(Watch) Managing The Human Element: Eastern Michigan’s Wetherbee & San Jose State’s Tuite
Pac-12 Media Day:
+ Commish Scott touched on a number of key items during his intro remarks. Brushes aside last year's bowl record for the league, "we've got a strong, deep, and highly competitive conference that provides our fans with great match-ups every week" & fully leverages the 'Conference of Champions' label. Thirty games will be included this season in the program to continue cutting down on the length & broadcasts of FB matchups. The Pac-12 Networks will be on-campus all 12 weeks with its studio show. Promotes all the conference is doing on the student-athlete health & wellness front. Bullish on the full control the Pac-12 will have with its entire rights come the mid-20s. Core thesis: "There are different ways to measure success in college sports. The scorecard we think matters, and that I know our university presidents and athletics directors care about most is academic and athletic excellence across all sports. By this measure, we're achieving unmatched success." More. (link)
+ During his Q&A period, Scott says he does not expect the DirecTV negotiations to advance, notes FANG's (Facebook, Apple, Netflix & Google) "slow, but sure" acquisition of sports rights, points to more FB games in Asia & Australia, calls Pac-12 Networks revenue "stable," not pushing for integrity fees on the sports gambling front, on the revenue gap with other 'P5' leagues, "Money is important, but it’s certainly not the most important ingredient to success." (link, link)
+ Arizona AD Heeke on the comments of stand-out student-athlete Tate & his tweets back during the HC search, "Khalil and I have a great relationship. Speculating and hypothesizing about the decision-making process, without any knowledge of it is, in my opinion, inappropriate and unfounded. Khalil and our other student-athletes, they can talk to me at any time. It’s important for me to get their perspective. That’s a very valuable tool. […] I’m also very confident in the process I use internally to get to the ultimate selection of a head coach." (link)
William & Mary updates its brand & logo. "Re-energize" is a good word used in the release. The interlocked W&M isn't going anywhere, just gets a fresh new look. A "more aggressive" Griffin has been added to the full new primary mark. Tribe AD Huge: "While we remain the Tribe, the new logo provides us with a more powerful connection to the university and will allow us to more seamlessly elevate the entire institution's visibility on a national scale." (link); Wisconsin-Green Bay also did some work on its look thanks to assistance from Joe Bosack & Co. UWGB AD Guthrie: "The new additions provide us a cutting-edge look and will deliver consistency across our various channels in representing the Phoenix." Also, an announcement is coming soon from the Phoenix on a major facility upgrade. (link - release, link - full logo sheet)
On the heels of unveiling a new locker room for his program, Georgia Tech FB HC Johnson says Yellow Jackets AD Stansbury "gets it." Johnson: "I mean, he was, like (here, Johnson made a look of horror) when he walked in and saw what we were dealing with. It’s like, you couldn’t say it as a head coach because if you do – 'Well, he’s making excuses.' But it’s refreshing to have the AD come in and go, 'Hey, look, we’ve been playing with our hands tied behind our back.' So you look forward to that." Further, Johnson believes he's back on the same page with leadership of the department, calls Stansbury a "good partner." (link)
A handful of Florida FB student-athletes are up against conduct violations for on-campus incidents involving airsoft guns. Further, the parties involved from outside the institution include "a Gainesville-area gambler." As part of the story, Gators student-athlete Lewis told university police he & his peers had a "good relationship (with the gambler) while the football team was winning, but when they began losing, (he) would call them 'garbage' and would complain about losing money after he bet on football games." No comment yet from the university or athletic department. (link)
USA Today's Brennan writes on the situation surrounding Arizona State Swim HC & former Olympic mainstay Bowman, points to previous comments by ASU Prez Crow in connection to Penn State & Michigan State, "It's zero tolerance. You can't always prevent something from happening, but you can take immediate action the second you hear about it. If we heard from someone complaints of physical abuse, sexual abuse, inappropriate conduct, the first thing we would do is investigate. If it turns out these things were true, all those people would be turned over to the police or fired." Brennan: "Crow said those words in March. Four months later, they’re more meaningful than ever." (link)
