UMary unveiled rendering for its nearly $90M athletic complex that would allow football, baseball soccer and track & field to compete on campus. The football field would seat 2,500 and come with the ability to inflate a dome during adverse weather months. EVP Richter hopes to begin moving dirt next summer on the project that would take an estimated three years to complete: "To be able to pull the trigger, we need to have money identified. A lot of things have come together at the same time. The timing has converged and we don’t want to wait around. People believe in what we’re doing. People believe in Christian education." (link)

The New York Times’ Streeter reports the stream of revenue flowing to female student-athletes via NIL “troubles some who have fought for equitable treatment in women’s sports and say that it rewards traditional feminine desirability over athletic excellence. And while the female athletes I spoke to said they were consciously deciding whether to play up or down their sexuality, some observers say that the market is dictating that choice.” Stanford (DI) WBB HC VanDerveer, for instance, sees the focus on beauty as regressive for women athletes. “I guess sometimes we have this swinging pendulum, where we maybe take two steps forward, and then we take a step back. We’re fighting for all the opportunities to compete, to play, to have resources, to have facilities, to have coaches, and all the things that go with Olympic-caliber athletics. … This is a step back.” Stanford WBB student-athlete Jones, meanwhile, observes: “You can go outside wearing sweatpants and a puffer jacket, and you’ll be sexualized. I could be on a podcast, and it could just be my voice, and I’ll face the same thing. So, I think it will be there, no matter what you do or how you present yourself. This is the society we live in.” More. (link)

More Higher Ed:
+ West Liberty will work with AGB Search to find its next president. (link)
+ After recording a median return of 30.1% during FY21, higher ed endowments are showing a decline of 7.8% during FY22, according to Cambridge Associates, as reported by Inside Higher Ed. While Harvard (DI) (-1.8%) and Yale (DI) (+0.8%) ended the year relatively unscathed, IHE’s Moody notes: “Among the country’s other richest institutions, Stanford University’s (DI) endowment fell by 4.2%; Princeton University (DI) saw a decline of 1.5%; the [MIT (DIII)] experienced a loss of 5.3%; and the University of Texas/Texas A&M Investment Management Company (DI) saw a decline of 6.2%. Returns for the University of Pennsylvania (DI) were flat, and the University of Michigan (DI) saw returns grow by 2.2% for FY 2022. Commonfund Asset Management President/CEO Yates cautions against placing too much emphasis on one year or another: “The typical endowment has meaningful equity risk, broadly defined, across the portfolio. It makes sense that when the equity markets go up, endowments go up, and when equity markets decline, there’s going to be a commensurate impact on endowment performance. … The typical college or endowment has a three-year average spending policy, which means they take the average of 12 quarters or three years or some calculation to try to smooth out spending. Any one year in and of itself doesn’t have a huge impact because of the smoothing mechanism.” (link)
