Local headlining journalist Crawford with the goods, "It is, perhaps, the worst-kept secret in Louisville that Tyra is expected to be voted permanent athletic director by the U of L Athletic Association board of directors and board of trustees Monday morning in a quick series of meetings beginning at 10:15." Tyra was in attendance for WBB's regional title yesterday, "I’m more focused on this today. I don’t want to take anything away from what our women have accomplished and what Jeff (Walz) has done. It’s a great day for U of L." (link); It'll be a busy morning over on the Belknap Campus with a 8:30a AD search committee meeting, followed by a 10a UofL Athletic Association personnel committee chat, then the 10:15a full ULAA board & finally a 10:35a with the university's Board of Trustees. (link)
Syracuse AD Wildhack Q&As with the Daily Orange, "Our biggest upside is football. It’s incumbent on me and my staff to give Babers the time he needs to turn the football program around. We want to compete at the highest level. Are we putting enough resources behind them so they can compete at an ACC championship level? That’s what we’re here to do." Reiterates his push back on the NBA's one-and-done rule, "I don’t think one-and-done works for anybody. If somebody is good enough to turn pro out of high school, and that’s what they want to do, whether it’s the NBA or G-League or international, they should be able to do that. Some type of baseball policy would be good. Same thing with agents. We need to remodify the existing policy there and the summer recruiting season. The FBI investigation should be a catalyst for change." Wildhack also mentions needing to work on SU's holistic facilities plan, looking forward to getting even more Newhouse students involved in athletics via the coming ACC Network linear launch. (link)
AthleticDirectorU & Parker Executive Search VP & Managing Director Parker conducted mock AD interviews with new Saint Joseph's AD Bodensteiner & Morehead State boss Hutchinson. Ironically, Bodensteiner's chat was just a few months before she was named as the new AD for the Hawks. Parker asked identical questions to the pair as he does with dozens, if not hundreds, of AD interviews he has every year. Of note from Bodensteiner, "What’s our story and are we telling it? Look at all the phenomenal stories our athletes have, are we doing everything we can to tell their stories? […] We all want to work with people we know and trust, but a big part of the problem is our circles are too small and we all tend to go toward people who look like us. If we want to be truly proactive about diversity, it’s imperative to build relationships outside of the people we’re most comfortable being around." From Hutchinson: "Big personalities don’t always equal big success in terms of hiring coaches. [...] In terms of the athletic budget, It’s really critical to educate the institution on what it takes to sustain success." Lots more. (link)
Inside the Kennel's Bell argues the Mountain West isn't the best possible landing spot for Gonzaga, but it's the right move at the present time in order to exit the WCC. "If you eliminate the Pac-12 option (as it is ludicrous) and the Big East (as it isn't currently feasible), the MWC is absolutely the best option from a basketball perspective. Keep in mind I am saying from a basketball perspective." Looking at a five year retrospective, "the average Mountain West program is ranked ~15% higher (via KenPom) than the average WCC program (excluding Gonzaga)." Bell also notes that 2018-19 is the final year of the WCC's current TV deal & expresses some angst on the value of a new pact. More, though it's surprising loquacious Gonzaga AD Roth is not quoted here. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
How will long haul flights impact sports & college athletics? Major airline manufacturers are pushing for planes that can connect any two spots on the globe without stopping to refuel or to make a connection. Yesterday, Qantas completed the first Perth to London direct route, coming in at a brisk 17 hours in the air. Qantas brass are already pushing for an even more ambitious direct: Sydney or Melbourne to New York City. (link)

NCAA Prez Emmert was in attendance at Saturday night's MBB Tourney South Region final won by Loyola-Chicago & provided more thoughts on the current hoops landscape. "The NCAA is a representative association – the rules are made by the member schools themselves – so it’s a democratic process. In order to get enough catalytic effect to get people to change in a speedy time, sometimes it takes a dramatic event, and unfortunately that’s what we’ve got on our hands – a very dramatic, very  unpleasant event. So now we go out and we fix it." Emmert says the Rice Commission is "working away like crazy" ahead of an April 25th announcement date for proposed changes. Emmert also asks of the current enforcement framework, "Are they strong enough and robust enough to get at these kind of problems?" (link)
