Learfield-SBJ IAF (Day 2): Certainly the headlining moment was SEC Commish Sankey's comparison of UCF FB's situation with his league's MBB profile back in 2016, "We weren’t living up to our expectations. Rather than point to the selection committee, other people ... we looked inward and said: ‘How do we adjust to the circumstances around us?’ I would observe that’s the challenge for everybody at the FBS level." Knights AD White's response, "Basketball teams are rewarded for playing tough teams such as UCF through metrics like RPI or NET, while football teams avoid us because they’re concerned about the 'eye test.' [...] As I’ve said many times, we are willing to play any Power Six program in the country. The challenge is that not many are willing to play us." (link); SBJ again with a solid string of video clips from the half-day of programming. (link - scroll down); SBJ's Smith: "One of the quietly interesting scenes at #SBJIAF was watching a Rams representative spread the word that they want to bring college football to new stadium. Looks like Rams want to get into the neutral site business." (link); Here's a solid recap from Diverse Issues in Higher Ed on the conversation between Houston Prez Khator & Tulane Prez Emeritus Cohen from Wednesday. Notable from Khator: "If you’re going to have athletics, have the dream of building a nationally-competitive athletics program because a mediocre athletics program is a liability to the institution. Athletics is one way to build a strong academic institution." More. (link); Personal takeaways from yesterday: Duke Sr. Deputy AD King mentioned 29 current/former ADs have come from the Kevin White tree. 29. Wow. NCAA EVP of Inclusion & Human Resource Albert with a dynamic conversation, lobbies for "courageous leadership," also, "We need to get more proximate with our data. [...] Know the trend data." Wasserman's Jordan believes the Big Ten's coming rights negotiations will end up with the incumbents, Fox/ESPN/BTN, as the winners once again. Sports Media Advisors' Perlman points to Amazon as the biggest future digital player. Stadium's Coyle thinks the "fuse" between OTT & OTA (over the air) is going to change the consumption world significantly. ESPN VP of Programming & Acquisitions Dawson played it safe most of the panel, did say there's so much learning going on with the digital push.
West Coast Conference Commish Nevarez profiled under the header of, "Obligation to Advocate." Nevarez runs through her path of UMass as a WBB student-athlete & later time in the Cal Compliance department where she says during a Christmas party, "...a senior associate — we all, you know, do the side-shoulder hug and take a picture for the photographer — and he reaches around and grabs my behind. I'm shocked. This one I do ... red flags all over my mind." What happened next? "And I still can't believe I did this. Instead, I opted to call that guy into my office. And at the time, I'm in this tiny little tweener office — it really should have been a closet. And we're squeezed in there. And I — you know, in my mind, I'm really bold and sure of voice. But I'm sure, at the time, my voice was shaking. I was stuttering, trying to look him in the eye and just say, 'Look, this happened at the Christmas party. It's not right. I don't deserve to be treated that way. I'm a colleague here, I deserve to be treated with more respect.' [...] It was an empowering moment. Still, when I talk about it now, I think back: 'Wow, if that was a different personality on the other side of the table, that could have gone really, really different.'" More. (link)
The San Jose Mercury News' Wilner gathered emails sent to/from Pac-12 CEOs on the league's FB officiating & media narrative issues. As you'd expect, league ADs were also in many of the chains. Commish Scott, initially to his bosses, "While this is the first time we have encountered this concern and criticism […] and other conferences also involve conference staff in their replay review processes to varying degrees, this misperception and the resulting article is regrettable." Colorado AD George to CU Chancellor DiStefano: "Phil: This is not good. I would love to talk to you about this at your convenience. I have heard from Multiple ADs already this am. Rick." Arizona State's Anderson to Scott: "Tough but appropriate action on your part. Here to support you. Let me know if you need my direct assistance." Scott also provided context to the CEOs on some of the narrative around the league in the media, Oregon State Prez Ray responded, "Thanks for your note and sharing with the group. We’ve got some CEOs new to this environment with angry sports blogger mob, and I’m sure some are more sensitive and reactionary to it. So your not (sic) was very helpful indeed." Washington State Prez Schulz indicated he & his peers could do more to "support the conference with our local media sports reporters." More. (link); The Oregonian's Canzano calls on OSU Prez Ray to "put down the pom poms and start asking questions." (link)
