The Oregonian's Canzano reports on a "Pac-12 NewCo" plan presented by the league to its CEOs back in November that proposes to consolidate all revenue streams - broadcast rights, sponsorships, merchandising & other commercial rights - into a new entity with a 10% stake potentially being sold to private equity or others for $500M. Canzano: "Under the 'Pac-12 NewCo' plan, a cash infusion of $500 million would be available for immediate distribution to the Pac-12 members." Canzano includes three slides from the presentation deck, which project $36M in annual revenue from DirecTV starting in 2020 & a one-time $347M from ESPN in 2024. Another nugget, "the plan assumes FOX would renew its current broadcast contract with the Pac-12 in a 10-year deal worth more than $2 billion." Interesting stuff. (link)
Notre Dame AD Swarbrick does not think yesterday's CFP loss to Clemson will impact the candidacy of future Fighting Irish squads. ACC Commish Swofford's view, "You make that selection based on the information they have at hand when they make it, not after the semifinal games. So a lot of things can happen in a game and if a team doesn't show well, it doesn't necessarily mean they didn't deserve to be here. They might've just had a bad day." (link)
USA Today's Wolken takes aim at the whole CFP structure, believes the lack of real on-field drama yesterday & a coming rematch of Alabama & Clemson is "kind of a drag." Thesis: "The problem is this shiny new playoff was supposed to add drama, to goose television ratings, to take everything that was already great about the sport and amplify it to bigger audiences and fatter wallets. Instead, under the veneer of making college football more democratic, it has wound up in throes of oligarchy. [...] A sport whose unique appeal is its ability to create hours of compelling drama, week after week, simply can’t accept laying an egg on its flagship day. While the last three national championship games have shown the best of college football, the playoff results have made more of an argument to contract rather than expand." More. (link)
The Athletic's Clark points to Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport as the center of the college FB universe, especially during the season, as some of the thousands of passengers who pass through its halls are headed to match-ups near & far or simply just wearing swag to support their team. Clark had an 11-hour layover in ATL earlier in the week & saw no less than 39 FBS programs represented. Airline worker Stewart: "Every Saturday, really, honestly, Thursday and Friday are the highlights,” Stewart said. “It’s not Saturday. Saturday is where you more than likely want to be. Thursday and Friday is where everyone is going for their particular game. That’s when you see all kinds of fans, Thursday and Friday." (link)

Multiple reports indicate Houston will part ways with FB HC Applewhite after an 8-5 (5-3) campaign. West Virginia HC Holgorsen on the wire as the target. (link); "The actions Houston is taking will not help in any way position Houston for the future. In fact, just the opposite. Today and the way this was handled only reeks of desperation. Obviously there was no studying of those who built programs for the future the right way." That's a leader within the Big 12 to Yahoo's Thamel on Houston's move to replace Applewhite after just two seasons & its continued desire to crack the 'Power 5.' Thamel doesn't hold back, points to UH Prez Khator, Cougars AD Pezman & mega-donor/Houston Rockets owner Fertitta as a "clown triumvirate...being cackled at around college sports." (link)
More on the relationship between Ohio State & Oklahoma ADs Smith & Castiglione that gave the former clear perspective on the internal hire of new FB HC Day. Now here's a helluva question from Castiglione, "I’ve had this asked of me since: 'Can an athletic director or university effectively develop a succession plan?' I think the answer is yes that’s possible, but it’s not always guaranteed. You may have individuals on the staff who are really strong in their given role, but maybe they’re not the right person to move into a head coaching position at the time it comes open. It doesn’t always work out like that. You never know if you have that luxury or the skill set. But it’s certainly an important consideration that everyone should have because if there is an outstanding leader already on the staff, the ability to create continuity and a seamless transition exists." Smith notes the timing of OU's decision last season was different than OSU's, but the guts of the programs were pretty similar, "There are times when private companies need to be blown up. Usually they’re in a down spiral, the culture is bad and you need to bring in new blood to shake it up. This was so far from that. That clarity came fast for me." More. (link)
Quick read on the NBA's search for a new WNBA leader. The league had a banner season on TV last year, up 30%, even though it continues to lose money to the tune of $12M last season. NBA Commish Silver says a search firm has been engaged & there's been significant interest in the post. Silver: "Ideally we would find someone who had extensive basketball knowledge, have very strong business skills. The league is going into its 23rd season, and it’s not a secret that we haven’t cracked the code on how to make money in women’s basketball. … We have to set this league on a path to sustainability. We need to focus on building corporate partnerships." (link)
Hyatt Hotels CEO Hoplamazian on the value of asking seemingly stupid questions, "Those simple questions often led to interesting discussions about why we do certain things the way we do, and that led to changes. But it was organic as opposed to me coming in thinking that I knew better. It was actually the result of inquiry." Hoplamazian also used the word "empathy" a bunch during his Corner Office interview with the New York Times, "We’ve focused a lot of time and attention on mindfulness as a key capacity. In order to practice empathy, you have to be present, and one great vehicle to being present is to be mindful. […] To me, first and foremost, I want people to be present, to be able to engage and really glean what’s going on with someone. Don’t be so focused on executing the checklist and the services that you’re supposed to provide to them that you’re skipping over what’s really going on with that person." (link)

I'm not really sure what to make of this piece from UCF's student newspaper, Knights News, as an email thread between Missouri AD Sterk & Florida boss Stricklin shows Sterk lobbying for the Tigers to land in an optimal bowl game. Sterk says the info he passed to Stricklin was no different than what's publicly available. Miami (FL) law professor Ravicher says it's evidence of antitrust violations. UCF public relations professor McCain on Knights AD White's external strategy in battling the current college FB power structure, "This is, in my opinion (and only my opinion) the beauty of Danny White’s strategy. Keep stoking the fires and keep the conversation out there. The more the public learns about how the P5, Bowl system, and national championship works (and it does operate like a cartel), the better the chance for change." (link)
Gametime creator Rakh puts his concept out there in hopes Twitter will adopt it. Gametime is a new way for fans to connect during live action. It automatically places you in a group chat of 8-12 people, with live commentary and stats interjected into the chat stream, that only lasts for the duration of the game you're watching. Rakh suggests Twitter implements it as an option for users who want to watch live sports while also interacting on social media. Pretty neat step-by-step on how it works. (link)
Also Noticed: Akron AD Williams hires Walsh University (Division II) Women's LAX HC Mitchell as the inaugural leader of the newly formed Zips program that will debut in 2020. (link); Iowa State and Washington State fans cleared the shelves of Busch Light at the Alamo Bowl. No surprise given trend lines in lead up to the game. (link); Alabama HC Saban gets $200K for advancing to the CFP championship, brings his season total to $775K. Also, how about this: "Alabama will be paying more in bonus money to its football assistant coaches and head strength coach (nearly $1.35 million so far) than 32 FBS public schools paid in regular compensation to their 10-man assistant coaching staffs this season." Clemson HC Swinney also gets $200K for advancing, now up to $625K and if still employed on Jan. 1 - the start of a new contract year for him - gets a $1M retention payment. Despite the loss, Michigan's Harbaugh gets $200K for the Wolverine's bowl appearance, while Florida's Mullen gets $100K for the Gators finishing in the top 10. (link); In the last four years, the only conferences to win a CFP game are the ACC and SEC. (link); The Athletic's Mandel: "The get-in price on StubHub for Clemson-Alabama title game in Santa Clara dropped from $680 to $600 since last night. Last 2 years in Tampa and Atlanta were closer to $2,000." (link)
