D1.jobs: New opportunity below at Colorado State. Post your team openings here.
Ohio State: As you very likely know, Buckeyes AD Smith will be suspended for two weeks starting at the beginning of next month & FB HC Meyer will sit for three games due to their lack of appropriate reporting of developments around former FB AC Smith. If you just read one thing on the latest news, it should probably be this from the Columbus Dispatch's Rabinowitz, who weaves together yesterday's 11-hour Board of Trustees meeting, the disciplinary decisions by Prez Drake, the press conference & the subsequent release of documents that will certainly open eyes. (link); Here's the entire presser. (link); Here's the independent investigation's findings, which include the wiping of text message off Meyer's phone, medications that impacted Meyer's memory, questions about if his wife shared knowledge of troubles for the (AC) Smith family with her husband, lots more. (link); Here are more supporting documents, including the personnel file for former AC Smith. (link); Reactions/headlines/more...

+ The Ringer's Titus, a former OSU MBB student-athlete, "I know a lot of people have a lot of opinions on how this should have been handled, but I gotta say that I'm proud as hell that my university has the b---s to drop the hammer and withhold one entire paycheck from Gene Smith. That'll teach him. Nobody is going to talk about this because it's much more interesting to debate Urban, but the fact that Gene has not only survived the Tressel and Meyer scandals but somehow got a lesser punishment than the coach in each instance is staggering. What a world." (link)
NET: No more RPI for MBB as leadership in Indianapolis rolls-out the NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET). Game results, game location, strength of schedule, scoring margin (10-point cap), net offense, defensive efficiency & quality of wins/losses to be the inputs. "The model, which used team performance data to predict the outcome of games in test sets, was optimized until it was as accurate as possible." NCAA VP for MBB Gavitt reminds that subjectivity among the selection committee members will still be an ingredient of March Madness. (link); CBSSports.com's Norlander points out more, including the key five components: Team value index, team efficiency, wins, adjusted winning percentage & scoring margin. Gavitt says the 10-point scoring margin cap was the most optimal in testing, though there will only be a +1/-1 variable for overtime games. Key note: Distance traveled & days before a game will not be considered. Gavitt adds he plans to be super transparent about the new system, won't entertain applying the new model to past seasons as it's not "productive," encourages programs to "keep scheduling tough. [...] Whether it's the RPI or the NET or anything else, they're all fairly highly correlated. The committee is not going to change its philosophy in rewarding a strong strength of schedule. We'll be educating about that and engaging about that. This shouldn't be a sea change in terms of philosophy of scheduling." (link); First NET to be released in late-November or early-December & then come out weekly. (link)
Sports Illustrated legal expert McCann reviews the claims of former Texas A&M FB student-athlete Marchiol in his push to gain immediate eligibility at Arizona. Of note, "The most controversial question as to whether Marchiol is entitled to a waiver is whether Marchiol’s treatment at A&M directly impacted his health, safety and well-being. […] It will be interesting to see if the leverage that a prospective transfer student has over a school impacts how well schools treats their players and how fastidiously schools comply with NCAA rules. […] Marchiol’s best shot of playing immediately is convincing the NCAA he deserves a waiver—a strategy that appears at odds with A&M’s interests." (link)
The AP's Russo caught up with Texas AD Del Conte, Notre Dame boss Swarbrick, Florida AD Stricklin, Tulane's Dannen & Northern Illinois AD Frazier on dynamics of FB scheduling. Del Conte points to the balance of CFP access & an attractive home slate for the benefit of his fanbase. Swarbrick likes games in South Bend with notable brands who have never visited before, wants to build a 12-game campaign that's as good as 13 kicks for others. Stricklin: "Some of the costs of these guarantee games are shooting up so much that's why these neutral site games have become so popular with these nice pay days." Dannen: "Every FBS school in the country is recruiting in this area. To convince and cajole people that this is a good place to come and play has not been real hard." Frazier says directly, "(Guarantee games) quite frankly, saves jobs at our institution." More. (link)
Texas AD Del Conte says he called Texas A&M counterpart Woodward back when he was hired in Austin & FB game dates became open in 2022 & 2023, but the Aggies were totally booked up & had to pass. Del Conte: "At some point, I have to think the contracts will lineup and we'll play. But until then, I have to do what's best for the University of Texas." (link); Woodward points to already tough schedules, adds, "With the right circumstances at the right time, but not right now. We already have some very good home-and-away nonconference games for our fans. It’s something coach (Jimbo) Fisher and I will talk about and consider, but it has to be at the right time and the right opportunity, when it works for both (schools)." (link)
CBSSports.com's Parrish & Norlander with their latest 'Candid Coaches' series, this one on the question of if the MBB rule changes coming down the pike will actually fix things. More than 100 coaches were surveyed & 92% said "no." One coach's opinion: "How does reducing July stop anything that's going on? How does allowing some players to talk to agents stop anything that's going on? How does anything they recommended stop anything that's going on? It's a joke. They can't fix the problems because I'm not even sure they know what the problems are. They don't want to fix anything. They just want to make it look like they're trying to." (link)
The Chronicle of Higher Ed's Ellis writes on the vibe among notable professors at Maryland as the aftermath of late FB student-athlete McNair's passing & claims of a toxic culture within the FB program play out. University Senate chair & plant-science professor Walsh: "This is something that’s viewed as the university’s front porch, but it’s certainly not helping right now. Shared governance doesn’t really govern the athletic department on this campus, and I’m not sure if it does anywhere else." Walsh continues on his theme of limited oversight of athletics. Education professor Malen notes "the complexity of bureaucracies and the complications of preventing tragic behavior." (link)

