D1.jobs: New opportunity below at Kansas, LSU & Arizona. Post your team openings in the most-read daily publication in college athletics. Learn more here.
Ohio State: News of the day came early as Buckeyes FB HC Meyer announced plans to step away & hand the program's reigns over to OC Day after the Rose Bowl. Meyer says he's "fairly certain" he won't coach again, though, of course, there was plenty of speculation to the contrary on the wire yesterday. Bucks AD Smith: "This is a complex place. And so having someone to be able to continue the stability and consistency that we have was important to me. So I did not feel I needed to conduct a public national search." Sounds like Meyer will be able to stick around the department in a new role if he so chooses. (link, link, link, link); Day's deal is five years at a $4.5M base & a slew of incentives. (link)
Northern Illinois AD Frazier gets a contract extension that could keep him in DeKalb until 2023. Included in the Daily Chronicle piece are a handful of financial terms, though it's a bit unclear if they apply to Frazier's new or old agreement. Of note, a $300K base, a $100K buyout if he exits before July 1 of next year, $50K after that. Frazier can also earn an annual $20K retention bonus. Frazier: "There’s always speculation about offers and there are things out there, and I think that what the president and board of trustees and others are saying is, 'Hey Sean, we like you and we’d like to keep you here,' and I’m humbled by the extension." (link, link)
Utah Prez Watkins on the narrative around the Pac-12 at the moment, "I’m aware of The Oregonian series on the Pac-12 & its leadership, which identifies a number of key issues, concerns & challenges. The U is a proud member of the Pac-12 & I'm fully engaged in working to ensure its continued success to benefit our institutions, teams & fans." (link)
Forbes' Dosh digs into the financial rewards each College Football Playoff participant program will receive. Notre Dame's payday of $6M is pretty straight forward since the Fighting Irish don't have to share revenue with anyone else. Alabama will get $2.05M from the SEC for its semi-final appearance, another $2.15M if it makes the championship game, plus a travel allowance. For Clemson, there's no extra cash coming from the ACC as all bowl revenues are split evenly. The Tigers will receive an expense allotment. Oklahoma: $2M from the Big 12, plus travel. More as Dosh goes even deeper on the details of how each league divvies out bowl cash. (link)
Compelling read from Florida Women's LAX student-athlete Mason, the daughter of Vanderbilt FB HC Mason, on her struggles with depression & anxiety in a piece for espnW. Excerpts: "When you're feeling depressed it's hard to even tie your shoes, let alone pull 18-hour days crammed with one thing after the next. I was always on edge. I spent the few off-days I had in bed. I knew something was very wrong, but I didn't feel like I could talk to anyone. How could they understand? I had a great family, good health, and I was getting to play a varsity sport at my dream college. I felt like I didn't have a right to feel sad, because so many people have it worse than me. […] When I left campus in September to go back home, I kept doing my coursework online, and that worked for me. Last year, I should have gone home to focus on my treatment, but I was afraid of falling behind. Now I want to tell everyone out there in a similar situation: nothing is more important than treatment. Do not feel embarrassed about stepping away from work or school to seek help. The most important thing is staying alive. Your life will be there when you get back." More. (link)
"In this case, the Government has singled out certain alleged NCAA rules violations as 'corrupt' and decided to prosecute them as federal crimes. [The] Indictment should be dismissed because the allegations fail to support a conviction under any viable theory of criminal liability. To the contrary, each of the Government's charges is predicated on a novel theory that is inconsistent with the relevant statutory language and would impermissibly extend the boundaries of federal criminal law well beyond constitutional limits." That's from attorneys for the five defendants - including former USC, Arizona & Oklahoma State ACs - set for trial in MBB-FBI developments in April who are pushing for a dismissal of the case. ESPN's Schlabach points to sources who say there have been preliminary plea discussions between the federal government & the defendants. (link)
