D1.jobs: New opportunities below at Oklahoma State, Kentucky, Delaware & Arizona State's Sport Law & BusinessPost your team openings where thousands of administrators start their days. Click here to get started or if you're having trouble filling your position, we recommend contacting Turnkey Search.
Where to begin? Here's the Department of Justice's release on Operation Varsity Blues, which included athletic administrators, coaches, celebrities & many others in a scheme to get under qualified prospective students in the doors of notable institutions by posing as student-athletes. The second link is full 269-page criminal complaint. (link, link)
+ USC Senior Assoc. AD/Chief Administrative Officer/SWA Heinel allegedly received $1.3M in bribes to get two dozen-plus students in through the "side door." Heinel was dismissed yesterday, along with legendary Men's Water Polo HC Vavic. The university released a statement, including, "At this time, we have no reason to believe that Admissions employees or senior administrators were aware of the scheme or took part in any wrongdoing — and we believe the government concurs in that assessment." (link, link, link)
+ Texas AD Del Conte on the involvement of Men's Tennis HC Center, "It’s a difficult day in our department, as we received reports that a member of our staff is accused of wrongdoing. We have placed Coach Center on leave until further notice while we cooperate with the federal law enforcement authorities in reviewing this situation." (link)
+ Stanford parts ways with Sailing HC Vandemoer, though it says neither student in question ever ended up on The Farm. (linklink)
+ UCLA Men's Soccer HC Salcedo has been placed on leave. Per the university, "UCLA is not aware of any current student-athletes who are under suspicion." (link)
+ Former Yale Women's Soccer HC Meredith was reportedly paid $400K during his involvement in the scheme. (link)
+ Wake Forest placed Volleyball HC Ferguson on leave as it waits to see how things play out. The Deacs have hired outside counsel to assist. (link)
+ Former Georgetown Men's & Women's Tennis HC & current Rhode Island HC Ernst was placed on leave, allegedly received $2.7M for his work. (link)
+ The NCAA's statement: "The charges brought forth today are troubling and should be a concern for all of higher education. We are looking into these allegations to determine the extent to which NCAA rules may have been violated." (link)
+ Sports Illustrated legal expert McCann: "In response to the scandal, universities will need to review how their coaches and academic administrators are monitored and evaluated. It appears that the scam went on for eight years. This means that multiple iterations of university president, provosts, deans and athletic directors failed to detect wrongdoing or missed warning signs. To that point they may demand reform by SAT and ACT test centers to ensure that standardized exams are not gamed by cheaters. […] If any athletic programs received funds through the bribes, expect NCAA punishments to follow." More. (link)
The San Jose Mercury News' Wilner with more on dynamics between the Pac-12 league office, Commish Scott & member Athletic Directors. Per a source during meetings back in October, "It got pretty heated. There was acrimony because of how the schools felt they had been treated. It had reached the boiling point with the officiating." Since then, Wilner reports the AD group has taken a much more active & direct role in setting conference direction. Arizona boss Heeke with context, "That was a difficult time, with the challenge around football officiating. It further galvanized the ADs. We talked about how we are a conference of 12 institutions. We’re not one office. We all have to work together." Colorado Chancellor & Pac-12 Board of Directors Chair DiStefano says he's always operated with a great deal of cooperation among senior staff members, has talked to Commish Scott about operating in the same vein, indicates any conversations about Scott's contract will be broached at a later time, "What’s really important now is moving forward with Raine." More. (link); The Oregonian's Canzano continues his hard line on the Pac-12, points out that Scott will stay in a $7,500 per-night suite at ARIA during this week's Pac-12 MBB Tourney. It takes a number of paragraphs for Canzano to note the suite won't cost the league a dime, though he says it's still super poor optics & calls for new conference leadership. (link)
