More leadership shakeup in the Gem State as Idaho State AD Tingey has been relieved of his duties, but will be paid through July of next year ($150K annually). It's the first big personnel move for new ISU Prez Satterlee & was accompanied by a statement from the university, "During the course of an operational review of the Idaho State Athletic Department, President Kevin Satterlee felt that it was in the best interest of the university to place Tingey on administrative leave. The university will announce an interim athletic director soon." No word on if Tingey will stay with the institution past next summer & there are no disciplinary developments pending involving Tingey. (link)
Ohio State: Suspended FB HC Meyer releases a new statement that includes, "I understand my lack of more action in this situation has raised concerns about this commitment. I once again apologize for this, and I extend my empathy to all women, men and families who are affected by relationship violence. This has been a real learning experience for me. I fully intend to use my voice more effectively to be a part of the solution. Let me say here and now what I should have said on Wednesday: I sincerely apologize to Courtney Smith and her children for what they have gone through." (link); The Big Ten's stance on the situation in Columbus, "We support the findings of the investigative team led by Mary Jo White, the recommendations of the Board of Trustees & the decision made by President Drake in consultation with the Board." (link); Given all the circumstances, Stadium's McMurphy does not believe Meyer will still be coaching the Buckeyes during the 2019 season. The Sports Group's Jackson reiterates he was hired by on leave Maryland FB HC Durkin, not former AD Anderson, last year to assist with a sexual misconduct incident involving two student-athletes. Jackson notes how he was already working on a MBB eligibility case when the FB situation arose & provided the Baltimore Sun with an email from Anderson that shows the severing of ties, at Anderson's behest, though he continued to work on the case due to moral obligations. Jackson on current Terps AD Evans saying he didn't know about the relationship until an unpaid invoice for hit his desk, "I find it virtually impossible to believe that Damon Evans was not aware that I was representing these football student-athletes, either that day or immediately following that. It's not like I was walking around the University of Maryland campus under the cloud of darkness with a mask on. I was on that campus several times." More. Alabama AD Byrne gets a three-year extension & raise. Length: Through June of 2025. Pay: $980K this year, up to $1.13M in the last year. Also $300K annually in deferred compensation. WBB HC Curry's deal is now good through April of 2022, increase in pay to $465K. (link); Crimson Tide FB HC Saban also on the up & up, base comp to $7.5M this season, an $800K "contract extension/championship signing incentive," plus bonus opportunities topped by another $800K for winning a national championship. Also of note, "The contract, like many new deals in college sports, also includes language that specifically requires Saban to report knowledge of suspicion of sexual misconduct to the university’s Title IX oversight officials." (link)
Iowa boss Barta turns down a $50K raise "in an effort to shore up the athletic department's bottom line." Prez Harreld: "(the move) is not a reflection of (Barta's) performance or our support for his leadership. Athletic departments across the Big Ten are facing new challenges and headwinds, and I’m proud to have an athletic director so committed to the success of our student-athletes and his team." "It got to be a much more business-oriented thing rather than sports-oriented. It got to be who can negotiate the television dollars, who can negotiate the corporate sponsorships. You can actually go to school and not even play a sport and become an athletic director as an administrator. I’m not sure how great that is. It helps you if you’ve been on a sideline or you’ve been in a huddle or been in a fourth-and-1 and had to make a decision. It makes a difference, in my opinion, although there are great athletic directors both ways." That's Tennessee AD Fulmer on how the business has changed during his time in Knoxville, also says he expected to make some leadership changes to his staff, "but what I found really quickly is how loyal they are to Tennessee, how professional they are and how we moved forward quickly. They put all those things that were going on behind them, and we all went to work." Fulmer points to Baseball as the only Vols program with facilities that aren't on par with the rest of the SEC. (link)

States with a B1G institution will see BTN on their "expanded basic" tier, while others can get the network via the "sports and entertainment" tier. A high-profile FB student-athlete behavioral issue, along with peer institutions around the Big Ten being in the spotlight has Wisconsin regents asking about controls on & oversight of athletics. Regent Atwell during yesterday's board meeting, "It is one of the areas where, historically, powerful people have been able to hide." Chancellor Blank, in response to questioning, "Can I promise that never will anything happen? Of course I can’t, but I do think we have strong controls in place." Sounds like a comprehensive audit of the Badgers' department will be completed next month. (link)
