(Listen) From The Chair Hosted By Mike Hamilton: UNLV’s Desiree Reed-Francois
Luck Exits: "I’ll tell you what I told Mark Emmert. I called him last week and said, 'Mark, this is a great opportunity.' I really wanted to take advantage of it. There’s no reflection on any discontent I may have with college athletics. I’m a huge college fan, in the sense of what college athletics does for almost 500,000 student-athletes. The enterprise of college athletics is healthy, quite honestly. There’s challenges, to be sure, whether that’s courts or the Rice Commission. Certainly lots of work to do, but by and large, it’s a healthy enterprise, and this move is all about the XFL and in no way reflects any negative feelings I may have about the NCAA. Mark Emmert and the staff there, people I worked with, are really doing great work." On his time in Indy, "We’re not without fault at the NCAA, but it’s a very healthy enterprise. I oversaw regulatory, and I can walk away satisfied with the different approach we’ve begun to take. Amidst all the conflicting constituencies that exist in college athletics on the regulatory side, we’ve got to focus on the student-athlete." More as The Athletic's Vannini gets a Q&A with Luck. (link); Luck to Yahoo's Forde, "Things move slowly at the NCAA. It is a big institutional tanker that is hard to turn around. But at the end of the day, college athletics is healthy and it will change in ways it needs to. That’s happening — out of all the competing interests, the first and foremost interest is now the student-athlete. American parents, cutting across all demographic lines, still think getting a scholarship is one of the great things in the world for their sons and daughters." (link)
Florida AD Stricklin adds to his executive leadership team in a strong way with the hire of former Auburn AD Jacobs as the new Executive Assoc. AD in Gainesville. The quintessential 'Auburn Man' has roots in the Sunshine State having gone to high school in Jacksonville. Jacobs: "Some people are fortunate to say they are coming home once in their careers, now I am lucky enough to say it twice." Stricklin: "His character, vision, experience and ability to connect with people will be tremendous assets to our department. Additionally, having served in a leadership role in the SEC, Jay understands the great privilege and responsibility we have as a member of this wonderful conference." (link); Another notable high-level move is Austin Peay VP for Advancement, Communications & Strategic Initiatives van der Merwe, who also previously served as the Govs AD, heading to Arizona as COO. Wildcats AD Heeke & van der Merwe worked together at Central Michigan & the new COO will help with the day-to-day running of the department. Also of note in Tucson is the ascension of former Senior Assoc. AD for Major Gifts Barnes to Executive Assoc. AD with additional oversight of Academic & Life Skills, in addition to Development. (link)
Jackson State Prez Bynum introduces new Tigers AD Robinson, who slides over from Prairie View A&M. Bynum: "When he expressed interest in the job, I just told him thank you. You just made my job a lot easier, because you're going straight to the top of the list. [...] He has been a fast-riser everywhere he has been. We're hoping he can help Jackson State do the same thing." Robinson: "We had a good thing going at Prairie View. But coming home and being a part of Jackson State and a bigger tradition (of a school) that really believes in the importance of athletics." (link)
Hello, welcome to town, you're the new Interim AD. Austin Peay hires Louisiana Monroe Asst. AD for Compliance Varytimidis as Assoc. AD/SWA & when she arrives in Clarksville on July 2nd, she'll also serve as Interim AD. Outgoing APSU AD Ivey: "Lisa brings a tremendous amount of experience and will be a substantial asset to the athletics department and the Austin Peay community. She has strong desire to build quality and substantial relationships with those in and around athletics, and true servant’s heart." Collegiate Sports Associates is aiding the university with its AD search. (link)
Mountain West brass wrapped their latest leadership meetings from Sonoma where they discussed the league's media rights deals, which "enters the final two years of its current broadcast rights structure," continued improvements to non-conference MBB scheduling & approved another year of eSports experimentation. The conference is also pushing the NCAA "to permanently rescind the ban on championship competition in states with legalized sports gaming." New executive committee: Utah State Prez Cockett as chair, joined by San Jose State boss Papazian & Fresno State Prez Castro. (link)
