Texas A&M: As you've likely heard or read by now, former Aggies FB student-athlete Marchiol claims he was the conduit to providing prospective student-athletes on unofficial visits with plenty of cash to have a good time during their stay in College Station via money provided to him in bathroom handouts by AC Peveto. Marchiol also indicates the coaching tactics of the new staff for the Aggies go over the line in verbally challenge student-athletes, conducted impermissible workouts plus pressure to return from injuries early. All of this & more is part of Marchiol's transfer waiver request as he's trying to join former TAMU boss Sumlin at Arizona. USA Today's Wolken broke the story & notes Marchiol's attorney is Arkansas-based Thomas Mars, who has been involved in other high-profile cases of late, "When the stakes are this high, nobody should expect the student-athlete’s advocate to be pulling punches. After all, what choice do you have when the transfer rules invite the disclosure of misconduct at the student-athlete’s former school as grounds for a waiver?" Texas A&M says it's reviewing the situation & yesterday afternoon HC Fisher indicated he didn't know enough about the claims to provide comment. (link, link); The Athletic's Olson: "The implications here are fascinating. If Marchiol’s efforts are successful, delivering dirt on your former school in exchange for immediate eligibility at your new school is a transaction that should terrify a lot of coaches." More. (link); Also, for what it's worth, Fisher's inaugural contract has officially been signed by all parties in College Station. (link)
Ohio State: The Columbus Dispatch's Rabinowitz says FB HC Meyer met with the independent investigation team "more than twice" & Bucks AD Smith did so "at least twice." Both leaders were accompanied by their own counsels. Today's board meeting, which starts at 9am, could last several hours. (link); OSU will make results of the investigation public in the form of a written report. (link); Stadium's McMurphy hinted yesterday during a radio interview that more news could drop on the developments. (link)
Maryland: University system leaders will name five more individuals to the panel who will review the culture around Terps FB. ESPN's Dinich says the additions will come before the end of the week. (link);  Washington Post headliner Jenkins goes hardline on Terps HC Durkin & all of college FB, "An NFL player hasn’t died from heat exertion in 17 years. That’s the full measure of the crude, knuckle-dragging stupidity at work here. You know how many kids NCAA football coaches have killed with conditioning drills in that same period? Twenty-seven. I say 'kill' because that’s what it is when tyrants force captive young men to run themselves to death out of their own outdated fears of weakness. Why is the NCAA tolerating this kill rate, which is unmatched at any other level of football?" Another passage, "Coaches conduct these workouts for only one reason: They have antiquated notions of man-making and are completely unread in the latest sports science. Mesozoic notions die hard. Obviously, the medical fate of other people’s sons should not be in their hands." More. (link)
The Daily Press's Teel reviews how the situation at Maryland has been considered by Virginia, Virginia Tech & Old Dominion. Cavs FB HC Mendenhall: "So I think every program in the country certainly has to be examining, and rightly so, how the young people are treated. How are they groomed and developed, and what’s acceptable and what’s not? So yeah, I think it’s a profound time, and possibly a tipping point in college football, and maybe all of college athletics, as to what kind of conduct is appropriate in pursuit of winning and pursuit of success." Even prior to the McNair tragedy, UVA invested $60K in core body temperature sensors, which are injested by freshman & at-risk student-athletes before every workout. USF, Florida, Arizona State, Texas & a host of NFL organizations are also using the technology from HQ Inc. Monarchs HC Wilder on a recent issue during a workout, "Were we overly cautious? Probably. … But sometimes being overly cautious is the right thing to do. It’s the compassionate thing to do. It’s also your responsibility." (link)
Wisconsin AD & former College Football Playoff committee member Alvarez says he's open to the idea of adding two more programs to the annual post-season bracket, "Two byes [for the top two teams]. …  Maybe give one spot to the … [Group of Five champion]." More: "There are probably six teams that can win. Some of those schools -- that have years like that -- should have a chance. They could fit it in. I'm thinking more open-minded to six, personally. I never thought we'd want to." CFP Executive Director Hancock reiterates that no commissioners are talking about any additions. Alvarez also says strength of schedule is a super important metric within the decision room. CBS' Dodd, per sources, "The CFP management committee (the commissioners) cannot begin addressing a larger field until 2023 […] That's three years before the current contract expires." (link); Here's a good rundown of all the facility projects on tap in Madison. I'm counting eight-ish initiatives on the docket. (link)
