Deadspin's McKenna with a super long look at the feud between former George Washington AD Nero & former Colonials MBB HC Lonergan that eventually led both out of Foggy Bottom. The piece includes pictures & video of Nero allegedly fraternizing with recently graduated GW student-athletes, reports of Nero giving some student-athletes nominal amounts of cash out of his own pocket, consistently being intoxicated on a MBB trip to Italy & much more. Further, Lonergan looks to have gone to former university Prez Knapp to complain about Nero's behavior & involvement as the piece also recounts details around Lonergan's departure, which happened before Nero stepped aside. Around a month ago Nero was communicating with Deadspin about a statement, which he indicated would need to be coordinated with the university, but no such statement ever came. There's lots of anonymous comments both defending & blaming both former leaders. (link)
Air Force FB HC Calhoun believes the Falcons need to hire a new AD who's been in the chair before. Calhoun: "I think it's crucial. And at the FBS level. You get somebody who comes here just because they've been at a strong academic school, it's going to be a different language. Or somebody who was highly distinguished in missiles of flying F-16s or great, great servants to the country to come in here, even if you aren't a football player, I think you just aren''s apples and oranges when there's any kind of dialogue." More: "Just leadership-wise, you have somebody that truly understands the dynamics involved with each sport. There's where it helps having somebody where their craft, or their trade, the quality of communication that you have with your chain of command; their background has almost solely been in intercollegiate athletics. I think that's crucial for the United States Air Force Academy, that that conversation occurs." (link)
247Sports' ECU outlet lead reporter Igoe, "I know there's been no scheduled second meeting for the AD search committee. Much like the basketball search, the committee seems like a sham in the early going. After the initial search committee meeting on Friday, Nov. 2, committee members haven't been told when the next meeting will be, or if there will even be a second get-together." (link)
Maryland: The Baltimore Sun's Barker reports former Terps FB HC Durkin was able to still direct the program via communication with ACs during his suspension. Barker says Durkin reviewed game tape & put together game plans. Durkin also allegedly told the USM regents his continued involvement was approved by UMD AD Evans. (link); WaPo's Maese chronicles comments from a special hearing on how the FB situation was handled. The board's vote to reinstate Durkin was not unanimous, but no further details on the vote's specifics. Prez Loh indicates 40% of the Walter's report recommendations have already been put into place. Loh also confirms he told the board "all hell will break loose" if they reinstated Durkin. More. (link)
Washington State FB sits at 9-1 (6-1) heading into tomorrow's kick with Arizona & still has an outside shot at making the College Football Playoff. Cougars AD Chun says he's not going to let this opportunity pass by, plans to leverage FB's success to make sure WSU can reinvest in facility upgrades. Chun: "The stadium renovation and the operations center helped modernize us, but we need a new indoor practice field. It’s a reinvestment. If you want to sustain success, reinvestment has to happen annually." Four sellouts will buoy the bottom line & fundraising dollars this fiscal year are expected to surpass the previous high of $7.6M. More: "College football is a huge opportunity for universities because it’s all about connecting people. We’ve got a lot of opportunity with the success we’re having." (link)
The Texas A&M Board of Regents officially approved new Texas A&M-Corpus Christi AD Palumbo's appointment. Palumbo inked for AthleticDirectorU on his path to the island & his vision for the department. Palumbo runs through markers in his upbringing that instilled core values of a blue collar work ethic, a sense of team & a will to compete. Points to VCU AD McLaughlin, Western Carolina boss Eaton & Atlantic 10 Executive Assoc. Commish Gill as mentors who showed him how to be himself, the importance of clear communication & maintaining a steady demeanor. Palumbo: "From my time at Virginia Commonwealth, I bring a blueprint for how to foster and sustain success, grow a brand and generate revenue to promote the best possible student-athlete experience. […] We are Islanders, but we will not be an island; we will be a part of the main." (link)
Kentucky rolls out more information on the coming renovations to Rupp Arena, starting with a neat cross-section graphic of how the facility is set to change. The "Exterior Refresh" & "Iconic Facade" are particularly notable for its glass & metal elements. Season ticket holders in the upper level will go through a reseating process after this season. New club areas, "will not be tied to seat locations and will not have a direct view of the court or access to the seating bowl." A virtual venue solution coming in February to allow fans to see seats from all angles. (link)
