D1.jobs: New opportunities below at Miami (FL), South Dakota & Brown. Post your team openings in the most-read daily publication in college athletics. Learn more here.
As shared in last night's Breaking News email, Air Force is restructuring its AD position under the Air Force Athletic Association Corporation and out of the government's control. The move will allow the Academy to offer a more competitive compensation package and the new AD to be "directly involved in fundraising as a representative of the 501(C)(3) corporation, a role that wasn’t allowed previously." A spokesman for Air Force also noted that a new AD could be announced by the end of the year. Parker is assisting with the process. (link)
The Murray State AD search is down to 15. Timeline: Interviews in early January, identify a new leader by the end of February, make the actual hire in March. No word if Interim AD Milkman is still in the mix. Regents say some candidates have backgrounds at Kentucky, Stanford & Duke. (link); Whomever becomes the new boss of the Racers will inherit an extended contract for FB HC Stewart, who got three more years to lead the OVC program. (link)
"There were a couple of us about five or six years ago that were concerned with the financial model we were creating within the Pac-12. We constructively tried to ask some questions. […] And when we would raise questions, it was challenging because there wasn't a lot of concern with what we had to say. That was frustrating. I feel very fortunate in the Southeastern Conference. Our commissioner, Greg Sankey, is awesome. He is very collaborative in what we do." That's current Alabama AD & former Arizona boss Byrne on some of the financial & leadership alignment challenges he faced as a Pac-12 AD. Further, Byrne says "maximizing resources and getting them to the campuses so they can be competitive nationally" is one key role of a conference office. (link); The Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner points to the league as the leader among 'Power 5' conferences in diversity at the FB HC spot. With Colorado's hire of former Georgia DC Tucker, 33.3% of the HCs in the Pac-12 are minorities. The Pac-12 has four such HCs, only two less than the rest of the P5 combined (ACC = 2, Big 12 = 0, Big Ten = 3, SEC = 1). (link)
More details on the separation terms between New Mexico & Deputy AD Hutchins. The $175K buyout will be paid over 14 months at $14,583.34 per month. Hutchins membership at Tanoan Country Club will be paid through June & he can convert some remaining sick days to cash. Looks like Lobos AD Nunez informed Hutchins back in the Fall he wasn't part of the plans moving forward. (link)
First, ESPN's Nowkhah, "Know what I’d like to see? #UCF, show us all the rejection letters and emails from major programs you’ve tried to schedule. Let us in on the 'scheduling challenges' you’ve faced.  They keep you out of the playoff, so perhaps a little transparency can build sympathy." Then, UCF Assoc. AD for Strategic Communications Seeley, "Here's the issue. We don't want to throw colleagues/other schools under the bus. If we call them out now, are they going to be more or less willing to schedule us in the future? Trying to be professional about it." Nowkhah in response, "Thanks, Andy. Honestly, they are going to schedule you anyway. So I think the public, and potentially the playoff committee, would sympathize with your efforts to schedule these programs. Who cares what the programs think?" (link); The Athletic's Kersey: "Honestly, I kinda agree with @ESPNDari here. At the very least, maybe somebody should file an FOI request and see if what UCF has been saying is the truth, rather than just taking its word for it." Finally, USA Today's Wolken: "This is just a distraction. The real talk answer is UCF/Group of Five is not going to make a four team playoff. Ever. Everything else is noise." (link)
Sticking with the theme, Florida AD Stricklin says he'd schedule UCF if it were of the 2-for-1 variety & in the right spot for the Gators. Stricklin: "We do home-and-homes with like FSUs and Power 5 leagues. We haven’t done any home-and-homes with non-Power 5 teams. I don’t think we would start that. But I’d love to schedule them [the Knights] in a game." UCF AD White: "Top 10 programs don’t schedule two-for-one series where the balance is not in their favor. Our growing fanbase and our student-athletes deserve better than that. However, It sounds as though a single game could be an option and I’d bet there are plenty of neutral-site locations that would love to host a game of that magnitude. Perhaps we could work out a three-game series, with a home-and-home and a neutral site involved." (link)
