A new AD chair opens as New Orleans boss Morel is headed to become the EVP of Sales & Marketing for the Allstate Sugar Bowl. Morel led the Privateers for the last six years & will be followed in the interim by Assoc. AD for Internal Operations Granito. UNO Prez Nicklow lauds Morel for his contributions, says the university will conduct a national search. (link)
Oklahoma State gets $35M big ones & will name its new Baseball stadium after oil & gas leader O'Brate. Pokes AD Holder notes first meeting O'Brate a couple of years back, "They said, 'Don’t be offended, but get ready because I have seen where he has a phone in each ear and he flips the microphone up and down depending on who he wants to talk to. He has two conversations going on over the telephone and he can be listening to someone in his doorway and have you sitting at his desk and they said to not get offended because he knows exactly what is going on and he will get around to you in your time.'" O'Brate compares himself to notable OSU mega-donor Pickens, "He has been in the oil business like me. He has stayed out of Kansas, well not really because 30 years ago, he came into Kansas and drilled a lot of gas wells when he was in Mesa Petroleum. We are the same age. He is five months older than I am. We were at Oklahoma State the same years, only he stayed longer than I did." More. (link)
G League $125K: "Select Contracts" for those not yet eligible for the NBA Draft. How many is "select?" G League Prez Turner says he will not pursue prospective student-athletes in the next recruiting cycle who have already committed to a university. Seven of the Top 10 of ESPN's 2019 rankings remain uncommitted. A 'program manager' will be hired by the league to serve as the point person to guide such players through their experience, which reportedly will include development coaches, training staffs, educational programming, more. Lots of questions remain. (link); ESPN NBA headliner Wojnarowski: "The NBA informed teams no changes to allow HS players into Draft will happen prior to 2022, sources tell ESPN." (link); NCAA Prez Emmert: "We appreciate the NBA’s decision to provide additional opportunities for those who would like to pursue their dream of playing professionally. […] ...this change provides another option for those who would prefer not to attend college but want to directly pursue professional basketball." (link); Sports Illustrated legal expert McCann's conclusion, "If the G League develops into a rival to the NCAA for elite players, the NCAA could decide to relax amateurism rules. It would also need to revisit some of its legal arguments. In the Alston v. NCAA case, which centers on whether the NCAA preventing schools from competing for recruits by offering market-based scholarships, the NCAA portrays itself as decidedly more appealing than the G League. In one brief, the NCAA wrote, '[D]espite the abundance of professional minor leagues such as Minor League Baseball and the NBA G League filled with very skilled athletes, none has ever attracted anything close to the popularity of college sports.' Will the NCAA need to alter its dismissive view of the G League? Only time will tell." Lots more. (link); WNBA reporter Gibbs: "Also, I guarantee you WNBA players are paying attention to this number -- which is bigger than the WNBA max." (link)
MBB-FBI: The outcome is now in the hands of the jury as closing arguments concluded yesterday. Defense attorney Schachter ended with statements that included former Louisville HC Pitino knowing exactly why former Adidas staffer Gatto was calling him, Kansas HC Self approving the payments to get current Jayhawks student-athlete De Sousa to Lawrence, as well as Nike & Under Armour operating in the same manner. (link, link); Yahoo's Forder and Thamel go in on allegations now surrounding Duke freshman Williamson, wonders if he's the "new Cam Newton." The duo gets feed back from sources with experience of NCAA investigations, one wants more context than what was heard in the courtroom & another thinks a major NCAA probe is headed to Kansas. (link); The Athletic's Lilly reviews, "Can prosecution get guilty verdict in trial on college basketball?" (link)
Maryland AD Evans recently met with the commission charged with investigating the culture of Terps FB, which will review the first set of results today. Evans: "It's important that everyone remember that is an independent review board. From the chair I sit in, I eagerly await the facts of that commission. We will take action that is appropriate based on the findings of the commission." A statement from the university says it emailed all parents, players & staff connected to the FB program with information on how to confidentially meet & discuss their experiences with the commission. (link)
Virginia FB HC Mendenhall pushes $500K of his own cash into the middle as the Cavs look to raise $150M for a major facilities revamp. Mendenhall's money will specifically go toward a new FB Operations Center & his program's victory over Miami (FL) last weekend has helped with some added momentum. UVA AD Williams: "I see fundraising the same way I see recruiting, because all of it is being able to build relationships and sell a vision so that people feel like they’re part of a team that’s going somewhere. And so because I love recruiting and the principles are the same … I am involved in all of it. It’s been received very, very well by our donors." Executive Director of the Virginia Athletics Foundation/Senior Assoc. AD Katstra: "It’s pure philanthropy. There’s no ‘give us $250,000 and you can sit in a suite at the 50-yard line or in courtside seats. […] The reality of campaigns like this is, if we don’t have eight-figure gifts, it makes it really hard. If we get 20 $1-million gifts, that’s pretty good. But you have to have to gifts of … $10 million and $20 million to get projects like this done." (link)

