"In this business, it's much easier to fall from the top to down beneath than to crawl up there, so you want to know if a guy’s got patience, if a guy will stand by you if a bad season occurs, something like that. Although we didn’t talk about that directly to that extent, you could definitely tell he would be a coach's AD." That's Kansas MBB HC Self on some of his lead-up conversations with new Jayhawks AD Long. Self also says FB has won in Lawrence before & can do so again in a process that just needs patience. "Loyalty" and "toughness" are the two traits Self indicates HCs value most in ADs. (link)
SEC FB fans aren't traveling to road games within the league like they used to & the conference office has started suggesting hosts released unwanted tickets quicker. Both Florida AD Stricklin & Alabama boss Byrne point to a "softening" of the marketplace when a couple of thousand tickets are introduced, however both also note the advantage of putting more home team supporters in the stands. Stricklin continues, believes we're going to see more facilities reduce in size to create more intimate fan experiences. Georgia AD McGarity says the reality is that a decent portion of the visiting team allotment are bad seats, which he thinks will also lead to more pep bands - instead of full bands - taken on the road to open up better inventory for fans. Lots of data included in the piece that squarely frames the downturn. (link)
New Cal State Bakersfield Prez Zelezny on her view of athletics, "I’m actually very proud of its trajectory. Very first day, you should know, I prioritized making sure that I had the athletic director’s (Kenneth “Ziggy” Siegfried) attention and that I took of a tour of all the facilities and met with most of the coaches. I wanted to see it first hand." Zelezny further lauds Siegfried, says her quick focus on athletics was symbolic for the overall university community & the greater city to see. Sounds like Zelezny plans to be alongside Siegfried for fundraising efforts & isn't trying to compare the financial state to others in the Big West until around 2020. More. (link); Bakersfield.com's Mettus asks the budget question with the Roadrunners headed into the Big West, points to needed facility upgrades & further funding of scholarships as only three of 16 programs get the max. Hawaii FB ticket sales are pacing down 13% year over year at the moment & Volleyball is also a bit behind at 6% down. So far, FB has moved 11,442 season packages. Last year 14,294 were sold in total. As for VB, 3,382 right now versus a 3,826 total haul in 2017. (link); North Dakota FB sales have dipped by around 650 season packages so far. "UND saw 5,296 season tickets across 1,545 accounts in 2017. Now, UND has 4,648 season tickets across 1,327 accounts." (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
There are currently Graduate Hotels in Ann Arbor, Athens, Berkeley, Charlottesville, Iowa City, Lincoln, Madison, Minneapolis, Oxford, Richmond, Seattle & Tempe with more coming in Bloomington, Columbus, Eugene, Nashville, New Haven, Palo Alto, Providence & Roosevelt Island. AJ Capital, the firm behind the college-inspired chain, boss Weprin profiled by the New York Times & interestingly, AJ Capital has Manning brothers, Eli & Peyton, close to the fold. The business model has worked with the rise of "helicopter parents," as much as it has for the nostalgia of alums returning to campus for all sorts of celebrations. Graduate Chief Creative Officer Alford on uniquely outfitting each property, "We want people to wake up and have a sense of place, and it should be secondary that they’re waking up at the Graduate Hotel." More, including Weprin's connection to Larry Levy & Jonathan Tisch. (link)

Texas has never counted Women's Gymnastics as a sport & Utah Senior Assoc. AD for Communications Abel says that's a good thing, competitively, for the rest of the nation, "I’m glad they didn’t add one. The rest of us would have been screwed. They’ve got really good club teams in Texas." Abel notes how the Utes lead the sport in attendance, but other programs like LSU, Oklahoma, UCLA, Alabama & Georgia are growing numbers quickly. A 1993 Title IX decision identified as the demarcation point in Austin, more on the sport's talent flow & injury potential. (link)
On the eve of the World Cup final, NYT's Drape examines why youth soccer participation is down by 14% over the past three years for youth ages 6 to 12. U.S. Soccer Chief Sport Development Officer Romeijn says parents needs to be further educated & might want to "win too bad," which results in sharp investment on individual coaching & training. Access to the sport by low-income youth also seems to be part of the situation as households with income of $100K+ supply 35% of players. (link)