Here's SBD/SBJ's mash up from Thursday's Day 2 of the Learfield-SBJ Intercollegiate Athletics Forum. Notable conversation on the Rice Commission & direction of MBB included former Hofstra/UConn AD Hathaway, "There are real things in the commission report that are making an impact on basketball. We all understand it’s not going to turn on a dime.” Big East Commish Ackerman "made a good point. She noted that any new charges or scandals could set progress back significantly." Lots more good stuff. (link); College headliner Smith also reminded of an interesting line of discussion with SEC Commish Sankey about the student-athlete safety issues around long overtime games, like the 7 OT Texas A&M-LSU thriller. Sankey: "If we’re really thinking about the health and well-being of the student athletes, the conversation about ties will come back." Again, more. (link)
Venerable Baseball brands Wilson & Louisville Slugger, along with other big names like Atomic, DiMarini, EvoShield & Salomon are all part of a reported $5.2B deal that could see Amer Sports be purchased by a consortium led by Chinese buyout firm Anta Sports Products. All signs point to Amer continuing to operate as an autonomous unit. Goldman Sachs & Citigroup were also integral to the deal making. (link

UTSA AD Campos outlines a new 'Roadrunner Gameplan' for her department. Winning Values: Excellence, Integrity & Unity. Four Strategic Initiatives: Student-Athlete Experience, Culture of Excellence, Resource Development & Uniting Our Community. PICTOR Group helped with the process as Campos also notes, "Through the creation of four committees, that each represent the four strategic initiatives, we have already made progress on multiple goals, including restructuring the department, experiencing the second-highest attended football game in our history and hiring the architects of Populous & MarmonMok to program the Roadrunner Athletics Center of Excellence." (link)
Still new St. John's AD Cragg announces a staff reorg for the Red Storm. Three key groups: Executive Staff, Senior Staff & Senior Advisors. Executive Staff: Senior Deputy AD Meehan, Deputy AD/COO Diffley, Assoc. AD for Student Services Rienecker, Senior Assoc. AD for Business Affairs/CFO Barry, Senior Assoc. AD for External Relations Dombroski & Assoc. AD for Compliance Trani. The Senior Staff includes a cross-section of mostly Asst. ADs. Senior Advisors include the likes of AD Emeritus Kaiser, VP for Student Development Kaplan, FAR See & VP for Advancement & University Relations Vaupel. New sport administrator assignments are also listed at the bottom of the release. (link)
Longtime Big Sky Deputy Commish Loghry is calling it a career at the end of the month. Loghry has helped move the conference forward for the past 24 years. Sacramento State Prez & Big Sky Prez Council chair Nelsen: "Without him, the Conference would never have accomplished what we have accomplished. We, and I in particular, owe him utmost gratitude and respect. He is a true servant leader." (link); Fairfield AD Schlickmann hires Hartford Assoc. AD for Compliance Bell as the new Assoc. AD for Compliance & Recruitment for the Stags. Bell will also serve as sport facilitator for Men's & Women's Cross Country. (link)
It's That Time of Year: Georgia Tech AD Stansbury hires Temple HC Collins as the new skipper of the Yellow Jackets. Stansbury used Turnkey Search to help. (link, link); Liberty AD McCaw hits the headlines with former Ole Miss HC Freeze taking over in Lynchburg. (link); Lehigh HC Coen steps away due to a diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer's. (link); Charleston Southern AD Barber is on the clock. (link); As is Savannah State Interim AD Mashariki. (link); UCF's Heupel gets an extension through mid-January of 2024. No word on any changed terms. (link); New Mexico HC Davie & Lobos AD Nunez say they're in the fight together to turn around the program. (link); The Daily News-Record's Madia: "According to a source, JMU is getting the full $750,000 buyout for Mike Houston leaving early. Houston's new ECU contract states ECU will pay JMU $500K of the $750K." (link)
Appalachian State AD Gillin indicates he's been ready to execute a FB HC search for a number of years as the Mountaineers had been winning at a significant clip under former boss & new Louisville skipper Satterfield. Gillin: "When you go 11-2 and then 10-3 and 9-4 and have a chance to go 11-2, you know the phone is going to ring one day. We’ve been prepared. We’ve had a running list of candidates since 2015 and we’ve been weekly looking over our list. This has been an ongoing process that you always have to be prepared for." Gillin points to the early signing period as a key time marker, but generally says his hiring outlook is "open." More, but mostly standard answers to what he's looking for in a new HC. (link)
