East Carolina Special Adviser to the Chancellor & former Tennessee AD Hart will stick around Greenville through the FB season to make sure the ship is steady for the Pirates. Hart maintains that he's focused on big-picture & financial items far more than personnel, "In (Staton’s) eyes and his mind, he said he felt like we had more assessment to do. We haven’t discussed (Hart as a permanent AD), but we are just trying to take it visit by visit to get this assessment complete so that (Staton) can have a real good sense of the direction he wants to go." All said, Hart will have earned $281K+ for his nine-month advisory role, works out to $31,250 per month. (link)
North Texas boss Baker gets a new six-year deal that could keep him in Denton through 2024. Base pay goes from $375K to $450K, plus $25K annual raises. UNT Prez Smatresk: "I believe Wren is one of the most talented young ADs in the country, and we want to keep him and his team happy here as part of our Mean Green family." Baker: "I am humbled and overwhelmed. I wasn’t necessarily expecting or looking for a new deal. When the president first approached me, he asked what the school needed to do to keep me happy. I told him I was happy. It’s a credit to the people who worked hard to see us be a success." The Mean Green also announced upgraded agreements for FB HC Littrell (one-year extension, base from $900K to $1.2M).  MBB boss McCasland (one-year extension, $30K annual retention bonus added) and WBB HC Mitchell (two-year extension, $20K increase to base that is now $195K). (link)
Wake Forest AD Wellman says he's "sitting tight" as the legal process around on-leave MBB AC Jones proceeds. Wellman on $50M worth of new facilities set to be open, "What we want is for facilities to be an asset. They were a liability in the recruitment game and they were a liability once our players got here, in training our players the way you want to be able to train them. With the facilities that are coming on line now, we will be in as good a position as anyone in the country." (link)
A decision may come over the next two days by the Idaho State Board of Education on the future of on-leave Idaho AD Spear. Today, the group will go into executive session to "consider the evaluation, dismissal or disciplining of, or to hear complaints or charges brought against, a public officer, employee, staff member or individual agent, or public school student." Thursday's meeting will take action on the personnel decisions discussed today. (link)
Maryland: University Prez Loh stepped to the podium yesterday & took legal & moral responsibility for missteps by his institution that led to the passing of late FB student-athlete McNair. Loh also pointed to a four-person panel who will thoroughly review the culture of the FB program Terps AD Evans followed Loh, "We have learned that Jordan did not receive appropriate medical care, and mistakes were made by some of our athletic training personnel." More. (linklink); Strength & Conditioning leader Court parts ways with UMD, exits with a $315K settlement. In part, "I am blessed for the relationships I have built and wish nothing but success for our team." (link, link); The Athletic's Auerbach asked Evans if he should be responsible for the culture around the FB program. Evans: "I believe I am the one who can lead us through these very difficult time." (link); Sports Illustrated legal expert McCann notes the "massive legal consequences" of Loh taking onus of McNair's passing, which he calls "astonishing." McCann: "An admission can eliminate leverage the client would otherwise have to bargain a favorable settlement. Particularly early on in a dispute, sometimes the preferred tactic is to muddy the waters through deflection and overcomplication. […] Loh and McNair’s statements strongly imply that the school and its insurance companies are confident that they will be able to reach a settlement with McNair’s family. A settlement would include a substantial monetary payment to McNair’s family in exchange for the family contractually relinquishing any legal claims it may have against the school." McCann also says the four-person investigatory panel isn't really independent & won't have subpoena power, also believes NCAA sanctions could be a result down the road for the Terps. (link); Washington Post big name Svrluga takes Maryland to task, questions a number of comments made by Evans during the presser, believes the entire university brand "has been diminished" as a result of how the situation was handled. (link); The Baltimore Sun's Schmuck: "After Jordan McNair's death, why isn't Maryland athletic director Evans on leave too?" (link); SB Nation's Godfrey on South Carolina HC Muschamp's comments, 1) "Muschamp’s primary, passionate concern is not for the victim but rather loyalty to another coach"; and, 2) "As for the semantic: Muschamp is hypocritical for chastising the use of anonymous sources because (of course) he is one himself." (link)
