Outgoing ESPN MBB analyst Goodman with some breaking news of sorts on the future of summer hoops around the nation. "NABC Ad Hoc Committee met earlier this week and all signs point to four regional camps, potentially one in June and one in July, involving somewhere between 2K and 3K kids. These, according to sources, are likely to be paid for by NCAA and be held on rotating college campuses. The top 700 or so players will go to one of the sites on the second weekend, whether that is a weekend in June or July, and the hope is to have them coached by G League coaches and maybe even NBA players." There's hope that prospective student-athletes would be attracted to being coached by professionals & current NBA names. Maybe even more importantly, there's a push to get rid of AAU events altogether by removing their importance to the system. More, "Sources are confident that these changes will be implemented and implemented swiftly. The proposal will be signed off on and as they go through this, they can tinker with it. After year one if something is not working, they are prepared to make changes and understand that this is not the end all be all." Listen at the 13:56 mark. (link)
The NCAA has tabbed Heidrick & Struggles to assist with the search for a new EVP of Regulatory Affairs. There's also a robust search committee, which will see SEC Commish Sankey serve as the external chair & NCAA VP of Inclusion & Human Resources Albert as the internal chair. Also on the team are Arizona State AD Anderson, UCF AD White, Purdue boss Bobinski, Georgetown AD Reed, Baylor's Rhoades, Florida State AD Wilcox, UNLV's Reed-Francois, Commissioners Gumbart (ASUN), Harris (Ivy), Heppel (Patriot) & Thomas (MEAC), NCAA WBB VP Holzman, plus other key leaders. (link)
St. John's AD Goff exits, points to family reasons, "I am thankful for the opportunities afforded to me at the University and will treasure all of the relationships I built with our student-athletes, coaches and administrators during my tenure." The Red Storm will be led in the interim by Assoc. VP/SWA Meehan. The university says a national search will commence immediately with assistance from a search firm. (link)
Nevada Senior Assoc. AD for Intercollegiate Services/Special Asst. to the Prez Barrio went through the car wash in New Britain as he vies for the open AD chair at Central Connecticut State. Barrio noted his roots to the state, "If this was Sacramento State, if this was Cal State Northridge, I’m not interviewing here right now. And those are the kinds of jobs people will call me about. I’m not going to those places. I’m from Connecticut, I’m a Connecticut guy, I call sandwiches grinders, and I wear a [Hartford] Whalers hat to Lake Tahoe. I’ve wanted to come back here for a long time. I don’t want to be here for two years or three years, I want to come here and really do something special. I believe in this school." Barrio also referred to the Wolf Pack's budget being one of the smallest in the Mountain West, yet still having substantial competitive success, "So I know that you can be relatively low resourced and succeed. I think that’s an important thing to know when I’m here."(link); Current CCSU Assoc. AD for External Services Villanti was the third & final candidate to communicate his vision for the Blue Devils. "Tradition is really important here and tradition is going to be really important to me. It’s going to be important that we bring back players and coaches that have played and coached here before to talk to our student athletes. Being a Blue Devil is really special, and being a Blue Devil is all about family and unselfishness." Villanti also pointed to the need for more fundraising to raise recruiting budgets & pay for ACs. (link)
Not too long ago there was talk about Oklahoma State AD Holder retiring in the very near future. Yesterday Holder inked a new three-year extension with a sizable base pay increase from $640K to $950K. OSU Prez Hargis: "Coach Holder’s compensation has been well below market for years. Under his leadership, Oklahoma State is one of the most well-rounded, competitive athletic programs in the country. Mike has led historic improvements in facilities and performance of our athletes and, with this adjustment, his compensation will be more in line with Big 12 athletic directors." (link)'s Keegan puts July 2nd as the over/under on the AD hire at Kansas & July 30 as the new AD's first day on the job. Keegan applauds KU for keeping so quiet during the process, believes former Louisville AD Jurich may be interested & thinks Jurich's settlement at U of L should ease concerns on potential baggage. More on Jurich below. (link)
Michigan State: Sounds like MSU won't have a new Prez until 2019 & whomever the new leader is will have the opportunity to hire their own AD. Further, MSU trustees point to June of next year to have the new Prez in place. (link); Longtime Spartans Executive Assoc. AD/SWA Appelbaum will exit on July 1. No further details available yet. (link); Guess this story involving ESPN's Vitale & notable 2019 prospective MBB student-athlete Carey is a reminder that media can take pictures of prospects, but not with them. Vitale rants on a situation in East Lansing last season. (link)
