The Big Sky turns to current Learfield SVP & former Akron AD Wistrcill as its next Commissioner. Sacramento State President & Big Sky President's Council chair Nelson: "In Tom, we have a leader who will continue to guide the Big Sky to even greater heights. As one of his fellow commissioners said, 'Tom is creative and visionary.’'We look forward to working with him. The future is very bright for the Big Sky Conference." Learfield CEO Brown: "I’ve known and worked alongside Tom Wistrcill for nearly two decades. He’s a strong, highly qualified and skilled leader. He will bring creativity and enthusiasm to the Big Sky Conference as its next Commissioner." First day: December 10th. (link)
Outgoing Vanderbilt AD Williams discusses a handful of topics key to the Commodores, including the current search for his replacement, "I’ve heard a list of, I guess it’s going on 25 people now, who are gonna have the job. That room’s just not big enough for 25 people. I haven’t been following it but every now and then I hear another name. I don’t know what’s going on." On the possibility of an out-of-the-box AD hire, mentions Arizona State boss Anderson, Mississippi State's Cohen & South Carolina's Tanner, "I think you have to know the place, you have to know the people, you have to decide what you wanna be. What do you wanna be when you grow up and who are you and what does that have? I think there are people inside our department that are good and could do the job if that’s the job the university wants." More. (link)
Southern Miss AD Gilbert's name is building momentum for ECU's opening as he worked for Special Advisor to the Chancellor Hart at Tennessee for a number of years. Golden Eagles Asst. AD for Athletic Communications Duggan says he's not aware if Gilbert is involved in Greenville. The Reflector also reports current UNC Wilmington AD & former lead Pirates fundraiser Bass is not in the mix, points out Eastern Michigan's Wetherbee & Charleston Southern's Barber as notable former ECU leaders. (link)
Kansas Chancellor Girod on the MBB-FBI developments & if he's spoken with Jayhawks AC Townsend, who was mentioned during the trial, "We are waiting for direction from the NCAA, and we are officially in stand-down mode until they engage, and they have indicated they are going to engage. So, no, I have not. [...] My assumption is the NCAA will want to look into it." (link)
Los Angeles Times reporter Fenno has sources who tell him embattled former aspiring agent Dawkins kept most of the cash intended for, among others, former USC MBB AC Bland to convince then-Trojans student-athlete Melton to use Dawkins' budding agency. The amount in question that Dawkins allegedly kept was $5K, though part of Bland's case also includes a later $13K payment from Dawkins. I had forgotten Bland's attorney is also currently representing Mexican drug kingpin Guzman in his high-profile trial in New York City. No comment from Bland's camp. (link)
Northern Illinois AD Frazier rolls out a new strategic plan for the Huskies built around the four pillars of the student-athlete experience, communication & the NIU family, community connection & financial stability. Each pillar has a number of goals & objectives, the most in-depth of which looks to be a 12-point of how to best diversify & increase revenue streams to decrease dependency on the university. "Securing a naming rights partner" is one key point on that roadmap. Frazier excited about the plan, points to so many campus leaders being fully invested in the process. Lots here. (link - release, link - full plan)
The Wall Street Journal's Bachman & Saunders dig back in on how changes in the federal tax code are impacting athletic departments. Oklahoma AD Castiglione on how it's all played out in Norman, "...there’s been some impact because we’ve heard directly from some donors who have decided not to renew tickets. More than a handful." Georgia Deputy AD for Development Borman on conversations about major gifts, "They want to have a major impact, and we’re having to tell them we don’t know if the gift is going to be deductible if they get priority points." Looks like Penn State is telling donors seat donations can't be deducted, but other giving that includes points can be. Iowa & Ole Miss are saying there's no tax deductibility if points are involved. (link)
TV/OTT: Notre Dame AD Swarbrick continues to be hot on the wire, this time it's an interview with Bloomberg's Barr & Soshnick in which he believes significant change is coming to college athletics. On the media front, Swarbrick thinks there are other brands, in addition to the Fighting Irish, who could make it as an Independent & do their own broadcast deals. Reiterates ND will not venture into the world of paying student-athletes, if that day ever comes, but does think there's an equitable way to compensate for name/image/likeness through a group licensing approach. More. (link); DAZN's Skipper on the company's deal with Major League Baseball, "…we have to be pragmatic and innovative. There isn’t a whole lot of content to buy in the United States. […] In this case, we’re creating a new product that I think will appeal to a young audience. We think it’s a young multicultural audience. Baseball is anxious to get young African Americans watching; they already have a large Hispanic audience. And we think this is a good entry point for people who aren’t currently watching games." (link); The Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner reminds us of big rights packages coming up for renewal/renegotiation & that the Big Ten could start working on deals in the Fall of 2021 & the Pac-12 in the Fall of 2022. (link)