ESPN nails down a deal with DirecTV's 19M footprint for the coming ACC linear network. Per SBD/SBJ's Ourand: "ESPN will depend on Hulu's and DirecTV’s national footprints as they negotiate with other distributors, including Comcast, Charter, Dish Network and AT&T U-Verse." (link); Here's how ESPN is promoting the ACC Network with a campaign dubbed "We Do This." Includes school-specific creative (featured via the link) & assets that will run across TV, digital, radio & social. ESPN Senior Director of Sports Marketing Berry: "As we developed this campaign, our goal internally has been to revel in the range of the ACC. We met that challenge by representing the uniqueness of the member schools while celebrating a dynamic conference that adds up to more than just the sum of its parts." (link)
BIG EAST leaders & partners will ring the bell this morning at the New York Stock Exchange as the league's MBB Tourney tips-off. For the first time as part of the event, the BIG EAST is also hosting a 'Startup Challenge' described as "an academic competition contest that focuses on the entrepreneurial accomplishments of selected students from each of our 10 member schools." The Startup Challenge will go down on Saturday morning. Interesting wrinkle. (link)

MBB HC Compensation: In what would normally be the leading news of the day, USA Today rolls out its latest look at MBB HC pay. Kentucky's Calipari tops the list in school comp ($7.95M) and total pay ($9.276M). Duke's Coach K ($7.048M/$7.048M), Michigan State's Izzo ($3.732M/$4.157M), Virginia's Bennett ($4.15M/$4.15M) and Kansas' Self ($3.881M/$4.066M) round out the top five. The average total pay among Power 5 coaches is $2.83M, up from $2.67M last year. 55 make $2M+, compared to 47 last year, and 21 top the $3M mark, compared to 14 last year. (link, link); Louisville took a different approach to new MBB HC Mack's deal, giving it additional protection to the university. MBB HC Mack's contract is 12,157 words, more than twice the length of the deal for former Cards leader Pitino's. Lots here on the new safeguards. (link); Texas Southern HC Jones has a $50K base salary this year, less than each of his three full-time ACs. His pay will jump to $250K on July 4, four days after his LSU buyout ($400K/year minus future earnings) expires. He will also receive a one-time retention bonus of $200K on August 1, which is basically back pay for his first year in Houston. (link)
Appropriately, Forbes also released its annual review of the most valuable MBB programs around the nation. Louisville tops the charts with a three-year average of $52M in revenue & $30.4M in profit. Rest of the Top 20: Kentucky, Indiana, Duke, Kansas, Ohio State, Syracuse, Arizona, Illinois, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Michigan State, Maryland, Arkansas, Michigan, Texas, N.C. State, Tennessee, Marquette & Alabama. Eye-opening stat: The Cards clearly $23M last year, more than NBA franchises in Charlotte, Cleveland & Oklahoma City. (link)
Even with high-flying financial results, Louisville also continues on the wire with former MBB HC Pitino's on-going legal situation. Attorneys for the university's Athletic Association say they need access to Pitino's phone records to fully understand the relationship between the HC & former AAU mover & shaker Gassnola. ULAA has subpoenaed AT&T for two of Pitino's phones that weren't university property, "Pitino’s communications are central to many of the claims and defenses of both parties in this case, but ULAA does not know the full scope of those communications because Pitino has refused to turn them over." (link)
Former Kansas FB HC Beaty has sued the university to the tune of $3M as he claims KU hasn't paid-up on his buyout terms. The Jayhawks say they uncovered potential rules violations during exit interviews with the former coaching staff. Assoc. AD for Public Affairs Marchiony, in part, "Beaty refused to cooperate with the KU review and, ultimately, the NCAA took the lead in the still-ongoing investigation. Due to the nature of the allegations, which, if true, would be in violation of the terms of Beaty's contract, the university has withheld payment of money owed to Beaty pending the outcome of the NCAA investigation. In a show of good faith, the university has placed the full amount owed in escrow." (link)
More Personnel: Reports indicate Texas A&M MBB HC Kennedy will not return. (link, link); SIU-Edwardsville will promote MBB AC Barone to HC, comes with a multi-year deal. (link); Portland AD Leykam will look for a new WBB HC. (link); So will Rhode Island AD Bjorn. (link); Gonzaga WBB HC Fortier left the game during the fourth quarter of yesterday's WCC Tournament championship game because of a family medical emergency. (link); Maryland Wrestling HC McCoy will step down after the NCAA championships later this month. (link); USA Today's Berkowitz with the bonus bucks: North Dakota State MBB HC Richman gets $10K for his teams's Summit League title/NCAA bid. Northern Kentucky MBB HC Brannen picks up $20K for his team's Horizon League hardware/Big Dance ticket. Utah State MBB HC Smith gets $10K for his Mountain West COY honors. Counterpart Rhoades at VCU gets $7,500 for his A-10 COY award. Mississippi's Davis $50K for SEC COY. Purdue's Painter wins Big Ten COY, comes with a $47,448 bonus. (link)
