Ohio State: The attorney for Bucks AD Smith posts to Facebook with his own thoughts. In part, "So, why the sanction? Well, isn't it obvious? The country was lathered into a frenzy based on erroneous information and a long delay and OSU needed to appease the lynch mob that had formed as soon as the unproven allegations were made. As a result, two great men fell on the sword for a University they dearly love. And both men faced a room full of reporters and admitted they failed in their duties to better manage and react quicker to a troubled employee even though they had no idea about the information that has since come out about some of the things he may have been doing. Those are the facts. Two men who don't deserve the public flogging but who agreed to take one for the team so this great University can move forward with all of its amazing athletic and academic initiatives. Sorry for the length of this and I am not looking fore debate. Just wanted to make sure the facts are straight." More. (link); College Football Playoff boss Hancock says the developments in Columbus will not impact Smith's role on the selection committee. (link); Former AC Smith via Twitter, "Can’t wait 2 disclose the 2.5 hr 'investigative' interview I gave 2 the people OSU employed 2 find out if Cch Meyer / Gene Smith did anything wrong... Questions were bizarre & VERY clear they weren’t investigating ANYTHING they were supposed to be... Investigating media backlash." (link); Also...
+ Sports Illustrated legal expert McCann reviews all the angles, notes, "Ohio State, then, made a decision that retains a talented coach and averts a legal showdown with an affluent and informed person and all of the accompanying fallout that would follow. Yet going forward, the university will be vulnerable to sharp criticism that it is insufficiently sensitive to domestic violence—particularly since Courtney Smith’s name went glaringly unmentioned in the press conference by Drake, Smith and Meyer in their prepared remarks." (link)
+ USA Today's Wolken: Might as well go ahead and rename the place. It's Urban Meyer State University now (link)
+ OSU junior & Student Government Assembly Speaker Murphy: "I think the committee should have either fired him or declared him innocent. Football coaches are not above the law. I’m frustrated that the committee seems to think that they are—or that students here will forget that they chose not to take a strong side but rather to walk the line." (link)
+ Yahoo's Wetzel: Ohio State's culture of cover-up helped save Urban Meyer's job (link)
+ The Athletic's Mandel: Ohio State coach Urban Meyer will never be the same (link)
+ The Athletic's Wasserman: Ohio State has kept an ugly story alive longer than it needs to be — and it can blame itself (link)
+ Big Ten Network analyst & former multi-stop HC DiNardo: "To me, this is about domestic violence. For the president of the university and the head football coach to have a press conference and no one to address the issue of domestic violence until the end when Urban was asked a question, I was disappointed." Former Maryland AD Anderson authorized the use of department funds ($15K) for FB student-athletes involved in a sexual misconduct case & did not sever ties with the law firm, The Sports Group, after he was asked to do so by the university last year. Per a UMD spokesperson, the actions showed "a serious lack of judgment in a sexual misconduct case, given the university’s commitment to a fair and impartial handling of all such matters." Anderson's view, "That report is inaccurate." The Sports Group's Jackson says the reports contain "numerous factual inaccuracies that were meant to paint Kevin Anderson in an unflattering and (I believe) false light," indicates he had "minimal" interaction with Anderson. Former Executive AD & current Terps boss Evans was not informed of the relationship & later, "Evans notified the president’s office on Sept. 27, 2017 that Anderson had not severed ties with the attorney." (link)
"We take them very seriously. We're open to all inquiries and will be very open in our records of everything we have. We feel very confident in which the things we have done." That's Texas A&M FB HC Fisher on the allegations brought forward by transferring student-athlete Marchiol. A handful of Aggies comment on the situation, including potential QB starter Mond, "I didn't really agree with it, but you know, I just try to tell everybody we're try to focus (on) this season. We got a game coming up." (link)
Hoops analytics expert Palm takes stock of the NCAA's new NET model, "In determining teams' NET rankings, the devil is in the details and the biggest problem with this new system is that we may never get the details as to how these factors are used to create the rankings. [...] People should know specifically how they are being judged. Say what you want about the RPI, at least teams knew how to figure it out. If the algorithms (a fancy word for formula) are too complex for people to understand – and let's be clear, that includes the committee itself – then they are too complex, period." Palm also points to the need for formula transparency in order for there to be independent verification, for example, "Every year since the RPI formula became publicly available, I have found mistakes in the data that the NCAA used to calculate the RPI," thinks the selection committee & NCAA will get even more heat by using a closed system. (link); ESPN's Lunardi on how NET will impact his popular Bracketology, "Might make it harder, or at least different, this year. Personally I've lessened the weight of RPI for the last several seasons. Still the same crap shoot of 10 people looking at similar results and not knowing what they'll truly value." (link)