AAC Commish Aresco: "We’re trying to identify where the competition would be and what’s our value with the assets we bring and what we could do to enhance our value. […] We’ve had a great year and it’s probably the best time we ever could have picked in terms of the value of our conference being at its highest since we reconstituted ourselves five years ago. I think we’ve got a great product and when you’ve got a great product you're confident ultimately you can figure out the right kind of TV and media." On sports gambling: "I’m hoping that states don’t permit gambling on college games, especially on teams from their own state. I don’t know where it’s going to go. I do think you’re going to have to have more people involved in compliance, more people checking to make sure everything is above board and nothing’s happening." More. (link)
NC State AD Yow says she's not shy about bringing up controversial officiating calls to the league office, "even if we can't talk about it publicly." Yow also notes how much social & digital media has impacted the job of being an AD, indicates she's reading the news online the night before & then looking for placement in the hard copy of the newspaper the next morning. Indicates she prefers visuals over narrative via digital channels, just like may people today. "Twitter is my favorite and my staff watches me very closely." On ACC revenue, " The ACC Network is critical. We do have the lowest per-school payouts in the Power 5. We've maxed out currently...we are really looking to the ACC Network to generate significant new dollars that we can reinvest. [...] We really have fourth-quartile revenue and first-quartile results. That's hard to do and we have to get more in line with more revenue to keep coaches and when we have a chance to be able to compete against the SEC and Big Ten where there's opportunities." More via a Pack Pride podcast. (link)
Colorado State's on-campus jewel of a FB stadium gets a naming rights partner in Canvas Credit Union, which was previously Public Service Credit Union. So, 'Canvas Stadium' it is. Deal: $37.7M over 15 years. Canvas has been in Colorado for 80 years & has 28 branches across the state. Learfield brokered. (link); Though it may always affectionately be the Gator Bowl, the former EverBank Field in Jacksonville is officially now 'TIAA Bank Field.' (link)
Florida State HC Alameda after her Noles won a National Championship last night, "All these girls to the right, the girls on the bus heading home right now, they're the ones that made that happen. And our lesson from last year from Team 34 was to have a little more fun. Last year's team was amazing. We did everything right, but we forgot to celebrate the little things. […] we've made sure the coaching staff can sit down and we can talk about how to make the challenges and make sure our team responds from the challenges. So early on this season Travis put together a schedule that really challenged us, and we had a young group and a sense of leadership. We made some huge adjustments all season long. I just -- I honestly -- everyone kind of asked like what is the secret ingredient? I don't know. We got better every single game, even here. We got better every single game. Again, that goes to the team. So what we give them, but it's our program, their team, and they just ran with it." More. (link); As a result of the Natty, FSU AD Wilcox adds a $10K bonus to his bottom line. (link)

The 21st Century Fox deal for Sky in the UK cleared regulatory hurdles as long as Sky News is jettisoned to a third party. Now comes the bidding war between Fox & Comcast. Bigger picture for those of us in the States: Disney's acquisition of Fox, its 39% stake in Sky & Sky News overall. (link); Headlining German soccer club Bayern Munich has an astounding 60 staffers dedicated to content production & delivery. Good read here from Digiday on how the club thinks about leveraging its digital rights. (link)

With the Philadelphia Eagles getting disinvited to the White House, Villanova AD Jackson remarks, "We haven’t been asked to go. So we haven’t really given it a whole lot of thought until the last 24 hours, when all of this news broke with the Eagles." Jackson is noncommittal on how such an invitation would be received by his MBB title-winners, adds, "Whenever we go, we’d prefer to be able to go as a full team, when we’re all together. It’s difficult to imagine a scenario where that works. Right now six of 13 guys will be all over the country. I’m not sure how we could get everyone together." Wildcats HC Wright says it's something his team should do out of respect, but not without significant internal dialogue. (link)