Sounds like Washington State AD Chun believes Cougars students & fans could set a record attendance tomorrow at ESPN College GameDay's set & show. (link); More Chun, "Washington State is on an awesome trajectory. This just adds more fuel to what’s going on here. This will just create more pride from our alums. This is just another thing to check off our list of great things we are going to continue to accomplish." And, on the impact of WSU's 'Old Faithful' flag showing up on GameDay for 15 years now, "Someone had a wonderful idea and poured their heart and soul into that idea. It came from someone’s heart, and that’s indicative of everything great about Washington State." (link); Where might GameDay go the rest of the season? Sports Illustrated's Ragatz predicts Jacksonville for Florida-Georgia, Alabama at LSU, Texas at Texas Tech, Cincinnati at UCF, Michigan at Ohio State, then the SEC Championship Game. (link)

$290K in bonus monies for Minnesota AD Coyle over the last two years. Max amount annually is $150K, a total Coyle banked in 2017, followed by $140K in 2018. The article doesn't detail or specify the incentive items, only that Coyle & university Prez Kaler agreed upon a structure that includes academic & athletics rewards. (link)
LSU AD Alleva tells his fan base to "keep it clean" during the singing of the popular song 'Neck' during FB games in Tiger Stadium. Last week against Georgia, the student section could be heard using a vulgar, five-word chant. Alleva: "Our goal is to create a competitive advantage for our team and to inspire our players and each other. Chants and cheers that blatantly offend rather than inspire do not represent what LSU is all about. Be relentless. Be loud. But, I’m asking our fans, and particularly our student section, to keep it clean. We have a diverse group of fans in the stadium and every week we represent the entire LSU family on national television. Let’s represent LSU with the pride and class it deserves." (link)
Louisville boss Tyra doesn't think anyone associated with the Cardinals expected the current downturn of the FB program, says he'll do a full evaluation of the situation at the end of the season. Also, "I guess having dealt with public companies as well in the past, you can’t get too wound up by that (public sentiment) because it’ll get you distracted, start guessing and second-guessing. That’s not how I operate. I think that I have my own set of metrics and my own way of thinking about success and what breeds success and leadership and all those things, and I’m not relying on fans to help me in that area." (link); Finding a new naming rights deal for Cardinal Stadium is another item Tyra will put on the back burner until the FB season is complete. On the Papa John's controversy, "...let's kind of move our way into the spring and distance ourselves from it." (link)
Missouri's Sterk still confident in the trajectory of Tigers FB under HC Odom though The Athletic's Miklasz isn't so sure Odom can provide enough juice to make up for the budget gap with the rest of the SEC. Miklasz: "What’s more important, a seven-win season or hiring a new, more dynamic and charismatic head coach to re-energize a bored fan base and pump up ticket sales and revenue? That’s a legitimate question, but it’s too soon for Sterk to deal with sensitive hypotheticals." Sterk notes the average support for other SEC annual funds is around 12,000 members as MU is growing, but only sits at 7,100. Sterk: "If people want to have a better program, they need to help us in those areas. In tickets and in annual donations for scholarships." Miklasz ends with thoughts on FB as big business & Sterk being a businessman. (link)
More Personnel: Central Michigan AD Alford promotes Blunt to Senior Assoc. AD for Institutional Support Services, will oversee compliance and student-athlete services, serve as sport administrator for soccer and lacrosse and lead the department's leadership academy, all as part of the executive leadership team. (link); Wyoming AD Burman with a handful of promotions, led by Asst. AD Hulet up to Assoc. AD for Budgeting and Financial Management & Asst. AD Vernon now Assoc. AD for Football Ops. (link); Chicago State AD Zorich hires Summit League Asst. Commish for Compliance Cook as Assoc. AD for Compliance for the Cougars. (link); UT Arlington restructures its external relations office with former Florida Gulf Coast Director of Athletics Communication MacBain as Assoc. AD for Communications. (link)
TV/Streaming/Radio: Former ESPN Prez & current DAZN lead Skipper: "I will tell you that it is really fun to be in a position where you are not trying to navigate a transition, where you can jump right into the future. The future of sports is going to be on streaming services, and that is all we [at DAZN] have to worry about. […] People are not going to subscribe to 40 different streaming services. […] We’re a global business. We’re building a business in Japan based on baseball, we’re building a business in Italy with Serie A [soccer], we’re building a business in Canada based on the NFL. Fighting is the entry point for our service in the U.S., but we fully intend to supplement fighting with other sports." (link); Dedicated SiriusXM channels for the Big 12 & Big Ten will launch on the 22nd of this month, rounding out the media play for all five 'Power 5' leagues. (link); Another excellent tweet storm from former Head of Strategy at Amazon Studios Ball & #24 is most interesting as the investment of big dollars into sports rights by the big broadcasters may carry less weight these days as a vehicle to achieve "lift" for other programming. Ball specifically thinking about CBS, but the theory applies to the other three, as well. (link)
