Part two of The News & Advance's interview with Liberty AD McCaw focuses on fundraising and facilities, and the former is trending up, according to McCaw, who notes that suites at Williams Stadium are already sold out for the upcoming FB season. Meanwhile, club seats are on track to sell out while ticket sales are outpacing last year's numbers by 52%. Facilities upgrades continue throughout campus, with a west side expansion to Williams Stadium to be followed by a comprehensive overhaul of the Football Operations Center (FOC). A renovation to Liberty Arena is also about to get underway, and McCaw says the Flames drew inspiration from Troy's new arena, adding: "Between Mickey [Guridy], myself and Todd Patulski, we bring a lot of different experiences to the table. We have a great planning and construction team on campus." (link); In Part three, the focus is on FB as it prepares for the transition to FBS, and to McCaw, the "measuring stick is always progress," both in on-field performance and coaching evaluations, which include metrics such as recruiting and the overall student-athlete experience. McCaw also noted that Liberty is in negotiations now with a TV partner for FB broadcasts. "I think [securing a multi-year rights deal] is really important for us in terms of building our brand and getting exposure for the program. We’re excited about that, and I think that we want to make Liberty football available to our fans, whether they’re in Virginia, somewhere else around the country or even international." (link)

New Mexico Men's Soccer HC Fishbein has expressed uncertainty concerning the future of the program, saying in a statement that he is "very concerned" his team will be "discontinued in the upcoming month," adding that Prez Stokes and AD Nunez are "excellent leaders" but new to UNM. Moreover, neither of their previous stops sponsored MSOC. "They have not experienced how popular soccer is in our State. They haven’t had the chance to feel the passion our State has for soccer. They haven’t been a part of BIG Lobo home games" against ranked opponents. Alumni, fans, former players and even city officials have written letters to UNM officials in support of MSOC. (link); Among those city officials who have written to support the program is Albuquerque Mayor Keller who, in a letter addressed to Stokes, cited the program's 12 recent NCAA Tournament appearances, top 25 attendance ranking and the city's semi-pro soccer club. He added: "Possibly the most impactful of all the UNM Soccer team's accomplishments is the development of high-quality, giving individuals that contribute to our community. Many UNM soccer players remain in Albuquerque and become some of our community's strongest leaders. They are our local CEOs, medical professionals, teachers and coaches." (link)
Fort Wayne will unveil its new logo today ahead of the official split between Indiana and Purdue campuses on July 1. New York-based SME, who has served as the school's branding partner, previously confirmed the Mastodon would remain as the university's logo, citing its place in local history due to a 1970 IPFW-aided excavation in Angola that uncovered a mastodon skeleton and baby mastodon skull. AD Hartley Hutton and Chancellor Elsenbaumer will hold a press conference at the Gates Center at 1PM to introduce the new logo.  (link)

You can add former Texas Tech MBB student-athlete Smith to Puma's roster of professional players, according to CBS' Norlander, who reports the German firm is "targeting a lot of players" in this year's draft class with more names expected to be announced this week. "I'm told at least one more big name in this year's draft is in Puma's sights, but uncertain if that is done at this point." (link)

South Alabama AD Erdmann says the school's board of trustees has given the university permission to move forward with groundwork and retention walls for a new FB stadium while it continues to pursue resources to support construction. For it to move forward in the next couple weeks as planned, Erdmann says USA will need to secure the "resources either up-front or through long-term pledges that allow us a reasonable debt service that we fill comfortable we can manage over the next time period to pay for the facility." Erdmann expresses cautious optimism that this will happen, saying there is "significant interest," adding that if the university can break ground in July, the stadium's opening game will take place in 2020 against Grambling. While newly named NCAA Managing Director for Championships Operations and Playing Rules Holman looks forward to implementing his own vision for the future of the College World Series, right now he plans on hearing from a wide array of stakeholders. "I don’t want to go in with any assumptions or preconceived notions about things because I want to see things clearly. I want to look at it with a clear set of eyes. I’ve told everyone, I’m on a learning and listening tour." Holman has begun that tour by having conversations with one of his predecessors, Poppe, who oversaw the CWS for 26 years. "I want the folks in Omaha and everyone else around to know that this is a dream job. Nobody replaces [Poppe], for sure, but I think that longevity helps the stability of the championship. And I want to bring that." Moving forward, Holman is open to hearing ideas on topics ranging from pace of play to lack of minority representation to arm care, and not just during the CWS. "We’re going to continue to foster our relationship with MLB, USA Baseball, little leagues and other stakeholders. To continue to talk about the state of the game -- not just our two weeks in Omaha." Long read on new Chicago State AD Zorich includes reflection on his time working for former Notre Dame & current Duke AD White, "People only look at the George O’Leary, Charlie Weis stuff when it comes to Kevin White. They do not realize what a great man and athletic administrator he is." Zorich also praises current Fighting Irish boss Swarbrick, "Jack Swarbrick is amazing. The point that stuck with me the most was, 'Always keep the student-athlete at the center of whatever you’re doing.' When you’re thinking about facilities and everything, you get caught up in this cost and that cost versus what is best for the athlete and the people in general. Perfect example: He builds two sheets of ice at Compton, one for the team and one for the community. There have been eight, 10 buildings built in the last 10 years and they’re adding more. That’s all him. He didn’t have to put that second sheet of ice in at Compton, but it was the right thing to do." Zorich plans to implement lessons he learned from both with the Cougars, "We’re going to make Chicago State athletics relevant and successful. Despite only playing 53 minutes for the Tigers, Michael Porter Jr. made an impact on Missouri MBB revenue, with sold out season ticket sales and the largest season-to-season attendance increase in the nation. The numbers speak for themselves: 2017-18 season revenue: $5,287,785, a 70.9% increase from the previous season's $3,094,448. Deputy AD/CFO Hickman: "We didn’t predict that it was going to sell out and get the hype it did. That beat our expectations. That shows you the strength of our fanbase." South Carolina Professor Watanabe: "I think this is about as much as you can expect. Now it depends how many renewals they got for season tickets before he declared." Hickman says it is early in the process of renewals, but knows that "the hype having the potential No. 1 draft pick isn't there." (link)
Facility Notes: Oklahoma State Baseball HC Holliday shows the progress on the new stadium, which will cost $60M itself, plus the $10M for the land and $5M for planning and designing. Should be ready to go by 2020, featuring a 7,400-square foot locker room and player lounge, nutrition center, 50-seat classroom and new ops center. Also will boast 2K square feet of video board down the left field line and a 360-degree concourse. (link); When Cincinnati's Fifth Third Arena reopens this fall, it will have 36 new LED Daktronics video boards, with more than 7M LEDs and 5,700 square feet of displays venue-wide. "The new video experience includes a nine-display center-hung LED video display with an accompanying halo ring, four additional LED boards in the east and west upper-level sideline areas (Bearcat Lair), four ring LED boards on each of the four corner pillars of the arena, ribbon boards both courtside and encircling the concourse seating fascia and an exterior LED marquee display on the east side of the facility." A commission to study the fair treatment of student-athletes has moved forward in North Carolina as  a larger bill passed the legislature last week that includes the student-athlete focus. Republican Senator Tarte, "Any athlete in the state of North Carolina could be impacted." Specific language from the bill, "The Commission shall study issues related to the provision of health insurance, sports injuries and non-sports injuries, and profit-sharing for student athletes." "Remuneration or profit-sharing" mentioned, as are travel expenses for parents, missed class time & name/image/likeness challenges. Tarte believes the commission could begin to set some national standards. (link)