The Chicago Tribune's Haugh believes Loyola-Chicago MBB HC Moser is due some major cash & commitments from the institution. Ramblers AD Watson after Moser's squad cut down the nets in Atlanta, "Porter is the CEO of men’s basketball and we just need to support him in any way we can and make sure he has the opportunity to be successful. He’s a great coach, he’s unbelievably passionate, he recruits the right kind of guys." Moser is currently getting $420K annually through 2021-22. More Watson: "We’ve been talking about it for a few weeks now. I laugh because every time he wins, it seems his popularity continues to go up. We’re very, very fortunate to have a supportive president and chair of the board of trustees (Robert Parkinson Jr.) who was here (Saturday). They understand what we’re going to have to do. We’ve got a little work to do, but I’m confident." (link)
ACC Senior Assoc. Commish for MBB Brazeau tried to make every game in the MBB Tourney that included a league squad & he came awfully close. To complicate matters, Brazeau fell during the ACC Tourney in Brooklyn, fracturing an elbow & tearing a rotator cuff. However, Brazeau is used to some challenging moments as he's the guy who is on the receiving end of questions & complaints from ADs & HCs throughout the season when push back on officiating occurs. Duke AD White is a big fan. Last night's Duke-Kansas barnburner was the ninth Brazeau had seen in the tourney. More. (link)
More Personnel: Utah State's hiring of South Dakota MBB HC Smith still "imminent" per sources but no official word yet. Smith visited campus yesterday. (link); The Daily Press' Teel writes on Virginia's WBB HC search under new AD Williams, believes she's plenty prepared, also a "fascinating initial test." (link); Looks like High Point brass are bringing high-profile former MBB HC Smith back home to his alma mater. (link); Former energy executive Gallogly expected to be named Oklahoma's new Prez today. (link); Final Four hoops HC bonuses: $150K for Kansas boss Self, $10K for Louisville WBB's Walz, $25K for Michigan MBB's Beilein. (link); New Memphis MBB HC Hardaway's contract is worth $1.5M annually for three years. Former boss Smith was due to make $3.25 next season. (link); Who might one day succeed Nike boss Parker? COO Sprunk, Prez of Consumer & Marketplace Hill & leader of all categories, design product & merchandising Spillane all reviewed as possibilities. (link)
$500M+. That's what the Wall Street Journal's Korn & Davis O'Brien believe Michigan State could be on the hook for in connection to the Nassar saga. Victim settlements alone could account for $300M. Interim MSU Prez Engler has mentioned the possibility of raising tuition, hopes the university doesn't go bankrupt & hopes all the settlements can be "wrapped up before the semester's over." Lots of comparisons to the Penn State-Sandusky situation in the article, though there's also comments on the difficulty of translating results in one jurisdiction to another. (link)
Loyola-Chicago's Sister Jean has given her blessing to the school to use her name and image with all licensing royalties will go to the Loyola Athletic Fund. So far more than 25 Sister Jean T-shirts have been approved, including Fanatics version of a Final Four shirt with her phrase "Worship. Work. and Win." Senior Assoc. AD for External Operations Sorboro: "To have Fanatics involved here and for us to be on the front page of the world's biggest sports website is unparalleled." Loyola sold more gear on Fanatics over the weekend than in the entire season combined. An update on the Sister Jean bobbleheads: more than 5K preorders have been placed, breaking the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum's previous bobblehead sales record. (link, link, link)
