Sounds like ECU Chancellor Staton is aiming to hire a new AD in Greenville by the end of the month. Preferred attributes: Existing ties to the university and/or Eastern North Carolina, "ability to unite a fractured fan base," big-program perspective, proactive approach to changing college athletics landscape. Staton says he'll be reaching out directly to some folks, not just waiting for resumes to roll in. Staton also wants to figure out a permanent role for Special Adviser to the Chancellor for Athletics & multi-stop AD Hart, whose current arrangement expires on the 15th of December. (link); Important for whomever becomes the Pirates' next boss, the student fee for athletics is going up by $50. Staton: "In North Carolina, we are not allowed to use state appropriations to fund athletics, period. So that really puts us at a disadvantage when we are compared to peer institutions in our conference." (link)
ESPN's Outside the Lines requested Title IX complaint data from all 'Power 5' institutions, 32 of which responded with findings that include "...data from the past six years indicated 6.3 percent of Title IX complaints against students were against student-athletes, who make up 1.7 percent of the total enrollment at the schools that provided numbers." Also of note, "While the raw numbers showcase the increased likelihood of accusations against student-athletes...there's no consensus about why that's the case." Foundation for Individual Rights in Education VP Harris says 20% of the 256 lawsuits filed against universities on the subject "feature student-athletes arguing they were unfairly treated after being accused of sexual assault or domestic violence." More. (link)
Maryland: Sources tell a trio of Baltimore Sun reporters former Maryland FB HC Durkin delivered "one of the great halftime speeches of all time" to the USM Board of Regents during his meeting with the group late last week, an oratory that changed many minds in the room & led to his eventual, albeit short lived, reinstatement. Sources also say Prez Loh warned the board that "all hell is going to break loose" if Durkin was retained. Also, "Their first vote was DJ has to stay. Then the inconsistency dawned on them. If they wanted to keep Durkin, they had to keep Evans." More. (link); The Middle States Commission on Higher Education has launched a review of Maryland's accreditation. Possible outcomes include a warning, probation, termination of accreditation or nothing at all. (link); WaPo perspective piece title from former Chronicle of Higher Education Editor Selingo: Public university governing boards oversee multibillion-dollar operations. They should start acting like it. Thesis: "In my two decades covering higher education, I have found that public university board members often come to these positions with little knowledge of how colleges and universities actually work. […] Given their day jobs or their political persuasion, they usually have pet issues and rarely pay much attention to anything else on the agenda until it reaches a crisis stage. The problem is, a number of issues have reached that crisis point in public higher education, requiring vigilance and action by engaged boards. Athletics is certainly one of those issues, as campus leaders at Michigan State University and the University of Louisville have lost their jobs because of sports scandals. At the same time, the financial underpinning of public universities is collapsing as states reduce direct financial support. That leaves these boards in a critical position to figure out how to ensure access for state residents even as they look for new ways to pay for operations." (link)
Cash Money: $8M from notable Arizona donors Cole & Jeannie Davis toward the $15M indoor sports center, a venue that will now bear their name. Renderings toward the bottom of the piece. (link); $3M of the Curtis Foundation's latest $21.275M commitment to North Carolina will go toward "ventures to be determined at a later date" for Tar Heels athletics. (link); Texas has a lead gift on a projected $10M project for its athletics hall of fame. The family of die-hard UT fan & decorated World War II veteran Denius with the donation. (link)
Northwestern unveils its refreshed $110 Welsh-Ryan Arena. Wildcats AD Phillips says this isn't the end, but really the beginning as now his hoops HCs get to recruit to the new digs. NU Prez Schapiro: "If people come here for the theater program, they get the best of facilities and the best of training. Our athletes are shining in the classroom, and they should also have the best possible facilities." It's hard to see any resemblance of what Welsh-Ryan used to look like in the video. Sharp work. (link - article, link - video); Here's a video of the inside of Dayton's upgrades to UD Arena. Flyers AD Sullivan notes there's still construction going on "it's a pretty construction zone," says the completed phase II will roll right into phase III. Sullivan points to the space created to improve the customer experience as the most important enhancement. A bit more. (link)