The Athletic's Vannini pens on trend lines around Interim HCs ascending to the permanent role in college football. "Since 2015, six of 20 interim head coaches who have coached at least two games landed the full-time job. […] From 2008 to 2014, there were 20 interim coaches to coach at least two games, and only one got the job: Dabo Swinney at Clemson in 2008." USC HC Helton points directly to Swinney as the main reason. Here's Vannini's thesis, "Partly because of the addition of a winter recruiting dead period in 2013 and an early signing period this year, colleges are firing coaches earlier in the regular season, giving interim coaches more time to make an impact." More. (link)
The Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner on the Pac-12's decision to bar 5-7 FB squads from bowl games, points to the reality of losing money on a bowl game for such a program, the likelihood of an HC search going at the same time, but "why centralize the policy? Why not let the schools choose their fate if the situation ever arises?" More: "My understanding, per a source with knowledge of the discussions, is that there was strong agreement on the matter at the campus level. Then again, the source also noted that the postseason fate of 5-7 teams is far, far, far down the list of pressing football issues the conference must address." (link)
The infamous Lloyd Lake finally talks, though many would have liked to have heard Lake on the stand during the recently-completed McNair trail. Lake: "At the end, it could’ve all been avoided so easily. I couldn’t believe how much damage was done to so many different people behind this. I hated to hear what Todd McNair was going through after this. That was never my intention. I hate that he got involved. […] I still wanted to see Todd McNair win because they might’ve been a little too severe on him. But I’m glad I stayed out of [the trial]. If I would’ve been in there, he wouldn’t have won his case because I know what happened and he knows what happened." (link)
Yahoo's Eisenberg profiles Maine MBB AC Curry, the only full-time female AC on the Men's side. New Black Bears HC Barron, who was quite successful previously as WBB HC in Orono, "I hired Eddie because she’s a perfect fit for our program. She picks up on the things I’m trying to do really quickly, she does a great job of skill instruction and she has a knack for connecting with kids. Recently, she had a lot of experience working with guys as part of the NBA development program for coaches. That contributed to my comfort level with the decision. [...] Some people have an assumption on a subconscious level that men can coach either gender and that women somehow aren’t as prepared. That was blown out of the water for me when I started coaching women’s basketball. Maybe I once had those same sorts of biases, but I’m grateful that I’ve been exposed to what I needed to be in order to understand that someone like Eddie would be a good choice." Lots more. (link)

(link); Kent State AD Nielsen adds Cincinnati Asst. AD for Leadership Gifts Locklier as the Golden Flashes Assoc. AD/Exec. Dir. of Athletics Development. (link); Former Michigan AD Martin, who was responsible for hiring Wolverines MBB HC Beilein, has "no doubt in his mind" that current AD Warde will do what is necessary to retain Beilein as far as compensation is concerned. (link); Boston University AD Marrochello promotes AC O'Connell as the next Men's Hockey HC for the Terriers. (link); Texas Southern MBB HC Davis accepts the same role at Detroit Mercy. (link); Appalachian State MBB HC Fox gets a two-year extension, taking him through the 2020-21 season. (link); Auburn AD Greene extends WBB HC Williams-Flournoy through 2022-23. (link); Tennessee finalizes a $1.33M settlement with former Chancellor Davenport, formally ending her employment at the school. Had she stayed on for her faculty appointment, she would have received $2M in salary and benefits over the first four years and an annual salary of $164K in year five. (link); Georgia Provost Whitten is the sole finalist for Kennesaw State's open presidency. The hire is pending board approval. (link); Gardner-Webb has begun the search process for its next president, as current Prez Bonner will retire next year. Coleman Lew and Associates, Inc. is assisting with the search. (link