The Dallas Morning News' Baby writes on an incident at Texas A&M back in the spring when FB student-athlete Martin "started acting funny" after a workout in 83-degree weather. Martin's body temperature spiked to 106, but he was immediately placed in an ice tub as medics were called to the scene. Martin's father says the Aggies training staff "likely saved his (son's) life." Baby: "The incident showed what could happen, even with the right precautionary measures in place. But it also showed heatstrokes don't have to result in a tragic ending." (link)
Former Ohio State FB AC Smith met with investigators for multiple hours yesterday. Smith's attorneys say he didn't refuse to answer a single question, also, "The lawyers conducting the interview were thoroughly prepared and very exhaustive in their question of Zach. He reiterated everything he said in his ESPN interview." (link)

SBJ media headliner Ourand digs in on why ESPN & Turner are investing so much into soccer rights around the globe. Durand says new ESPN Prez Pitaro is just as committed to soccer as former boss Skipper, but Pitaro "will use it as a cornerstone for ESPN's streaming service." Turner brass loves soccer for the strategy of "target(ing) sports that have passionate followings that schedule their games outside of prime time in the United States." There's also this small little detail from Ourand, "ESPN is losing subscribers. Its rights fee payouts are increasing. But it still found enough money to pay an increase for Serie A and FA Cup rights. For more than a decade, readers have asked me to write about the rights bubble that is about to burst. If this deal is an indication, it’s not close to happening yet. ESPN’s deal proves that media companies still are committed to paying a big rights fee for the sports they value." (link)

The Tennessean's Rexrode says Vanderbilt Chancellor Zeppos "can't disrespect his own people over athletics anymore." Rexrode on Zeppos' quiet response to the need for new FB facility upgrades in Nashville & claims of "athletics sabotage" from sources inside the university, "It’s time for Zeppos to talk. Past time, actually. […] Pick a TV station. Do a selfie video. Better yet, have an open discussion, town-hall style. Take these fair questions and give honest answers. A sterile press release will not suffice, though it would be progress at this point. There’s so much Zeppos can do to advance this discussion, even if his answers aren’t what people in Vanderbilt athletics or fans of Vanderbilt want to hear. This is not about pointing a finger at him, it’s about imploring him to share his insights. […] Maybe Zeppos believes Vanderbilt football should drop down in classification to Division II. Or maybe he questions the future of the sport. He would not be alone in that. I don’t think the appetite for football is going to wane significantly in our lifetimes — even though youth participation is declining — but it’s a discussion worth having. There’s no reason to pour tens of millions into something you think will be obsolete in a couple of decades. His answers may not make everyone happy. But refusing to give any is infuriating. And yes, disrespectful." A bit more. (link)
With outgoing AD McClelland headed to oversee the SWAC, where will Texas Southern turn next? Texas Sports Nation's Solomon says the university has massive shoes to fill as McClelland was not just one of the best ADs in the state, but one of the best in the nation. Solomon credits McClelland for not only the fortunes at TSU, but also the solid footing of Prairie View A&M as he previously led the Panthers. Solomon: "Despite having to battle through heavy NCAA sanctions, McClelland walks away from TSU with the university's athletic program not only in good standing academically with nearly triple the graduation rate, but having won a host of conference championships, including a school-record seven in the 2016-17 academic year. Thanks to McClelland's work – he fixed what was broke – the next AD at TSU should be fine." (link)
AthleticDirectorU gets Marshall DC Fuller, Columbia OC Fabish, Miami (OH) Co-OC Koehler & The Athletic's Auerbach for an Experts' Roundtable on FB preseason camp. Koehler outlines three goals for camp: 1) Comprehensive evaluation of student-athletes per position; 2) Create tangible goals for the month of August & all 13 weeks of the season; and, 3) Define offensive & defensive identities. Auerbach notes how programs try to get ahead of positive developments in the preseason, but even if camp is closed some stories aren't "going away." Psychologically, Fabish points to consistent messaging & as many game-like situations as possible to get his side ready. Lots more. (link)