The Tampa Bay Times' Fennelly says of UCF FB, "There isn't a more polarizing program in college football. There are equally thin-skinned UCF boosters and detractors on both sides of the social-media wall." Knights AD White indicates he has no regrets over continuing to press forward publicly for equitable consideration of his program & believes UCF is playing for USF & all 'Group of 5' members to get fair treatment down the road, "...all we're doing is celebrating our team and advocating for what we think any reasonable person would agree is a model that just doesn't work." The Orlando Sentinel's Bianchi: "I'm shocked that the (AAC) commissioner, Mike Aresco and the other AAC schools, the others ADs, haven't spoken up. And the other conferences. Where's the Mountain West? Why is Danny White the lone voice in the room here? If you want access to the big-boy playoffs, you're going to have to rattle some cages. It's the only way to get in." (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
NYT's Tracy with a look at the quarterback transfer phenomenon in college FB that's highlighted by a really cool interactive graphic showing movement around the nation. Tracy notes transfer QBs who have won the Heisman & been #1 draft picks, two more who are leading top-ranked sides this season (Oklahoma & LSU) & another who went on to win a Super Bowl (can you name him?). Current West Virginia play-caller & former Florida student-athlete Grier: "The fact that coaches can come and go as they please and you get a whole new staff that you weren’t expecting and is trying to go in a different direction — you should have the ability to transfer." (link)

Leading MBB media voice Davis pens for The Athletic on reforms the sport should enact to better the landscape. 1) Doesn't want pay-for-play, but advocates for a "split" of money with student-athlete proceeds going into escrow until they exit college; 2) "Leave the sneaker companies alone"; 3) Give coaches more opportunities, not less, to interact with prospective student-athletes to ensure better commitment choices; 4) "Agents will be open for business"; 5) Install the Hockey model for the NBA Draft whereas every student-athlete would be eligible for the Draft & if selected, their rights would stay with the respective NBA franchise, even if the best immediate move is to return to college; 6) Remove all restrictions on practice limits; and, 7) No more restrictions on where transfers can land. Conclusion: "I don’t believe amateurism is a sham. It just needs to be updated. And that requires bold, meaningful reform, not some tweaks that won’t come close to fixing the problems that have been in place for so long." (link)
Twenty-two years of leadership is coming to an end as Allstate Sugar Bowl CEO Hoolahan is hanging it up as CEO, will be succeeded by longtime COO Hundley. Hoolahan: "I feel very good about it. The best thing is leaving the job in good order. Jeff has been faithful, loyal and talented. That’s been my mindset about him for a long time, and this is certainly well deserved for him." Hundley calls it a "dream come true," notes the union in which he & Hoolahan operated with for so many years. (link)
Is a fueling station, nutrition bar or training table only as good as its makers? At Missouri, Asst. Director of Performance Nutrition Johnson is known as the milkshake master. Last FB season amid a losing streak, Johnson upped his flavor game to make things fun for Tiger student-athletes & hasn't looked back since. There's a popular s'mores blend, mango punch & the regular inclusion of spinach as a healthy ingredient, though with the key of masking the taste. Johnson sees it sorta like mama's home cooking, "Meals are all about family and friends and good times." More. (link)
As you turn on ESPN College GameDay here in a bit, Director Rodney Perez will be directing the show. You've probably never heard of Rodney Perez. Show lead Rece Davis on Perez's influence, "He goes to great lengths to make sure that he understands the vision that we have for the show, both from a philosophical level and on a segment-by-segment basis. He has to be aware of the crowd, the signs, what’s happening on the set and find a way to make it tell a story. […] His real genius is picking the sites for GameDay. Not the schools, we don’t let him do that (kidding). He fought tooth and nail for our spot beside the lake at Miami. That location in the heart of campus – where GameDay had never been before – enhanced the show in spectacular fashion." (link)
Interesting piece of drama from the Forbes world as the site removed an article by contributor & Southern Utah economics professor Berri that argued WNBA players should make more money in an effort to drive star power. Berri pointed to the G League's new $125K select contracts for some prospective MBB student-athletes compared to the $56K base of WNBA MVP & former UConn standout Stewart. The NBA reportedly pushed back on the piece to Forbes, which has now cut ties with Berri & called his piece "misleading" & "sloppy," among other things. Berri: "The story I’m telling is really simple. You’ve made this gesture toward the G League to pay them more money and that’s an investment, but the WNBA wants more money and you call that a cost. That, to me, is the story." More. (link)