Facilities, cont.: UC Davis announces plans to build a $40M student-athlete performance center to include training space, sports med, an academic support hub, sport offices, a natural grass practice field & more. The largest gift in Aggies history is part of the roughly $36M already raised. Two rendering pics included. (link); Arkansas is clear to move forward on a new Baseball clubhouse ($20M-$25M), a renovation to the indoor track digs ($15M-$20M) & another $8M to $10m for a new Track support building. Hogs AD Yurachek says he's working on securing lead gifts for each, "In an ideal world, we'd start construction on all three projects in the fall of 2019." Observation: It's eye-opening how much money some SEC departments are investing in Baseball facilities. (link); New Hampshire AD Scarano indicates the new Soccer & LAX stadium in Durham is on schedule & will see turf down in time for the Spring. Northwestern has already sold-out of its 10K ticket allotment for the Big Ten FB Championship Game. (link); Xavier MBB's trip to Hawaii for the high-profile Maui Jim Maui Invitational has been years, if not decades, in the making. Musketeers Assoc. AD for Basketball Administration Mercurio notes that XU came really close to inking two other times, but couldn't quite get to the finish line. Former South Carolina/Wake Forest HC Odom serves as a one-man selection committee for the event, says he starts by choosing a team from each 'Power 5' league, plus the Big East, then looks for "who's hot," saves a spot for Gonzaga when it's eligible to return, works Chaminade into the mix every other year. USA Today's Wolken thinks innovative & forward-looking leaders around the industry, not a series of crazy regular season game outcomes that end up leaving out some big names, will have to drive expansion changes for the College Football Playoff. Wolken's core question: "At this point, in fact, the only league that can reasonably say a four-team field is more beneficial to its interests than eight is the SEC. So why does it feel like we are still several years away from having a serious discussion about a better way to do this?" Wolken argues all the reasons against expansion (academic calendar, bowl experience, etc.) can be creatively overcome, later points to the eventual retirements of Big Ten Commish Delany, ACC boss Swofford & Big 12 leader Bowlsby, "’s going to take a new, younger group of administrators running the system to see how much potential they’re currently wasting. And at some point, that will happen." (link)
Yahoo's Forde profiles the "most impactful man in a suit" around college FB, notable Arkansas-based lawyer Mars, who has been specifically influential in situations at Ole Miss & Michigan. Interestingly, when Mars initially engaged with the family of current UM student-athlete & former Rebels quarterback Patterson, he thought the project would only take three to five billable hours, "In hindsight, that was the biggest math mistake of my career. This turned into a full-time project. I told everyone, 'This is first-and-goal at the 3-yard-line. We’re good here.' That might have been an overstatement of my confidence level." Mars on the outcome, "It was one of the most challenging, exhausting, high-risk things I’ve ever undertaken as a lawyer. But it’s given me more personal satisfaction than some of the big jury verdicts I’ve won." More. (link)
In a move that could very well indicate there's more to come for former LSU/Oklahoma State FB HC Miles, the Mad Hatter agreed to a one-time lump payment of $1.5M to square away the rest of the $6.5M he was owed by the Tigers. Bayou Bengals AD Alleva: "It's time for both parties to move forward. One of the challenges of the buyout that was in place was there just wasn't a lot of incentive to move on to other things. We were looking to provide that and Coach Miles and his representatives also were ready. It was a mutually agreed upon goal and a very positive process from beginning to end." (link)
Even while Purdue FB HC Brohm said there's no truth to reports he's already accepted the opening at his alma mater, Louisville, USA Today's Estes takes a look at other HCs who have gone home & had significant success. Georgia AD McGarity: "You can check the boxes on what it's like on campus, the community, all the family-type things. […] You shouldn't have to beg somebody to come home." While Dawgs HC Smart says he didn't have the dream of leading the same program for which he played, Ole Miss boss Luke points to that as the driving force behind his ascension. Can you name the 12 'Power 5' FB HCs leading their alma maters? (linklink)
Louisiana AD Maggard reviews costs associated with fans attending Ragin' Cajuns games, but clearly notes, "We are trying to build a program. and it takes resources to do so. Every dollar we earn gets invested directly into our student-athletes and our sport programs, whether it’s enhancing a sport budget or adding a nutrition program or building better facilities. ... We cannot be content with the status quo. And we are constantly looking for ways to improve all of our sport programs." Maggard also says he's going to dig in on engaging with student groups on campus to win more of their support with attendance at games. UL FB attendance sits at a 19,277 average this year, down from 29,171 in 2011. (link, link, link)
