Overall, Vanderbilt's Corbin leads the group at 2.317M with six others above $1M. Kentucky's Mingione with the largest potential bonus haul at $477K (four others with $400K+ possible) & interestingly only seven HCs make more than the highest paid FB AC at their institution. Highest current buyout is South Carolina's Kingston at $2M, highest payout is Louisville's McDonnell at $8.45M. Tennessee State AD Phillips recounts her "accidental" journey to becoming an AD, from an offhanded comment to an athletic department official and eventually to her current position overseeing TSU athletics. "I don't really know how it all happened, but it all just fit in, and I would've never predicted it. I was a student-athlete and I was a coach." Phillips says her biggest mental hurdle was not being a "coach's AD," noting that you still have to lay out and execute a vision, still have to offer guidance, and "sometimes you have to put your foot down." While there's no doubt Phillips wants to compete and win on the field, it's the student-athletes who have kept her going doing her tenure. "They keep you young. ... It keeps me interested in getting up every day." Asked about what she hopes her legacy would be, Phillips responds: "That it wasn't about [me]. That it was about the students. ... There's no other reason for us to work on a college campus if it's not about your students." More from Phillips. (link)
Florida State hopes to have a decision on a FB-only facility ready to announce "by the beginning of the fall," according to AD Wilcox, who says a consulting firm is looking at revamping the Moore Athletic Center as well as a standalone facility. Revamping the Moore Center would require the displacement of not just the FB team during renovations, but also the College of Communication and other athletic programs that utilize the facility, while a standalone facility would require the relocation of just the FB team. A West Virginia official has denied a USA Today report on its revenue and earnings, saying there's "no way in hell we made $21M" and there's "no way the revenue was $110M." The discrepancy, according to 247 Sports, is attributable to the accounting, as the report used NCAA accounting while WVU used federal accounting, which "makes distinctions for money it does not consider revenue." Asst. AD for Business Ops Morrone: "The $110 million in revenue counts the money that came into the WVU Foundation. That may be people supporting financial aid. That may be a gift. They can be paying on a pledge -- you may have pledged 10 years ago to help pay for the basketball practice facility over time, and you made a payment this year. We raise money over time with these pledges, and the pledges come in and we have to pay off debt services because we have to build the building. It's a capital and debt thing, which really throws us off. The government report is a truer representation of revenue and operations than the NCAA report." WVU's accounting shows $90.5M revenue, a difference of nearly $20M, so the actual surplus, according to WVU, totals $2.74M. (link)

UNLV's move to a 'Power 5' conference is "inevitable" according to former Prez Jessup, who cites the "mood" of those conferences to expand as one of the only variables. "And that’s probably not until they’re getting closer to the renegotiations of their television contracts, and for those two conferences [Big 12 and Pac-12] that’s still a few years away. And that’s fine. I think UNLV needs that time to continue to evolve. I’m still pretty bullish on that. I think it’s inevitable that it’s going to happen if UNLV stays on the path that it’s on." Meanwhile, Jessup acknowledges that UNLV will have to improve its position financially, athletically and academically to become a serious P5 candidate, citing the school's current Research Tier 2 designation in the Carnegie Classification of Institutes of Higher Learning. However, he maintains that the university is on the right path. "With grant funding getting up now into the $70M range, most of those institutions are kind of $100M-plus, so we’re making steady progress toward that. As the medical school continues to grow and advance, it will begin bringing in more and more grant funding on its own, just as an example, and that will tip the grant funding scale over in favor of Carnegie R1 and that’s not that far away." USA Today's Berkowitz continues his research of AD bonuses connected to the final Learfield Directors' Cup standings. Alabama's Byrne gets $110K & overall DI ADs earned $450K+ for their program finishes. (link); Nebraska finished 44th in the Learfield Directors' Cup, the worst result in Huskers history. Prez Bounds: "We want to make certain every one of our programs is the kind of program — both from a graduation rate perspective and how our student-athletes represent the university perspective, but also the thing that gets people excited is being competitive. And you can be competitive and not win every game." AD Moos' contract incentivizes success in the annual poll: $100,000 if Nebraska finishes 30th or better in the standings, $112,500 for 25th, $125,000 for 20th or $137,500 for 15th or better. (link)
Despite what may have appeared to some as just a moderate improvement in MBB last season, Indiana AD Glass maintains that HC Miller "has already had a dramatic impact on the program," citing fewer turnovers and more conference victories despite losing three student-athletes to the pros. Additionally, IU hauled in a top-seven recruiting class nationally and the highest ranked class in the B1G for the upcoming season; however, Glass stops short of quantifying what success will look like for next season, saying: "I think that it is a little bit of a cop-out for administrators to set litmus tests or define success in advance. But having said all of that, I’m optimistic that we will move toward the goals that I have for men’s basketball." Glass did elaborate on what his goals for the program are, and they include competing for a conference championship. "I hope we are in the NCAA Tournament. I think that year two will be a big move for us." (link)
