townsend. One sports information position was filled then eliminated before the new hire even started. "Fiscal responsibility" pointed to as the reasoning, but ABC 33/40 The Zone's commentators call on AD Ingram to explain. (link)

Grand Canyon has taken a major and likely final step in its path toward becoming a nonprofit university, completing an $875M sale to a nonprofit entity that will retain the GCU name. The publicly traded Grand Canyon Education (GCE) has transferred to GCU "the real property and improvements comprising the GCU campus as well as tangible and intangible academic and related operations and assets related to GCU." GCE CEO Mueller, who will remain as the university's president: "We are incredibly proud of the journey that has helped us get to where we are today. We have taken a university that was on the brink of bankruptcy and created a higher education structure that has greatly benefitted thousands of students and families, the inner-city community in which we reside and U.S. businesses that covet the graduates we produce. That is a testament to the free market system and an American success story that should be celebrated." Moving forward, GCU and GCE will operate under two separate boards, with the latter providing "technological, counseling, marketing, financial aid processing and other support services." The two entities will also split revenues. (linklink)
Belmont AD Corley profiled, reflects on his two years as the Bruins leader after 25 in the banking industry. Notes how he leveraged a number of contacts around Nashville, many of whom were quick to want to support & invest in athletics. Corley also calls it "pretty neat" to get to work with MBB HC Byrd, his own coach when he suited up on the hardwood. Corley: "We do things the right way here. The vision is to get better every day, make sure we’ve got the right staff, and bring in the right talent to give our athletes the best possible college experience they can have. [...] I’ve tried to attack it like I needed to win people over, because you never know how people might view not having athletic department experience." (link)
Illinois AD Whitman announces that for the first time since the 2005-06 and 2006-07 years, the athletic department is set to see consecutive years of growth in its annual fund as 1,700 donors have increased their financial commitments in the past year and others have donated for the first time. (link); Grambling State's 2016 HBCU FB National Championship brought in $702.2K, which helped to increase operating revenue 21%, up $1.65M to $7.85M. Since FB HC Fobbs' first year back at his alma mater in 2014, GSU has seen its revenue rise by more than $2.5M, with $162K+ in donations serving as the biggest catalyst. Ticket sales accounted for $1.37M of the pot. Tigers are still seventh among SWAC peers in revenue numbers. (link)
There's some discontent among Lamar supporters stemming from a lack of competitive success & the controversial exit of Softball HC Bruder. One 20-year donor says he's stopped giving money to the Cardinals, while others believe the department will get past the current bumps. Cardinal Club Prez Cook on the Softball situation, "I think there was a lot of confusion from our boosters. There were a lot of emotions involved. [...] All I ask for is patience. That's the best thing we can do at this point." (link)
July 1 marked the official transition date for a number of brands moving conferences & some ascending to a new division altogether, like North Alabama's jump to DI. Of note on the Lions' path up, donations have increased by 54% since announcing its plans, a record-setting $100K gift was committed, UNA's booster club generated 46% more dollars in 2017-18 & a deal with Adidas is worth $500K. There's also been a bevy of facility upgrades - like renovations to locker rooms - as well as the addition of Women's Golf & Beach Volleyball, plus a staff reorg to be better prepared for the demands of DI life. UNA AD Linder, "...we believe with the foundation built by those who came before us, along with our fantastic fan base, corporate partners, and donors, that we will be successful in our transition." (link)

"Our research suggests that the reality distortion field is real. At least in the corporate world, there may be a bright side to overconfidence: it can increase the commitment of other people to your venture." That's part of the thesis from a trio of professors in Singapore who sought to answer the question, "Can Being Overconfident Make You a Better Leader?" Late Apple boss Jobs pointed to as an example & the research found overconfident CEOs nourished better relationships with key suppliers, invested more back into company stock & were indeed better innovators. However, the general downside remains for companies with overconfidence that "permeates upper leadership," in the form of reckless acquisitions & decision-making. (link)