Back at the Minnowbrook Summit in October, NCAA Prez Emmert "suggested" FARs & academic leaders in attendance to take a close look at online courses. Syracuse FAR Burton pens for SportsBusiness Daily on why online options are far more secure than ever before & part of the underpinnings of structural changes to higher education as a whole. Burton: "Here’s a hard truth, though. Academic faculties and state education departments, not athletic directors, approve classes. Thus, if Oregon State or Arizona State want to make entire degrees available online, to fit the busy lifestyles of the communities they serve, the question is only whether the NCAA or its member institutions want to restrict the academic rights of their student athletes by holding them to a different (and often higher) standard. [...] The suggestion that student athletes can only be taught on main campuses and cannot experience breakthroughs in modern education is a restraint we would vote against." More. (link)
Iowa State AD Pollard leveraged how well the Cyclones fan base travels to the Big 12 MBB Tourney in Kansas City with San Antonio leaders in an effort to land an Alamo Bowl berth. Pollard's push was successful & now ISU fans will head south in droves later this month. Looks like at least five charter planes have been booked with upwards of 1K packages moved. (link); Over in Iowa City, Hawkeyes AD Barta & Outback Bowl Executive Director McVay talk through how Iowa ended up in Tampa. McVay on his annual process, "I would say after eight games, you start to get a feel for who potentially could be out there for you. […] What you try not to do is get overly involved with anybody, be aware, have a good idea, have your discussions, but don’t let anybody get overly committed to thinking you’re going to get somebody when all the sudden they’re going to get snatched away. Or they lose a couple of games at the end of the year that you didn’t expect and their trend is down." More. (link)

It's That Time of YearStadium's McMurphy reports Alabama OC and 2019 Broyles Award Recipient Locksley and Maryland have agreed in principle to be the Terps’ next head coach. Sources told Stadium, “Locksley has deep ties to the local community and relationships with former and current students-athletes and the Terp family near and far.” Locksley’s coaching experience as well as the tragic loss of his own son may give him the unique ability to help Maryland heal and win both on and off the field. Looks like Locksley will stick with Alabama through the CFP. (link, link); Charlotte AD Hill goes with Austin Peay HC Healy to lead the 49ers. (link); Governors AD Harrison pens a letter to the Govs fanbase, says he will move quickly in hiring Healy's replacement and outlines the desired traits. (link); New Louisville HC Satterfield gets a $3.25M base. Buyout to Appalachian State is $425K. Cards AD Tyra has asked the ULAA Board to authorize liquidation of up to $4M from Hickman-Camp Fund to cover the cost of the FB staff changes, which, if approved would make the fund worth just $4M, down from its $16M value in 2017. (link, link, link); Georgia Tech AD Stansbury on what he is looking for in a new FB HC: "That person will be someone who knows who they are, knows who we are, understands that Georgia Tech isn’t a 'plug-and-play' situation and has a plan on how to be successful here. The only way to learn who best fits is through the interview process, which is ongoing." (link); Liberty AD McCaw will use a search firm and plans to move quickly for his FB HC hire, "Obviously this is the first time we’ve done a search as an FBS program, and again, people recognize the commitment from President [Jerry] Falwell, the resources, the facilities; really the momentum and upward trajectory of this program, I think, are all selling points." (link); LSU AD Alleva says no contract extension for FB HC Orgeron yet. (link); Former Central Michigan FB HC Bonamego's buyout is $834K. (link); Here is the updated staff changes tracker for FCS programs from FootballScoop. (link)
More Personnel: Colgate AD Moore hires Cal State Fullerton's Assoc. AD for Compliance Rogers to the same role in Hamilton. (link); Duke Women's Soccer AHC Bennekom gets the HC job at Indiana. Collegiate Sports Associates with a blog post on a new model to solve College Football Playoff access issues, starts by calling for the creation of a National Collegiate Football Association (NCFA) that would be unaffiliated with the NCAA & would "federate and manage rules, regulations." Creation of the 'Continental Football Conference' to be the sixth 'Power 6' league consisting of up to 40 programs in four 10-team divisions. Notes: "CFC members would retain their all-sport conference affiliations to preserve their AQ status into NCAA Championships (AAC, C-USA, MAC, MWC, Sun Belt). […] The 4 Divisions would play a full Divisional schedule (5-9 games) with a cross-over game against a team from another Division during the last week of the regular season." A four-team tourney of sorts at the end of the season would dictate which program gets to represent the CFC in an expanded eight-team CFP. (link)