As has been reported previously, South Alabama is seeking $15M ($10M from the city and $5M from the county) to support the construction of an on-campus FB stadium. Roughly 250 supporters attended a city council this week to voice their support for the funding, and while no vote was held regarding the funds, that could happen as soon as July 10. Should the city provide the $10M USA is seeking, USA would provide $2.5M for the city to convert the 70-year-old Ladd-Peebles Stadium into a venue to host high school FB. Mobile Mayor Stimpson has called that proposal "the best proposition we're probably going to see yet." Ladd-Peebles Board Chair Davis has also weighed in, submitting: "I have no problem (with South Alabama having its) own football stadium, but I do question if this is in the best interest of Mobile to financially support it." Michigan State announced a timeline that would put a new permanent president in place by June 2019. The search will be led by trustees Byrum and Foster and assisted by MSU alumna and retiring Virginia Prez Sullivan, who this week said: "Finding the right president for Michigan State and completing the search in accord with this newly established timeline are critical steps for MSU and its future. I look forward to working with the Board of Trustees and stakeholders in the Spartan community as they seek to attract a great leader for the next chapter in the life of Michigan State University." Byrum added: "We must find broad agreement and have a common understanding of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and challenges facing our community." (link); MSU constituents ranging from lawmakers to students have called for transparency to be a keystone of the search; however, Sullivan has cautioned that publicly naming candidates would limit the pool of candidates. "Almost surely, the candidates will have jobs elsewhere. Some boards are known to fire people who are candidates in a search at another institution." As to who will ultimately take over at MSU, Sullivan observed: "Candidly, (the president's job) will require someone willing to to take on challenges and willing to take on some degree of risk. It will need to be someone who is a creative problem-solver." (link)
You'll likely want to give this a read from Inside Higher Ed, "Study: LGBTQ Teens Feel Repressed in Athletics." 12K teenagers ages 13 to 17 were surveyed by the LGBTQ lobbying group, Human Rights Campaign via researchers at UConn. Notable findings: "...about 80 percent of LGBTQ teenagers and 82 percent of those who are transgender were not out to their coaches," only 24% of LGBTQ teens play a sport versus 68% of the non-LGBTQ sample, 41% of transgender boys, 34% of transgender girls & 31% who identify themselves as nonbinary say they've never felt safe in a locker room. The Big Sky has adopted a rule that would ban student-athletes with convictions for violent crimes from participating in sports or receiving athletic scholarships. The new policy goes into effect for the 2019-20 school year and will apply to all student-athletes signing NLIs beginning next December. Southern Utah Prez Wyatt: "Helping our students live respectful lives in all their social relationships has been a frequent topic of discussion among the presidents of the Big Sky universities. With this new policy, we are setting a standard and sending a message: Behavior we have defined as ‘serious misconduct’ is entirely unacceptable. We will hold ourselves and our students accountable." Former Baylor Volleyball HC Barnes penned a letter on behalf of former FB HC Briles in the summer of 2017, outlining how he handled one particular sexual assault allegation. The letter, in part: "At no time did Coach Briles try to cover this up in any way. We both did what we were told to do in this situation and that was report it to the Athletic Director. ... Because there is so much wrong information out there and Coach Briles has been accused of a cover-up, my player has fully endorsed me to make a statement. In fact she said Art Briles was a good and faithful man. She appreciated his support and she was very thankful that he kept her name out of this as well." Barnes also points to a lack of training and says there was "no Title IX office" established at BU. (link); An op-ed in the Waco Tribune-Herald over the weekend closes with this: "The blistering deposition from McCaw, now Liberty University’s athletics director, further opens a Pandora’s box of skepticism, enabled by Baylor’s refusal to be transparent in the first place with alumni, faculty and donors. Under the circumstances, Baylor’s claim now that plaintiffs’ legal motion cites McCaw testimony out of context must ring hollow. With credibility of regents and Pepper Hamilton on the line, the only sure path to truth is through sworn testimony in the legal arena. Only then will we learn what happened to ensure Baylor’s house is clean and individuals who just don’t get it about sexual assault are out and gone." (link)

On this podcast with Recode's Swisher, Psychologist and Management expert Grant implores companies to stop hiring for "cultural fit," arguing that a company's culture is not unique. "When leaders think they are uniquely talented at forging company culture, that belief 'closes the door to learning.' ... You end up attracting the same kinds of people because culture fit is a proxy for ‘Are you similar to me? Do i want to hang out with you? So you end up with this nice, homogeneous group of people who fall into groupthink and then it’s easier for them to get disrupted from the outside, and they have trouble innovating and changing." Further, Grant suggests avoiding the managerial statement: "Don't bring me problems, bring me solutions" because "if you create a culture where people can only speak up when they have a solution, you will never hear about the biggest problems, which are too hard for one person to solve."