The second part of former Maryland AD Anderson's 1.Question with host @TaiMBrown dives into avoiding assumptions, maintaining focus on student-athlete well-being & the many distractions of the business. Anderson: "I believe great leaders know how to influence and transform lives but you have to develop trust. With trust people will know that you have their best interest at heart. […] Good leaders have the ability to be vulnerable. Being vulnerable is the ability to share what you are truly feeling and showing the ability to admit if you've made a mistake and be willing to accept it and receive advice on how to fix it. […] It's unfortunate that we don't hear about all the great work that most of the people in the college athletics industry do to support Student-Athletes. Latest 'Candid Coaches' question from CBS: Will the NCAA's new rules and calendar make recruiting better or worse in college hoops? For coaches, 66% said worse, 31% same & 3% better. For recruits, 68% said worse, 30% the same & 2% better. Some comments: "It could be really, really bad. I think this hurts the prospects, gives guys in small towns or rural areas less exposure. Those guys won't be seen as much. I'm worried about the Murray States, the OVC and Southland schools. I was at that level and know how hard it is to find those guys. So if I don't know how to see guys, how can I make the time to see the guys I have to see? How will I budget to do this if I don't have the resources to do so? […] For coaches, it will create new challenges, not necessarily more difficult ones. Coaches will always figure out ways to adapt. .... Not part of the question, but this will greatly benefit people who run scouting services, or other third parties, as their value automatically increases with limited access by coaches. […] The one thing I do like is that it's a positive with their high school, that you get a better idea of what kind of teammate is he, how much character is there. His high school coach can keep him more accountable. With AAU, they don't practice as much, the coach might not hold him accountable. In high school, with a team concept, I think that will help us." For HBR, former NYU & Hofstra professor Kislik outlines the most effective ways leaders can prepare their teams for organizational change. 1) Plan more time than you ever thought necessary to prepare the content, the delivery, and the necessary follow-up. (“Typically, you should expect to hold not just one initial “all hands” meeting or videoconference, but also a series of smaller team and individual conversations as follow-ups.”); 2) Equip all levels of management to explain the context. (“Otherwise, to escape their own discomfort, they may dump the news or blame management, either directly or indirectly.”); 3) Describe the organizational pain, and how the new solution alleviates it. (“Instead of just announcing a disruptive change, give the background of what’s not working today and why the new plan is the best way to get to the desired outcome.”); 4) Personalize both the impact and the resolution; 5) Give the affected people as many options and as much participation as you can. Cal AD Knowlton continues to be on the wire, this time with a letter to supporters as Golden Bears student-athletes return to campus. In part, "As we turn our focus to the start of our own fall seasons, it is important to explain our #EarnIt campaign, which will be our marketing and social media slogan for the upcoming year. As you can read on the website, we believe that the ethos of #EarnIt is something that has guided Cal over the past 150 years. Nothing is assumed and everything is questioned. Florida FB seasons tickets are down by 9K-ish year over year & there's still 4K student tickets remaining with just a week before opening kick. This year's home schedule could be part of the issue as there's no Tennessee or Florida State. As of August 9th the Gators had moved 58K season ticket against 2018's total of 67K. (link)
The Baylor saga rolls on & amid more filings yesterday comes news that the university spent $4.2M with Pepper Hamilton for its work. BU has also asked a federal judge to limit the scope of discovery needed in the case involving 10 Jane Does in an effort to expedite the process & limit further outlay of millions of dollars & hours upon hours of time. Facilities: The Virginia Tech Board of Visitors is meeting this weekend and among other things will vote on whether to move forward with the Student-Athlete Performance Center and Merryman Center projects. So far $5M in verbal pledges have come in for the Merryman Center to be renovated and expanded. Pending approval, $700K will be allocated to complete the "working drawings" of the project, which includes expanding the second floor by nearly 5K square feet. Hanbury is the architect handling the $16.6M initial design of a new S-A Performance Center, for which the Hokies received a $15.2M donation last year. Goal is to have it up and running by fall of 2020. (link); Georgia's Sanford Stadium west end zone project is "nearing completion" with rails on the bridge still needed, as well as some other minor items. Ribbon-cutting ceremony is Friday.