SMU leaders set to name the court inside Moody Coliseum after alum, longtime supporter & trustee Miller at tonight's MBB tip with TCU. (link); Sticking with facilities for another moment, here's an interesting look at Teamworks' headquarters in Durham that's now up to 16K square feet to house a head count of over 100 employees. Firm CEO Maurides thinks the new space will already start to be "strained" by the middle of next year thanks to another upcoming hiring push. Oh, there's also a rooftop (bar?) open on Fridays. Teamworks now up to roughly 2,000 sports teams across college & pro ranks. (link)
How much does a rebranding cost? So far, William & Mary is knocking on the door of $20K for its "bold new" logos. New signage: $6,332. New road stencils: $4,279. New promotional items: $3,418. New trademark: $2,595. New business cards: $1,015. New envelopes & letterhead: $1,000. New name tags: $720. Total thus far: $19,423. (link)
Undergrad applications to Michigan State were down 8.3% for the Fall 2018 cohort as the impact of the Nassar saga is certainly part of the narrative. Scroll down a bit for a useful chart on first-year application trends across the Big Ten for the Fall of '17 & '18. Nine institutions with increases year-over-year, led by Wisconsin's eye-opening 19.7% jump. (link); Michigan State also makes its $500M settlement payment to survivors in the Nassar case. (link)
More from ECU's hire of Southern Miss AD Gilbert as the new boss in Greenville. Gilbert: "Athletics will not operate on an island, we are one, we cannot succeed by ourselves, we need the help and support of campus and the university community to be successful. So I think collaboration and strong communication is key for our success." Special Advisor Hart: "(The head football coach) had to be (Gilbert’s) hire, so we had to get the AD on board first. […] I’ve told the chancellor and this great fan base, I’m not going to abandon the ship. I’m not a hoverer, but I love to go to the Pirate Club meetings. I know our fan base, I know the culture and I love it." Hart's contract technically ends on the 15th of this month, but reports indicate both parties are working on keeping Hart fully in the mix. (link)
Watch: Big South Commish Kallander updates on a number of league initiatives. Of note, Kallander points to a number of communities (Charlotte, Charleston, Winston-Salem, Salem (VA) & Hampton Roads (VA)) who want to host a neutral site MBB Tourney, will spend more time exploring the possibility. Kallander also notes WBB will play a full double round robin next season for 20 league games, while the Men's side will tip 18. More talking coming for league leaders on strategic twists to the conference slates. Efficient six-minute video. (link)
The New Mexico Attorney General's office paid a visit to New Mexico's Lobo Club yesterday, bringing along a search warrant. From the AG's office: "We can confirm Special Agents with the New Mexico Office of the Attorney General served a warrant at the UNM Lobo Club offices today. We are continuing our highly active investigation into financial transactions at UNM and we will provide the public with updates as we are able." (link)
Nebraska FB fans experienced crazy weather of all shapes & sizes this season as first-yer HC Frost molded the new-look Huskers. Scanned ticket data: 77,648 for the season-opener against Akron that was eventually cancelled, 80,654 for Colorado, 73,558 for Troy, 70,816 for Purdue, 75,009 for Minnesota, 61,939 for Bethune-Cookman, 54,838 for Illinois & 61,401 for Michigan State. (link); And, if you've ever wanted to read a multi-thousand word entry on Nebraska FB's facilities & where the Huskers might need to go next, here it is. Most notable is the section that compares all the FB digs in the Big Ten. (link)
LSU MBB HC Wade wants to play a game in the 'Cow Palace' & with a name like that, who can blame him? It's actually LSU's Ag Center, which hasn't hosted a tip since 1971, but one look at the place & you'll understand how cool it could be. Senior Assoc. AD for External Communications Munson: "It would be a blast to do something like that. The logistics of making that happen, though, would be incredible if not completely implausible, given the age of the building and the safety and technology requirements we have today. But it’s a great idea to think about and have a little fun with. Who knows? Maybe one day." (link)
