D1.jobs: New opportunities below at SMU, Texas, James Madison & FIU. Post your openings here.
All signs point to Sun Belt Commish Benson informing the media during a 1p teleconference today that he'll step away from the league after the upcoming academic year. Technically, Benson's contract runs through June of next year. Benson's six-plus year tenure has been marked by realignment, post-season FB bowl relationships & the new eight-year TV deal that will see every conference FB matchup carried on the ESPN family of networks, as well as reportedly doubling the per school payout. The Citadel's AD search is over as Interim AD, VP for Athletic Development at The Citadel Foundation & former UNC Wilmington AD Capaccio is the selection to lead the Bulldogs. Interim Prez Sams: "Mike Capaccio knows our program inside and out. His passion, energy and commitment to The Citadel make him ideal to fill this key leadership position. Mike has already served The Citadel well, is a former AD, knows our coaches, players and staff and believes in our mission to develop principled leaders. We are grateful he has agreed to let us remove the title ‘interim’ to take on the AD role full-time." Parker Executive Search with the assist. (link)
Maryland: The university's Board of Trustees will hold a closed session meeting today. On the agenda, "The appointment, employment, assignment, promotion,  discipline, demotion, compensation, removal, resignation, or performance  evaluation  of  appointees, employees, or officials over whom it has jurisdiction; or Any other personnel matter that affects one or more specific individuals." Here's the agenda. (link); Terps FB practices now feature hydration & cooling tents as yesterday's session was open to the media. Cold tubs were also located near the practice fields, as well as by the locker room. Student-athletes who spoke with reporters believe the picture painted of the program's culture is inaccurate. Interim HC Canada: "Our kids are excited to practice, excited to play; they are loving each other. At times, are we grieving for Jordan? We are. But our culture right now is really, really good, and our staff is working to continue to make it better." (link)
News coming today at Alabama as Crimson Tide leaders will roll-out a major facilities plan, the 'Crimson Standard,' that includes renovations to Bryant-Denny Stadium. Basketball's Coleman Coliseum, Softball's Rhoads Stadium & other venues. At Bryant-Denny, a slight decrease in overall capacity will be seen, as will new luxury boxes & a new video board in the south end zone. Bama AD Byrne & Prez Bell will detail the capital campaign to fund the push. (link)
Speaking of facilities, the Minnesota Vikings' new practice digs features multiple rooms dedicated to tech advances that The Ringer's Clark says haven't been done in a FB space before. Some interesting nuggets from Clark's time with GM Spielman, "There’s the big stuff—a virtual reality room, an improved weight room, an underwater treadmill that can be moved up or down depending on how much body weight you want underwater—and then the smaller stuff, which includes hills at different inclines depending on what position group you play in and what you want to accomplish from running up a hill. […] The Vikings have been charting the player projections of their evaluators at each position group, trying to figure out which combination of scouts and coaches they should listen to most closely when evaluating, say, a defensive back." Interestingly, with tech advances making busy work more efficient, the question some are asking within the Vikings organization is, "What do we do with this extra time that's been freed up?" Good read given the arms race in college athletics. (link)
LEAD1 Executive Director McMillen angles on the coming MBB changes in his latest 'Byte of the Week.' McMillen's takeaways: Don't expect the actions to be the panacea of all solutions, notes the NCAA "was never going to take any steps" that would jeopardize next month's Jenkins case, believes the NBA/NBPA need to step up to help on the one-and-done front (says it's "disappointing" they didn't work in more unison), "most of our ADs would like to see young athletes go straight to the pros or choose college & make a bonafide effort to be a student."  Overall, McMillen believes the reforms are "groundbreaking" & will make the game stronger. (link)
The Athletic's Ubben writes on pros & cons of Tennessee FB HC Pruitt's edict that he & only he represent the program to the media during preseason camp. Pruitt's perspective, "Most everywhere that I’ve worked, it’s been that way. And I appreciated it as an assistant coach, so I could work on the opponents and not come out here and hang out with you guys." While Ubben notes Pruitt can do anything he wants right now, he also sources some ACs from "stable programs" who note the difficulty of building their own brand & obtaining an HC job without having to move to another program first. More. (link); Another note from preseason camp is Arizona State's lack of cursing on the practice field. ASU AC & former NFL standout Pierce, "I hate to say it, but you have to worry about kids being a little sensitive. At the end of the day, if you earn the respect of an athlete, you can yell and get after him. There’s a certain level of respect you have to have for each other, a certain level of tolerance you have to have for each other. I come from an era where you get after kids, but you never embarrass them." (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