New Maine AD Ralph introduced to the Black Bears family, building relationships is at the top of his priority list. Also, "Our coaches are going to have to outwork people in recruiting. They don’t really have a choice. We have to sell Maine as a destination. We want to make them want to be here. We want them to look at what we have in order to provide options for their parents like the coast, Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park. We want them to enjoy the region, so everyone gets invested in wanting to be here." Ralph says he'll continue to "dream big" on facility projects, just as he did at Colorado College, and not just dress things up. A bit more. (link); Here's the full presser video. (link)
Georgia Tech boss Stansbury indicates the Yellow Jackets need to be working with a budget that's $10M larger than its current state in order to fully compete with ACC peers. FY19 = $80M. After league distributions of ~$27.4M, ticket sales of $12.7M is the largest pot of money & Stansbury wants to push that number north. 2017 average FB attendance (46,885) was the lowest for Tech since 2012 (43,955) & Stansbury points to both an aging base & the importance of alumni/young fans. To cater to the later group, the Stinger Mobile Pass was rolled out at low price point of just $149 for the season. 310 have been sold so far. For the former group, more premium options are coming. (link)
Nebraska AD Moos thinks the Huskers brand "needed a little dusting off" when he arrived in Lincoln, but now, buoyed by the hire of new FB HC Frost, "it's dusted." Moos expects all UNL programs to finish in the top half of Big Ten standings, says he likes the current capacity of Memorial Stadium, no immediate FB facility plans, Frost may grow his roster to 150, which could make for some Title IX challenges with a need for more spots in women's sports. (link)
New Austin Peay AD Harrison points to retaining FB HC Healy as a key piece to his early tenure in Clarksville. Harrison recounts the confidence Tennessee AD Fulmer expressed in Healy, as well as his own past at Duke, where he witnessed HC Cutcliffe turn the Blue Devils' ship. Harrison: "Austin Peay has a great commitment to being successful in athletics, particularly in football. Dr. (Alisa) White, our president, is the largest reason that I took this job. Her desire to use athletics as another vehicle to increase the profile of our great university and understanding the role of athletics has made it exciting and made this job desirable." (link)
From Law360: "College athletes challenging the NCAA's amateurism system in a case scheduled for a bench trial next month are seeking to force the commissioner of the America East Conference to testify, pointing out that she has made public statements that allowing the top conferences to pay athletes might actually help competitive balance in college sports." (link); Former Northwestern MBB student-athlete Vassar has now filed a suit against the university on the grounds of defamation that made it impossible for him to continue his athletic career at another program. "The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks actual damages, trebled damages, punitive damages, pre-judgment and post-judgment interests, costs of suit, attorney's fees and other relief." (link)

Dynamic pricing to the nth degree is coming to United Airlines as widow & aisle seats in economy areas will begin to be priced slightly higher than others. United Prez Kirby: "We’ve got Economy Plus today, which has more legroom, but there are also rows that don’t have more legroom but they are at the front of the airplane. We are now going to let those people select those seats as well for a fee." Kirby also says lie-flat options are coming to more coast to coast domestic flights in the next couple of years. (link)

Interim Florida State AD & university Chief of Staff Coburn wants to "repair" the relationship between Seminole Boosters & the athletic department, "’s a little bit of a delicate time there especially going into a campaign to raise money for facilities. Let’s face it, I’ve known Andy Miller since we were sitting on the porch of the (sorority Alpha Delta Pi) house waiting on our dates in 1973. So if I can’t work with Andy Miller, then chances are slim for fixing it." Further, Coburn does not think the situation will negatively impact the candidate pool for the permanent AD hire, though it may be a "deterrent." For now, he's focused on "getting the golf course project going" and "We've got Coach Martin leaving, we've got to figure that out." Timeline on a new AD looks to be a couple of months. (link)
Down in Tampa, new USF AD Kelly says there's currently $11M available for the new FB practice facility & operations building, estimated to run $48M, points to 2020 as a hopeful completion timeframe. More: "This is something we need to do now. We need to make these improvements to stay competitive." Kelly does not want to entertain the idea of doing the practice facility & operations space separately, "We need to get them both done." (link)
