The 2017-18 Learfield Directors' Cup standings are final. Here are all the numbers. Top 10: Stanford, UCLA, Florida, USC, Texas, Michigan, Ohio State, Georgia, Florida State, Texas A&M. (link - ranked, link - by conference); USA Today's Berkowitz runs down some AD bonuses connected to the results. Virginia Tech's Babcock gets a $50K salary increase for a top 30 finish, base is now $750K. $15K for Oregon's Mullens, $30K for Minnesota's Coyle, $50K for Kentucky's Barnhart, $40K for NC State AD Yow, $20K for North Carolina boss Cunningham, $30K for Florida State's Wilcox, $25K at Ohio State for Bucks AD Smith, $100K in Gainesville for Florida AD Stricklin, $30K for UCLA AD Guerrero. (link); Here's how Stanford celebrated its 24th straight title. (link)
Louisville AD Tyra raps with WDRB's Bozich on his first nine months leading the Cardinals. Of note, "I’ve never really thought about comparisons because I feel like I have my own track record that I’m pretty proud of. I didn’t take any of these opportunities or invest in any of these companies to do the same or worse, I think, in the same role to say, 'Jeez, I hope I can do as well or worse than Tom.' I came in here to say, 'What can we build on to make this place better?'" Tyra thinks much tweaking is done within the department, believes it's ready to hum again. Overall, "Pretty comfortable that we're headed in a good direction." (link)
More on new USF AD Kelly, whom TBO.com's Knight calls a "smooth operator" (yes, Sade). Tennessee COO Sigmon, who walked the same halls at the College Football Playoff as Kelly jokes, "I'll let him get into the music with you...And it's evolved over time." CFP boss Hancock: "He's a junkie for what happens in the world. He keeps up with the news — all the news — very closely." Former Bulls AD Griffin says no one has a deeper rolodex than Kelly, so if USF can't crack the 'Power 5' it won't be for a lack of talking to the right people. Sigmon points to two words that encapsulate Kelly, "relationships" & "organization." A bit more, including his former roles in the Tampa market & some oldies, but goodies throwback photos. (link)
New Mexico State Prez Arvizu fields a handful of athletics questions as he takes office in Las Cruces, uses the standard "front porch" analogy, thinks Athletics is a very strategic part of the university. Arvizu indicates he's met with New Mexico Prez Stokes & comments, "From what I have read in the papers, I like our problems more than I like their problems right now." Understands the WAC may not be the best long-term home for the Aggies & though it may be stable at the moment "...we would be foolish to not have a long-term strategy for the best interest of New Mexico State. I would like to think that New Mexico State needs to have an athletics program equal in stature for the expectations that we have for our academics. If we want to be a powerful academic institution with national prominence, our athletic programs should follow suit." More. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
The Big South has a new lineup as Hampton and USC Upstate officially come aboard today, and Liberty exits for the Atlantic Sun. Radford AD Lineburg: "It's certainly a shift, [but] it still remains a very viable and strong mid-level conference. ... Liberty certainly has a financial favorability that many of us in the Big South don’t have. This kind of levels the financial playing field with the other schools in the league." Commish Kallander on what HU does for the league: "The Tidewater area's huge for us. All of our institutions recruit there, so it's great to have a presence." And USC Upstate becomes the fourth school in the Palmetto State, further supporting Kallander's opinion of the conference as a "bus league." (link)

The Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner goes deep on the forming of #DamWorthIt, a mental health campaign created by Oregon State student-athletes Ricci (WGYM) and Braaten (MSOC). The two originally met for coffee last fall to help one another cope with the suicides of Beaver student-athletes and five hours later had three pillars for a campaign: education, resources and awareness/comfort. Ricci: "The way the conversation began, was that we wanted Oregon State to have a full-time sports counselor. But then we started asking: 'What can we do? What’s in our power?' Well, we can help end the stigma. We can help them get through the door. We’re not trying to solve mental health. We’re trying to get people to talk about it, to hammer home that they’re worth it." The Pac-12 threw its full support behind the idea with a $60K grant from its Student-Athlete Health and Well-Being Initiative, which was created in 2013 and to which each school diverts $300K annually. Lots here, including this from Ricci: "When you enter sports, you get labeled physically strong and mentally tough and resilient. But depression hits who it wants to hit, and there’s a tension that arises: 'I’m struggling, but I’m an athlete and I need to be tough.'" (link)
Illinois Exec. Senior Assoc. AD for Sport Administration Kowalczyk will call it a career August 31, at which time he and his wife will relocate to North Carolina. Kowalczyk: "There's no doubt I'm going to miss a lot about this profession. The student-athletes and the coaches and the administrators. I've worked with some wonderful people and top-notch professionals across the spectrum. That part will be a challenge. But I am also excited about not having that schedule. I will be a fan, I will keep a close eye on all the programs. When you're into it, you're so passionate about it and it matters so much. That can be draining as well. It will be enjoyable to not have that sense of you 'have to' win." Kowalczyk specifically notes appreciation for Illini AD Whitman keeping him on staff and "allowing [him] to contribute" after his Interim AD role & the departure of former Illini boss Thomas. (link)