More Personnel: Penn AD Calhoun will take over as chair of the NCAA's Strategic Vision & Planning Committee. (link); Miami (FL) AD James on his evaluation of the Canes FB program, "I talk with coach about what we’re looking at and what needs to change. I’m not going to get into what we need in assistants. Whether you’re the head coach to the athletic director to working out in the real world, you have to identify the strengths that you need around you, understanding what you need in your team and if I start picking teams for people it’s not going to work out." (link); Marshall AD Hamrick will hire a new Women's Volleyball HC. (link); The Minnesota Twins hire Arkansas AC Johnson as its big league Pitching Coach. Multi-year deal, play believed to be more than $350K. New Turnkey Search Managing Director & General Manager Alessandri chats with 1.Question on dynamic changes occurring around the media landscape. Alessandri, who spent over 20 years at ESPN, the last three as Chief of Staff, and another handful in executive management at Univision, reviews the interesting business developments surrounding legalized sports gambling, the importance of understanding the "rails" on which streaming content is delivered, how he plans to build Turnkey's business in the space, the deep pockets of FAANG companies at they apply to rights fees, how every brand is its own media entity & the need to truly embrace the opportunity. UIC gets a 15-year naming deal done with Credit Union 1 for rights to the UIC Pavilion. It's worth $9.3M, but here's the kicker, "The deal also contains a provision not commonly seen in naming rights agreements for college facilities: a $750,000 contribution toward scholarships at UIC." UIC Chancellor Amiridis: "In today’s environment, public universities need to be more entrepreneurial in all aspects of their operation and this means expanding partnerships with the private sector." (link)
Wild Fires: Continued danger & air quality issues from the fires in California result in a number of game postponements, including tonight's Cal Poly at Sacramento State MBB matchup. (link); Arizona State MBB was supposed to play at San Francisco, then the programs looked at tipping in Tempe, will now find a date in the future. (link); Ohio State WBB at Sacramento State also postponed. (link); Detroit Mercy MBB at Cal is cancelled. (link); Looks like the NCAA Men's Soccer Tourney matchup between Pacific & UC Riverside got moved to Fresno Pacific (DII) yesterday. The Tigers won 1-0. The New Mexico Attorney General's Office is taking a look at the financial records of former New Mexico AD Krebs' wife. Core inquiry, "...seeking information about a large payment she made from her bank account to a credit card her husband used to make a $25,000 donation." Krebs' attorney continues to remind that his client never denied making the $25K contribution, nor is it "illegal, unethical or improper." (link)
The American Press's Berry believes its time for McNeese State to take a strong look at moving up to the FBS ranks. Berry: "A possible 2021 move would allow for multiple things: marketing and building excitement in Lake Charles. And the inevitable time it will take to renovate Cowboy Stadium and the surrounding facilities to make it FBS-worthy. […] I think this should happen because it will bring back some old rivalries with new names (UL-Lafayette and UL-Monroe) if McNeese went to the Sun Belt. […] No more realistic shot at a national championship. But playing to make it to a bowl game hasn’t been a buzzkill to Group of Five schools for recruiting." (link)
TV/OTT: Traditional broadcast networks continue doling out big cash for sports & 'Power 5' commissioners should be a pretty happy bunch this morning after yesterday's news that Fox was extending its Major League Baseball deal at a ~51% premium. Overall: Seven years at $5.1B or $728.6M annually. DAZN, led by former ESPN boss Skipper, also gets in the mix with a live look-in product launching with MLB next season. (link); Speaking of ESPN, the Worldwide leader is expanding its coverage of Women's college Gymnastics this season to include 30 meets. (link); BeIN says it's going to spend less on sports rights until piracy around the industry can be addressed. (link)

(link); Louisville MBB student-athlete King denies receiving money from runner Dawkins: "Obviously I didn't get any money from him. I didn't know him personally. (link); A seriously impressive dance stunt by some fans in the West Virginia stands last weekend. Certainly one way to stay warm. (link); Definitely think some college athletics brands could pull this off as the San Francisco 49ers will open their first branded gym next week in San Jose. 49ers FIT features branded equipment, a recovery lounge and indoor turf training field inside 36,500 square feet. Membership starts at $49/month... see what they did there? (link); Basketball Times polled SIDs at the six major conferences and though results are still out on one conference, so far only Seton Hall, Duke, Syracuse and Michigan State still have open locker room media policies for MBB home games. (link); Michigan State Asst. AD and KPI numbers guru Pauga: "Mathematically, the single most important game on a D-I MBB team’s schedule is the quarterfinal of an 8-team MTE tournament. Not only does a team win or lose that game, but the result dictates the quality of opponents in the next two, a whopping 20-27% of a non-conf schedule."