Auburn continues with its "Auburn Builds Champions" series, this time featuring Director of Sports Medicine Petrone, who points to having a servant's heart as a key part of his staff's success. Petrone: "Our motto as a staff is -- we take care of kids, but the thing is I don't want to ever tell anybody no. I don't want to hear, 'It's not my job.' I hate that. If you're at an event and something needs to be done and you're not busy, what's the big deal? Even if it's not your lane or your title, you do it. And people see that. They just want to know that somebody is going to have their back. I don't want to use the word leader. I think if everybody's on the same page, we are the leader." More on the family nature of the staff and how the 2015 opening of the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine was a game-changer for Petrone and his group. Links to the five previous features in the ongoing eight-part series are also included. (link)
Bowling Green FB student-athlete Suder thought he had one more season of eligibility as the team's kicker, but learned in February that there had been a mixup and his collegiate playing days were over. Suder: "The compliance people at BG told me the appeal was like trying an 80-yard field goal. You can attempt it, but will it go in? Probably not." Suder started his career in 2013 at a DII school, transferred to a community college in 2014, joined BG in 2015 but didn't play until 2016, the same time the Falcons had a coaching change. Unbeknownst to him, the 2014 season was counted as his redshirt year, but he thought the 2015 one was. Suder doesn't blame anyone for what happened. (link)
The California Supreme Court has ruled that public colleges and universities have a duty to protect students from potential violence in "school-sponsored activities."Judge Corrigan: "The college-student relationship thus fits within the paradigm of a special relationship. Students are comparatively vulnerable and dependent on their colleges for a safe environment. Colleges have a superior ability to provide that safety with respect to activities they sponsor or facilities they control." The ruling overturns a lower court decision and allows former UCLA student Rosen to proceed with her lawsuit against the school, stemming from when she was attacked in a chemistry class by a fellow student who was known by UCLA's Counseling and Psychological Services to have severe depression and possibly schizophrenia. The lawsuit alleges the school's knowledge of these conditions and that it should have warned and guarded Rosen and other students. (link)
Also Noticed: Updated units earned by conference during the NCAA MBB Tourney: ACC (21), Big 12 (19), SEC (16), Big East (13), Big Ten (12), American (5), Atlantic 10 (5), MVC (5), Mountain West (4), Pac-12 (3), WCC (3) and with two each are the America East, Big South, C-USA, MAC and SWAC. 16 conferences have earned a single credit. (link); Former Arizona Track & Field AC Carter will go to trial this week, nearly three years after he was arrested on domestic violence charges involving former student-athlete Gibson. Jury selection begins Tuesday in Pima County Superior Court. (link); CLEAR, already used at 24 U.S. airports, Yankee Stadium and Coors Field to speed passage through security, will open express entrances at the Atlanta Braves, Oakland A's and Seattle Mariners stadiums. With the move, CLEAR is now in nine of the 30 big league parks. (link); Facebook founder Zuckerberg took out a full-page ad in several British and American newspapers yesterday to apologize for a "breach of trust" in the Cambridge Analytica scandal. The ad, in part: "You may have heard about a quiz app built by a university researcher that leaked Facebook data of millions of people in 2014. This was a breach of trust, and I'm sorry we didn't do more at the time. We're now taking steps to ensure this doesn't happen again. ... I promise to do better for you." (link)
"Why You Need an Untouchable Day Every Week" comes from best-selling author Pasricha for Harvard Business Review. Thesis: "As our world gets busier and our phones get beepier, the scarcest resource for all of us is becoming attention and creative output. And if you’re not taking time to put something new and beautiful out into the world, then your value is diminishing fast." Solution? "So what do Untouchable Days look like up close? I think of them as having two components. There is the deep creative work. When you’re in the zone, you’re in a state of flow, and the big project you’re working on is getting accomplished step by step by step. And then there are the nitros — little blasts of fuel you can use to prime your own pump if you hit a wall. These unproductive moments of frustration happen to all of us, and it’s less important to avoid them than to simply have a mental toolkit you can whip out when they happen. […] I have a simple rule. Untouchable Days may never be deleted, but they can move between the bowling-lane bumpers of the weekends. They can’t jump weeks, though." More. (link)