The New Haven Register's Malafronte highlights the 31-year career of newly retired Quinnipiac Prez Lahey, who, when hired in 1987, underscored the importance of Division I athletics as a foundation for a great academic institution. During his tenure enrollment quadrupled, out-of-state applications went up ten-fold, a "beautiful campus" was built as well as "pristine athletic facilities that house nationally successful programs." In the same vain, Malafronte commends former Yale AD Beckett, who retired yesterday after 24-years atop the Bulldogs program, during which time he "restored pride and success to Yale athletics. Every athletic facility has been renovated or reconstructed. Under his leadership the Bulldogs rose to unthinkable heights in the form of multiple Ivy League and national championships. And what an incredibly fitting final year on the job! He’s done Yale and the city of New Haven proud." (link)
N.C. State MBB HC Keatts' summer camp is this year's spot for a tryout of sorts for future ACC MBB Officials. League supervisor Kersey will judge each before the weekend is over, using a highlighter to determine their fate: "You're either pink or you're green. Green is good. Pink is bad." From a group of 171 officials at this camp (51) and one in Atlantic City later this month (120), Kersey will offer approximately a dozen of them slots in the consortium managed by the ACC and Big East. A bit more on the process and Kersey's packed summer. (link)
Cal Baptist is making the move to DI, but MBB HC Croy says nothing will change with the DNA of his program, "Player development and personal development will always be the most important thing in our program. So even though we’re extending our vision, and you have to make that shift, we continue to focus on what we think we do best. [...] It’s all about getting the right guys for our culture, for CBU, and really being convicted in that." Interestingly, it sounds like CBU is in a position to offer guarantees for opponents to visit Riverside for a tip in the 1-year old Events Center. The Lancers have yet to release their 2018-19 slate & there are plans to give season ticket holders the first look. (link)
Since moving to the SEC in 2012, Texas A&M has been inching closer to Texas on the revenue scale. In FY11, which predated the move to the SEC, the Aggies reported $87.3M in revenue while the Longhorns' numbers were $150.3M. Both eclipsed the $200M mark this year as TAMU has closed the gap to less than $3M. A year-by-year comparison is included here, as is the breakdown across ticket sales, contributions and rights/licensing. The switching of conferences, former student-athlete Manziel's Heisman win, the Adidas deal and the SEC Network have all been major contributors in the shift, but none more so than straightup fundraising. The Aggies supporters gave $92M in 2015, more than double that of the $44M given to the Longhorns, and there has been a $33M+ fundraising advantage ever since. Good review by Forbes' Dosh. (link)
Another from Forbes contributor Dosh: "Why Is The NCAA Adding New Bowl Games?" Football Bowl Association Executive Director Waters concedes that "no one is happy with 5-7 teams in bowls," but says coaches and local community organizers are responsible for the push up to 43 bowls. Waters: "Think about all these bowls being on national television. If you're in a community and trying to generate publicity for your community, it's a pretty good way to do it." Bowls fall during typical non-busy seasons for hotels and restaurants and in a 2016 report, the 41 bowl games produced a combined economic impact of $1.5B, ranging from $12.6M to $93.7M per bowl. (link)
Oklahoma State is set to remodel the lobby and display area of its FB coaches offices, which, in the past was an ode to mega booster Pickens, Heisman Trophy winner Sanders, previous Pokes All-Americans and bowl games. "Now it is game on as some displays have already been changed throughout the building and there is always an emphasis on showing off the Cowboys that have graduated on to the National Football League and that is and will continue to be prominently displayed." A few photos included here. (link)
Members of UT Chattanooga's 12-person Fan Council open up about what they believe will get supporters to the games. Cornering the youth market is key, doing more with social media and re-engaging alums are all mentioned as important goals. Upgrading the Wi-Fi is one suggestion, turning down the volume of the music is another, as is giving out better perks for hospitality rooms. Longtime season-ticket holder Buhrman: "Do you want to raise money or have happy boosters?" (link)
BuffZone writer Howell believes the break will be good for the rivalry between Colorado and Colorado State. The schools have met every year on the gridiron since 1995 and will do so through 2020 at which point the Rocky Mountain Showdown will pause. Talk has swirled of a 2023 and 2024 series, but nothing has been signed nor discussed beyond that. "In addition to opening up opportunities on the schedule, taking routine breaks might actually reinvigorate the in-state rivalry and bring added intrigue when they do meet. Ideally, there won't be another 25-year hiatus with the Rocky Mountain Showdown, because the in-state rivalry has, at times, been quite entertaining. With the ever-changing landscape of college football, however, it's no longer a game that needs to be annual affair."
