It's Final: L.A. County Superior Court Judge Shaller says the NCAA's "show cause" penalty against former USC FB AC McNair violated state law. Shaller's thesis: "McNair’s ability to practice his profession as a college football coach has been restricted, if not preempted, not only in Los Angeles, but in every state in the country." Shaller on the views of Pac-12 Commish Scott & Big West boss Farrell, who both voiced opposition, "The opinions of these two witnesses are completely speculative and irrelevant to the issue. The proposed testimony of Scott and Farrell is deemed inadmissible and is not considered." The NCAA disagrees, adds, "We will explore all avenues for relief to ensure that NCAA member schools in California can continue to abide by the same rules as the rest of the NCAA’s membership." (link)
Back in action in Lower Manhattan: Brian Bowen Sr. recounts getting an envelope of $1,300 from former Louisville & current Drexel MBB AC Johnson. Bowen doesn't "recall" offers communicated to him by former agency runner Dawkins from a number of schools, but does still point the finger at Oklahoma State & Creighton. (link, link, link); N.C. State Senior Assoc. AD for Compliance Doyle was also on the stand yesterday, said she had no knowledge of any payments to the father of former student-athlete Smith. Doyle: "If we had found out about it before we had issued the financial aid and it was determined to be valid and true information, we would never have provided the athletics scholarship. If we found out about it after the aid had already been disbursed, we would not award future aid." Doyle also pointed to irritations with the actions of former MBB HC Gottfried & his staff. Doyle is back on the stand today. (link); Creighton Prez Hendrickson indicates the university has retained Bond, Schoeneck & King "to assure objectivity and obtain expertise in NCAA-related matters." (link); DePaul HC Leitao: "I’ve paid very little attention to it. Mostly because we’ve been through this before and our recruitment of young men didn’t start last week, this was sometime ago. So our university has addressed all of those issues before and if there is anything new that comes up, which I don’t anticipate, then we’ll address it then. But our president, Jeanne our athletic director, they have been very comfortable with where we’re at and what transpired." (link); Yahoo's Wetzel asks if Louisville should get the death penalty. Yale AD Chun has been focused on jazzing up the interior of the Ray Tompkins House, home to her department, with freshly painted walls, new trophy displays & a coming 40-foot runner that will include the message of, "For God, For Country and For Yale" & celebrate a number of Bulldogs accomplishments over the decades. Merging sports medicine & sports performance is another key initiative for Chun as she beings to fully wrap her head & hands around the operation in New Haven. Chun: "My vision involves making athletics an integral part of the University. The student athletes here are unique in that they play at the highest level of athletics at such an academically rigorous institution. I want to help bolster school spirit and pride, in part so that the student-athletes can realize that their hard work is both recognized and appreciated by many people beyond the athletics programs that support them." (link)
Charlotte AD Hill gets the profile treatment from SportsBusiness Daily, notes his approach to social media usage, starting with, "Fans want to know you are not sitting in some ivory tower, that you are a real person and will engage with them." Further, Hill believes tone is key, likes the ability to expose more of his personality at times, yet mentions the difficulty of dealing with critics on social platforms. On that last point, "As long as it’s not inappropriate or disrespectful, I have no issue with that at all. I do try on occasion when I see something that is fairly egregious or dead wrong to really educate people on the truth. People really appreciate that. Also, to acknowledge if we’ve failed in an area, because no business is perfect." More. (link)

There's not a bunch in the article about what the review suggests to improve upon, but Tanner does voice, "...let me make it very clear — Jim Sterk and I are competitors, but we’re also colleagues. We sat down face-to-face more than once to discuss this and make sure we create a healthy environment for competitive basketball. I thought it was handled extremely well on our part. Missouri had some things they wanted to share, and they did. We’re all in a better place because of it." (link

The Hickman Camp Fund was down to a balance of $8M back in June after buyouts for new MBB HC Mack & the settlement with former AD Jurich. Meeker: "Fans are part of the campus community. They have to be heard. ... (But) I’m not on the board to make easy decisions. […] I think the football program is in good hands, albeit the fact that we’re not winning (this season). I don’t think it’s time to stand in the doorway, jump out of the plane and pull the D ring." (link)

"Great Employees Want to Learn. Great Managers Know How to Teach." That's Head of Governance and Policy at the World Economic Forum’s Center for Cybersecurity (C4C) Dobrygowski's headline for the Harvard Business Review. 1) Define goals and communicate them clearly - "Just as it’s the manager’s responsibility to communicate organizational goals clearly, it’s also the boss’s obligation to listen to employee’s personal goals and, where they align with the overall mission, support them and help build the skills necessary to achieve those shared goals."; 2) Identify and build your team's skills - "The ability to understand and build skills is the core of effective teaching and a key management responsibility."; and 3) Create opportunities for growth - "No one wants to feel stagnant or like they’re not achieving anything. Good teachers, and effective leaders, help those under them grow by giving effective constructive feedback and by fostering a growth mindset." Dobrygowski credits Maersk Chairman Snabe with this career tip: "He said that, in every organization, his first task was to begin training his replacement, so that when the opportunity came for his next step, there’d always be someone ready to fill his role and continue the team’s success." (link)

"The goal is business as usual. I’m very familiar with everyone on the staff — I know them, they know me — so from that perspective, a lot of things won’t change. The priority, as always, is our student-athletes." That's new UMass Lowell AD Casey on his approach to running the River Hawks' department after 15+ years as part of the leadership team. More: "Athletics isn’t the most important thing we do as a university, but sometimes it’s the most visible. We’ve widened our footprint from a recruiting perspective, which has enhanced the makeup of our campus in general. […]  One of my many goals from an alumni engagement perspective is to reach out to our former football players, and to be completely transparent in saying, ‘Look, we have no intention of bringing football back. However, we want to bring you back to campus so you can see what we’ve done. How can we make you and your family and friends proud of what you’ve been part of?'" (link)

[…] If you know how to reach your employees and can get the best out of them, you'll have a chance for success in a leadership role. […] I get excited about collaboration. The best ideas come when you get everyone in the room together." More in this 12-minute listen. (link)

SM2's Cecil continues her contributions to the Arizona Daily Star. Cecil: "University presidents and athletic directors face more risks today than ever. From the mob mentality on social media to hiring leaders that later implode, the collegiate athletic ecosystem has pivoted in a perilous direction. […] While it is the president and athletic director’s responsibility to ensure institutional and athletic integrity, there is no blueprint for these men and women to follow — or a feasible way to discover an employee or potential candidate’s dark side." Mentioned: former Auburn AD & current Florida Executive Assoc. AD for External Affairs Jacobs, Eastern Washington AD Hickey, former Tennessee/Kansas State AD Currie, plus leaders involved in the situation at Maryland. (link)
New Mexico: Former longtime Lobos administrator Estes chats with NMFishbowl's Libit, has a number of pointed comments, including, "They have always tried to sell football as a revenue producer. It is not. I don’t believe there has been a single year in history where football brought in more money than it spent. So, that whole thing about it as a revenue producer is a farce…This whole thing: ‘If we just get an indoor practice facility. If we just have our weight room.’ I am not saying we should drop football. I think it should be made to come within its budget. And I don’t think we should be giving it a blank check."