The Tampa Bay Times' Knight reports former Louisville AD Jurich's name continues to bubble as a leading option for the next boss at USF. Knight: "Several sources have indicated in recent days that the groundswell of support for Jurich, the longtime Louisville athletic director dismissed last fall, is growing. Among those backing Jurich are major boosters and even some current USF coaches, those sources insist." Knight says it's unclear how Jurich's exit at U of L, as well as issues under his watch, may look to Bulls Prez Genshaft. (link); Former Tampa Bay Bucs & Florida State standout Brooks says he's not in the mix to take over the top spot on Fowler Ave. "As flattered as I am to be publicly mentioned for the (AD position), I do not believe the timing is right for me to pursue any new opportunities." Looks like the Bulls are moving quickly as we could have an announcement by July 4. (link)
Interesting read on Washington State boss Chun's path to becoming an AD, including this pretty funny note, "This is 2002, 2003, and I’m already well into my athletic career, and we were talking about having a baby, and my mom pulls me aside and says, 'Hey, if you guys are going to have kids, you really need to start thinking about getting a real job.' At that point, you know you’re not going to win that debate with your mom. It’s like: 'Mom, just trust me. I’m on a great path here.'" More Chun, "When you start getting more involved, then it hits you: 'Wow, no one really looks like you.' You never really quantify these things until you start competing for jobs and you’re trying to get to different levels of your career. It’s like, 'Wow.' It does hit you." (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Michigan AD Manuel: "I am perfectly fine with the student-athletes being able (to transfer with no restrictions on schools). Most time, when they ask for permission, we granted it, 98, 97, whatever percent it was, so I’m fine with that." Manuel basically confirms FB is looking really closely at a trip to South Africa next spring at a cost of around $800K, also likes the new FB redshirt rule & new blue end zones in the Big House. (link)

Auburn AD Greene Q&As on a handful of topics. HC continuity? "As I learn about these coaches, their personalities, their nuances, their visions for their programs, it makes it easier for an administration to support them and their endeavors when you have some continuity. Also it helps when you go through some tough patches with those coaches, it brings you closer together." Standalone FB facility? "I think the importance is not necessarily a football facility per se, but demonstrating that we're committed to being a national powerhouse in football." MBB issues in the past? "I think so. The tough part about the basketball situation - and this isn't just us, this is across the country - there's lots that are beyond our control and that we don't know." A bit more. (link)
Boston College's Jarmond points to the opening of the new indoor FB & training facility as a key highlight of his first year with the Eagles. "On time and on budget. […] We had a couple of things we wanted to add and that’s part of being new. Those things we’ve gone out and fund-raised for and we didn’t go over budget. That was not what we were going to do." FB HC Addazio believes the space will be a key addition to his program's student-athlete development framework, calls the "state of the art weight room" part of the "home run all the way around." (link)
BYU AD Holmoe indicates talks are on-going with ESPN about a new deal between the two parties as the current papers expire after the '19 season. Not worried about last year's 4-9 mark impacts the situation, "ESPN has a longer range view of what BYU football is about." The FB series with Notre Dame, two of six match-ups have been played, is still getting worked on & Holmoe says the outcome will be better than just getting a buyout check. On FB scheduling overall, "When you call up a big Power 5 team, I usually don’t get to lead with the home game. So we try to get the game and the series and in order to that you play on the road first. As we move forward in our schedule, we think it’s important to play the best teams. Sometimes you don’t have those opportunities unless you play them on the road." (link)
This time last year, Georgia Baseball HC Stricklin needed to put up a bunch of Ws, which is exactly what he did during the 2018 season & now he has an extended deal that could keep him in Athens through the 2022 slate. No exact financial terms, but a "modest raise" from Stricklin's $575K is mentioned. Dawgs AD McGarity also points to new terms being worked on for Men's Track & Field HC Kyprianou & Softball HC Harris-Champer. McGarity on his facility project list, "We have a long list of improvements we want to make for the future, and the priority is determined by a number of factors. But the bottom line is we’ll always be looking to do whatever we need to do to improve and enhance all our sports. At the end of the day, we’re going to do what we believe we need to do to be competitive." (link)
Vanderbilt is the only SEC member without Volleyball or Softball & it doesn't look like that's going to change anytime soon. Commodores AD Williams indicates Volleyball would be ahead of Softball in the pecking order if VU was to add any programs, due to not needing to build a new facility. But, overall, "Right now, it's not on our radar." SEC Commish Sankey's perspective, "I think 13's worked well for the league since the last two years all 13 have played in the postseason and this year Vandy won the women's bowling national championship. It may support the wisdom of some flexibility around sports offerings." (link)