Tennessee & UConn WBB will meet again on the hardwood in 2020 after a 13-year break. It's a two-year deal with games in '20 & '21, the first in Storrs & the follow-up in Knoxvegas. SB Nation's Ellentuck: "How quickly the rivalry will feel as one without Summitt in the arena is to be determined, but the history of both programs could provide the fuel it needs to push this series back to where it should be. The talent will certainly be there." (link, link)
The CAA announces its broadcast engagements for the upcoming FB season, which includes 11 'Game of the Week' kicks on CBS Digital & another 10 on Fox Sports Go. Looks like there's also one on ESPNU, three on ESPN+, plus a number of others on the likes of SNY & NBC Sports Washington. Overall: 55 kicks, including 36 league matchups. (link); After profiles of Notre Dame, Florida State & Navy over the last couple of seasons, Showtime won't highlight a college program in it's "A Season With" series this year, but will continue to look for the right partner in years to come. "I haven’t had one transfer who has underachieved in my time on the bench, whether it be going on to the NBA or high-level overseas leagues. I’m not going to arrogantly say that I’m the best transfer recruiter in the country, but the results do speak volumes." That's St. John's MBB AC Abdelmassih, who has basically crowned himself the king of MBB transfers. The Athletic's Lilly says Abdelmassih has an "advanced degree in backchannel communications," though Abdelmassih sees it more as giving some student-athletes their last chance to excel on the court. Former Iowa State HC & current Chicago Bulls' boss Hoiberg on his time with Abdelmassih in Ames, "Going with transfers was the fastest way for the team to get competitive in a hurry. We were able to build chemistry and take the program to a different level." (link)

Northeastern rolls out a new look, including the 'King Husky' primary logo, which was "inspired by tattoo art." There's also a quartet of new secondary marks, a fresh wordmark described as "simple and utilitarian," plus a really cool 3D rendering. AD Konya: "We wanted to create a bold, innovative and striking new concept. Our team worked tirelessly to develop an identity unique and distinctive to Northeastern, and I think we hit a homerun. We believe these marks, along with an integrated marketing plan, show the vibrancy of Northeastern Athletics and is a product that our loyal constituents will gravitate towards." (link - release, link - video unveiling, link - logo sheet, link - visual recap)
CBSSports.com's Dodd points to the developments at Maryland as another reason why student-athletes need a union. Dodd gets going with, "Forget all the noise about getting paid past cost of attendance or the name, image and likeness debate. Your lives are at stake, boys and girls. The death of a Maryland football player is the most recent, sad reminder. Someone has to be in charge. The well-heeled adults running a lot of these colleges and athletic departments simply are not." More, "A union is an obvious safety net. There is a reason NFL players have collectively bargained an average of less than one fully added practice during the regular season. Or why players are paid for putting their bodies on the line at offseason organized team activities (OTAs). It's because they can. They are the game, the labor force. Amateur college athletes have none of that leverage. It shows." (link)
Legal Matters: U.S. District Court Judge Wilken decides she will allow evidence from the O'Bannon case in next month's Jenkins case proceedings, "overriding multiple objections from both the sports body and the students." (link); Another from Law360: "Former Northwestern Wildcats (MBB) player Johnnie Vassar filed a one-paragraph notice of voluntary dismissal on Friday, which gives no insight into the reasoning behind his decision." Vassar was suing the NCAA on its one-year in residence transfer rule. (link); U.S. Federal Judge Hale dismisses former Louisville MBB HC Pitino's suit against Adidas, says Oregon is the right jurisdiction, but the case should be resolved via arbitration. North Texas looks to leverage pro wrestling as a tool to put fans in the stands for its FB season-opener against SMU. In what looks to be an industry first, post-game will feature the likes of the Von Erich family, "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan & "Iceman" King Parsons, as well as notable announcers Jim Ross & Bill Mercer. UNT AD Baker: "We are always looking for ways to make our game day environment unique and exciting. The Mean Green has deep roots with professional wrestling with connections to the Von Erichs, Bill Mercer, Stone Cold Steve Austin and others. Bringing two great traditions together to entertain fans is going to be fun." (link)

(link); According to StubHub, for the first time in five years Michigan is not the most in-demand FB program, having been supplanted by Alabama. The Crimson Tide's home schedule and recent title have led to a 45% increase in demand for tix in 2018. (link)
