"I want to say survive (was my first goal), but that’s probably not a good answer. I think the first thing we wanted to accomplish was just to listen. To listen, and to get to know people, establish relationships." That's Baylor boss Rhoades after two years of leading the Bears. Rhoades' unit was the first to complete recommendations suggested from Pepper Hamilton, "I really believe we completed them at a high level. Once you complete, once you implement, then you have to sustain. So I think we’re in the process of doing that. You can never rest on any of that, right? We always have to be mindful of how do we get better, what are our best practices. So that’s something that is going to continue to evolve." Rhoades also repeats that God called him to Waco, the same for FB HC Rhule & university Prez Livingstone, and continues to push forward, "I feel like there’s probably not an area in our department that we haven’t done a deep dive into, really have an understanding of what we do well, what we can change, how we can be leaders, how can we be elite. We like to use that word in everything we do. We want it to be at an elite level." More, including facility projects on the horizon. (link)
WABI5's Solari gives his take on the Maine AD search, one he doesn't have a ton of inside information on so far, "The Black Bears have had 6 athletic directors in 12 years. It is likely the next person doesn’t stay much longer than a few years. Maine is a stepping stone. Some of you fans you need to accept that, and that’s ok with me. As long as the new ad truly understands the challenging landscape in Orono and gives 110% while they are here, like Creech did. Others have not. This is a big hire. Money is tight, and college athletics are constantly evolving. The committee has no room for error. Let’s hope we hear a list of candidates soon." (link)
Savannah State AD Steward got his turn at Alaska Fairbanks, focused on the keys of raising more cash for the Nanooks & lobbying in Juneau to get the state legislature to understand the importance of athletics at UAF. Steward pointed to his experience with the Tigers of having to generate funds to supplement sport & department budgets. Steward was the last of three AD candidates to play their hand. (link)
Interim Murray State AD & longtime Women's Golf HC Milkman: "I know the transition period will be busy, however, we have an excellent staff at Murray State so I am confident that things will continue to move forward in a positive direction. I don’t plan on changing things on how I coach our team. […] As of now, I am taking it day to day and undecided on if I will pursue the position on a permanent basis." (link)

United Airlines, Delta and Southwest are among those giving gate agents and flight attendants access to more customer data in an effort to give passengers a more personalized service experience. Delta and United are experimenting with food and beverage preferences, but all airlines are "trying to strike a balance between a welcome personal touch and getting a little too personal. What one traveler considers great service, another might find invasive." Lots more here, including technology that allows the on-plane crew to have more immediate access to all types of information, from passenger's personal data to the plane's safety history and flight path's weather forecast. Rutgers AD Hobbs took to Twitter yesterday to support Scarlet Knights FB HC Ash after he was mentioned by CBSSports.com's Dodd as having one of the hottest seats in the game. Hobbs: "Hey CBS Sports! You can take my guy off your list. Program building takes time and Chris Ash is doing a great job!" (link); Another tweet of note from yesterday came from MBB analyst Rothstein, who says UMBC AC Skeeters will be named as the new HC at Delaware State this week. (link)
The Las Vegas Review-Journal's Graney argues UNLV leadership needs to step up & provide the money needed to complete the Fertitta Football Complex. Graney: "You have to be all-in, 100 percent, and if that means a state university that already claims its financial support of athletics among the highest in the Mountain West funding an additional $5 million to complete what would be the most significant building in its football program’s history, you do so. If there is any hope of moving forward, you find a way. Take out a loan. Get creative. But give your program a real shot, or why bother anymore?" Graney also points to Rebels AD Reed-Francois, says she knows what it takes & is "trying like crazy to improve things," continues on why the project has to be completed & not significantly delayed. (link)
