NCAA Prez Emmert sees his contract extended through October of 2023 with an option for another year stacked on top. SBJ's Smith, who broke the news, "If Emmert fulfills the length of the new contract, he will have been in the job 14 years, longer than any NCAA chief since Walter Byers (‘51-88)." (link)
Gonzaga MBB HC Few calls on Emmert to be more assertive on the MBB-FBI front, "I’m disappointed. I don’t think this is something the NCAA needs to take their time on. There’s teams out here (Zags-Tennessee) who are competing for Final Fours and national championships and they don’t need to stall this thing out. They need to make decisions and roll with it. I think that’s on Emmert. Emmert needs to step up and be a leader and make some quicker decisions." More: "Everybody’s got a value system and you can either adhere to that value system or not and you let it become compromised. (Illegal recruiting is) just something we don’t do." (link)
SBJ's Smith & Ourand hit the wire with news the AAC is asking some of its members to consider signing a grant of rights that could deliver more cash than other league partners as part of the next major media deal. It's obviously also a hedge against potential 'Power 5' expansion that could gobble up some AAC brands. No specific word on which schools may have been offered the incentive. Of note, "The AAC’s current seven-year, $126 million package with ESPN expires in 2020. A new deal could be three to four times higher, but only if the top AAC schools commit to stay in the conference, sources said." 3x to 4x would equal $6M to $8M per year. (link); Another expansion/realignment nugget that has some people talking is BIG EAST Commish Ackerman's comment of still playing a double round robin basketball slate even if her league grows to 11. (link)
UC Davis AD Blue pens for AthleticDirectorU, "Real Opportunities, Not Just Degrees." Key takeaways: "Even as student-athlete graduation rates climb higher than ever, it is becoming more commonly acknowledged that just graduating is no longer an assurance of career success for modern student-athletes. […] Many young alumni, after a few years of hindsight, often wish that their athletics departments better positioned them for the realities of starting their postgraduate careers. […] The emphasis on eligibility and graduation from the NCAA has led to higher graduation rates and has unquestionably been a good thing, but perhaps has also caused schools to overlook employment outcomes. […] Our intent at UC Davis is to integrate career development into team activities to the same full extent as strength and conditioning or sports medicine. […] We set an ambitious goal which is to ensure every student-athlete is fully prepared to compete as a top candidate for the job or graduate school option of their choice." (link)
Good read from Inside Higher Ed on university & athletics fundraising in the face of scandals. Maryland, Penn State, Baylor, Michigan State, Ohio State all mentioned. Georgia associate professor & former Knight Commission member Suggs: "Most of the time, donors and other stakeholders value competitiveness and the pursuit of excellence more than penitence or corrective action, or even victim support. They want scandals to be over and done with so they can get on with being fans and supporters. So, the Maryland situation seems to be a critical example: Will other donors expect universities to hold themselves deeply accountable for tragedies like the death of Jordan McNair? Or will they try to negotiate settlements and move on? It'll be interesting to see." Ruffalo Noel Levitz VP for Research and Strategy Gawor: "What we find is if the university is standing up and taking responsibility, and is not shy about talking to and listening, really listening, to the alumni, and providing very clear plans as to what they’re doing to address the situation, they will be able to move on from the controversy." More. (link)
Under Armour Senior Director of Marketing Jones, a mainstay for a number of years on the college scene, along with SVP of Global Marketing Kuehl, have exited UA after "an internal review of their department's spending." The move happened last Thursday & WSJ's Safdar adds, "The funds at issue included events, gifts to athletes and nights out, the people said, and some were costs that were approved in previous years." As you may recall, Jones left UA for CAA back in 2014, only to return to Baltimore in 2016. (link)
UCLA MBB student-athlete Hill opens up to The Athletic's Davis on his transgression in China last season as one of the three Bruins whose shoplifting landed them in a foreign jail, but more importantly as a young student-athlete with a history of anxiety & panic attacks. Hill: "Right away I was thinking, I’m dumb, I got caught, I shouldn’t have done that. All the things I should have been thinking about when I was doing the stupid thing I was doing. […] It’s a hard thing to tell someone that you have anxiety problems. Just like it’s hard to do conditioning in basketball. But you know you’re gonna need it when you get in the game. […] I’m more a guy who thinks, I’ll get it done by myself. Sometimes that’s not always the best thing. That’s why there’s other people in the world, so you can talk to them." (link)