Headline from the Washington Post, "Does sports glory create a spike in college applications? It’s not a slam dunk." National titles & epic wins reviewed at the likes of Oregon, Oklahoma, Auburn, Kentucky, UConn, Alabama, Florida Gulf Coast, Villanova, Clemson, Notre Dame & UMBC. However, the most notable part of this piece is the interface that allows you to pick a school, conference or public/private institution to see freshmen application figures between 2001 & 2017. There goes half my Friday. (link)
The total number of enforced targeting calls in FBS games this year was virtually the exact same as the 2017 season at 179. For 'Power 5' leagues: "SEC (39 in 2018, 27 in 2017); Pac-12 (23, 30); ACC (20, 6); Big Ten (20, 20); Big 12 (10, 12)." B1G & MAC Coordinator of Officials Carollo: "It’s still our No. 1 concern and our one area we need to improve." In FCS play there was a bit of an uptick, from 92 last year to 115 this season. (link)
Put another $6M on the board for Arkansas as the Tyson family once again steps up for the Razorbacks. The new cash will go toward upgrades for the Randal Tyson Track Center, which will include reconfigured seating, new concessions, locker rooms, bathrooms, etc. Total project will cost $15M to $20M. Namesake Tyson Foods chairman notes his family's legacy with the facility that reaches back to its opening in 2000. (link)
Delta has added some flights from NYC & Greenville/Spartanburg to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area for the CFP semifinal that will see Clemson & Notre Dame matchup. In total we're looking at around 1,500 seats. Routes from Birmingham & Oklahoma City to Miami are also in the mix for Delta. (link); Digital leaders from Vanderbilt, Wake Forest & FIU dig in on how they creatively prepared for bowl destination announcements. (link); Check out the MBB Final Four logo for Atlanta in 2020. UAB Assoc. AD for Compliance Bray is headed to Springfield, MO to serve as the new AD at Drury (DII). Official first day: March 18. Bray: "I am a believer in the Division II philosophy of 'Life in the Balance.' Division II emphasizes both athletics and academics – they’re not mutually exclusive. I love the focus on graduating and getting a degree. At the same time, I love the focus on competition, sportsmanship, and the game environment in Division II." (link)
Interim Southern Miss AD Mitchell: "At this point, the objective that has been laid out before us is to do the self-study, and I’m certainly very confident of being able to lead us through that and have great respect for what Dr. Bennett wants to achieve. I’m really going to be focused on that primary goal, which is to evaluate where we are and what’s needed to take us where we want to go." (link)
It's That Time of Year: Michigan AD Manuel says there's no truth to reports FB HC Harbaugh is looking to bolt Ann Arbor & return to the NFL. (link); Michigan offensive analyst & former Kansas State HC Prince is the new boss at Howard. (link); Cal AD Knowlton extends HC Wilcox through the 2023 season. (link); Yahoo's Thamel writes on college HCs who are on the radar of NFL leaders: Oklahoma's Riley, Iowa State's Campbell, Stanford's Shaw (for the 100th year in a row), Michigan's Harbaugh, Northwestern's Fitzgerald, Washington's Petersen, Georgia's Smart, Notre Dame's Kelly, Purdue's Brohm & Baylor's Rhule. (link); More on USA Today's FB AC compensation study as headliner Wolken goes in on how some high-paying ACs can be super picky about their HC options. Arkansas State AD Mohajir: "When a head coach has a good coordinator, they don't want to lose them. At the end of the day, if a guy is making $1.5 million, does he want to come to a Sun Belt or Conference USA school and make $1 million? Do you want to take half the pay to be a head coach?" Lots more. (link)
