Maryland has appointed acting AD Evans to the position on a permanent basis, which will mark Evans' second stint as a 'Power 5' AD following a six-year run at GeorgiaBaltimore Sun columnist Markus calls this a "second chance" for Evans, who said in a news release yesterday: "Since the day I arrived, I have been inspired by the student-athletes, coaches and support team that strive for success in Maryland Athletics. ... I’m guided by the principle that we learn from our wins and losses, and I am eager to lead an athletics department that ultimately achieves greatness together." Support is not universal on campus, however, as wrestling student-athlete Smith, a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the Athletic Council, which advised Prez Loh on the hiring, says some of the issues his group raised were not addressed. "We had talked to Loh because we felt some of the decisions weren’t made in the best interest of the the student-athletes. To find out that something like this happened, it’s not only like they’re saying, 'We don’t care.' It’s, 'We don’t care even more now.'" Loh cited Evans' "institutional fit" as a factor in his hiring, adding: "Throughout his tenure here, Damon has demonstrated visionary, transparent, compassionate and ethical leadership." (link, link)
During yesterday's introductory presser, Fresno State Prez Castro indicated that freshly minted AD Tumey's first interview with the Bulldogs in 2014 stuck with him, saying: "I liked him a lot then. He's even stronger today than he was then and I think he's exactly what we need right now." Castro also cited Tumey's experience as a student-athlete, coach and as a sitting AD. "All that together with his personality we thought he was the best candidate." Moving into his new position, Tumey said one of his first priorities will be to fill a key development position that has been vacant for six months. "We need a rainmaker here. ... He doesn't need to be ostentatious and showy, glitzy. He needs to be real and earthy and tangible and something that people can believe in." Donations have remained relatively flat at $7M annually over the last four years. (link); According to Fresno Bee columnist Warszawski, the hiring of Tumey will allow Prez Castro to return to focusing on what he's done best during his time in Fresno: elevate the university's academic profile. While Castro has excelled in that area, Warszawski notes that his decisions concerning athletics have left more than a little to be desired, especially approving a contract for former FB HC DeRuyter that included a guaranteed base salary. "Which is why Fresno State is paying DeRuyter more than $1M to be Cal's defensive coordinator." (link)
Meanwhile, down in Tampa it sounds like the committee assisting with the AD search for USF will forward a final name for consideration by Prez Genshaft by the middle of next week. Committee chair & notable sports management professor Sutton points to a leader who can strategically align the Bulls for the next round of conference realignment, but also frames the situation with, "No dirty laundry. That's important…To do anything to undermine (USF's status as a preeminent university) would be crazy. We're going to be in a position where we're going to do the right thing for the right reasons, and that's what we're going to do." took a look at the potential candidacy of former Louisville AD Jurich, which in light of Sutton's comments makes you stop & wonder. (link, link); Tampa Bay Times' Knight says former Arkansas boss Long is also "getting serious consideration" for the post on Fowler Avenue. Knight indicates some prominent boosters still favor Jurich. (link)
Middle Tennessee State has hired former UT Chattanooga AD Blackburn to serve as Senior Assoc. AD for External Affairs. MTSU AD Massaro: "It was an easy decision to hire a person the caliber of David Blackburn. ... David has a background in fundraising, which is always a big need for our department, and his external skills are off the charts. He will be a perfect fit for us." Despite a budget reduction at UTC in 2015-16, Blackburn managed to increase the department's surplus from $650K to $1M. Blackburn: "It's a wonderful opportunity that presented itself and I am thrilled to be joining the Middle Tennessee staff. Hopefully, together, we can continue to advance Blue Raider athletics." (link)
In a letter sent last week, Connecticut Prez Herbst didn't mince words to former MBB HC Ollie, asserting that if any of the program's alleged NCAA violations under his watch were inadvertent, "your failure to identify them as violations and report them after the fact suggests either a knowing disregard for your compliance obligations or a gross inability to satisfy them." Herbst's letter backs up AD Benedict's decision to part ways with Ollie for just cause, and the matter of whether Ollie will be owed the $10M remaining on his contract will now go to arbitration. Representatives for Ollie have attempted to refute several allegations against Ollie and argued that others don't rise to the level of just cause. In addition, they note that several similar violations committed by other coaches have not resulted in a termination of employment. Herbst, in turn, noted that due to the circumstances under which Ollie was hired (namely, recent sanctions imposed during the tenure of former HC Calhoun), she and former AD Manuel separately and emphatically stressed the importance of compliance. "None [of the other coaches] were given the same specific direction upon hire that Mr. Manuel and I gave you." (link)