After four months at the helm in Beaumont, Lamar AD Born looks out to the 2018-19 academic year, "I’ve met all the staff from the secretary to the head football coach. I’m learning about Lamar and what we need. I have a list of things to accomplish now, so that’s what the next 90 days will be." Points to upgrades for the FB fan experience, new turf for Baseball, an enhanced social media approach for the Cardinals, plus an aggressive approach on ticket & sponsorship sales. Born on his own value proposition, "Being a former student athlete helps. My job is to hire good coaches and raise money and support our student-athletes. Every daily decision made — how does that support our student athletes?" Ultimate goal: Southland Commissioners Cup, which LU has never won. (link)'s latest 'Candid Coaches' question: Has the FBI's investigation significantly reduced cheating in the past 10 months? 47% = no, 43% = yes, 10% = unsure. Notable comments, "I believe [some] programs benefitted and stole a player or two when the news first broke [because other programs that might've previously cheated weren't]. But, as the investigation stalls out, the Wild West will continue, if not become more calculated. […] Coaches are just being more careful now. More burner phones now. Lol. […] I would hope and think so. Dudes getting arrested and losing their high-paying jobs, not to mention wire taps and surveillance. If that doesn't reduce it, not sure what will." (link)
New Stadium MBB reporter & former ESPN headliner Goodman talked with The Big Lead's Glasspiegel on his new gig & his time in Bristol. On the MBB-FBI developments, "To be honest, I was told by one higher-up at ESPN to stand down on the FBI stuff, basically not to cover it. I pitched numerous ideas, tried to do it, and was basically told not to. And I said to the person, 'How can that be the case, with all the relationships, with all the information I’m privy to in college basketball, wouldn’t you want me leading the charge on this?' And instead it was almost like 'Well, don’t ruffle any feathers with the relationships you have.' [...] But, you know, the greatest thing about ESPN is its size and the toughest thing to navigate is its size, because they’ve got so many moving parts and so many people, and like you said, leadership changes quickly." Lots more. (link - article, link - full transcript)
Interesting read on Florida's Gatorade Fuel Truck that sits outside the Gators indoor training facility (or anywhere a UF practice takes place) & offers a selection of refueling options after workouts. "Imagine a combination of a Ford Super Duty F450 and a food or ice cream truck — only bigger. That’s what the fuel truck looks like. It’s almost entirely black except for orange borders around the white Gatorade logo on the side. There’s a large Gatorade grill in front. The passenger door reads, 'Property of Florida.'" UF's nutrition staff point to two freezers, ice machines, blenders, plenty of power & sink space to individualize concoctions for student-athletes. Volunteer staffer Childs: "The fact that we can do all of this in here instead of over by the office is awesome. It has boosted our game significantly." More. (link)
It's Personnel: TCU AD Donati has formed a new executive team for the Horned Frogs & it looks like it includes any staffer at the Assoc. AD level & up. (link); Old Dominion MBB HC Jones gets a new four-year contract with a roughly $50K annual raise making him among the three highest-paid coaches in C-USA at $506K. (link); Former Michigan State Gymnastics HC Klages is the latest MSU official charged in association with the Nassar saga as yesterday she was accused of lying to an investigator in June when she denied that witnesses told her of the sexual assaults years ago. (link); Alabama A&M AD Hicks goes with alum and pitching coach Lora as the next Baseball HC for the Bulldogs. (link); Former Butler Women's Tennis HC Bailey-Duvall has accepted the same position at Middle Tennessee. (link); San José State AD Tuite hires Reimer-Gonzales as the new Director of T&F/XC for the Spartans. (link); Outsports profiles Illinois Women's Diving Coach Pollard who is openly gay. As of August, 39 college coaches are publicly "out," a number that has risen substantially since the publication started tracking it in 2015, with 13, 16 and 24 coaches out in the past three years, respectively. "Entering the 2018-19 school year, the number of publicly out LGBTQ college athletes that Outsports is aware of increased to 76. That is a 10.1 percent increase from 69 publicly out athletes at this point last year." (link)
Sticking with the Bama for another clip, AD Byrne was in Dothan to chat with supporters & touched on the $600M 'The Crimson Standard' campaign. "Some things, like our game day locker room, even our locker room at Mal Moore are starting to show their age. That’s the time. You don’t wait until it’s crumbling. You always want to have a good cycle with each renovation, each update you do. This was, we feel, the right time to do those things and address them. The response has been good and we’re very pleased about that." Points to adding green space & a patio area in the south end zone as an idea that was stolen from the Green Bay Packers, "They have an end zone club at the very top of the stadium, kind of the hardest place to get everybody to stay and be there. They took a different concept and it’s been very popular." (link)
"I have just hit my three-month mark here, and I don’t think my feet have touched the ground yet. Really, my job is to make (athletics) more integrated into the campus." Cal boss Knowlton participated in the Campus Conversations series yesterday in Berkeley, more, "There’s 1,500 universities in the country that have athletics, and at last count I think there are 14 of them that don’t have institutional (financial) support and they don’t look like us; we don’t want to be like them either, we’re very different from what they are. I think the investment in us is maybe more than I would like — we have some great opportunities to generate more revenue, to be more philanthropic, and those are things that we are going to work hard on — but there is an investment to provide this world-class opportunity." (link)