San Diego State AD Wicker traveled 25 miles south into Mexico to take a look at Estadio Caliente in Tijuana with designs to play a FB game in the venue at some point in the next couple of years. Florida State Prez Thrasher turns to Chief of Staff Coburn to oversee athletics for an interim period of time before a new AD is hired. Coburn has deep knowledge of state politics & is described as "a 34-year veteran of the Florida legislative process." Thrasher: "I depend every day on his wisdom and good judgment, and I am confident athletics will be in good hands." Of course, Coburn's appointment begs the question of if it's more or less likely any internal candidates will be considered to replace outgoing FSU boss Wilcox. (link)
Southern Miss AD Gilbert recruits Santa Clara Senior Assoc. AD for External Operations Mitchell to Hattiesburg as his new Deputy AD. Mitchell will have oversight of compliance, academic support, sports performance, serve as chief legal liaison & have sport facilitator duties for FB & MBB. Mitchell: "I am honored to return home to Mississippi to serve our state and to serve the University and Hattiesburg communities. I am especially grateful to Jon Gilbert for trusting me with the opportunity to help build on the positive momentum impacting the Southern Miss athletics department." (link)
William & Mary AD Huge needs to hire a new FB HC in the coming months with longtime leader Laycock set to retire & she'll leverage an "informal group of advisors" made up of former FB student-athletes. Huge says such hiring processes can't take place in the public domain, so the announcement of the advisor cohort will be the last news on the developments until she's at the podium with the new HC. "Broad," "comprehensive," and "inclusive" all used to describe the search. (link)
Facilities: Georgia Tech just spent $4.5M on a new FB locker room, but Yellow Jackets AD Stansbury has no plans to slow down, points to an expansion of the weight room as a key next project. Stansbury believes there are donors out there who can cut a check, "There’s a saying. It’s something along the lines of, 'A funded project becomes a priority project.'" (link); Here's Seton Hall's new refueling station. (link); AL.com's Talty has the full story on the apartment & condos that sit next to FB training fields at Alabama & reports of tenants not being allowed to watch practice. McMaster professor Reid goes in on household "breadwinners," as well as "breadsharers" & attitudes between husbands & wives. Of interest, "Research on dual-career couples often focuses on how spouses balance their earnings or work hours, but my research showed that these groups of men differed most fundamentally in how they perceived the social status of their wives’ work — its worth and prestige in society. This perception in turn shaped how men described the financial value of their wives’ work. In other words, wages are far more than just dollars […] The importance of status in men’s interpretations was somewhat unexpected; in our conversations about work, career, and couples, we often focus on earnings and work hours. This research shows that social status — worth, esteem, and respect — matters too for couples’ careers." More. (link)

1.Question's Brown catches up with former Maryland AD Anderson as the former multi-stop boss leader points to the importance of authenticity & vulnerability as keys in the top chair. Anderson: "It's very important to inspect what you expect. […] If you walk amongst the troops, they will tell you what is really going on with your leadership. […] Leadership is like athletics, we always keep time and score. You have to be honest and open with each and every person that reports to you and keep them abreast to how things are going with respect to their role. […] Those who listen and observe are the best leaders and the most successful people in any business they are involved in." Part one of a two-segment entry, 14-minute listen. (link)
BYU AD Holmoe indicates his MBB program could face additional NCAA penalties in connection to student-athlete Emery's acceptance of impermissible benefits. More to be known this Fall. Holmoe again says he doesn't expect much movement on the conference realignment front until 2023 & believes most FB games won't be watched on TV 10 years from now. Further, Holmoe thinks this year's FB season will be more successful that a year ago. (link)
Kansas Faculty Senate Prez McClure emailed all faculty members earlier this week his suggestions for reducing the upcoming $20M budget slash on campus. Included in his list is eliminating the $1.5M subsidy that athletics receives from the university and instead have athletics give $1.5M back to academics. McClure: "I’ve been here 31 years, and we haven’t had a meaningful raise in 10 years. The university has us working under an austerity budget. I have to be a janitor for my own classroom — I didn’t spend 11 years in college to be a janitor in my classroom. So it gets you when you see a $100 million dollar athletic corporation not making a contribution. Or when you see the Central District built and now we can’t afford it. The existing faculty don’t feel they need to bear the brunt. We didn’t make that mistake, don’t expect us to pay for it, but that’s exactly what this budget cut is saying to us." Assoc. AD for Public Affairs Marchiony's response on behalf of the department: "We appreciate Professor McClure’s thoughts on the university budget. We believe a strong athletics program is inextricably linked to KU’s mission as a research institution and member of the Association of American Universities." (link)
Wisconsin renames its Office of Student-Athlete Development to the Office of Career & Leadership. Context: "The new unit offers one-on-one career and leadership support, team workshops and group programs. (Asst. Baylor's office of general counsel hired Ketchum for communications support back in 2015. Per a Ketchum spokesperson: "Ketchum provided reputation management counsel to help Baylor University address the serious issues of sexual violence and student safety. Our goal is to make meaningful change within the institutions we counsel." There are sources that have since come forward to say that Baylor used a "mole," reportedly Director of Student Activities Burchett, to act as a liaison with school officials, help arrange demonstrations for survivor groups, "befriend them," and pass on information to university leaders and the communications department. More from Ketchum: "There were people at the university who provided the client-agency communications team with in-person recaps of events, such as candlelight vigils, which is common in these types of assignments." Lots here. (link)