As the crow flies, it's 568 miles from one Death Valley to another & that's the trek Clemson & LSU will embark upon in 2025 & 2026 as the pair officially announce future FB matchups. '25 in Clemson, '26 in Baton Rouge. (link); LSU AD Alleva on the addition, "Over the past few years, we've had a history of playing neutral site games, and those games have been very beneficial to us in a lot of ways. But we thought going forward that we needed to bring some quality opponents into Tiger Stadium other than our SEC opponents. And that's what we're doing." Alleva also points to on-going discussions with Florida State brass about a series & his belief the SEC will not move to a nine-game league slate. (link); One more worldly note for the orange-clad Tigers as it looks like MBB HC Brownell's squad will represent the United States in the World University Games next year. (link)

James Madison AD Bourne pens on "Raising the Bar" for the Dukes, runs through on-field success - a cumulative 65% winning percentage over the last three years that he says is the top mark in the state & CAA - as well as a commitment to cost of attendance, facilities, fundraising, ticket sales & TV. Of note, COA will begin for all student-athletes next Fall, the new indoor sports performance building is nearly done & there's a bevy of other facility upgrades in progress. The Duke Club did $2.63M in annual fund money in FY18 & $4.45M overall. All premium FB ticket options are sold out & last year's FB sales total has been surpassed. (link)
Legends & JMI Sports recruit Milwaukee Bucks EVP of Strategy & Development Loehrke as the new President of its joint venue with Notre Dame. Fighting Irish boss Swarbrick: "Because we are committed to maintaining the distinctiveness that makes Notre Dame a great brand, it was imperative that we find a leader for this collaboration who understands and can give voice to that distinctiveness. That describes Ted Loehrke. As a Notre Dame graduate and highly accomplished sports industry executive, Ted has the understanding, passion and experience that will help to ensure our success." Loehrke also previously served as SVP in the NBA's TMBO unit. (link)
The Monroe News Star's Hunsucker thinks Louisiana Monroe missed the mark with its preseason banquet dubbed 'The Pursuit.' Notable media personality & ULM alum Brando led the program, but Hunsucker says overall it was a "wasted opportunity" as there were few details provided about facility projects, no words at all from Warhawks AD Floyd & no ask made of the supporters in attendance. Hunsucker uses the word "anonymous" to describe Floyd's tenure thus far. His overall thesis, "The narrative surrounding the ULM athletic department is that of a bare-bones operation as cash-strapped as it is inattentive. Some of this is true. Some is the collective perception of a constituency that has been conditioned to expect the worst for almost 25 years now. The sum of both parts equals a problem." (link)
LSU Senior Assoc. AD/CFO Ewing says the Tigers will monitor others who are moving to a more fan friendly concessions pricing model. Ewing: "...we don’t have that on the table at this point. It’s a revenue loss, so you’ve got to make up for that loss somewhere else." That "somewhere else" has been volume for the likes of the Atlanta Falcons, but it's no small change for the Bayou Bengals as $2.4M in net was generated last season. (link); The Detroit Lions will use reduced prices to try to get fans in the door earlier with its new 'Silver Savings' push. "The average savings for food and beverage specials during Power Hour is more than 60%." (link)
Cal's efforts to put more butts in seats for FB games includes FB student-athletes executing some grassroots marketing around campus handing out schedule cards & water to their peers. It's certainly not a revolutionary idea, but Golden Bears HC Wilcox notes its importance, "We talked a lot about painting the football team in a better image. I think there can be disconnect between some of the students and those on the football team, so little things like this can be a huge help." (link)
More Personnel: Brown AD Hayes will chair the NCAA Division I Men's LAX Committee for the upcoming season, succeeding Richmond AD Hardt in the role. (link); Marquette AD Scholl doles out several promotions: Executive Assoc. AD titles now belong to SWA Bobert, compliance boss Josetti and academic leader Ridgeway. Additionally, facilities/ops director Baker and PR/Communications lead Kuykendall each bumped up to Senior Assoc. AD. (link); Colorado State FB HC Bobo updates on status, receiving multiple-day treatment for a peripheral neuropathy and on-going medical testing. Remains hospitalized but is active in pre-season prep from his hospital bed. (link); The Texas A&M Board of Regents will vote today on if they want to proceed with litigation against former TAMU special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Banks for breach of contract. Banks was under contract through March 2019 at $375K/year but left in December 2017 to assume the same position at Alabama. His buyout, per his TAMU contract, was the remaining salary on his contract if he took a job elsewhere in the league, not to exceed $457K due. (link); Saginaw Valley State (DII) AD Decker goes with former Central Michigan Baseball HC Jaksa for the same role with the Cardinals. (link); Utah Director of Skiing Landstedt hires former Ute NCAA champion Havlick as head Nordic coach and former U.S. Ski Team coach Johnson as head alpine coach. (link); ESPN's Ley will take a six-month sabbatical starting Oct. 1. Outside the Lines will be hosted by Kate Fagan, Jeremy Schaap and Ryan Smith. (link); Bleacher Report Prez Brown will step aside. His position will not be filled, instead B/R will hire a Chief Creative/Content Officer. (link)