Nebraska AD Moos notes the key of ADs being an integral part of the on-campus recruiting effort of prospective student-athletes, "I've always felt there's a lot of different pieces to these jobs, but what's more important than the recruiting piece, especially now that parents can have their expenses paid to come on campus? I think they all need to hear about the vision and passion and how secure the football program is, because when things are shaky, it becomes a caution. I think parents need to hear our vision, and my coaches appreciate that." On attending practices, "I don't want my chancellor or president in my staff meetings. They trust me to run this place, and I trust my coaches to coach. And, by God, I have a lot more important things to do than being at a practice. Now, my coaches do know that if I show up at a practice, there's probably a problem." More in the latest look at Moos' leadership style. (link)

Seton Hall's Lyons Q&As with the Asbury Park Press, points to new turf, stadium-style seating, a new press box & more for the baseball & soccer digs at Owen T. Carroll Field with work beginning in January or February. Wants to put in new seats at Walsh Gym, along with some digital boards & Lyons also has designs for a new hoops practice facility. On the Big East's moves forward since forming the new league, "Six years ago we were all sitting around a room saying, 'Well we’re going to go out on our own.' If you said we would have two national championships and we’d have half the league in the NCAA Tournament every year, that would have been better than anyone could have imagined. We’ve proven we can have success and we’ve proven it can be sustained as well.  Most importantly, recruits have seen that." More. (link)
The latest 'Knowlton's Notes' from the Cal AD includes, "We have also recently received a report from Marts & Lundy, a fundraising consulting firm that analyzed the campus overall, as well as Cal Athletics specifically, and we are taking a good look at its recommendations. I feel fortunate to have come at a time when we've had an outside consultant review both the campus and our department's fundraising strategies, which will be valuable in the near term and for the development of our vision and strategic plan for the long term. Another source of input for our strategic plan will be the results of our Listening Days, which we completed over the summer. We are now reviewing all of the feedback from sports and administrative meetings and are beginning to create and implement action plans with a focus on areas we identified as challenges. This will drive where we put our resources and where we want to go as a department." (link)
San Diego State AD Wicker continues his PR campaign around the build of a new FB stadium for the Aztecs, believes shovels will be in the ground by 2020 with first kick in 2022. Wicker an emphatic "yes" on question of if the SDSU Mission Valley plan will come to fruition if voters give it the green light over other community options. Is it a guarantee? "Our plan is we are going to negotiate to purchase the property from the city." More. (link)
Illinois Chancellor Jones is putting together "a coalition of the willing" to continue working toward a new university mascot. Earlier in the week, the campus senate voted 64-29 in favor of a handful of recommendations on how to proceed through identification & selection. Education professor Burbules sponsored the resolution, but notes worry with further campus division if the process isn't handled carefully. (link)
Former Baylor FB student-athlete Faulk has sued the school on the grounds of a mishandled Title IX case, lack of due process & more. Faulk claims the outcome has negatively impacted his ability to get signed to play professionally. At the center of the situation is the university's stance that Faulk didn't disclose a previous sexual harassment complaint during his time as a student-athlete at Florida Atlantic. More. (link)
Also Noticed: LSU will wear purple helmets tomorrow. (link); With the release of the 2019 Big 12 FB schedule came the news that Texas Tech and Baylor will no longer meet at AT&T Stadium during Thanksgiving week, but instead return to campus sites for the 2019 (Waco) and 2020 (Lubbock) editions. (link); West Virginia has $35M planned in renovations for the WVU Coliseum over the next five years, but nothing will happen before this season. A bigger video board and improved sound system will accompany a new court, but the addition of premium seating is still up for discussion. (link); Rep. Jordan paid $38K to Shirley & Banister Public Affairs, a D.C.-based public relations firm, to help discredit allegations that he knew about former Ohio State team doctor Strauss' actions. (link); The opening day NBA rosters feature former student-athletes from 115 different NCAA schools. Kentucky leads the way with 30. Duke boasts 25 players and just six other schools have double-digit representation: UCLA (17), Arizona (12), Kansas (12), North Carolina (12), Texas (10). Power 5 conferences account for 80% of all former collegiate-level players on NBA teams, broken down by league: ACC (82), Pac-12 (69), SEC (63), Big 12 (41) and Big Ten (39). (link)
