Kansas: "It's preliminary. It's still early, and certainly the conversations I've had is more of, 'What type of person, what type of strengths — those sorts of things — would be best for our school at this time?' But as far as names, things like that? No, I don't believe there's been near as much discussion on that as what some people would think. But I'm sure that's going to get hot and heavy soon." That's MBB HC Self on the AD search in Lawrence. Further, Self expects to be in the loop & will assist in any way Chancellor Girod requests. (link); KUSports.com's Keegan believes the loose search timeline should give the Jayhawks time to consider strong non-traditional candidates, points to a profile like Colorado's George. Keegan: "I mention George not to suggest he’s a candidate for the Kansas AD job, rather to demonstrate that it pays to look beyond the obvious during a search. If someone outside of college athletics has demonstrated an ability to lead the growth of a business, especially in sports, preferably someone with ties to KU or the state of Kansas, why not include such candidates in the pool? My guess is KU will expand its search beyond the obvious." (link); No mention on how this development might impact athletics, but it looks like every department on campus will trim budgets by 5.97% in an effort to cut $20M in total. (link)
USA Today's Wolken was on ESPN700 in Utah yesterday to discuss the Utes AD search, reiterates he's hearing interviews are going down this week, "Utah's probably in a better position than those two schools (Kansas & Maryland) at the moment given some things that are going on at those other two. I don't necessarily have names of everyone in the mix, but it sounds like a strong group of candidates. You have to understand, moving from one 'Power 5' to another for a sitting AD, it doesn't really happen a whole lot, unless you're talking about a Texas, Michigan or Florida. So, you'll normally pull from a group of leaders from smaller schools & there's nothing wrong with that. There's some very bright leaders in this next generation of leadership in the industry." More, including Wolken noting "nimbleness" needed for AD jobs these days. (link)
Vanderbilt's 2016 990s are in & Baseball HC Corbin cleaned up to the tune of $2.3M. Corbin's haul included $879K base, $1.24M in bonus & incentives, $190K in retirement & deferred comp. FB HC Mason generated $2.8M in total compensation, Commodores AD Williams earned $1.1M on an $846K base & MBB boss Drew tallied $1.2M for his nine months of work in Nashville. VU Chancellor Zeppos also noted as getting $4.3M, buoyed by a $2.9M bonus. In total, 12 university employees received $1M+. More. (link, link)
SEC Meetings: Commish Sankey wrapped up the day, says FERPA could impact a conference-wide injury policy, also notes the SEC Network is now available on all major cable carriers. (link); Alabama FB HC Saban still not in favor of allowing graduate student-athletes to transfer within the league even though he believes the Crimson Tide would benefit. Texas A&M HC Fisher is ok with it, but thinks it would be a "zoo" if nationwide transfers are allowed without sitting out. Georgia boss Smart: "There was a lot of silence in the room last year when (the amendment) was proposed. And now all of a sudden, it's got maybe a little more steam." (linklink); South Carolina WBB HC Staley on her settled suit with Missouri AD Sterk, "Will I speak (to him)? I’m not going to go out of my way to speak to him, but as far as what happened, it’s over in my book. […] We got what we wanted out of the deal. The apology was the main thing." (link); Here's all 20 policy topics league leadership will cover this week. (link)
More on Conference USA's MBB scheduling alterations as Marshall HC D'Antoni also points to changes in the post-season tourney format that should be advantageous for higher seeds, "Since the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds get a double-bye into the semis. the fan bases would know that they're going to be in it. They won't get knocked out early. (link); New Florida Atlantic HC May on the in-season twist, "Right now, I think I like it. It’s creative, it’s different. I think our league is kind of looking for things to kind of separate themselves and be creative. This is one way to do it because we need to get multiple teams in and we were really close last year. […] It’s gonna be interesting and it should bring some attention to the league. It’s outside the box, revolutionary – hopefully in a good way." (link); Former ESPN analyst Adams, who pushed the strategy with the league, "NCAA VP in charge of selection committee told me the committee will notice. He told me when we can provide meaningful games in Feb/March nothing but a plus. This doesn't and can't solve all selection faults and was never intended to, just a thoughtful strategic path forward." (link)
Lehigh's Field Hockey program has been cleared of any "indication of a culture of physical or mental abuse" after the Pictor Group concluded an investigation on the back of "very serious" anonymous allegations last month. In a letter from Leopards AD Sterrett to the program's student-athletes, "There was a general sense Coach Caitlin Dallmayer, who has headed up the program for the last two years, has implemented significant changes to turn around a program with a long history of poor performance and losing records. This transition has resulted in feelings of stress associated with higher levels of intensity, but has netted some early indicators that the team is moving in the right direction." (link - article, link - full letter)

