#10: Looks like Southern Miss Prez Bennett is going to wait three to six months - or longer - before naming a new AD for the Golden Eagles. The timeline would indicate Interim AD Mitchell has a nice runway to prove he deserves the post on a permanent basis. Mitchell points to a tag team approach with Interim Deputy AD Morrison that he believes will be fruitful. Notable: "So much of the staff has gone through so much transition. I want to provide some stability for them and communicate with them and make them understand that it’s not a scary situation we’re in." Mitchell & Morrison will also have to hire a new external boss as Senior Assoc. AD Pugh's last day was Friday. (link)
#9: Minnesota's single-game ticket pricing has been "sent to the stratosphere by being prorated at a similar price to the fee-attached season tickets" and attendance is suffering. Of the nine conference home games left on the MBB schedule, five have prices between $55-90. The Men's Hockey game against Wisconsin runs $50-70. More on the way prices reached this point, including the "scholarship seating" fees instituted by former AD Teague. (link)
#8: Open records give us a peek inside the emails between UCF AD White & Florida peer Stricklin as the two do the tango on a potential FB series. Stricklin: "UF isn’t in the market for home-and-home or a neutral site games against non-Autonomy 5 opponents. […] We are in need of a home opener for the 2022 season, so the 9/3/2022 date you mention would be a perfect date to begin the series, and we can fill in the remaining games from there." White: "I think that our team has shown on the field that we are far from a typical ‘non-autonomy 5’ opponent. [...] Requiring non-autonomy 5 schools to have to settle for inequitable scheduling seems like an unfair business practice and something we should all address at a high level. […] The system should be such that we can schedule home and homes. As someone who sits on the CFP Committee, I am asking for your help in fixing a broken model by expanding the playoff and putting an end to unfair scheduling practices." (link)
#7: The new $338M private-public on-campus arena at Texas is a full go. Oak View GroupLive NationC3 Presents & high-profile actor/UT supporter McConaughey are all part of the mix, the latter of "Minister of Culture." University officials believe it's the first deal of it's kind in the nation. 10K seats for hoops, 15K for concerts/other events. Construction begins next summer with completion by the 2020-21 basketball seasons. Video & renderings in all three links. (linklinklink)
#6: The Clemson digital team just can't quit... check out how the Grinch almost stole signing day. (link)
#5: A lot of you are interested in the MBB rankings including NET, RPI, KPI, KenPom, BPI, SOR, Sagarin. Here is the latest rankings updated this morning. (link)
#4: NSDUSA Today's Wolken argues it's pretty easy for the big brands in college FB to stay on top with a scholarships limit at 85. Suggests rolling it back to 70, not allowing more than 20 signees per class, removing redshirts & giving five years of eligibility, redistribute 10 schollies to other sports (thinks Baseball & Soccer need the most help), all in an effort to achieve more parity. In closing, "Maybe college football and the NCAA doesn’t really care that the ability to win championships is being concentrated in the hands of a precious few. But there is a more interesting way to do this, if anyone has the guts to actually pursue it." (link); FootballScoop compiles some of the best Signing Day graphics executed around the nation. (link); Temple went with caricatures. Pretty cool. (link); Ohio State went with a video game that no longer exists, but still has a cult following. #3: Utah offered donors spots on its chartered plane to Lexington for Saturday's MBB tilt at Kentucky, and somehow two Salt Lake City-based UK fans got on the plane. Utes HC Krystkowiak discovered it when he went to introduce himself, thinking they were boosters, asked them not to wear blue on the way back. (link)
#2: Former Missouri AD Alden never really left the scene, but will now be back in the chair, at least in an interim capacity, as the new Senior Advisor to the President at Cleveland State. Alden will lead the Vikings for CSU Prez Sands, "I am committed to helping advance the cause." Sands on Alden, "Mike Alden has a tremendous history of success at multiple institutions and a national reputation for promoting athletic and academic excellence. We are looking forward to having his advice and counsel on campus as we seek a permanent leader for Vikings athletics." Official start date is February 1st. (link)
#1: "Rick Barnes, get the (expletive) out of here." That's Memphis MBB HC Hardaway at the end of a presser Tuesday night after he was asked about comments made by Tennessee boss Barnes in connection to the end-of-game scuffle last weekend & what Barnes saw as Tigers flopping. More: "I don’t know who Rick Barnes thinks I am but I’m not a dude that likes to mess around about anything. I just call it like I see it. No matter how he’s trying to make things seem, and I think it's kind of low class how he’s trying to downgrade my guys for flopping and all that. Man, come on, give me a break." (link); Here's video of a few potential flops Barnes was referring to. (link)