SMU AD Hart reflects a bit on 2017-18 & looks forward to the next competition seasons, says there's developing plans on a potential upgrade to Westcott Field. "We don't know what yet. That's another thing we're working through. With the IPC landing where it is, that kind of took the whole soccer-track thing out of play in terms of that three-pronged plan. So now we're going back and figuring out, what do we do with soccer? We've done a lot of things with locker rooms. We're going to continue to look across all of our sports now to say, we've done men's basketball, we've done women's basketball, we've done football, we're doing equestrian. I know everybody focuses on the big projections, which is important, of course, but there's an effort on our part to identify individuals to make sure student-athletes across all our sports feel cared for and have access to quality facilities." (link)
The Tampa Bay Times' Knight offers five candidates to replace USF AD Harlan. Pro FB Hall of Famer and former Buccaneers stud Brooks, Bulls' Executive Deputy AD Clements, Bulls' Softball HC Eriksen, USF alum and Tampa Bay Sports Commission Executive Director Higgins and former Louisville AD Jurich. Knight says fundraising is the key to any hire. (link)
The Salt Lake Tribune's Kamrani points to some comments by new Utah AD Harlan on how he approached non-conference scheduling during his tenure at USF, "I can’t wait to talk to the coaches about this because I think it’s really, really important to strike that balance in making sure you’re scheduling to make sure you get in the best possible postseason place that you can be." Harlan also called non-conference MBB strategy "algebraic." On the future of the BYU rivalry, "Rivalries separate college athletics from really anything else. I think there’s something really special about that, but it’s got to work for both schools. I’m going to talk to Tom about that." (link)
The debate around legalized sports gambling continues & Sports Illustrated's Dellenger takes a hard look at opinions around the SEC. Mississippi State AD Cohen can see a day where large posters adorn locker rooms reminding student-athletes about the importance of game integrity, no different than what Cohen encountered in minor league locker rooms. Ole Miss boss Bjork: "We’re an hour and 10 minutes from Tunica. There are casinos in the central part of the state and on the coast. Now you have to talk with your student-athletes about physically not going into these places, into a sports book." LSU long snapper Ferguson, who is a part of the league's student advisory council, "When you have student athletes playing at the highest level who are not professional ball players, there’s a huge vulnerability for those athletes to be bribed or whatever the case may be, fixing games." (link)
More Facility Updates: Louisiana will undergo a feasibility study on Cajun Field by Plano-based CSL to "assess the appetite of our community, of this region, on premium seating, and what that could look like with Cajun Field." Bottom line, per AD Maggard, is that there will be a renovation, not a rebuild as some media outlets have incorrectly reported. (link); Arizona State AD Anderson on the removal last season of the wall that blocked off upper rows of Wells Fargo Arena: "You didn’t take that thing down with the expectation that you’d have to suffer the embarrassment of putting it back up. ... The wall’s gone. It’s in storage somewhere. They can either give it away or burn it, I don’t really care because it’s not going back up while I’m here." (link); Could an indoor FB practice facility be next on the list for Rutgers? AD Hobbs says as much: "We need a field house." Potential cost is upwards of $50M. (link)
Under Armour releases its first-ever UA Pride collection alongside its internal UA Unified Culture Club & the external group, Athlete Ally. Lots of pics of the swag in the collection via the link. "All proceeds from the UA Pride collection will go towards supporting Athlete Ally, and their development of curriculum designed to foster an inclusive and enriching environment for all athletes. In partnership with the organization, Under Armour will also be highlighting on social media LGBTQ athletes who have been trailblazers in sports, throughout the month of June." (link)

This is interesting: Why New Leaders Should Be Wary of Quick Wins. Former CEO & top-selling author Ciampa for Harvard Business Review, "...rushing toward early wins, even in areas that seem uncontroversial, can be unexpectedly hazardous. That’s because when a new leader takes hold, changes aren’t just about efficiency or revenue; they are also about people’s feelings of vulnerability and uncertainty about what the changes will mean for them." Ciampa continues with how new leaders should slow down in high-speed jobs: Control the flow, reflect, repeat, question & use silence. On that last point, "A pause before responding has a double benefit. It offers the leader a chance to weigh alternatives and decide the best way to respond, and it pushes others to wonder what’s going through the leader’s mind, which may cause them to think more creatively."