Latest SBJ, continued: For the first time in bowl game history a corn hole game is part of the student-athlete gift package (Cheez-It Bowl). Electronics & watches, as usual, prime on the lists of many games. Personalized bobbleheads are another new snazzy gift. Full list here. (link); Deep look at how the facilities makeover game continues to play out to better cater to the modern fan. Houston AD Pezman provides interesting context, "It’s like a moving event. They want to see the building, they want to see the game. They want to go socialize with their friends." Atlanta Hawks COO Sheely: "People don’t want to be enclosed or cloistered into these little boxes any more. They want a great view. They want to be part of the action. They also want to be able to move around and watch the game on their terms." Lots more. (link); How about female fans specifically? Gotta address long restroom wait times, some 'bubble bars' are popping up with wine & champagne, "Instagram-able" murals, local food flavor, more apparel options, child-friendly points throughout venues. (link)
The first KPI rankings are out with Kansas, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio State & Gonzaga in the Top 5. Non-high-majors in the Top 25 are Buffalo at 13, Belmont at 18, St. Louis at 24. (link); Updated NET rankings have Michigan, Virginia, Duke, Texas Tech & Tennessee in the Top 5. Buffalo is at 12, San Francisco at 21. (link)

It's That Time of Year: Kansas State AD Taylor phones North Dakota State HC Klieman, literally, for the open post in Manhattan. Six-year deal starts at $2.3M, increases by $200K annually. (link, link); Northern Arizona AD Marlow goes with Memphis DC Ball. (link); Drake HC Fox steps down, "It just really felt like it’s time. And time for what? That’s the thing that, honestly, you guys are going to have a hard time believing, because we don’t know what. But we know we’re going forward in God’s leading. There’s no other way to put it — and we’re excited about that, and we know we can entrust ourselves in him in that." (link); New Georgia Tech HC Collins got a seven-year deal as Yellow Jackets AD Stansbury believes "shifting the offense and its personnel away from Johnson’s option offense will take time." Looks to be $2.5M to $3M base per year. (link); Former Colorado HC MacIntyre lands as DC at Ole Miss. Will get $1.5M annually for three years, part of $4.9M overall including his buyout pay from Boulder. (link); Fox Sports' Feldman clarifies that Troy HC Brown's buyout is $300K & about to be $200K, not the $3M some had reported. (link)
The Athletic's Vannini digs in on underrated factors that lead to HC moves or decisions. 1) Airport accessibility as divorced HCs mention ease & ability of getting to see their kids, others note the importance in recruiting. 2) Community/size of city. Cost of living is a big point, but also recruiting to a market with lots to do. 3) Family. Troy HC Brown: "A lot of coaches defer to our wives on the day-to-day. My wife was a teacher, so one thing she really pays attention to are the school systems. That’s a huge factor. 4) Stability in the AD chair & alignment with administration. 5) State taxes/benefits. 6) Weather. 7) The NFL. One unnamed G5 AC, "You’re not worried about chasing kids down for study hall, worried about losing a recruit, academics. The nice thing about the NFL, it’s pure football all the time." (link)
More Personnel: Missed this one last week as Endeavor On Campus named former IMG College VP Parsons as COO. (link); Boston College AD Jarmond on the hunt for a new Women's Soccer HC as former leader Foley resigns after 22 years to pursue other opportunities. (link); UTEP AD Senter goes with Texas Southern Women's Soccer HC Balogun to lead the Miners' program. (link); New Mexico State Baseball HC Green extended through 2022. (link); D1Baseball's Rogers believes as of today the vote would be split on a paid third assistant for college baseball staffs. (link); Endeavor promotes headliner Shapiro to Prez. (link); The Big Ten Network has a new Prez in SVP/GM of Fox Sports Ohio and SportsTime Ohio McGillicuddy. (link)
With talk starting to bubble on the Big Ten's potential of removing divisions to get FB title game matchups with the best two squads, SB Nation's Cassillo takes a look at the ACC if it were to do the same. Cassillo identifies the three consistent 'rivals' for each brand, as well as what their league slates would look like in even & odd years. Cassillo: " of the biggest pushbacks on the whole idea is the idea that there could be a three-way tie between teams that didn’t face one another. And that’s true, sure. But there are easy enough fixes for this: Record versus common opponents and/or College Football Playoff rankings." (link)