Oklahoma State sold beer during baseball home games this past season and when it was all said and done the number of beers sold equaled approximately 25% of the total attendance. If that rate was projected to Football, where the Pokes will sell beer at Boone Pickens Stadium this season for $8 each, some 13K beers would be sold each game, leading to more than $100K in revenue. Additional security personnel and 100 more concessions workers hired to sell beer will offset much of the profit, but Deputy AD Weiberg notes: "Whatever money is left after expenses, we’ll put it right back into the overall fan experience. We’ll continue with improvements on the comfort, enjoyment and security of our fans." (link)
The increase in female owners across the NFL is "changing the narrative" as SI's Vrentas takes a look. Currently, eight organizations have a woman "holding a primary ownership stake" (Bills, Bears, Browns, Saints, 49ers, Titans, Raiders & Lions). Former Raiders CEO Trask: "If one is suggesting that only women can articulate viewpoints that are important to women, that’s akin to saying that women can’t articulate other viewpoints. […] As some of these women become the next generation of leaders, they will have a strong voice, if they choose to do so." (link)

Well, this is interesting. The Wall Street Journal examined the word choices of SEC FB HCs at this year's Media Days, specifically how many times each used the words "I" of "We." According to Texas Psychology Professor Pennebaker, use of the word "I" is most often by people of "lower status" and tends to indicate a less powerful, more self-reflective and more insecure individual. Comparatively, higher status folks ten to stick with "we." Complete chart of all 14 coaches here, but Vanderbilt HC Mason claimed the "I" prize, using the word 3.9% of the time, while LSU's Orgeron led the "We" group at 3.8%. Texas A&M boss Fisher with the most overall words (4,895) while Ole Miss HC Luke spoke only 3,070. (link)
ESPN's Hale takes a look at the key FB stat of turnovers & specifically the role luck plays in taking care of the ball & taking it away. The Power Rank's Feng, who holds a PhD from Stanford in applied math, "The analytics say that turnovers are way, way more random than coaches or fans think. It's not a perfect way to say there's no skill. It's just that turnovers are a really subtle thing, and randomness plays a much bigger role than people want to think." Tennessee HC Pruitt over-indexes for coaches who have produced turnovers & says part of the magic is defensive personnel who are used to handling the ball. Other indicators include stopping the run at a high rate and, naturally, putting offenses in third down passing situations. Lots more in the weeds. (link)
Presbyterian FB HC Spangler on preparing for the upcoming season, the school's first since its announcement to transition to non-scholarship football and move to the Pioneer League in 2021: "The ones that stayed, the ones that have decided to continue and play ball at PC, they had an awesome spring. I mean, it was really good and productive and encouraging from a standpoint of, the guys that are here, they truly want to be here and I don’t think there’s any doubt that initially there was some disappointment with the decisions on everybody’s part. But it’s kind of time to move on and get ready to play." The transition for FB is part of the "Promise of PC," a new strategic plan introduced by Prez Staton last fall that will "better position us academically, athletically, and financially so we can deliver on our mission and vision for many years to come." The Blue Hose will add Men's and Women's Wrestling and Acrobatics & Tumbling to the portfolio. More Spangler: "Obviously when the decision was made, there was some disappointment. But what am I going to do about that now? I’ve got a choice. I can decide to be the coach here, or not be the coach here. And I’ve decided to be the coach here." (link)
Also Noticed: Stephen F. Austin Track & Field AC McCown is the new HC of the sport at James Madison. (link); Western Carolina Baseball HC Moranda will be part of the USA 17U Coaching staff. (link); Bowling Green dismisses two Football student-athletes for their illegal use of credit/debit cards that belonged to the school. (link)
Note: Sounds like Kentucky State's claim of being the first HBCU to hire a new AD from a 'Power 5' institution may not be entirely accurate. Thanks to readers for pointing out current Coppin State AD Carter was at Virginia Tech when he became AD at Virginia State in 2001 & former St. John's AD Goff was at Maryland when he became the boss at Bowie State in 2010. However, I guess there's debate on when the 'Power 5' really became a classifying cohort. Follow-up emails are welcome. (link)