New York Yankees digital leader Smith pens a blog on the solid social strategy from Wimbledon this year. Smith: "Original content is a great lever trying to capture attention. Whether you vary your executions or leverage design in unexpected and fresh ways, strong creative can disrupt in so many instances. Wimbledon understands this." Smith says the challenge for most sports properties hitting the right balance between voice & tone, but Wimbledon nails the mark without detracting from the overall brand. Wimbledon Head of Communications, Content and Digital Willis: "In terms of storytelling areas, we try to focus it roughly as follows: celebrate the sense of place, the traditions, the atmosphere, the fans; celebrate the excellence of the players, their stats, their celebrity; celebrate the sport, the history, the rivalries, the nationalities." Lots more, including many examples of content from this year's event. (link)
Good read on competition for your fans' entertainment dollar comes from The Ringer's Fennessey, "...in 2018—during a time of peak TV and ever-erupting news outrage, as social media throttles us and personal time is routinely intruded upon with the force of a rhinoceros—movies still matter." Count blockbusters like Black Panther & Avengers, as well as the seemingly-ubiquitous-yet-business-model-strapped MoviePass, as reasons for the uptick. However, the second half of the calendar year doesn't look to have many big titles set for release, which I suppose could be a good thing for those of you trying to sell tix. (link)
Fast Company: A promotion without a raise is a growing trend around corporate America, "39% of HR managers said it’s common for their company to award promotions without pay increases, a 17-point jump from 2011," per an OfficeTeam study. Human Resources expert Kiner says employees should give the opportunity thought based on the following guidelines: 1) Push for parameters, like a six-month trial run with a pay increase upon continuation; 2) Negotiate other parts of your compensation package other than money (work days/hours flexibility, additional vacation, etc.); and, 3) Focus on more of what you enjoy & less of what you don't. Key note: "In the long run, lack of alignment between responsibility and pay isn’t tenable for anyone." (link)

BYUtv will air 670 hours of sports during the upcoming competition seasons with all HD broadcasts at the center of a distribution move from KBYU-TV to the likes of DirecTV & Dish. BYU Broadcasting Managing Director Dunn on carriage in regions outside the Cougars' natural habitat, "That is a choice made on the regional level. But we are finding that more of those regional carriers like our programming and are making that available. It’s an ongoing part of what we are doing in expanding our HD broadcasts across the country." (link)
Bloomberg's Soshnick & Barr chat with former IMG boss & current Bruin Sports Capital leader Pyne, who covers his current points of focus with Bruin, along with some perspective from his NASCAR experience & industry-wide thoughts. Of note, "I think we've invested, like I said, in deltatre which provides the technology for all screens, you know Courtside, we've made 38 investments in 25 companies that are all digital or technology companies in sports. So we're investing in in the change. We believe media consumption is changing and it's going to create real opportunities for investors. And that's how our investments reflect that thesis along with the investment in live events that become more valuable given things that can aggregate big audiences and are more valuable. So we're investing in the change, and I think investing in the changes is exciting." Lots more in the full interview. (link)
Interesting read from the Wall Street Journal on a segment of the restaurant industry with which virtually every single athletic department in the nation has ties. Sales for casual restaurants are back on the uptick after a few years of struggle. TGI Friday's & Red Lobster are inching up, though Chili's & Applebee's are still trying to figure out the right plan. NRD Capital Management, which owns Ruby Tuesday, Founder & Managing Partner Hashim: "Casual dining is not going anywhere, it just has to be reinvented." Reinvented, so far, means healthier dishes, growing to-go business & faster/more consistent customer experiences. (link)
Also Noticed: Courier-Journal writer Sullivan: "Should University of #Louisville return John Schnatter's donations related to stadium naming rights, or at least a portion thereof. (Contract has 21+ years to run). Presumably, he's already taken tax deductions, so it could get complicated." (link); Kentucky's new Baseball stadium is coming along, drone pics here. (link); For the first time in 80 years, LSU and Tulane will not play in Baseball next season. (link); Facilities arms race. In high school. Yep. Here's the situation in & around Valdosta, GA. (link)