The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago has upheld a lower court ruling that requiring student-athletes who transfer to sit out a year does not violate federal antitrust laws. Lawyers for former Northern Illinois FB student-athlete Deppe, who brought the suit, had argued that the NCAA rule is designed to maintain the quality of play and consequently maintain revenues, constituting an unreasonable restraint on trade. In its unanimous rejection, the 7th Circuit accepted the NCAA's position that allowing direct transfers would undermine the "amateur character of college athletics." (link)
The MBB programs at Villanova and Loyola-Chicago are already reaping the spoils of victory following their Final Four and national championship NCAA Tournament runs this spring. From March 1-April 2, Loyola saw an increase in web traffic, with 91% of visitors logging onto the site for the first time. The Ramblers also enjoyed a 660% increase in athletic donations along with a 34% increase in social media followers accompanied by a whopping 1676% increase in engagement. Meanwhile, 875K new visitors logged onto the Villanova website from March 11-April 5, an increase of 108% over the previous year. In 2018, Villanova has averaged 40K visits to its .edu site per day, but that number soared to 175K during the title game. That engagement, at least in the case of Villanova, has also translated into increased interest in admissions. In 2016, the school received over 17K admissions for its fall class. In the following cycle, after the NCAA title game, that number jumped to over 21K, although the relationship could be as correlative as it is causal. Villanova was elevated to the Doctoral Universities category by the Carnegie Foundation in the same year. (link)

The DreamChaser Tour included a group of 25 European prospective FB student-athletes who visited a number of college campuses & took part in camps as part of Premier Players International's exposure junket. One veteran FBS AC who saw the cohort at a camp, "The European guys have a great upside. They are very raw in most cases but have God-given ability." "Of the 25 players on the tour, 12 returned home with FBS offers," from the likes Virginia Florida, as well as potentially Ohio State & Georgia. The internationalization of college FB is here. (link)

Northwestern boss & AD of the Year-winner Phillips gets a big spread in SBJ. Current UConn Deputy AD Cegles is credited with getting Phillips into administration back when he was on the MBB staff at Arizona State. Cegles: "Jimmy just has this special way of connecting with people. He makes people feel like their conversation is the most important one of the day. I thought that would translate well to fundraising." Big Ten boss Delany on Phillips' arrival in Evanston, "I saw his energy, but I couldn’t have predicted the 360 degrees of success they’ve had. He has fostered a belief that academic reputation can be an advantage." NU Deputy AD Blais, "I tell people when they come in to interview, 'Are you ready to put on your sneakers and run next to the athletic director?' That’s the pace he keeps. He’s going to yank this place forward. He’s a builder, he enjoys the process of trying to get to the top. It drives him." (link); More on Phillips & the bike accident he suffered at the age of 13 that broke both of his femurs, "It changed my life forever, for the better. God was with me then and now, and has never left my side." (link); And how about the staff at Notre Dame when Phillips was raising money in South Bend? Penn State AD Barbour, North Carolina boss Cunningham, Stanford's Muir, Marquette AD Scholl, Army West Point's Corrigan, Florida State's Wilcox, Bradley AD Reynolds, Auburn's Greene & Minnesota-Duluth's Berlo all crossed paths on the Fighting Irish staff. Muir: "Kevin (White) deserves a lot of credit for delegating, letting us learn, grow, fail. And not only that, but he changed up responsibilities quite a bit on us. We’d go from one topic to another, and that gave us a broader view of our athletic department and prepared us for our roles now." (link)
SBJ, cont.: IMG Learfield Ticket Solutions boss Sine has exited to lead AXS in Los Angeles. Sine: "I wasn’t looking to leave [IMG Learfield], but as this opportunity emerged and I dug into it more, it became very clear this was a big chance to join a world-class organization and build upon what they’ve already done in the space." A statement from IMGL expresses confidence in SVP Sexton "and the entire continue the tremendous progress we have made." (link); MoffetNathanson's namesake believes the new Time Warner could go after some college FB rights. (link); Here's a bunch of good data on AD trends, like the Northeast Conference leading the way in average tenure at 11.7 years & the Mountain West having the shortest at 3.4. Overall, we're up to 85 ADs who are either female or minority males. (link)
San Jose State Senior Assoc. AD for Academic & Student Services/SWA Daley chat with @1.Questions' @TaiMBrown. Daley, who is also the Spartans Deputy Title IX Coordinator, touches on her time across campus to gain experience managing a team and to diversify her profile. Daley: "It is important to let our Student-Athletes know that we have to make an effort with campus to assimilate to collaborate and partner with them. We can't just expect everyone to come to our games and support us without us returning the favor. […] One of the biggest tools I was able to bring back to athletics was a greater understanding of the benefits of our campus as a whole." More. (link)
Now here's something interesting...Oakland is offering a subscription-based season ticket model for alums who graduated in 2009 or after. The math works out to $180 in total, which can be paid over 12, 9, or 6 months, or all up front. Includes MBB, WBB, Men's & Women's Soccer, Volleyball, Men's & Women's Track & Field, as well as Men's & Women's Swim & Dive. Total value pegged at $600 for the 60 to 70 home contests within the package. (link)