"I don’t know how we’ll be treated at the tournament (selection), but we’ve tried to engineer our nonconference and conference to do what we think they have asked in terms of quality scheduling." That's Big Ten Commish Delany on the league's MBB scheduling strategy, including the 20-game conference slate. Further, Delany alludes that there's not a future in NYC for the MBB Tourney, calls Chicago & Indianapolis "great places" to host the event, notes Detroit, Minneapolis & Omaha as "three to think about" for beyond 2022. (link)
Another 'Power 5' program will work with Legends as this time it is South Carolina for "a comprehensive study of Williams-Brice Stadium with a focus on enhancing the fan experience." Gamecocks AD Tanner: "In working with Legends, we are looking at a long-term plan that will make Williams-Brice a quality fan experience for many years to come. This will take a large investment, but we know there is competition for the entertainment dollar, and we want to give our fans the best experience possible when attending events at Williams-Brice Stadium." First emails to fans go out tomorrow. (link)
UConn WBB games on SNY continue to out-rate the Boston Red Sox & the NFL's 'Thursday Night Football.' The Huskies averaged a 6.0 household rating this season in the Hartford/New Haven market, the third-highest mark in the seven-year partnership. Comparatively, UConn MBB tips on the outlet averaged a 2.6. (link)
More TV talk as SBJ's Ourand digs in on AT&T's future sports rights strategy. Key from Ourand, "Now that AT&T’s Time Warner acquisition is official, industry executives expect the company’s conversations around rights negotiations to have little to do with linear television. Imagine how much AT&T could market the leagues and their games in their AT&T stores, of which there are about 5,300. It would not surprise sports executives if AT&T, the nation’s second-largest telecom, starts to load its cell phones with the B/R Live app, which would make that a more attractive place for media rights. What can AT&T do to make mobile connectivity in league arenas and stadiums better, especially with the promise of 5G?" (link); Former ESPN & BET executive Symonds is again pushing an HBCU media play with his new HBCU Go app that launched earlier in March. Symonds is trying to aggregate rights school-by-school as he says there's no "true destination for HBCU (content)." (link)
Also Noticed: Updated MBB comparative data. Eleven teams have already punched tickets to the Big Dance. (link); San Jose State gets a pair of $500K gifts for the new FB operations center, one from alum Thompson and his wife and another from an anonymous donor. The Thompsons will also leave a remaining percentage of their trust to establish the Thomas E. Thompson Athletics Scholarship. (link); Uber Eats is now the official delivery company of the NCAA. (link); ESPN announces the creation of the College Esports Championship. "Among the titles being played in the CEC are Overwatch, Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, Hearthstone, StarCraft II and Heroes of the Storm. ... Players will compete for college scholarships, according to ESPN. The LAN Championship also will become the only collegiate championship for Overwatch, replacing the championships previously held at the Fiesta Bowl. The LAN Championship, as well as select qualifying rounds, will be streamed on various platforms." (link); Colgate hosted strategic diversity consultant and co-founder/managing partner of the LGBT SportSafe Inclusion Program Caple for a series of inclusion workshops with athletics staff and student-athletes last month. (link); In collaboration with Learfield IMG College, Purdue launches the Purdue Wooden line, which "celebrates the remarkable Boilermaker and Basketball Hall of Famer, John Wooden." The tank shirt is a replica of the jersey Wooden wore during his playing days, with Purdue block letters and his No. 13. (link); "The NCAA has filed a trademark application for COLLEGE BASKETBALL ACADEMY. The filing states that the NCAA intends to use the trademark to 'provide governance, establish rules and guidelines in the field of HIGH SCHOOL sports.'" (link); UC Davis FB will travel to South Dakota State in 2022 for a $215K guarantee. (link)