Most new ADs take some time, then design their bold vision for the future. To achieve maximum impact, Drexel professor & leadership expert van Knippenberg, along with two European peers, point to research that shows "effective change leadership has to emphasize continuity — how what is central to 'who we are' as an organization will be preserved, despite the uncertainty and changes on the horizon." Thesis: "In overcoming resistance to change and building support for change, leaders need to communicate an appealing vision of change in combination with a vision of continuity. Unless they are able to ensure people that what defines the organization’s identity — 'what makes us who we are' — will be preserved despite the changes, leaders may have to brace themselves for a wave of resistance." (link)

"We have to be willing to test the boundaries. We have to be willing to press against the side of the wall and move something from time to time. We have to be willing to explore. We have to be willing to take calculated risks. […] You will get left behind. You will become obsolete. We are no different. Part of our operation, the part that you all see, is the business part. It’s the making money, it’s the selling tickets, it’s the brand. It’s the fan experience and the game day experience. We have to be able to do those things well." That's Auburn AD Greene to the Auburn Chamber of Commerce. Greene also says paying student-athletes would "erode our amateurism," points to the millions of dollars poured into facilities to create an optimal student-athlete experience. (link)
Facilities, continued: Check out these photos & video of Troy's new FB locker room. (link, link); A few photos of the work being done to The Coliseum, and this quote from USC AD Swann: "It will be a season of change for a lot of fans when they come into the Coliseum. Everybody will be going through some kind of adjustment, in terms of where they used to sit and to where they’re going to sit this year and how it’s going to change in 2019. Growing pains, if you will." (link); Marshall issued an "expression of interest" from architectural firms to provide a full service design for a new baseball facility and Gullickson Hall renovation. Responses due Sept. 6. Mayor Williams calls the baseball stadium a priority of his and will use some of the $3M prize money from Huntington winning the America's Best Community competition toward its construction. (link); The Big South unveils its new Big South Network Studio as part of the recent eight-month renovation and expansion of the league's HQ. Three key areas: main interview set, smaller one-on-one interview set, and a green-screen set. Atlanta-based dB Integrations and Artes, LLC assisted with the project. (link)
Add Boise State to the list of schools adding more pre-game FB hospitality options for fans. The Ford Tailgate Zone will be hosted on DeChevrieux Field & include food trucks, plus plenty of big screen TVs with other games on from around the nation. Asst. AD for Marketing & Promotions Thomas: "We're just really expanding what opportunities people have to enjoy the game day experience prior to heading inside Albertsans Stadium." More on BSU's pregame plans. (link)
West Virginia is still considering severing its relationship with Papa John's. Senior Assoc. AD for External Affairs Wells: "We’re having conversations internally, externally and then we will come to a decision hopefully here in the very near future about what the involvement looks like for this season and moving forward. Our relationship has been with the local franchisee, not necessarily corporate, so that’s why we’re taking our time and having some very thorough discussions before we make any final decisions on what the relationship looks like this season. The moment the news broke about the controversy, we started monitoring the situation." (link); Papa John's will cut food costs, royalties and online fees, and provide marketing funds to franchisees in the wake of the company's Schnatter saga. Expected to spend $30M-$50M to re-brand and aid North American franchisees. Prez/CEO Ritchie: "This program is one of many actions we are taking to prioritize our team, address the recent challenges and move Papa John’s forward. I appreciate the open conversation that we have had with our franchisees and the support they have extended, both on this agreement and on the broader operating initiatives we are pursuing to improve performance and build a better future for our company and our stakeholders." (link)
Also Noticed: Our condolences to the Penn State family as incoming Track & Field student-athlete Marche was shot and passed away Monday night in his driveway. (link); McNeese State partners with Under Armour and BSN Sports. (link); Furman QB Roberts graduated in three years with a degree in pre-engineering and is on track to earn a second bachelor's in mechanical engineering... but from Clemson, as Furman didn't offer the program. He is taking advantage of the "cooperative educational exchange program that allows students to play at one school while pursuing their desired degree at another." The Tigers and Paladins kick off the season against one another September 1. (link); Current Dallas Cowboys WR and former Baylor student-athlete Cannon on the scandals at BU: "No one heard anything about this until it came out (in the media). Nothing. It was just like all new all at once. Nobody knew what was going on, or had heard this. We didn’t know, and the coaches didn’t know about it. At the end of the day, I think a lot of this stuff was not actually how it was. Just being a player, and actually living it, I think a lot of it was made up." (link); Five FB unis unveiled at Oregon... is that a gold helmet?! (link); UTEP reveals its unis for the year, too, including an all orange option. (link); Troy will play FB at Clemson in 2025. (link); Kentucky has bought out its road trip to Eastern Michigan in 2019, the game will now take place at Kroger Field, as will the 2020 edition. $800K for the 2019 game heading to the Eagles coffers. (link); West Virginia set to host Duquesne in 2023. $425K for the Dukes. (link); The WNBA's Seattle Storm will play in Washington's Alaska Airlines Arena in 2019.