The state of West Virginia now features legalized sports gambling, so here's the message Marshall AD Hamrick delivered to the university's Board of Governors, "One point-shaving incident, one student-athlete betting on a game, one coach, one staff member, one board of governor - something goes wrong, it could do great harm to our university. […] The moral of that story is when we play in that football stadium or that basketball arena, there will be people sitting beside you that have bet dollars on Marshall to either win or lose. And the point spread is important. A missed extra point, a missed free throw, a bad snap could be the difference in the game, and the issues come when outside entities make contact with our student-athletes and try to influence them to change the outcome of a game." (link)
The Pac-12 adds two more technology items to its FB sidelines this season: virtual reality goggles designed to track ocular motor efficiency and a tablet computer. Both are part of a research project the conference hopes will help revolutionize our understanding of concussions." Dir. of the Pac-12's Concussion Coordinating Unit and Colorado Assoc. Professor McQueen: "Research shows that proper recovery limits the chances of a secondary concussion, and that the sooner a player is removed from play, the faster the recovery. The student-athletes at Division I schools, unlike, say, an emergency room population, are monitored daily — it’s a unique level of high surveillance into how concussion works." While all schools have the equipment, only Colorado, Washington, Oregon State, USC and Utah will have their results officially entered into the database this year, the other seven schools will be phased in over the next two seasons. More McQueen: "It’s pretty hard to fake it with the VR. The trainers will know." (link)
Cash: The 'Shareholders Society' is UCF's new major gifts arm starting at a minimum commitment of $25K over five years. There's also now a 'ChargeOn Fund' for $5K & under. (link); Central Arkansas topped $2M in athletic department fundraising in FY18, including more than $453K to the Purple Circle, $815K+ in corporate sponsorship and a $1M anonymous planned gift. (link); The Spartan Athletics Fund is the new name for the primary annual giving platform for San José State athletics, replacing the 60-year old Spartan Foundation. A combined effort with university advancement, new giving levels and benefits are part of the new look. (link)
Kansas's Jayhawk Network is now a part of ESPN+, which, in part, means KU fans in the state will no longer be blacked out on some broadcasts. "One football game, six men’s basketball contests, Late Night in the Phog and the spring football contest highlight the Jayhawk Network’s 200 live events and shoulder programming aired annually, and in addition to the ESPN+ availability, those specific events will continue to be aired blackout-free on Cox Cable in the Topeka area." (link); Keep an eye on how the $9M Tiger Woods-Phil Mickelson head-to-head match-up does over the Thanksgiving holiday as its move to pay-per-view via Turner's B/R Live could be a bellwether in more sporting brands leveraging the revenue model. (link)
Also Noticed: Tennessee has adopted a new policy that prohibits athletics department officials from being present anytime police interview student-athletes. (link); The MEAC has officially paid off the mortgage on its headquarters. (link); Conference USA teams will honor former Commish Slive with custom helmet stickers this fall. (link); Colorado State and Colorado have signed an agreement to renew the "Rocky Mountain Showdown" in 2023 at Folsom Field and 2024 at Canvas Stadium. (link); Incarnate Word continues its momentum, teams up with Frost Bank to create a Salute to Service Program to provides free entry to all UIW athletic events for military members. (link); LSU FB student-athlete Fulton was reinstated by the NCAA yesterday, concluding a nearly 19-month compliance standoff. "The reversal — a boon for LSU's secondary — came after athletic director Joe Alleva sent a four-page letter on Aug. 17 to an NCAA interpretive staff, requesting the governing body to reclassify Fulton’s violation to a 'urine substitution,' which carries a one-year suspension instead of a 'tampering rule,' which was the NCAA's initial ruling and carries a two-year suspension." Fulton was caught using someone else's urine during a drug test. (link); LSU OL student-athlete Ingram is out on bond after being arrested in Dallas County on sexual assault charges earlier this month. He has been suspended from the team since the day following his arrest. (link); The Eastern College Athletic Conference has a new licensing corporate partner in GradMail, an email service that provides graduates and fans of any U.S. college a personal .com address showcasing the school name. (link); Actor Eric Stonestreet's "recruiting visit" at Kansas State is a multi-episode endeavor, check out part two. (link); Ball State will sell beer at FB, MBB and WBB games as part of a year-long pilot program.(link)
You may have already listened to best-selling author Miller's podcast series on Alabama FB's success & here's the full interview with Crimson Tide HC Saban. All sorts of good takeaways from college FB's most accomplished active HC, including, "It's a different mindset completely to try to be successful. As opposed to maintaining success because success is not a continuum, it's momentary and if you're going to continue to be successful, you have to do things in an even better way than what make you successful. And, that's not normal or easy to do." Lots more, including thoughts on discipline, punishment, setting the example as a leader, etc. (link - episode, link - full transcript)