SM2 CEO Cecil discusses Ohio State's reputation management going forward and how it will weather their crisis storm with the Columbus Dispatch. Cecil defines a crisis as "anything that threatens that business and can result in financial loss or tarnished reputation or legal or regulatory action." As a litigation and sports crisis expert she adds, "People will now want to know three things about the Strauss situation, 'What happened, why it happened, and what steps are being taken to ensure that it doesn’t happen again.' They should be looking forward, to ensure audiences, all of their audiences — including students, future students, faculty, staff, boosters, corporate sponsors, recruits — that OSU will meet and exceed the standards expected of an educational institution." (link)
The Athletic's Mandel also with a take on Ohio State FB HC Meyer's handling of the Smith situation. Mandel: "Tuesday’s comments shared more in common with the many tone-deaf authority figures at other schools with recent scandals involving violence against women. In 2018, people don’t want to hear 'he said, she said' from powerful leaders like Meyer. They expect better. And because of that, he’ll lose much of the benefit of the doubt he’d built up over the past five years." (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Private planes are certainly a staple for HCs on the recruiting trail & Georgia FB HC Smart has supplemented his air travel agenda with a number of helicopter trips since taking over the Bulldogs in December of 2015. Total cost has been upwards of $70K, but UGA AD McGarity keeps the investment in perspective, "Your recruiting budget is north of $2 million, so I think when you look at the grand scheme of things, it’s a very, very, very small part of the recruiting budget. It’s only used like 10 times just for recruiting in a little over two years. Once you take it into context, it just illustrates it’s used very infrequently." LSU HC Orgeron also says getting to some games by helicopter is simply the only efficient way, travels in such a fashion to recruit for the Tigers. (link)

"Regarding hockey and football, I know there was a report done. Obviously I have not started, so I haven't seen that report. So I've gotta look at it. I think the core is to make sure the sports we have here right now are successful and in position to be successful." That was new Oakland AD Waterfield when asked about the potential of adding FB & Hockey squads for the Grizzlies during his intro presser. Waterfield also pointed to investment in facilities, "Nothing that ever meant anything to me has ever been accomplished without hard work, and so then it just becomes raising the money and building those facilities and prioritizing them." (link)
Facilities: The Excellence Academy at Indiana's Memorial Stadium will be ready for the start of classes next month, completes the three-part project that AD Glass envisioned to help grow the Hoosiers "academically, athletically and personally, better than anywhere else in the country." Included in the EA are career development facilities, improved medical and training spaces and a new dining area. Upper-level terrace open to fans on game days with interactive activities for kids. (link); Arkansas State continues to make progress on the north end zone expansion project, AD Mohajir expects the majority of the project to be ready before first kick, but one concession area may not be. 60 days of rain to blame for the delays. (link); Boston College set to officially open the $52.6M Fish Field House on August 3 when preseason FB camp begins. The 115,700 square-foot facility is named in recognition of the leadership gift from former BC BoT Chair Fish and features a full AstroTurf field, 12K space for strength & conditioning needs and will provide indoor space for Football and "other varsity sports." AD Jarmond calls it a "game-changer for BC Athletics." (link)
More Legal Matters: Former USC Women's Volleyball HC Haley has filed an age discrimination & harassment lawsuit against the institution & points to Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Heinel as having "personally engaged in a campaign to unlawfully harass Haley due to his age." Haley is seeking $2M, plus punitive damages & attorney fees. USC says it's reviewing Haley's demand for arbitration. (link); LEAD1 boss McMillen's 'Byte of the Week' is on retaliation lawsuits. Overview: "An unintended consequence of Title IX has been the increased litigation in federal courts where female college coaches' and administrators sue their universities for sex discrimination. Title IX sets no limits on the amount of money damages that a plaintiff may be awarded and lawsuits often settle for significant amounts, sometimes millions of dollars." Watch. (link); A second formal complaint has been filed to the New Mexico Attorney General's Office on the lack of transparency for the process that led to New Mexico deciding to eliminate four sports. The AG's office is expected to thoroughly review the complaints. (link); Looks like UCF leaders are pushing for former FB student-athlete & You Tuber De La Haye "to pay their legal fees stemming from his First Amendment lawsuit—and to turn over his financial records to UCF’s lawyers." (link)