21 Century Fox CEO Murdoch was in Recode's red chair at the opening day of Code Con, "I think when you have a big transaction like this, it’s not entirely straightforward. There’s quite a lot of work to do. We have to see which way things kind of play out, but there’s regulatory work well underway with that with a merger with Disney and the spin of the New Fox. There’s a number of months left to go there." More on the Disney vs. Comcast offers, "...we have an agreement with Disney which we find very attractive for our shareholders. It’s an all-stock agreement. We think the prospects for the new firm are very strong, and we think from a regulatory perspective, and we thought as well in December from a regulatory perspective, then you have a higher certainly of close. When you weigh up of those factors, that’s really what we thought was the right thing to do. Now whether or not the board is asked to consider a different offer from somebody else in the future, we’ll deal with that as we go." More. (link)

New USC Upstate AD Feig was introduced to the Spartan family, "I want to find a way to tap that potential because the sky is the limit. Not all universities can say that the brightest days are ahead. This university has a bright future and this community has a bright future. I think I can help bring those pieces together so we can move ahead and be successful in all facets." Feig also reflected on his time outside of college athletics when he worked in corporate law, "The biggest piece is being able to impact students’ lives. I want to help them through what can be a tumultuous part of their lives but should also be a great and rewarding part of their successful lives. I enjoyed that myself. So that’s what drove me back to it." (link)
Southern Illinois HCs comment on the new role for Special Asst. to the Chancellor Kill & his oversight of the athletic department. MBB's Hinson: "I've had the opportunity to be around coach on several occasions, and since his arrival, I've learned to appreciate him as much as the area has. He's big on communication and big on getting things done." Softball's Blaylock: "I have known coach for a very long time and have the utmost respect and confidence in him as a leader. He has great energy and he makes people want to follow him." FB HC Hill, who played for Kill, says Kill will get the resources necessary to compete. (link)

Back in 1982, approximately 20% of Softball HCs around the DI landscape were men, a figure that stands at ~35% today. The same general trend line holds true for WBB & Volleyball as Florida VB HC Wise notes, "It is disappointing." Oklahoma Softball HC Gasso: "I think for women today, what we know, is that it’s very difficult to have a family and be a mother and be a wife and be a coach at a Division I let alone any level." Former Iowa State Softball HC Crowe adds a different perspective, "Men athletic directors are networking among themselves to find candidates. That just perpetuates the system over and over and over." UMKC AD Wilson: "If you have a candidate who has just as much experience, if it’s male or female, for me if it’s a female coach, then I’m going to go more on the female side if they’re equal." A bit more. (link)

That doesn’t mean they have to be from here, but certainly somebody that understands that dynamic because it’s very different." Lauds outgoing Prez Natalicio. (link)
Watch: Florida AD Stricklin in Part I of a sit-down with TV20 WCJB, reiterates the reasons why he exited Mississippi State for the opportunity in Gainesville, points to the unique combination of high-end resources & a stable leadership history. Stricklin also reviews the list of facility upgrades on the horizon for the Gators, frames it as an investment in infrastructure that's no different than any other business, university or even church. "If you don't make that investment, you're really limiting the impact you can have." More. (link)
Boston College AD Jarmond profiled by ABC11, which serves his hometown of Fayetteville, North Carolina. On the situation of leading HCs who are much older than he, "It's just people. I don't look at the age & the coaches don't. They know I'm going to treat them with respect and know I'm going to go to the wall for them and help them. I'm going to hold them accountable, just like they hold me accountable." Looks like the interview took place at ACC meetings & North Carolina AD Cunningham notes Jarmond's enthusiasm & positivity. (link)
Kentucky AD Barnhart says upgrades to Memorial Coliseum will be a focal point for athletics as part of the upcoming university capital campaign. Looks like the Wildcats have up to $30M to play with once they raise the money. Barnhart notes he'd like to have the work done sooner rather than later, but there's still some unknowns on what might need to be addressed in the aging facility. Some key items: $3M for HVAC improvements, $2.2M for an enclosed club area, $1M each for roof tile replacement & bathroom enhancements, more. (link); Ohio State is still working on plans for a new Ice Arena, though it sounds unlikely the Buckeyes will spend upwards of $100M. Assoc.