Stadium's Goodman continues his 'Coaches Chain of Command' series with the Big South. League HCs voted across nine categories for each program to compile a final ranking. Results: Winthrop, High Point, Radford, UNC Asheville, Campbell, Hampton, Charleston Southern, Gardner Webb, Longwood, USC Upstate, Presbyterian. Biggest gap between a single score & a final rank comes at High Point where coaches voted it the hardest admission requirements, but the second best overall job. (link)
MAC Commish Steinbrecher with another 'Conversations with the Commish' entry, this time has Buffalo Prez Tripathi across the table. Of note, Tripathi points to the importance of moving forward while operating within a budget, says being highly involved at the NCAA-level (Board of Directors, Board of Governors, Finance Committee chair) is no different than leading a university. Tripathi thinks if a random college sports fan sat in on a Broad of Directors or Governors meeting, they'd see a group highly committed to athletics & academics, as well as making sure student-athletes of all opportunity backgrounds have a chance to graduate. More. (link)
New ECU AD Gilbert pens to the Pirate Club members, "We want to win, we want to do it in the right way and we want to have fun. Now is the time for us to come together as Pirates and build upon the foundation laid out in October of 1961 when we kicked-off the first major organized fundraising campaign on behalf of ECU Athletics. We have a distinguished and storied tradition that generous Pirates like you continue to impact." (link); Meanwhile, back at Southern Miss, the 'To The Top' podcast points to Senior Assoc. AD for Internal Operations Hegenauer, Central Arkansas AD Teague, Troy AD & former USM Deputy AD McClain, Georgia Tech Assoc. AD for Facilities, Operations & Events Grice & UCF Deputy AD for Brand Activation Carr as possible candidates. Hosts Arrington & Bailey do not think Prez Bennett will use a search firm this time around. (link)
Colgate AD Moore profiled by the university newspaper as one of the 'People of the Year.' Moore on her engagements with alumni thus far, "[They] care very deeply about students, which engages students and student athletes in different ways." Moore on a Track & Field fundraising push early in her career at Missouri, "[It] set an expectation for how life [works] as a professional... You look around, scan the landscape, see where there are things that could be better and you try to make them better." Moore's keys to success as she continues to get further ingrained in Hamilton, "To love, to listen & to lead." (link)
"I think we miscalculated a little bit. The perception became that you could just roll a talent out there and it doesn't matter what he or she is saying — that the content didn't matter. I just never believed that." Via ESPN EVP of Studio & Event Production Williamson on the changing style of SportsCenter. More: "When people whine or complain, 'It's not the way it used to be - fragmentation, blah blah blah,' it's all crap. You get information about your customers and adjust what you're doing. [...] Let's not overthink 'SportsCenter.' The goal is to get more people to watch today than watched yesterday." (link)
Now that every bid came in over budget, Iowa will rethink its plans for building a new $10M Finkbine Golf Clubhouse. The biggest difference will be instead of spending $7.5M on a 23K square-foot new building, the Hawkeyes are now looking at $7M for a 19k square-foot space. The bids received in September ranged from $7.9M to $8.4M but did not include extra expenses or the outdoor dining roof structure. (link)
Also Noticed: Here's a side-by-side look at how all MBB programs currently rank in the NET & RPI structures. We'll update this when possible. (link); Notre Dame will wear gold pants, white tops with "extra-bright gold stitching" and green cleats and gloves in the Cotton Bowl. Take a look. (link); Here is a video of new Virginia Prez Ryan's holiday decorating attempts, took selfies with the likes of Hoos' AD Williams, MBB HC Bennett and more. (link); Illinois MBB letterwinners have donated funds to create a scholarship named for legendary HC Henson and his wife, Mary. (link); Western Carolina will move the start time of today's MBB game against UNC Asheville up 4.5 hours to 1 p.m., and the Track and Field team will not travel to the Clemson Opener due to the weather forecast from Winter Storm Diego. (link); Reports still indicate that former Louisville MBB great Bridgeman is in the lead to buy Sports Illustrated for $150M. A deal announcement could come before 2019. (link); DAZN has acquired Canadian rights to the English Premier League in a three-year deal. (link); Kansas FB student-athlete Williams arrested on suspicion of domestic battery. New HC Miles has suspended the Big 12 Offensive Rookie of the Year pending further investigation. (link)