Nevada: Wolf Pack AD Knuth answers a bunch of questions during a one-hour review of his portfolio, says he truly believes all 16 programs can win, "This whole year -- fall, winter, spring – could be really, really special for us as a department, for us as a university, and certainly for us as a community. It could be a really, really fun year." Points to MBB's run & upcoming expectations as providing momentum to the entire department, details a $214K deficit for the most recently completed fiscal year & points to the continued importance of building a multi-sport indoor facility. (link); Knuth on the deficit, which now totals $5.9M due back to the university, "We're going to clean that up." Support for FB is key, "We’ve had tremendous success in basketball and our basketball revenue has jumped, but when you’re winning in football and the community comes out and supports football, it changes the dynamics of your financial situation and your ability to do things. You’re talking about instead of hundreds of thousands of dollars (in basketball), you’re talking about millions of dollars or more to the bottom line when football is winning and Mackay Stadium is full and people are buying tickets." (link); On the potential of one day hosting the Oakland-turned-Las Vegas Raiders for training camp, Knuth says the Pack have 80% of the needed facilities in place, but would also require financial support to pull it off, "We have 16 sports and the 11th-largest budget in our (11-team) conference. We have our own financial challenges already, so we’re not looking to take on more. It’d be a huge benefit to our community, it’d be a huge benefit to our program for sure and we’re going to do everything we can to try and figure it out. That’s all I can really promise at this point." (link)
The News & Observer submitted an open records request to North Carolina on the topic of FB coaches facing disciplinary measures, as was previously mentioned by AD Cunningham, in connection to student-athletes selling shoes. However, the results turned up a big goose egg. Context: "Some relatively minor disciplinary measures for public employees, such as letters of reprimand, aren’t public record. Universities can make that information public under what’s known as the 'integrity exemption' in the state personnel law. It allows officials to explain personnel actions so the public can have confidence in how their institutions operate. However, when asked for a comment after the university’s response to the public records request, Cunningham again declined." (link)
South Alabama leaders, including Jags AD Erdmann, indicate they'll move forward with the build of a new on-campus FB stadium despite city leaders rejecting a $10M support proposal for the new digs. Of note, "We are disappointed by this setback, but we also are inspired by the outpouring of support from our students, alumni, employees and fans. […] USA's leadership is exploring all possible avenues of funding for the stadium, and we anticipate that we will continue to generate interest in the stadium among individuals and private organizations. The University is continuing with site preparation for the stadium, so that we will be ready to move forward with construction when we are able to identify the needed sources of funding support." (link)

Georgia-Oregon in Atlanta to open the 2022 season is now official. (link); Dawgs AD McGarity says a series with Texas, one in Athens & one in Austin, is also on the table & conversations with Clemson continue. Speaking of the Longhorns & Tigers, there's apparently a potential deal between the two out into 2030 & 2031. UT is also working with Penn State on future scheduling possibilities 10+ years from now. (linklink); Have any of you Learfield or IMG College cats accepted a sponsorship payment in bitcoin yet? I suspect the answer is "no," but it seems the day is coming as English Premier League side Leicester City did as much with eToro. (link)

Florida State: Gridiron Now's Coleman rattles off a short list of potential candidates to become the next AD for the Noles. Ole Miss AD Bjork, IMG Academy co-Managing Director & former Oklahoma CFO Phillips, San Francisco 49ers Senior Personnel Executive & former FSU student-athlete Mayhew & university Board of Trustees chair Burr all reviewed. (link); Interestingly, FSU FB HC Taggart will work for his eighth AD in nine years as a HC once there's a new boss in town. Senior Assoc. AD for Governance & Compliance Curry notes why outgoing AD Wilcox should fit the role in Indy so well given his diverse background, "It’s a hell of a coup on their part, frankly. You’re happy for him, but at the same time, you’re like, 'Damn!'" (link); Tallahassee Democrat sports editor Henry tweeted that an announcement on a new $60M standalone FB facility, along with $40M in upgrades to other venues, will be announced on September 2nd. (link)
AAC Commish Aresco calls UCF AD White's push to brand the Knights as National Champions following last year's FB season "brilliant," plus, "People are talking about them and you could argue that's all for the good because the conference has been trying to make that national impact." As for White, "I've loved every minute of it. We're an upstart in college athletics and we're going to continue to do a lot of new and aggressive things around here, and that's how we're going to realize the potential of this place. I didn't think it was going to get as much attention as it did. I don't know how I could have thought the conversation would get that loud nationally, but it was great that it did. It was good for the brand of our university, and hopefully it was really good in terms of promoting change to the system and expanding the playoff." ESPN's Adelson gets other former 'Group of 5' leaders on the record, including Utah FB HC Whittingham & former Boise State AD Bleymaier, with their thoughts on the current CFP structure. White says he made a conscious decision to push the National Champions narrative over one of expanding the CFP to bring a bigger spotlight. More. (link)
UAB & the Mike Slive Foundation for Prostate Cancer Research team up to raise money the month of September to fight prostate cancer with $25K already committed from Blazer leaders. UAB AD Ingram: "The UAB football program prides itself on playing for more than just football itself, and this partnership is extremely special given Mike Slive's influence on Conference USA and in the Birmingham community." (link);'s Dudley inks on UAB's non-conference FB scheduling strategy as Ingram points to geographically close FCS programs as part of the mix. There's also home & homes with MAC & Sun Belt foes, plus guarantee games at 'Power  5' opponents. The big question is if the Blazers can get a P5 in Birmingham once the new stadium is built. (link)