More Personnel: Loyola (MD) Asst. AD for Compliance Porter heads to Towson as the Assoc. AD for Compliance. (link); Former Kansas AD Zenger will stick around Lawrence for at least another year as he has accepted a job as linebackers coach for the Free State (HS) FB team for "just one season." (link); D1Baseball's Rogers reports Illinois State will hire Purdue AC Holm as the next Baseball HC in Normal. (link); North Carolina Baseball HC Fox and the Heels have agreed in principle on an extension, no terms released yet. (link); Missouri State Baseball HC Guttin gets two years added onto his deal. Base salary remains at $113K. Gotta be the best ROI for a Baseball HC in the last few years. (link); Southern Utah parts ways with Softball HC Gray. (link); UAB AD Ingram goes with Oregon AC Kolaitis as the next Softball HC for the Blazers. (link); Washington State AD Chun on the clock for a new Swimming and Diving HC. (link); James Madison upped its FB AC salary pool $118K to $971K for the upcoming season. DC Trott up to $165K, OC Kirkpatrick now $155K (link); Appalachian State alum McLean bumped up from AC to T&F HC while fellow alum Curcio will lead the XC program and serve as AHC for T&F.(link)
Maryland Executive AD Evans & FB HC Durkin met with parents of FB student-athletes on Thursday night & reassured them "the program had followed protocols the day Jordan McNair was hospitalized." One mother, "They assured us they are safety first. Everything that could have been done was done." Another: "Players need to open up and speak out about any health problems. They typically don’t speak out because they don’t want to feel 'less than.' They want to be macho men and fulfill dreams, but if your body is telling you something, find out what it’s saying." (link)
New Cal boss Knowlton with his latest "Notes" to the Golden Bears family. Says he's gone through SWOT analysis with 25 different sport programs & units within his first month on the job, which are key to developing a strategic plan & achieve financial stability, as well as Title IX compliance. Points to FB seasons tickets being up 75% year-over-year. Of note, "Based on my interactions with alumni to date, I know there is much discussion about the future size and scope of our department. Chancellor Christ has stated on numerous occasions that 'cutting sports is the last resort.' I firmly agree with her stance. And while we do face challenges ahead, none of them are insurmountable. Everywhere I look I see opportunities, as long as we are proactive and take a disciplined approach combined with a deliberate decision-making process." (link)
Southern Miss AD Gilbert pens part one of a three-part series with a focus on leadership development. Updates the USM community on the Leadership Academy offered to 19 student-athletes for the first time this past year. "The Academy was launched in August 2017 and consisted of monthly meetings that covered topics ranging from Growth Mindset to Servant Leadership. In addition, the Academy included 2 day-long retreats. I had the good fortune to attend those retreats, and they were a learning experience for me as well. In conclusion, please know that the results of the Leadership Academy will pay high dividends for all involved – our Student-Athletes, their sport programs, the Department of Athletics, and our great University. But perhaps most of all, the Leadership Academy will benefit the communities and families where they live and work." (link)
At this week's Idaho State Board of Education meeting Boise State AD Apsey sought approval for expanded pregame alcohol service for FB home games to include a variety of different BSU venues, but the proposal was not seconded and died. Board of Athletics chair Westerberg: "I just do not believe the institution-provided service of alcohol has anything to do with improving their ability to complete their mission." In a separate proposal, Learfield, seeking to have its contract extended three years through 2028, would provide an extra $6.45M over 10 years that the Broncos "'in good faith' will consider multimedia proposals for off-campus beer and wine promotions, as well as partnerships in the gaming/casino categories." That request was not approved, either, and further, the board wants Prez Kustra to sign off on it. The group did, however, approve the requested $500K to create a design for a $8M-$10M baseball stadium and the new Nike deal ($750K up front, $11.4M in apparel and equipment between 2019-20 and 2024-25.) (link)
What's the future of the Longhorn Network? A trio of Awful Announcing journalists take a stab. Andrew Bucholtz believes the network eventually moves to an OTT option nationally with a linear option still within the Longhorn State. Ben Koo: "I’m confident ESPN wants nothing to do with the Longhorn Network after the current deal lapses and would look for an exit or soft landing anytime before the deal expires. [...] My best guess is if Disney does end up acquiring the Fox Sports regional channels, they somehow offload the property to that division and integrate it with the Fox Sports Southwest, which oddly doesn’t have much distribution in Austin." Important fact to remember: The LHN deal runs through 2031. (link)
Also Noticed: Youngstown State and Vivature do a big deal, five years $1M. (link); Dabo has a new website. Built by WME in conjunction with the brains at Clemson. (link); Lots of interesting fashion statements at the NBA Draft this year, highlighted by former Oklahoma star Young's suit shorts. Gotta imagine many of your student-athletes took notes. (link); Idaho State gets the go ahead from the State Board of Education to remove seats inside Holt Arena to install new ones that will be "uniformly colored." $2M-$2.5M estimated cost for the project.