South Carolina will pay Akron $1.3M for a December 1st matchup in Columbia that will serve as the 12th game for both programs after earlier cancellations. (link); Sports Illustrated's Staples thinks the Big 12 & Pac-12, along with the ACC, should all be pushing hardest for an expansion to the CFP. Staples: "Swofford probably would be in. The SEC’s Greg Sankey has every reason to love the four-team model, but the prevailing opinion at his schools would be that an eight-team playoff means a better chance that eight SEC schools make the bracket. One or two more could tip the balance, and that’s where Bowlsby and Scott come in." (link)

Secretary of Education DeVos presents proposed changes to how colleges & universities would be expected to handle sexual misconduct situations. Notably, from Inside Higher Ed, "One of the rule's biggest changes from previous federal policy is that it would make institutions responsible only for investigating misconduct that occurred within a college's own programs. Advocates for victims had warned this would leave institutions off the hook for incidents that occurred off-campus, but documents released by the department Friday emphasize that geography alone does not dictate whether misconduct falls under the purview of Title IX. The proposed regulation also would allow colleges to set their own evidentiary standard for making findings of misconduct. And it would require that colleges allow for cross-examination of students in those campus proceedings -- a major point of contention -- although no interaction by the parties themselves would be allowed." More. (link - IHE, link - full doc); Push back from Brenda Tracy, "THIS IS THE WORST CASE SCENARIO FOR ATHLETICS. Under these rules Coaches & athletic staff won’t be held accountable or made responsible for reporting what they know, covered up or ignored. Under these rules Baylor wouldn’t have been a thing. Let that f------ sink in." (link)
Buyout payments for former Nebraska FB HC Riley ended up being one lump sum of $6.235M once he was added to the staff at Oregon State. Former Huskers AD & current Texas Executive Senior Assoc. AD for Internal Affairs Eichorst received $762K from the university once he joined the Longhorns team. Current UNL AD Moos recently noted both commitments were "paid off." (link)
A number of outlets reported yesterday Kansas AD Long has reached an agreement with former LSU/Oklahoma State FB HC Miles to take over the Jayhawks' program.'s Dodd indicates the two parties are just "working out the details." Dodd also has a source who tells him the Miles family is planning to make the move to Lawrence. (link)
Tailgate Guys adds another notable brand to its portfolio as it will now work with the College Football Playoff on pre-game hospitality packages for the upcoming National Championship tilt in Santa Clara. Tailgate Guys CEO Duffey: "To say that we are excited to partner with the College Football Playoff is an absolute understatement. Adding the CFP National Championship to our already strong and continually-growing roster of partners is the perfect way to cap off another successful season in which our team has stepped up to host over a million fans from coast to coast." (link)
Stadium's Goodman continues his "Conference Chain of Command" series, which ranks the attractiveness of each MBB HC job in a league based on criteria ranging from tradition, media exposure & facilities to admission requirements, budget/resources & geographical recruiting base. Coaches within the league vote & this time the spotlight is on the Big West. Order: Long Beach State, Hawaii, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge, UC Davis, Cal Poly and UC Riverside. (link)
More Personnel: You may have seen the video of Houston FB HC Applewhite & high-profile student-athlete Oliver getting into it a bit during halftime of Thursday night's game against Tulane. The issue seemed to center on Oliver wearing a jacket on the sidelines even though he wasn't playing. Both parties have released comments on the situation with "passionate" being a key word. (link - release, link - video); The Historical Basketball League (HBL) has hired longtime NBA player West as COO. (link); The Ohio State Board of Trustees approved a 2.5% raise and a $212K bonus for Prez Drake, whose base salary is now $870K+. New Turnkey Search Managing Director & General Manager Alessandri chats with 1.Question on dynamic changes occurring around the media landscape. Alessandri, who spent over 20 years at ESPN, the last three as Chief of Staff, and another handful in executive management at Univision, reviews the interesting business developments surrounding legalized sports gambling, the importance of understanding the "rails" on which streaming content is delivered, how he plans to build Turnkey's business in the space, the deep pockets of FAANG companies at they apply to rights fees, how every brand is its own media entity & the need to truly embrace the opportunity. Plus more. (link)