TV/OTT: NBC Sports Network & FS1 will both surpass ESPN2 in overall viewing this calendar year. The Winter Olympics & World Cup are part of the story, but it's the first time since 1993 'The Deuce' won't finish #2 behind the mothership of ESPN. (link); The New York Post reports the 22 Disney RSNs will not be sold together as was ultimately desired. "Sinclair Broadcasting, in partnership with private equity firm CVC Capital Partners, is the only known serious party that has made an offer for all the RSNs — but sources said it was a lowball bid." (link); Notable from BTIG Research's Greenfield, "Initial BamTech loss guidance for Disney’s fiscal 2018 was $130 million on the year-end fiscal 2017 earnings call and was increased to $180 million on the fiscal Q2 2018 (March) earnings call just ahead of ESPN+’s launch. […] Also worth noting that Disney has stated that ESPN+ (BamTech) losses would increase $100 million in fiscal (Dec) Q1 2019, but has not guided to what happens when UFC costs begin to hit their P&L in fiscal (Mar) Q2 2019." (link)
Auburn AD Greene inks to Tigers faithful after a year in the chair on The Plains, "The duty to lead a large and complex organization with integrity that simultaneously operates as a business and an enterprise is an awesome undertaking. My charge is to enhance the experience of 550 student-athletes, maintain a balanced budget, create a vibrant departmental culture, communicate effectively to all constituents and provide fan experiences of a lifetime. That said, this overarching responsibility is not without its challenges. To use a baseball analogy, we do not hit a home run every at-bat. A very real example of this is the most recent football season. Simply put, it did not go as planned. […] Since the conclusion of the regular season, there has been speculation about the future of Auburn Football despite my previous public comments as well as statements from President Leath. Unfortunately, those rumors and speculation have not served the Auburn Family well. […] We have the most passionate fan base in the country, who love Auburn and all it represents. You, the fans, are the driving force in our effort to make you proud. Of course, it stings when we fall short of our lofty expectations, but in true Auburn fashion, we will dust ourselves off and recommit to our goals." More. (link)
"They’re an FCS school, but the facilities and everything is just like a Power Five school. They have the big stadium, the locker room has LED lights in the lockers, everything is just beautiful." That's one James Madison FB recruit on the digs in Harrisonburg. Dukes' AD Bourne in response: "We’ve got something very special that students want to come and be a part of and that’s made up of a culmination of all their experiences. How good is that food in the dining hall? What type of experience do they have in the classroom? What did they think about the overall impression that the faculty and the support staff have had on them while they were here? That’s why the balance outside of athletics is so important. The fact that [recruits] see the university building new dorms, the fact that they see new buildings going up. Just the commitment of the institution to overall excellence for the student body, that’s a comprehensive element that not all schools have." Bourne sees the future as "bright" and his goal is to sustain JMU's success. More. (link)
Charleston Southern expects to vacate more victories in Baseball, Women's Soccer, Women's Tennis, Track & Cross Country as a result of its NCAA issues. This, on top of previous announcements for FB, MBB & Softball. The latter of those already impacted includes wiping out 53 wins across the 2015 & 2016 season. Core issue: "The ineligibility issues discovered dealt primarily with junior college transfers who were allowed to play despite a lack of complete certification of transferred courses. In a few instances, athletes who were not taking the NCAA required 12 hours of study during their respective seasons also were permitted to play." (link)
LEAD1 continues the repackaging of its annual conference as those in attendance comment on "what it was like to be a part of the largest gathering of FBS athletic directors." Penn State's Barbour, outgoing Vandy boss Williams, UNLV's Reed-Francois, North Texas' Baker, Texas' Del Conte, USF's Kelly, Utah State's Hartwell, Pitt's Lyke, New Mexico State's Moccia, others, all on video. (link)
Also Noticed: Texas A&M MBB will not travel to Boston College next year for what would have been the back half of a home-and-home series if the Eagles had made it to College Station over the weekend. (link); Syracuse AD Wildhack indicates the Orange sold 70% of their allotment to the Camping World Bowl in the first week, "Our fans will travel." (link); The Indiana Board of Trustees granted approval to renovate the grandstand at Bill Armstrong Stadium, home of the Hoosiers' soccer programs. Plans include a new 21K square-foot space with locker rooms, lobby, team room, coaches' offices, conference rooms and more. (link); Gaming Nation, Inc. has a new name: "Ascend FS," so named because it "reflects the success of the fast-growing software technology company and its increasingly prominent position within the sports and entertainment gaming sector." (link); The NBA League Pass pricing points continue to fluctuate, currently: Single Game: $6.99, Final 3 Quarters: $4.99, Second Half: $2.99 and Fourth Quarter: $1.99 (link); Missouri FB student-athlete Williams arrested on suspicion of second-degree domestic assault. HC Odom has suspended Williams from all team activities. (link)