Stanford Assoc. Director for FB Dale talked to 1.Question's @TaiMBrown about managing personalities on the coaching staff & being HC Shaw's point person. Dale: "One of the really important parts of my job is being the bridge of our football program to all the departments of our athletics department. […] My job is to make sure we have the best possible relationships with everyone in athletics. I can't do my job without all of them, and they need us to do their jobs as well. […] At the end of the day if you don't know how to do something, that's fine, but if you know the right people and you have the right relationships, you can probably get it done." 11-minute listen. (link)
Interesting long read from ESPN's MacMullan, "When making the NBA isn't a cure-all: Mental health and black athletes," that starts by profiling how former Kansas MBB student-athletes Marcus & Markieff Morris grew up in a dangerous part of Philadelphia & both share how they now suffer from bouts of depression. Former Auburn student-athlete, NBA standout & current media headliner Barkley: "I thought it was normal for every black girl to be pregnant in high school, because in my small hometown of [Leeds], Alabama, that's how it was. It wasn't until I got to the NBA that I realized, 'Wait, that's really f---ed up.' It's a miracle any African-American player turns out OK based on where we come from." Lots more. (link)

For all of you who play some "noon ball," know that team sports produce the best results for physical & mental health according to a recent study conducted by Yale professors that analyzed 1.2M Americans. From the WSJ's Reddy: "The researchers also found that those who exercise between 30 and 60 minutes had the best mental health, with 45 minutes the optimal duration. Exercising three to five times a week correlated with fewer dark days." So, even if your jumper is broke, lace up your sneakers & hit the hardwood. (link)

The Drake Group responds to the recent MBB rule changes, prefaces by saying the development is yet another example of the lack of proactive leadership at the NCAA. Specific issues with the coming changes: 1) "No process has been defined to determine 'elite' status, which may invite antitrust or equal protection litigation regarding an arbitrary evaluation and labeling system"; 2) "All athletes should have the right to participate in a professional draft with no penalty unless they actually accept an offer of employment."; 3) "The current rule limiting athletes to five paid visits is sufficient and far in excess of benefits provided to non-athlete students."; 4) Questions surrounding how institutional leaders will be held accountable; and, 5) All sports should have to guarantee tuition, room, board & books to any student-athlete who spent at least two years at the school & wants to return to compete his/her degree within 10 years, not just hoops. More. (link)
Wake Forest AD Wellman pens to Demon Deacon fans, reflects on the success of last season which included the highest Learfield Directors' Cup finish since 2008-09 thanks to an NCAA team championship, two individual ones, two conference titles and a FB bowl win. (link); Sharp looking 54-page PDF of the 2017-18 Year In Review, which includes stats such as 50% of all student-athletes making the ACC Honor Roll, 63% of graduating student-athletes earning at least a 3.0 GPA, eight teams with APRs above 990, and 100%  of teams participating in community service. On the facilities front, the $5.4M sports medicine/hydrotherapy space, $4M Coliseum phase I renovations, $3M soccer practice complex, $1.5M volleyball renovations, $800K soccer video board and $160K tennis scoreboard were all completed during the past year. Florida AD Stricklin pens to the Gators faithful as the 2018-19 competitive seasons get moving, outlines continued work on the Facilities Master Plan with resurfacing of the track & tennis courts due to be completed next month. Also, Softball upgrades are "in full swing," as well as, "Design work and meetings on the baseball and football facility projects remain a focus. We continue to plan on breaking ground on the baseball ballpark this fall, with the football project to follow in about a year as design work and fundraising continues." The new Wi-Fi system in The Swamp is staring to go in & fans may experience active connection this season ahead of next July's full completion. (link)
Rice gets a major commitment from alum Bruce Dunlevie & his wife Elizabeth to endow the FB HC position, the first such endowment for the athletic department. Owls AD Karlgaard: "We believe the endowment of our head football coaching position will serve as a catalyst toward the permanent support of other head coaches in the athletics department." Bruce Dunlevie is a founder and general partner of Benchmark Capital, which has invested in a number of tech companies you've heard of (Twitter, Instagram, WeWork, Uber, Snapchat, etc.) (link)
Grambling AD Bryant says, "We are still in approval stage" for alcohol being sold at GSU sporting events, but believes by September 22 the Tigers should be able to move some suds. (link); Florida A&M will restructure its Rattlers Boosters Club so that $100 covers annual membership and $750 will get you a lifetime membership. Exec. Dir Mitchell says depending on season ticket sales to carry the athletic program is no longer "adequate" due to the large number of sports and travel budgets. As of May, the RBC is $200K ahead of last year's giving and the goal is to get at least 10K alums to give at least $100. (link)
Also Noticed: Penn extends with Aspire for a multi-year contract. Since signing on in 2014, Penn has seen a 24% increase in FB season ticket revenue, 9.2% in MBB and $135K in new revenue for the Penn Relays. This is Aspire's ninth FRMC extension in past 12 months. (link); You have to wonder if this is the next student-athlete graduate transfer case to get reversed as LSU has denied former QB McMillan permission to transfer to any SEC school or other Tigers' opponent for the next two seasons. McMillan is allowed to request a hearing with the school to gain permission for certain league schools as he was "set to transfer" to one, but that move will have to wait for the fourth-year junior with two seasons of eligibility remaining.