Remember last year when Hawaii FB HC Rolovich had an Elvis impersonator alongside him at Mountain West media days? Well he upped his game this year and brought a Britney Spears lookalike, telling Commish Thompson "Whoops, I did it again, Commish." Thompson on Rolovich's stunt: "That’s him. He enjoys life. I don’t think it makes him any less competitive. These are some of the things he does." Pretty clever. (link)

Dallas Mavericks AC Boucek is pregnant and was fully transparent about that fact before being hired into the uniquely created position of "assistant to the basketball staff/special projects," a non-traveling coaching position. Boucek will watch games, scout opponents and provide feedback but not have to travel and thus be able to stay home for at least the first six months of her soon-to-be-born child's life. Mavs HC Carlisle: "This is an important moment for our league. Qualified women are a reality. They are bright. They are ass-kickers. They belong in this league. They should not have to compromise the dream of motherhood for professional success." Lots here, including this from San Antonio Spurs AC Hammon: "Women get pregnant in every workforce. There are female CEOs who get pregnant. This should be no different. It speaks to how the NBA is starting to value women in leadership roles. What the Mavs are doing is symbolic of how they see Jenny's value -- that they understand that to get that value, to get the pay out, these first six months are part of the process." (link)

As Auburn AD Greene prepares for his first FB season on The Plains, he opens up about what he's looking for from the Tigers and HC Malzahn this season: "I think the expectations are always high, and they should be high. Our entire athletic department puts a lot of energy into putting a good product on the field and making sure our fans are enjoying themselves right there on the Plains. I tend to look at is as an opportunity. We've got one of the toughest schedules in college football... So, there's an opportunity for us to showcase our talents and I'm really looking forward to watching our team grow and evolve over the course of the season. Obviously, we want to be in the hunt for one of those final four teams in the College Football Playoff." Greene also points to enjoying some of Auburn's gameday traditions for the first time.  (link)
Boise State FB HC Harsin and AD Apsey want to do a better job of honoring the history of the program. Apsey: "We’ve talked about a ring of honor. We’ve talked about championship banners. We’ve talked about flying flags above the stadium. We’ve talked about all that stuff. Overall, we just think we have to do a better job recognizing our success in our facilities. I think a ring of honor is a great idea if we can find a way to get it done and we’ll certainly try to do that sooner rather than later." Renovating the hall of fame is on Apsey's list of facility upgrades, but with the Broncos adding baseball to the portfolio, the upgrade could be a ways away. Harsin points to the turf at Albertsons Stadium as his most pressing need as the current surface was installed in 2010. (link)
Hawaii gets a $450K gift from The California Hotel for naming rights for the volleyball court at the Stan Sheriff Center. AD Matlin: "Mr. Boyd and his team have been long-time supporters of our Rainbow Wahine and Warrior student athletes. This is a difference-making gift that will directly benefit our student-athletes both in the classroom and on the field of competition." TCH already has the title sponsorship for the Island Showdown Trophy, which is the rivalry FB game between UNLV and the Warriors. (link)
Another solid 1.Question convo, this one as @TaiMBrown hosts Sacramento State Assoc. AD for External Affairs Jennings & the pair jump into talk around key follow-up questions during development visits, management of staff & his transition from the corporate world to college athletics. Jennings: "In development you have to understand relationships....essentially you have to understand that people give to people. […] My background in the finance industry helped me to understand that the worst thing someone can say is ‘no.’ […] I always ask a potential donor who says they cannot contribute, 'not now or not ever?' […] You have to understand that you never take the brand off so you have to enjoy the work you do." More. (link)
Also Noticed: A bit of hubbub around Conference USA supporters on Twitter as Tulane AD Dannen reportedly said in a recent podcast, "We're trying to stand up in the American. And it's totally different. Nothing against Southern Miss and UTEP, but Houston and Memphis are not Southern Miss and UTEP. So trying to climb back up has really been a struggle." (link); WMT launches Georgia Tech's new website & SIDEARM helps Pitt go live with its new 'Pitt Script for Life' presence dedicated to "Future, Current and Forever Panthers."
