Ohio State FB HC Meyer's suspension is over as he sits for an interview with ESPN's Rinaldi. Of note from Meyer, "I erred when I made a decision to do the best I can to help stabilize that situation. And one of the things I look back now -- I probably should've fired him. […] I was told that it was not domestic violence, that she threw him out of the house and that there were going to be no charges. I was completely reliant on information from law enforcement. There was no charges. […] She has reasoning for why she didn't react and I'm not here to speak for Shelley, but she had a reasoning and her reasoning was what it was. That's why she did not alert me or just go anywhere else with it. […] I thought the best thing I could do with a very troubled marriage, with a child custody issue going on. And I really thought it through. I thought the best thing I could do is try to help stabilize this thing. If I fire him at the time, sever that relationship, and I see these two young kids. And that's why I've always thought, how do you help stabilize someone. At the time I thought I was doing the right thing." More. (link); Sports Illustrated legal expert McCann: "Urban Meyer's interview with Tom Rinaldi is probably the closest we'll see to live 'testimony' by Meyer. Much like a skilled attorney conducting cross-examination, Rinaldi asked Qs that required specific answers. One key difference: Meyer wasn't under oath, so no risk of perjury." (link)
Yahoo's Wetzel: "So there was Meyer on Sunday morning, sitting inside his house, sitting across from ESPN’s Tom Rinaldi, and he was, without directly saying so, saying enough to convey a very simple message to those inclined to follow it: Neither he nor his wife, Shelley, believes Courtney Smith’s allegations of domestic abuse." (link); Yahoo's Forde believes Interim Bucks HC Day deserves more credit for keeping the ship together in Meyer's absence. Forde: "After two milk runs against overmatched Oregon State and Rutgers, the Buckeyes found themselves in a battle Saturday night. The interim coach was under real pressure. And he handled it perfectly. Ryan Day will recede from the spotlight again now, relieved to be doing so. But it’s nice to go out undefeated." (link)
More on a potential new stand-alone FB building at Auburn as Tigers AD Greene & Prez Leath showed the Board of Trustees renderings late last week, as well as delivered comparisons at other SEC institutions. Greene: "...we still have what I would consider a multi-use building, when our peers, both traditional powers and others who may not be traditional powers in our league, have decided to invest in this venture." Greene notes how the new digs could open up space in the Coliseum, even though he says he's coming to learn at some point it will be torn down. Leath says athletics has been informed of progress markers it needs to meet in order to bring a formal proposal, "They're making great progress, but they're not there yet." (link)
UW-Milwaukee AD Braun & Towson AD Leonard chat with Dartmouth Senior Assoc. AD for Varsity Programs/SWA Kelly on the planning stages of new facilities. Braun: "You can get carried away with bells and whistles of new facilities, but the impact and experience of our Student-Athletes is what is really important. […] Creating the case, the story and inspiring people is the baseline when fundraising for a new facility." Leonard: "I’m not trying to build the Taj Mahal, I’m trying to build efficiency. What is going to be the most efficient use of our money and how is this new facility going to make our Student-Athletes time and experience more efficient? […] I’m very involved in the beginning a a new facility, in terms of trying to develop our concept, our vision, and what we are trying to accomplish, but after that process, I let my staff do their job." Montana State AD Costello Q&As with MontanaSports.com. On MBB HC Fish only having a single year left on his contract, "Every year we sit down with coaches — well, with every staff member — and we do evaluations. There are a lot of great things that have been happening in that program. If you look at his first three years, there’s been steady progress every single year. We’ve had, our crowds have been getting bigger and bigger. I think last year, if he was sitting right here we would talk about it, it was a disappointment for both of us. But we have some things in place now to hopefully help them get over the hump. [...] We’ve got to win, we have to be competitive. Our ultimate goal here is to develop our teams to give them a chance and support them in a way that we have a chance to win conference championships and qualify for postseason tournaments and have a chance to play for a national championship." Costello also says Big Sky MBB is pushing to improve its national image & RPI by implementing some tenets from the Missouri Valley's playbook. More, including the arms race within the FCS. (link)
1.Question's Brown catches up with Air Force Academy Athletic Corporation CEO Hixson to discuss the complex setup of the revenue generation arm of Falcon Athletics, which has Hixson working closely with Air Force AD, Col. Jenn Block, but running the business side of athletics as a separate entity. Hixson also covers the meshing of military personnel and civilians to create a truly unique environment. Hixson: "It took almost eight or nine years to work through legislation and other things to figure out the lines of authority and how this thing would be set up. […] Col Jen Block and I work hand in hand on everything from contract negotiations with coaches to large scale corporate partnerships. […] The athletic department is a wonderful mesh of two worlds, in terms of military and civilians, and it makes it a really unique environment." More. (link)
Mid-major hoops scheduling guru Adams responds to a tweet by @Mid_Madness that points to the new scheduling model and the NET framework in play for the first time this year making things "hard to predict." Adams: "The true goal is to improve the C-USA tournament champion seed in the NCAA tournament. The 2nd bid is possible if lightning strikes but a better seed is the primary goal just as an FYI." If there's no obvious path of upward mobility in your department, what do you do? Duke Fuqua School of Business professor Clark: 1) Make yourself aware of the possibilities; 2) Seek out help; 3) Identify your own ideal opportunities; and, 4) Cultivate influential allies. Clark on that last point, "As you progress at your company and in your career, it’s essential to keep your mentors and sponsors informed about your progress, so they’re aware of new skills you’ve developed and your current career aspirations. Otherwise, even if you keep in regular touch about other matters, they’re unlikely to question or update their initial impression of you." In college athletics today, it seems this situation might apply most to aspiring digital/social creatives. (link)

The Lawrence Journal-World editorial board applauds Kansas AD Long for his "sensible approach to the remodel of Memorial Stadium." Specifically: "As Long knows, there is still much work to be done to get Kansas football to where it can compete with the other programs in the Big 12. All efforts should be focused first and foremost on getting the coaches and players necessary to win more consistently and put fans back in the stadium. When that happens, the Raise the Chant campaign will have a much greater chance of success." Villanova will make a few "neat enhancements" to this year's Hoops Mania, but will not feature a musical celebrity at the event. The focus will instead be on the latest NCAA title and the opening of the new Finneran Pavilion. Speaking of Finneran, the building will be ready October 1. Asst. AD for Marketing Shao: "I’m hoping that students will see this year as an exciting year to be able to get in the space. Maybe in the past they would have been excited about the music act coming in, and this year, maybe they’re excited about coming in and really supporting the team. I hope that students are going to be excited to welcome the team and have this new experience that no one else has been able to have previously. It will certainly be a different kind of draw, but I’m hoping that students will be just as excited." (link)
"The Supreme Court of Texas on Friday declined to hear a former Baylor University football official’s argument that his defamation claims against the university, its regents and Pepper Hamilton LLP over a report on the school's response to sexual assault allegations belong in arbitration. The court said it won't hear Colin Shillinglaw's appeal of a June decision by the Fifth Court of Appeals in Dallas affirming the trial court’s decision to dismiss his case and award attorney’s fees to the defendants, despite his arguments that the... Also Noticed: The length of the average CFB game is up one minute over last year, at 3 hours and 20 minutes. Texas leads all schools with an average of 4 hours and 5 minutes.