Massive move in Softball as Oregon HC White is headed to Austin to take over the Texas program. Reports indicate White will get a five-year deal that will make him the second-highest paid coach in the nation, only behind Oklahoma's Gasso & her $925K annual stack. White: "I wouldn’t leave if I didn’t think I had a chance to build a new program and the ability to win a national championship. Texas was the right one." White also indicates Ducks brass didn't try to counter the offer from UT boss Del Conte, who adds, "I really wanted a grinder. […] They were perennially dead last when he got there. They were god awful." (link)

(link); Come July, the long-awaited new deal for Clemson MBB HC Brownell should be official as AD Radakovich says "we're very nearly done." The San Jose Mercury News' Wilner compares the Pac-12's media rights revenue over the next six years to every other 'Power 5' league using "comparable rates of increase across all conferences." Big Ten members will receive ~$105M more than Pac-12's over the next six years. SEC: ~51M more. Big 12: ~$27M more. ACC: ~$10M more. Wilner, of course, points to the value of the Pac-12 Networks & the league's Tier I rights hitting the marketplace in the early 20s, "...the future value of Pac-12 content will be inexorably tied to football success … and football success depends on resources … and resources are linked, in part, to conference distributions. In other words, the revenue deficit facing athletic departments over the next six years could adversely affect the football product to such an extent that the conference doesn’t get max value for the content. That’s not necessarily the likely outcome, but it cannot be discounted as a possibility." (link)
Southern Miss AD Gilbert with his second To The Top piece, this one about his experience joining the student-athletes in the Leadership Academy for an Outward Bound trip at Lake Superior for a week. Rock climbing, camping and hiking were all part of the experience. Gilbert passes the pen to Program Leader Bevillard, who recounts the week via journal entries. Biggest lessons learned: 1) Positive Attitude Impacts Others; 2) We Can Do a Lot with a Little; 3)Challenges Reveal Our Character; 4) We Can Cope with Discomfort; and 5)The Company We Keep Matters. South Alabama is asking fans and supporters to turn out and voice support for a new FB stadium at this morning's Mobile City Council and Mobile County Commission meetings. USA is asking the county for $5M and the city for $10M to support the $75M project, and this week it released new renderings which depict, among other things, "The Club," an 800-seat area with access to climate-controlled room with food and drinks. Renderings also show the South Terrace, which has standing room near field level and can be converted into a concert area. AD Erdmann: "It's much more than a simplistic football stadium to watch a game. It's designed to be a very social environment and a very social atmosphere. We want to have that flexibility to where we can demonstrate that we're doing more than just 6 or 7 game days throughout the year." (link, link)
Pace of play in college Baseball hits the New York Times & gosh if this isn't an eye-opener from Omaha, "The 13 games leading up to the championship series averaged 3 hours 30 minutes, a 25-minute increase over where it was just two years ago. If that average holds, it will be the second-longest in the event’s history, trailing only the record average of 3:38 set in 2009." Regular season average: Two hours & fifty-nine minutes. Post-season: Three hours & eighteen minutes. South Carolina AD & Committee chair Tanner points to coaches radioing in pitches as one culprit, "We don’t want to take out the purity of the game, a little cat-and-mouse that goes on between managers or the guy in the bullpen or the guy on deck. We’ve got to leave that part in the game. But we’ve got to keep playing. We’ve got to keep the game moving." (link)
Arizona State and Tailgate Guys partner. Sun Devils AD Anderson: "We are thrilled to be able to offer our fans new ways to enhance their gameday experience. As the development of the land surrounding Sun Devil Stadium continues and our gameday parking evolves, it is imperative we are able to create alternative options for our fans to have a fun, safe and exciting environment." Season ticket holders gets first dibs on the new services before becoming available to all fans on July 5. New parking spaces around Sun Devil Stadium will be used, so no previously assigned spots will be displaced. (link)

The Athletic's O'Neil asks a really good question, why does new Memphis MBB HC & former NBA All-Star Hardaway feel like he has more to prove to his hometown? Well, more directly, "Why would a beloved man who is worth millions take a job that requires actual work and could tarnish his reputation?" O'Neil walks with Hardaway through his path to stardom for the Tigers as a student-athlete, a path full of hardship. "Having to live in a community where you see trash all over the ground, it’s normal. You see broken-down homes. It’s normal. You see drug dealers. It’s normal. You see a shooting. It’s normal. You see men beating women. It’s normal. You see women selling their bodies. It’s normal. It’s never like, oh, wow. Look at that. It’s like that every day. Nothing is out of bounds. This is what you see all the time. This is life and it affects you." There's lots more, like Hardaway surviving his first April recruiting period & the confession, "I’m anxious. Anxious but not nervous. I want to see what I’m made of." Well done by O'Neil. (link)
