AD Spataro: "Our top priority in all this is the health and welfare of our student-athletes. The senior leadership looked at the ever-changing landscape both within our current conference and college athletics as a whole. With this review it became clear that we needed to strategically align ourselves to more regional competition to decrease travel and missed class time, while also providing the best competitive environment for our entire community. The Texas Woman's student body voted down a referendum that would have instituted TWU's first-ever Athletics Fee of $12 per credit hour, up to $180 per semester. The funds would have gone toward equipment, facility upgrades and potentially reducing student service fees. AD Mott: "Although I am disappointed that the Athletics Fee referendum did not pass, I am forever blessed by the opportunities I had this fall semester to meet with students, faculty and staff to discuss the growth of Pioneer Athletics and the value we bring to Texas Woman's University. I am grateful for the work of our coaches, staff and, especially, our student-athletes to engage our student body in the process this fall. Corum on what this could mean for an AD or school president: "I was sitting in a president's cabinet meeting when we heard [Degree Insurance's] presentation, when NIL was beginning.... and the early stages of the transfer portal. Gee v NCAA updates from Law360: "A former NCAA medical committee member who is currently UCLA's football team physician defended the NCAA's decision not to create rules limiting concussed athletes from playing, testifying Thursday in a California jury trial over a college linebacker's death that the science on concussions isn't 'sound' and that warning players about concussions would unnecessarily worry them. ..." Meanwhile, NFL Senior Advisor/CTE expert Cantu notes: "There still needs to be way more education for the athlete. They have to know what the [concussion] symptoms are so they can recognize them." He added that improper playing techniques are a "huge problem to this day." As part of his testimony, Cantu held that CTE was, in fact, a major cause of the health problems that led to Gee’s death.