More Personnel: Sam Houston State AD Williams adds major gift officer from the university's advancement office Martinez as Assoc. AD for External Ops and Development. (link); The Athletic's Auerbach profiles Army FB HC Monken on his family-first approach. Notable: Monken wants his staff to see their kids play high school ball on Friday nights. Allows them to fly to games on Saturday morning. Pretty amazing in our world. (link); Louisiana AD Maggard goes with Trinity (DIII) Men's Soccer AC Key as the new leader of the women's team in Lafayette. (link); NFL EVP for International Endeavors Waller will leave his role at the end of the season. (Audi Field). Sounds like the Cougars will "reap hundreds of thousands of dollars a year" from the deal. (link, link)
Rutgers gets the green light from its Board of Governors to build the new Barbara and Gary Rodkin Academic Success Center. Part of an overall $65M project that also includes a FB game day locker room. Construction to begin in the spring. Also of note, RU has stacked $98.379M to date in its 'R B1G Build' campaign with a goal of $100M. (link); Indiana's new multi-use Wilkinson Hall, which Wrestling & Volleyball will call home, is set to open on the 13th of next month. Look forward to seeing pictures. (link)
Bloomberg's Soshnick reports On Location, home of Anthony Travel, Primesport & other notable brands, may be on the block with Endeavor & Live Nation as potential buyers for a price tag that could be in the $800M range. It's not the first time this type of report has hit the wire. Data: "On Location generates about $600 million in revenue and $55 million in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, one of the people said. About 40 percent of profit is related to the NFL, with 40 percent coming from other sports and 20 percent attributed to music and travel, the person said." (link); Teall Capital adds Complex Sports & Entertainment to its portfolio. Teall chairman Sutton: "Complex is uniquely positioned to help professional sports teams, athletic departments and venue owners maximize the use of their facilities and engage fans year-round like never before." (link)
San Diego AD McGillis talks through some of his MBB scheduling strategy as the Toreros returned a veteran squad & have already beaten the likes of Colorado & San Diego State. McGillis pinged Michigan State Asst. AD for Administration & data guru/KPI creator Pauga to determine "what combination of analytics and pedigree would it take to lasso an at-large." Example: USD had one more opening on its slate, chose to go to Oregon for a tip next week. McGillis: "I told Sam (Scholl - MBB HC), 'Hey, Oregon’s available.' He kind of shook his head and smiled. I asked, 'Do you want to go to the NCAA Tournament next year?' Well, we’ve got to add Oregon, too. Sam said, 'I’m in.'" (link)
North Dakota State FB is undefeated, the top seed in the FCS Playoffs and yet the two smallest home crowds at the Fargodome have come in the post-season. NDSU AD Larsen: "Grateful for all the fans that continue to support us in great numbers compared to other FCS schools. Disappointed in the drop of attendance when you look at the incredible run our team has been on." The Bison drew at least 18,008 for all seven regular season home games, but just 17,007 last Saturday and have 2k tickets left in the 19k-seat facility for tomorrow's quarterfinal tilt with Colgate. More Larsen: "It’s no accident it’s hard for teams to come in here, and when the place is sold out, it has a huge impact on our success. To have 1,500 to 2,000 empty seats, that impacts things." (link)
Terrific exchange between Iowa State fans & Anheuser-Busch on Twitter as the Cyclones are headed to San Antonio for the Alamo Bowl & their preference of Busch Light won't go overlooked. San Jose State AC Luna will be the HC of the beach squad in Nacogdoches, while Volleyball HC Humphreys will continue in that role and serve as director of volleyball, with oversight of the beach VB program. AD Ivey: "We are excited about the opportunity to add Beach Volleyball to our sport offerings. Having Beach Volleyball provides a fun and unique sport that provides another entertainment and student engagement opportunity, while showing our continued commitment to our Title IX plan." (link)

Wherever you are, big town, small town, top of the ladder or the bottom, bloom where you are planted." (link); Akron & Nebraska have settled their cancelled FB kick dispute from earlier this season. (link); Anyone who visited or lived at Clemson from Nov. 21-29 may have been exposed to mumps. South Carolina played the Tigers at Death Valley during that time. (link)
Correction: Clarity on the NCAA penalties at Oregon. Football was not sanctioned. Also, the digital board in question was used inside an equipment room in the football facility rather than Autzen Stadium. Apologies for the confusion.