Wisconsin-Milwaukee launches "United We Roar," an integrated marketing and branding campaign around the slogan that was adopted by the athletic department for the past few years. Panthers AD Braun: "The goal of the campaign is to build brand awareness while uniting donors, students, alumni and fans while also telling the story of Milwaukee athletics through unique avenues." Milwaukee's night skyline is the backdrop image of the ads, developed in part by Columbus, Ohio-based Ologie LLC and Chicago-based 4FRONT, with most of the creative for the campaign performed in-house, per Braun. Funding for the push comes from the department's budget. (link)
Former Penn AD Bilsky wrote a guest column for the Daily Pennsylvanian lamenting the name-change of the Palestra floor to "Macquarie Court." Bilsky is "concerned that the naming sets an unwelcome precedent." More: "The Ivy Presidents as a group can sometimes be inflexible (i.e. Ivy prohibition of football competing in the NCAA playoffs). But they are right to insist we maintain our core principles and values even when it keeps us apart from the rest of Division I. I assume that the University’s senior leadership participated in the decision to name Macquarie Court. Since Penn is fortunate to have outstanding senior leaders who do understand and are sensitive to institutional history, it is surprising that, in this case, dollars seemed to outweigh sentiment and tradition." Recalls turning down a $25M offer to rename the court under his tenure. (link)
Alumni Tom and Stacey McNamara give $1M to UCF for the Recovery Cove, which is part of the privately-funded $30M Athletics Village. Looks like essentially a lazy river and will be used primarily for student-athletes, but will also be available to fans on gamedays for "covegating." Construction costs on the cove projected to come in under $2M, but revenue projections from covegating expected to surpass that number. Knights AD White: "Generating revenue from incredible premium experiences such as Covegating will continue to push Orlando’s Hometown Team toward becoming even more self-sustaining into the future." "Covegating" is now a thing. (link)
The Athletic's Vannini goes deep on UAB FB's resurgence. Blazers HC Clark on success since the return,  "I really just hoped to be competitive. I enjoy winning and expect it, but I know it sounds corny, but I’m about the process to get there. The training, the practice. If they do those things, it’s always kind of worked out. We’ve been blessed up to this point. But I’m still shocked." AC Reeves calls the past few years "the greatest jigsaw puzzle you had to put together" as the Blazers' recruiting tactics had to include whether or not coaches thought a prospective student-athlete was a "good fit and can go through the process to get to Game 1?" AD Ingram recalls raising $5M in 30 seconds when the school was still short on funds after already raising $17.2M. Lots here. (link)
Canisius sophomore XC student-athlete Scheck was left with $20 to her name when her family disowned her in August upon learning she was gay. Scheck's coaches couldn't help her financially, but her roommate started a GoFundMe page with a $5K goal. The page raised nearly $26K in nine days and the NCAA came calling. Initially, Scheck was stripped of her eligibility, but the NCAA has now reversed that decision, "Emily Scheck can retain her eligibility and continue to receive GoFundMe donations that assist her with living and educational expenses. NCAA staff worked with Canisius College to provide guidance that the fundraiser can continue with school monitoring and will continue to assist as needed. NCAA rules and waiver precedent allow a school to assist a student-athlete with a fundraiser after a significant live event occurs." (link)
Also Noticed: Cal and Stanford will postpone today's previously scheduled FB tilt due to dangerous air quality as a result of the fires in California. Rescheduled for Dec. 1. (link); Nevada and San Jose State will move up the start time of their kick by two hours because of air quality, which is, "more favorable" during daytime readings. (link); For the same reasons, UC Davis and Sacramento State will relocate to Mackay Stadium on Nevada's campus for today's kick. (link); Florida State and Seminole Boosters, Inc. will partner with Sportech's Bump 50:50 to create the "FSU 50/50 raffle." Tickets prices range from two tickets for $5; five for $10; 20 for $20; 100 for $40. (link);  Indiana State hosted its first Day of Giving - All In for Elevate, raising $153K from 720 donors on Thursday in a 24-hour period. (link); The NHL Blackhawks offer an $88 monthly option for "in building passes," but unlike what the NBA's Warriors offer, this pass will allow you to see live action with standing room. (link); Some more behind the scenes pictures of Cincinnati's renovated Fifth Third Arena. (link); ESPN has more than 200 games scheduled for remote college basketball broadcasts this year.