TV/OTT: On a number of occasions, Netflix leaders have publicly stated they have no plans to bid on live sports rights. However, LA Clippers owner & former Microsoft boss Ballmer isn't so sure, "Reed says sports is an interesting content type: It is not replaceable. They have built their new model on non-replaceable content." Ballmer also believes as other big time OTT services hit the market, like DisneyFlix (not the actual name, but you get the drift), Netflix may have to further diversify its offerings. But, taking things one step further, Ballmer thinks leagues need to seriously consider going direct to consumer, "Sports leagues are popular enough that if the NFL wanted to have all games on NFL.com, they could. And they could reach every place Netflix reaches." (link); Awful Announcing reports ESPN is looking to revive its daily MLB show, as well as secure more MLB rights. (link); Here's a really useful chart illustrating which OTT platforms are using which backend infrastructure platforms. BAMTech runs some of the big boys, but they're not without competition. (link)
"It’s disappointing for everybody involved,. When you’re a coach, and are in this league, every coach in this league has an expectation of winning conference championships and national championships. And almost every school in this league has the ability to do that. Malzahn and I] just talk about making sure we’re renewing our commitment to this football program, so we can be in the mix year in and year out." That's the latest from Auburn AD Greene on the state of the Tigers FB program. Additionally, "I want fans, I want people to know that we’re committed to having a successful football program. That may be a football building. That may be a recruiting building. That may be a coaches contract." (link)
More from Pitt AD Lyke as she hints toward being close to finalizing games on the Panther's future FB schedules. Lyke: "I think we have one more contract to get in and then we'll be able to reveal I don't know how many years' worth, but several years' worth of non-conference scheduling." Says "perhaps" the Panther's opening weekend opponent next season will be from the ACC as the ACC Network will be launching. She also points to a secondary logo being still in the works. In the next two years, Pitt will add a third floor to the Petersen Sports Complex, which will provide team meeting and film rooms as well as coaches offices for both soccer programs, baseball and softball. (link)
With just days left before the final vote, San Diego State AD Wicker makes a final push for the Aztecs' version of the plans for Mission Valley, part of Measure G on the ballot. "It's a great community-based stadium, it's a stadium that is built for football and for soccer, we were very intentional with our architects that it needed to be something that accommodated both. It is also easily expandable, as we continue to build our football program and we move into a stadium in the coming years we can, and most importantly it is the expansion of higher education. SDSU is a $5.6B economic impact to the region every year. Over 60% of our living alumni are here, this drives San Diego. This is a legacy event that benefits San Diego and our sons, daughters and grandchildren forever as opposed to a development that plays for a soccer team." (link)
A state Superior Court Judge ruled this week that Connecticut did not violate state ethics codes in hiring tight ends coach Corey Edsall, son of Huskies FB HC Randy Edsall. Shortall said the state ethics board "abused its discretion" and was "clearly erroneous" in its key ruling in the case. He went on to say the board did not give credence to UConn's plans for oversight of the position, which intentionally prevented the elder Edsall from directly overseeing his son. Prez Herbst: "We are gratified that the judge unambiguously agreed. We look forward to moving on." (link)
More Facilities: Southern Utah celebrated the opening of the George S. Eccles Sports Performance Center yesterday. The $1.8M building features a "comprehensive" weight room, mock-up football field and nutrition center. AD Corum calls it a "game changer." (link); Arizona State with a new practice facility and home for Sun Devil Golf at Papago Golf Course, it will be named the Thunderbirds Golf Complex after a "generous" donation from the Thunderbirds organization. Built by Rummel Construction, the 7,000-square-foot facility features a grand entry lobby, national championship displays, gym and locker rooms for both programs, fueling station, study lounge, team lounge and indoor hitting bays, among other things. ASU alum and PGA star Mickelson designed the four-acre practice area. (link); UNLV unveils photos of the new Body Gaming videoboard at the Thomas & Mack Center. (link)
Also Noticed: South Carolina FB gets Akron on the home schedule for December 1 as the Gamecocks' and Zips' 12th game. (link); USF WBB senior student-athlete Laksa pens a "personal letter to the world" detailing the history of her basketball upbringing  and her experience representing her native Latvia in the FIBA World Cup. (link); Niagara extends MBB HC Casey through the 2021-22 season. (link); Fanatics will end its NASCAR Trackside deal six years early, but is expected to continue to manage the sport's e-commerce site. (link); Temple-UCF drew a 0.8 rating and 1.19M viewers on ESPN, up 53% and 57%, respectively, from last year's Navy-Temple matchup. (link); Classy move by the UVA Alumni Association for last night's game with Pitt, instead of traditional game day buttons being passed out, opted for stickers with "We Stand With Pittsburgh" written on them. (link); Former Nike Marketing Manager Azavedo, who worked for the Swoosh from 1993-97 and again from 2007-15 joins the pay and gender discrimination lawsuit against the company, saying she was passed over for promotions and was "constantly berated and belittled."
